I got to meet G W Bailey twice. My friend attended the same church and was good friends with his son Martin. The first time I met him we had stopped by his to pick up Martin, on our way to see Iron Maiden. When we walked into the house GW was sitting on a Lazy-Boy Recliner and before Martin could introduce us he turned to us and said, (LOUDLY in his gravely voice) " NO!!!!! Michael Winslow IS the same sound effect guy from Spaceballs. My favorite scene in this movie is when Mahoney is teaching Hightower how to drive. Hightower ripps the front seat of the slugbug out and sits in the back seat to drive. Hightower hits a dude and the dude gets out, all pissed off, goes to the window and realizes the driver is in the back seat and HUGE. He quietly goes back to his own car. Love that scene.
Hightower was played by Bubba Smith an NFL veteran. The irate guy who Hightower rear ended while learning to drive was the director of the movie, Hugh Wilson.

Another of my favorite movies. I was 13 when this came out. Steve Guttenberg was great as Mahoney. And Michael Winslow(yes, he was in Spaceballs) as Jones was great. I just recently found out that Steve Guttenberg's father was a police officer. That is pretty cool.
I'm so old... I remember the actor playing Lassard, the old man in charge who was lousy w/ numbers, was also on a show called Punky Brewster back in the early/mid 80s w/ an actress Soleil Moon Frye
During the 80s it was like there was no other movie on the network channels. Up in south-east Queensland there is the MovieWorld theme park that pays tribute to Police Academy, ever since it opened.
14:44 This reminds me of skit on "The Carol Burnett Show" when a bank teller, a bank robber, and a cop all have to supervise newbies on their first day, and they all run into each other when the robbers try to stick up a bank. The rookie bank robber (played by Tim Conway) pulls out his revolver and yells "This is a screw up, so don't anybody stick around!"
Hightower, who was played to perfection by Bubba Smith was a recently retired NFL football player. He was notouriuos for being the biggest, baddest, meanest, defensive lineman in the league when he played. Just like Alex Karris before him who played Mongo in Blazing Saddles Being a Honda Civic driver at the time which was basically a tin can on wheels, I loved it when he tore out the front seat so he could fit into the car.
I’m not nearly as big as Bubba was, but I’m still fairly large. A friend had a 79 Civic hatchback with a 4 speed manual transmission. He asked me to move it around the block for him once. I literally had to drive with the driver’s door open so I could operate the clutch because y thigh was too big to fit between the steering wheel and the door.
The idea for this movie came when the producer, Paul Maslansky, worked on THE RIGHT STUFF and needed many cops for a scene. The state provided them with cadets from the Police Academy. When they arrived on their busses, Maslansky noticed that they "didn't look like cops". They were big, small, old, very young, fat, and too thin. The present Police Captain smiled and told him: "We have to accept them as applicants, but nothing says that we must pass them".

Good looking out for watching this movie because it is still one of my most favorite ones from the 80s. When this movie was released on March 23, 1984, in the US, I was 6 going on 7 years old in the second grade. I probably shouldn't have watched this and lot of stuff back then at that age, but I did. Gotta have a little bit for everyone. The humor is mostly so childish that kids love it. Always a love connection or three. Some adult humor and nudity that can be edited out for television releases. Some really great music in a lot of the films too. A few sports jokes and cultural references and you have a hit. Storyline wasn't always a priority in the '80s.

Commandant Lassard at the podium getting mystery head was the funniest scene for e. The facial reactions were great. I love at the end , Jen says, the music was her favorite part. That does not say much for the movie itself. haha
When they went to film the riot sequence at the end the needed a "bad part of town" but the worst one they could find in Toronto wasn't bad enough so they had to set dress it to make it look rougher
Thanks, Jen, for hitting another one that I first enjoyed in the theater. Bruce Mahler(Douglas Fack) was previously in "Fridays," a short-lived comedy sketch program that was funnier than SNL at the time. Michael Richards is one of the better known alumni of "Fridays "

I love your enthusiasm for every single movie. You're one of my favorites..!!
That theme song is one of my favorite movie themes of all time. I did like part 2 and 3 if that helps. Cool reaction!
Toronto, Canada. Gotta love the cops. LMAO.
Yes Jen. He is Mr "I lost the beeps, I lost the sweeps and I lost the creeps".
