Police Academy Movie Description:
When the mayor of a crime-ridden city loosens the restrictions on entering the police academy in order to get more cops on the street, all manner of oddball characters enlist to join the force. Among the cadets are suave Carey Mahoney (Steve Guttenberg), hulking Moses Hightower (Bubba Smith), beautiful Karen Thompson (Kim Cattrall) and sound effects-generating Larvell Jones (Michael Winslow), who all have to show initiative and courage when they are faced with tough situations out on patrol.
Police Academy is a 1984 American comedy film directed by Hugh Wilson in his directorial debut, and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. Its storyline follows a new recruitment policy for an unnamed city's police academy to take in any recruit who wishes to apply and study to become a police officer. The film stars Steve Guttenberg, Kim Cattrall, and G.W. Bailey.
The film was produced by The Ladd Company. It premiered on March 23, 1984. It grossed $8.5 million in its opening weekend and more than $149 million worldwide, against a budget of $4.5 million, and remains the most successful film of the series as of 2022. The film spawned six sequels in the Police Academy franchise.

I STRONGLY recommend police academy 2 and 3, i like to this they are even better than the first and have the wonderful Bobcat Goldthwait
Absolutely, they are a MUST! Lmao
4 was my favorite as a kid, with the skateboarders that include young David Spade!
I'm going to have to say citizens on patrol is the most hilarious movies from this franchise
Agreed!
I agree
Fun Fact, the tall guy who pushes down the wall in the training sequence was Bubba Smith, who did play in the NFL. He played for the Baltimore Colts in 1967, The Raiders in 1973, The Houston Oilers in 1975, and The Michigan State Spartans in 1964.
I thought I missed him finding that out.
Oh, the irony!😂
Wasn't he Al Bundy's rival when he scored that one touchdown?
I didn't have fun with the fact. I'm sorry
@@keithharrissuwignjo2460yep.
@@keithharrissuwignjo2460
yes he was The Big Guy from Al’s rival High School on Married With Children
The podium scene is the highlight of the whole Police Academy series!
Marion Ramsey (Hooks) said in later interviews that she was proud of this movie because it was one of the first times in movies that you saw a black man standing up for a black woman in the face of racism, when Hightower flips the car after Dopeland uses a racial epithet. The 80s was an odd transition time, when movies would use racism as a gag and show some progressive attitudes at the same time.
They acknowledged that racism exists and is actually widespread. And also clearly showed that it is not ok (only villains of the story are racists).
I'm so glad you're watching it. My grandma and mom watched these movies with me all the time as a kid. Even to this day, you do the blue oyster theme around us, we laugh hard, and join in. As for my favorite, it's a tie of 3,4, and 5
11:20 the military/gun nut is the only one that doesn't duck, because he knows the shotgun hasn't racked another round yet, nice touch there :D
That subtle head-shake, too, when everyone else ducks, terrified. "Amateurs." Eugene Tackleberry for the win!
the first 2 Police Acadamy movies are the best. the second one introduced comedian Bob Goldthwait (aka Bobcat) who started appearing in additional movies through the 80's and early 90's. for my 30th birthday in 1994 my mom took my wife and I to see him live on stage at a local comedy club... the first 5 minutes into his act I thought I was going to have a heart attack I was laughing so hard!
The actress you though you recognized was Kim Cattrall (most famous as Samantha in Sex and the City). She was in many comedies at the time like porkys and more.
*howls* 🤭💀
@@katiestewart5688Lassie I think it was.
Bubba Smith (Hightower) was a defensive end on the Colts, Raiders, and Oilers. Always loved seeing him on screen 💜
Is it him in the tv series also? He is so high there that his face is never seen.
I highly highly recommend sticking with the Mahoney (Steve Guttenberg) era, which is 1-4. Most of the main cast stayed through the entire series though. But there was a steep fall off after 4 that never quite recovered. 1 ,4, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7. The first film was the only one that was rated R. The second film which introduces several new characters recurring in later movies like Mauser, Zed, Sweechuck and Proctor. If you want to watch them. I'd suggest them in order and stopping at 4 (Citizens on Patrol).
TIL there were 7 Police Academy movies.
He was in the NFL. That's former player Bubba Smith!!
I am so happy you watched Police Academy. I LOVE this movie. It is too dang funny. It was one of my favorites as a kid and still just as hilarious as an adult.
As an 80s kid im loving this reaction. Bringing in the nostalgia
Definitely do police academy 2,3,4,5,and 6. That was a Pontiac Trans AM. Also the guy yelling at Hightower after hitting the back of his car was the director of the movie
My father loved this movie. He got me into the movie series. I love Michael Windlow, he is amazing with his lip performance. I also love G.W. Bailey's personality, he still has that sarcasm in the Closer and Major Crimes tv series.
The guy playing Hightower was in the NFL. He used to play for the Baltimore Colts. He also played for the Los Angeles Raiders and the Houston Oilers.
Hightower was played by Charles "Bubba" Smith who played professional football in the NFL across three teams and then retired to take up acting.
Great reaction! 😊
The first 4 movies are my favorites of the "Police Academy" movie series. 5 and 6 are watchable, but not as great as 1 - 4. Hope that you continue on with this series. At least with 2 - 4.
Looking forward to your next reaction. 😊
So in answer to your question about shaving when going into the military, there's a couple answers.
Some of who are that it creates a uniform look amongst recruits and sort of equalizing them.
A shaved head requires less care. Also, a shaved head fits in a helmet and other protective gear easier.
Another is it's a way to combat potential lice infestations.
That is hilarious that you said Hightower should be playing football or basketball or something. He's not in the Hall of Fame but he was a very well known NFL football player=
Bubba Smith, DT,
Michigan State
1967-71 Baltimore Colts
1973-74 Oakland Raiders
1975-76 Houston Oilers (nine total playing seasons)
111 career games
All-Pro: 1 year
All Conference: 2 years
Pro Bowls: 2
him and Al Bundy had an amazing rivalry.
@@markmac2206 Spare Tire!
Tackleberry doesn't jump away when Leslie Barbara aimed the shotgun at the other cadets and him.. because he knew the chamber wasn't loaded...
Police Academy movies were a huge part of my childhood. I like the original, but I love the sequels. My cousins and I loved to watch parts 4 and 5 over and over again. I can't say anything about the 6th one because I never saw it. I do hope you watch part 2 next. Each one gets funnier than the last.
Love the original and the series as a whole, but my favorite by far is Part 4:Citizens On Patrol.
You never see Hightiwer (Bubba Smith ) run in these films. He got his knees busted in his NFL career, so they made him knock the wall down or something like that show of force instead running. Its kinda running gag how strong Hightower is. He is also one of my fave characters with Tackleberry (David Graf)
I used to watch this all the time as a kid. The first 2 are great. Some of the other sequels were ok -- not great, but entertaining enough. Although I never understood those podium scenes when I was a kid and I'm certain my parents had seen the movie, but somehow still let me watch anyway. 80's movies were on another level haha.
I think you're going to enjoy the whole series (except 7) its a well worth series to watch.
Man, what a throwback! Great reaction!
I was 13 and saw this in the theater in nyc in 1984. I forgot how damn funny it was.
Yeah, it _is_ like a buncha snl sketches, but so what, like that hasn't been gold before.
See PA2 asap!
Depending on the properties. Also, if it is a federal or state property. Security can use firearms as long as they take the proper training and get the proper paperwork.
I love how you superimposed your image during the podium scene, that was AWESOME!!!!!
"I'm Gonna Be Somebody" is a GREAT, feel-good tune!
Seen Michael Winslow on his tour once, and he was truly phenomenal (favorite being him dubbing sound effects from Star Wars). Also George Gaynes who played Lassard was born here in Finland in 1917, just before we got our independence from Russia.