"That's not the only thing he lost."
one thing that I thought was funny about this movie at 13:30 Tackleberry doesn't get down after Leslie's accidental discharge because he's a gun person and knows the next round is not chamber yet.
Fantastic reaction! There are 7 of them, i love the first 6, in particular 1, 4, and 6. I first saw this when i was 6, i grew up with these in the 80s. I hope you decide to watch more.
07:13 yes, that's Michael Winslow
The most iconic thing from this film is the Blue Oyster, which is a running joke throughout the series. Great reaction. Have a nice day.
@ 7:48 Yes!😁 That Is Michael Winslow. This Is Probably The Movie That Made Him Famous , Because "Spaceballs" Came Out 3 Years Later In 1987!😁🤓🙂☺️
I Remember 🤔 My Classmate At Collierville High School 🏫 🎒 In 1986 , Used To Go "No!!!!!!!!!!!!" Like The Guy In This Movie!😳😁😅😂🤣
So I Rented This Movie From 'Blockbuster Video'🏪📼' 🚶🏻🚲In 1986.
Oh My Goodness I Loved Growing Up In The 1980's.
I Am Typing This At 6:58 p.m. , May 8 , 2024.
These movies were a staple of my teen years. There's a character named "Proctor" who shows up in the next few. He's very funny.
Yes, Micheal Winslow, the sound effect guy from Spaceballs, this is where most of us first met him.
"It's not an 80's movie w/o 🍰🍰 I expect to see 🍰🍰"🤣🤣🤣🤣
Gotta have a little bit for everyone. The humor is mostly so childish that kids love it. Always a love connection or three. Some adult humor and nudity that can be edited out for television releases. Some really great music in a lot of the films too. A few sports jokes and cultural references and you have a hit. Storyline wasn't always a priority in the '80s.
The Blue Oyster Bar is my favorite running gag in this series. Funniest in the first film, but welcome in the sequels too.
Glad you enjoyed PA Jen. I sure would watch you react to the sequels, especially 2 and 3. Have a great evening
9:01
"How Many Weeks Is It? They've Said 14, 12 And 24"
Basically, the Commandant's mixing up the number of weeks of training for the cadets is supposed to represent that he's not all there in the head
The music in the blue oyster bar scene is absolutely iconic
Two things about the kid in the M*A*S*H shirt:
1. I had that same shirt when I was a kid
2. The actor who played Captain Harris was a series regular on M*A*S*H
It was good to see Bubba Smith, the big guy. He was a very good NFL defensive end for the Colts, Oilers, and Raiders.
This movie was filmed up in Canada and was low budget. It actually did very well. G W Bailey who was Harris said best movie he was ever a part of. Loved working with Steve Guttenberg. The two linked up again in the 1986 comedy Short Circuit. You will like that movie
This was the first movie that I ever watched on VHS. I remember my parents coming home with a VHS recorder and this movie.
Man, was the 8 year old me having fun.
That was almost 40 years ago...
I seen this a million times but it was the first time I noticed Tac didn’t move when Barbara turned around with the shotgun. Tac obviously knew he hadn’t racked another round in the chamber.
I fell in love with Leslie Easterbrook when I first saw this movie as a kid,and I still feel the same way at 50.
They made seven of these movies, there was also a live action TV series, and an animated series.
Hi Jen, great reaction to this comedy classic! The Police Academy movies are hilarious, please continue the franchise with 2, 3 & 4 :) So funny and they're underrated imo. You're looking gorgeous as always :)
These movies are mostly pretty good, but I still like them all, It's a character driven series. Some casting changes, but they mostly stay intact w/ notable additions. Great movie series.
I remember watching the first two with my family over and over back in the day. I haven't watched them since! I should get back to them. I love the theme!
I used to be friends with someone in this movie. Donovan Scott who played Leslie Barbara.
ah man, this is really calling back to my childhood. part 2 is probably my favorite because of 2 new characters, must watch
Jen: Where did he send them?
The scene in the bar.
Jen: I see.))
Jen: What will he do?
The scene with Lassard.
Jan: I see.))
Me: Jen's face is priceless when she says "I see".))
P.S. Miss Murray, watch the movie Leon: The Professional (1994). Have fun. And a little awkwardness.