I'd also have to say I do have a soft spot for Lt. Harris; he's just so fun antagonist, and constantly great from movie to movie.
The guy that Hightower hits in the back of the guys car, was the Director Hugh Wilson who gets out of the car to confront Hightower,
Nice that you knew Winslow was before watching this movie.
"That dude should be in the NFL..." Yeah, funny you should say that
Knew you'd love this. Each film is great in it's own way... this one because they spend so much time getting to know them as underdogs. As for my favorites after this one, I'd have to say it goes pretty much in order. Can't wait for you to see more. Great reaction!
I love Michael Winslow in this movie. Actually in all the movies. His parts often have nothing to do with the plot but they're my favorite parts!
They get to being like how you imagined them to be, Mello, full of more practical jokes & chaos, as they go along, at least they do in 2, 3 & 4. After that, they drop off. But the first 4 are definitely the best of the series. I personally felt like they were still finding their footing in the first one. But once Proctor & Zed & Sweetchuck & some of the other characters join the current cast starting with the very next sequel & are no longer rookies anymore (Lt. Harris will leave & be replaced by this guy named Mauser, but Harris will then return for the remainder of the series, btw), then I think you would really start to enjoy them a little more. I myself grew up having seen the 3rd & 4th films more than the others, so the 4th film in which they train local citizens is one of my personal favorites. Give it a couple more films & I think you will see why people love this franchise even more..
my favorite Police Academy is a tie between the 4th and 5th films, the 4th one has a lot of extra players, like Bobcat Goldthwait and Randall Tex Cobb, whom the latter was in a TON of movies. then the 5th movie was the Beach episode of the series.
This is a core memory watching this movie as a kid. Some family friends had the first three and let me borrow them and I instantly loved these they were do funny. But ur reaction to the podium scene had me dyinnn🤣🤣
All these movies are great in my opinion, they're just fun, and any minute with Michael Winslow is the best.
Always good to see a new Police Academy reaction. Hope you do a reaction to the 2nd one, it's a great sequel.
I know it may not be as popular of a movie - but I think it gives the same weird but funny vibes as Police academy; is the movie Mannequin.
As for the rankings of the police academy academy movies; I have to put the first one in the top spot. Just so nostalgic.
6:24 skin color plus he figures they’ll do whatever he wants them to do no questions asked. 7:12 because he wants them to fail out or quit. 10:51 that was the style back then. Over the years guys shorts got longer and girls got skimpier. 19:53 that’s where he was prior to joining the academy. 20:16 that’s how a lot of stuff happens. The cadet changed clothes so they wouldn’t see him as a cop. 21:24 love how Lassard had to think for a moment before saying whether to fire. 22:47 it’s funny how Tackleberry acts after the riot. He really wanted to shoot a gun. I’m betting he failed joining the military.
Blue Oyster Bar !!!!!🤣 Dancing Just Dancing!
That tango scene at the oyster bar 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hightower was played by Bubba Smith who played in the NFL
went on a PA binge recently, honestly enjoyed them all. started to go downhill after CoP, less adult jokes, but they were still watchable
cutting the hair in the military is like why Monks do it, it's to let go of the material and focus on learning.
It has been a requirement for so long that it is both a rite of passage and a tradition. Short hair has become the norm for almost all services for ease of uniformity, convenience, and safety. While regulations slowly adapt and stay, the induction haircut has become a timeless part of many military traditions.
These were my introduction to R rated comedies as a kid in the 80s. Probably why I'm so whacked
Aw brings back memories of watching these movies with my Gran. Don't remember this one the 2nd,and 3rd I think .Big congratulations on getting to 201k Subscriber's . Your hard work and consistency for the last year all paying off. And with your cheeky charm goes without saying . Sending lots of love. Until tge next one ❤
Whenever I'm asked what my favorite movie is, my immediate reply is "Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol." Everyone knows I'm a film aficionado & even took a couple of years in film school. I can quote lines from some of the most obscure movies & have encyclopedic recall of release years & cast/crew. I grew up with a hearty intake of Steven Spielberg & and George Lucas' films. My admiration for filmmaking goes from Coppola to Tarantino & everyone in between. I have an unquestionable love of sci-fi, fantasy, & adventure epics.
That being said, my answer of PA:4 is my favorite movie is usually taken as a joke. But the funny thing is, I think it might really be so. I had that thing on VHS & wore out the tape.
I grew up in a very abusive houshold. Got beat at lot, found my refuge in movies. Sgt Callahan, Hightower, and Tackleberry helped me through some rough times ❤
Swedeeen!!
One of my favourite movies growing up, the second and third are just as good!
Random funny thought 🤣 💭 Maybe Mahoney got the daisy dukes and "One in the oven" shirt from the guys at the blue oyster bar? 😂 My theory is he usd to work there as a bartender so he friends friends with some of the bar's patrons 🤣😂😂
16:51 The driver who gets angry after Hightower hits his car is Hugh Wilson, the movie´s director.
Loved this movie as a kid and i still do
One of the Police Academy movies has a fantastic skateboarding chase.
4... Citizens on Patrol
I've seen Michael Winslow at Zanies here years ago and I have to say to my surprise he can do EVERYTHING here and a bunch more live. His set was AMAZING.
"Why does he have a gun?" is something people have probably been asking about Tackleberry since he was in kindergarten.
@Mellverse
I highly doubt you will see this message but..I been battling very severe depression..I've been thinking of ending it more and more lately...but I found your channel and its.been making a difference seeing your reactions make my day better and make me smile..alot of them were how I was feeling when I first watched an episode. So thank you for giving us the content you do it is a small ray of light filling my life back up again
The big guy that played Hightower actually was in the NFL in real life in his earlier years, but then took up acting. RIP to Bubba Smith (his real name)
This franchise is so fantastic!!!!! 😆😆😆😆😆
Oh, you watching a classic today!!!!
Did you know the actor George gaynes Who played Eric lassard was born in finland
The only thing I wish they would’ve done is to put Mahoney in a cadet squad leader position mid-way through the movie, which he initially resists, but then finds his calling.
The top police officer was a football player in the 90s
Awesome reaction of my favorite movie!!!!!😊😊😊😊
3 was my favorite. The added cast all bring something new to the franchise in 2 & 3.
I didn't realize so many people knew about Police Academy to have so many requests. I really did enjoy the movies.
Michael Winslow is soooo talented. Check out his cover of Whole lotta Love. He sings the guitar solo!
Awesome Movie and Work Bro, Thanks 👍👍👍👍👍 Greetings from Helsinki, Finland 🇫🇮🇺🇸🇫🇮🇺🇸🇫🇮🇺🇸
Citizens On Patrol is my favorite
The white female recruit is Kim Cattrall, who was also in Sex and the City, and played Lt. Valeris in Star Trek 6. Rumor is that she posed for some nude pics on the Star Trek set wearing pointed Vulcan ears, and actor/producer Leonard Nimoy ordered the pictures to be destroyed.
I miss the 80s. I was 10 when this movie came out.
My man, i just discovered you die to Prince of Egypt and youve made my night
This is a classic. Still holds up today.
This is just an intro into these characters. They actually develop into quite the A-Team police squad
This one was enough my love 😂. Kinda like a modern day 'Airplane' movie (back in the day of course 😉) xx
The girl in the limo is the actress who plays Samantha in Sex and the city, Kim Cattrall.
You missed one of the funnier parts. The "FACESMASH" of cadet Copeland. While Mahoney, and Barbara were emptying their trays, Banks, and Copeland approached Mahoney to antagonize him, and Copeland grabbed some mashed potatoes and told Mahoney what he was going to do. He got to ON YOU MARK, GET SET, and before he got to GO, Barbara swung his tray, and face planted it in Copeland's face.
Fricking loved watching the Police Academy movies as a kid
Bubba Smith is one of the bests defensive end's in 70s.