15:51 Don't you love how the other cadets keep bringin' their problems to Mahoney.
3:14
"Aren't There A Bunch Of These Movies, Like 5 Or Something?"
That's correct, Jen. There's actually 7 "Police Academy" Movies in total
Commandant Lassard at the podium getting mystery head was the funniest scene for e. The facial reactions were great. I love at the end , Jen says, the music was her favorite part. That does not say much for the movie itself. haha
I remember certain scenes being filmed in Brampton On. Queen and McLaughlin. Which was a woman's prison at the time. (Not sure about now)
😄👍 I knew you'd like the visual "Diamonds Are Forever" reference at 1:25.
Yes Jen watch part 2
7:03 Yep that's Michael Winslow. The same guy from "Spaceballs"
I watched this one and 2 a billion times on cable back in the day LOL
When they went to film the riot sequence at the end the needed a "bad part of town" but the worst one they could find in Toronto wasn't bad enough so they had to set dress it to make it look rougher
Thanks, Jen, for hitting another one that I first enjoyed in the theater. Bruce Mahler(Douglas Fack) was previously in "Fridays," a short-lived comedy sketch program that was funnier than SNL at the time. Michael Richards is one of the better known alumni of "Fridays "
I love pretty much anything G.W. Bailey is in. And he's been in a metric ton of movies and TV shows! He is one of the highlights of this movie.
"Ypour traiming time wil lbe 14 weeks"
Jen: "That's a LOT!"
*looks at 2.5 - 3 year trainign over here* ...
We have 2 year training in Canada too. Tbh I thought they were doing tryouts to get into police academy
Michael Winslow was also on America's Got Talent.
I was eleven or twelve when I saw this (as a New Release on VHS) and it was an instant favourite. I'm anticipating much merriment behind Jen's Serious Girl Spectacles on this one.
thats Michael WInslow I believe doing the sound effects, he was clever and was in a lot of htings back in the day.
The car that Mahoney "parked" is a 1980 Pontiac Trans Am. I had a '79 also in white. I shouldn't have sold it.
Just a shame so many have passed, Bubba Smith, David Graf, George Gains, Marion Ramsey to name a few.😊
Graf was a Star Trekker, too! They should get special treatment instead of dying.
3:00 - 3:04 The guy who hits his wife with his briefcase is Bruce Mahler. You may also know him as the rabbi on Seinfeld who couldn't keep Elaine's secrets.
13:32 when he spins around with the riffle, everyone but Tackleberry ducks because he knows it has not been cocked again, thus it can not fire.
Not a rifle smooth brain, that's a shotgun
@@johncitizen306 not my fault everything I know about guns comes from this movie. :P
This is fun. It's been a long time since I watched this movie. I love it when Jen laughs. It doubles the fun. I recommend HotShots with Charlie Sheen. It's a Top Gun parody.
"That looks like Harris! Should we shoot back?" *thinks about it* Nah....
I'd love to see you react to more!
0:32 Yeah, that's pretty much the state of the U.S. Police Force currently (too many of them, at least).
1:06 Frankie Says Relax
2:06 Michael Winslow was also widely known in Stand-Up circles back in the day, largely because of these skills.
3:12 There were eight when I lost count, but they're unwatchable after the third.
6:16 I'm crap with guessing ages, but I'm assuming Jen is decades younger than me. That being said, she really understands the assignment when it come to 80's movies.🍈🍈
7:00 Yup, that's the same guy, and yup, that was Spaceballs. You gotta love a Nerd Girl, they work stuff out beautifully quickly.😻
9:59 Standard Police Issue would have been a .38. 10:05 That might be a .44 (with experimental exploding rounds).
13:09 Jen knows The Classics, and that's what I appreciates about her.
20:58 I've said it before and I'll say it again...Fruit is Evil.
Kim Catterall and G.W.Bailey (Captain Harris) were in another 80s comedy together, which was the comedy film Mannequin (1987) which is well worth a watch.
Mannequin 2: not so much.
@@johncampbell756 Yup, Mannequin 2 was terrible 😂
Dude, this is my fave channel. I appreciate you.
Thanks! :)
High Tower is actually Bubba Smith of the Chicago Bears
One of the writers was Pat Proft, who indeed also worked on Police Squad and The Naked Gun.