Oh yes! Welcome to the world of police academy! 1-4 are worth your time. After that, Mahoney isn’t in the series anymore and you can tell the movies are missing the key ingredient.
Dont know Bubba Smith? "Imma count to 3.....3."😂
Awesome man, this are the times and movies u just wazched enjoyed and laughed ur ass of.
Just awesome
The woman in the limousine you recognized was Lassie. If you want to know why the call her Lassie you have to watch Porky’s.
Yes.. The gorgeous Kim Cattrall of Mannequin, Star Trek 6, Big Trouble in Little China and probably most widely known as Samantha in Sex and the City... Most recently she was future Hillary Duff in the How I Met Your Father series for Hulu.
They Do Become Actual Police Officers, Part 2 Is Called Thier First Assignment, and is just about as good as this one. theyre all ok to varying degrees except 7, its a shitbomb. i would say my favorites are a tie between this one and 4
How I rank the Police Academies, from LEAST to BEST:
Part 7 - Made too late, the ship had sailed, everyone wants to move on, Jones is the only character who looks alive.
Part 6 - Movie has nothing to do with the academy, series is past its prime, but the ensemble still is solid and it's good to see Fackler back.
Part 3 - Not bad, just too much rehashed humor from the original.
Part 2 - Very good for a sequel, just not one of my favorites.
Part 1 - Great introduction, nuff said.
Part 5 - Least "offensive" up to this point, unique setting, carefree fun, remaining cast easily fills the void left by Mahoney's departure.
Part 4 - All the best characters are there, skateboarding, welcome back Harris, featuring Billie, Spade, & Stone, funky title song, thin plot but a guilty pleasure, deserves its deleted scenes edited back in.
Bruh most security carries a gun, there just usually hidden asf. Speaking from experience😂
As for shaving heads in the military...On one hand it's just practical, keeps it out of the way, and one less thing to worry about in the morning. On the other, to be blunt, is to remove any individuality....the military has no intrest in you "expressing" yourself or thinking your cooler/stylish/besster looking than anyone else...once your all "equal" they can start making soldiers
It is silly and stupid. But also funny :-) Love Mr sound effect guy, Hightower, Tackleberry. Do also watch (the extremely shortlived) TV series.
Complete brain fart. I briefly mixed up Police Academy and Police Squad in my head. Do watch Police Squad the TV series with Leslie Nielsen 😊
Omg Mello!! I'm sooo excited you finally reacted to one of my favorite 80s movies! Its such a comfort movie franchise for me! ❤❤❤ I even used to watch the cartoon! Please please do at least the 2nd 3rd and 4th one too! 🙏🙏🙏 They are really funny!
P.s. I love Hooks, Tackleberry,Jones, etc...soo much. All the characters are so unique and have the funniest eccentricities 😂😂
Great video... 3 & 4 are the best.
If you like the chemistry between Steve Guttenberg and GW Bailey (Mahoney and Harris) also check out 'Short Circuit'.... don't bother with Short Circuit 2 though...
One of my childhood classic movies
You’re right. This is uneven pacing. The first one feels like it’s not sure what kinda movie it wants to be. Raunchy comedy, or underdog ensemble film that is also kinda funny, but is more heart warming. 2 and 3 are way the best of the series. Also 4 has its moments and 5 is cool too. I’d say 2-5 are worth checking out. After that, no way.
The 2,3,4 are the Best
Okay, so let me list my favorites in order of personal prefererence:
1) Police Academy
2) Police Academy 5: Mission Miami Beach (controversial opinion, everyone else hates this, I do love it)
3) Police Academy 3: Back in training
4) Police Academy 2: First Assignment (or some such)
5) Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol
6) Police Academy 6 (don't remember the subtitle)
7) Police Academy 7: Mission in Moscow
Just bought the collection. 1 & 5 are my favs
The first four movies of this franchise are so good!!! I recommend you to watch them
Number 4 is probably my favourite but the first 4 are all equally good, fun movies.
