I see a couple of comments here of people complaining about "tempo changes" and "unclear notes" during this LIVE performance, saying that Tiffany Poon's recording on her channel is a lot better. Do you not understand that when you are on stage, you generally play at your worst due to the immense pressure, not to mention the ability to have as many takes as you need before you post a satisfied recording on your channel. To compare the two is laughable.
I know this all too well. Performing on stage is always a nightmare because i feel like im incapable of displaying what im actually capable of.... b l e g h
Say that to Jimmy Page....
Yes, definetely! And the funny thing about this comparison is, that it's just wrong. If you consider these things you mentioned (tempo changes, unclear notes etc), this is clearly a better performance than the other video. But of course you are right.
@@modern-piano-arrangements her recording on her channel is better, idk what you mean.
@Gus Carmelo yea, I've been using flixzone for years myself =)
It's not a competition based on technical ability... everyone that enters this competition has great technique. It's about the musicality you're being judged on.
LiNingAir and key word on musicality is SUBJECTIVE.
@@milostopalovic9765 well the jury are great pianists and musicians so surely they have more experience and knowledge to decide who gets to the next round rather than a person that says musicality is subjective
@@brunoescoto9630 Also the members of the jury have different opinions !
@@milostopalovic9765 Indeed.
^..^~~
100% agreed
0:07 those subtle dynamic changes are perfect
i love how tiffany's left hand jumps hard at 0:05 so satisfying to watch
its literally the easiest part of the etude
affafsgsg agfstayxyshsb never insinuated anything about difficulty...
affafsgsg agfstayxyshsb bruh
affafsgsg agfstayxyshsb it’s actually hard to jump ur wrist so high while playing fast
@@jun-ob6sk not entirely relevant to the comment, but okay...
1:43 tiffany poon is the only pianist I've watched that has done a great job in this part. The left hand really emphasised the notes.
Her and frederic chiu, they both nailed the 'con più fuoco possibile'
Listen to Freddy Kempf.
She went all in on 1:40. What an awesome transition of crescendo up to that. Wow.
She's the only pianist in the competition who played that part correctly.
"the tempo needs to be faster" "It needs to be more aggressive" "A for effort" WELL I LOVE IT, That was beautiful truly. I love her expression, emotions, tempo, everything! You made this piece come to life.
Have you watched aimi version? That true beauty I think
Faster, will lose Intelligibility.....in fact this young Pianist allows the Harmonic changes to be heard.......Speed will stumble the Bass Lines and the Arpeggios become a "torrent of clicking Piano-sounds".....not a very Good Result..........this young Pianist makes the listener hear and capture this Piece more accurately......
this version is so good
This lacked emotion
Music is art, it's inherently subjective. It's totally fine for you to like her performance. But it also means you have untrained ears and you are a layman.
1:42 the legato Is perfect!
Its just padel...
Cool Kid you mean pedal also I bet you liked your own comment
@@Paul-yj2wu no i will tho so i can prove
Cool Kid ok ty
Gabbi_042 it’s staccato with pedal mate, you’re a beginner trying to look professional but failed terribly
Someone appears to be taking a nap at 0:48 elapsed.
omg lol
Jeez that’s so disrespectful

I genuinely laughed out loud reading this comment

I find this to be a fitting tempo for a big hall like this. As a performer you have to always think about the last person sitting in the last row and how the music is going to sound to that person. If you play any faster than this it’s going to be just a puddle of notes for the last row. Besides, this tempo works incredibly well in any case. It adds to the meticulous character of the piece, almost frantically pedantic
But it's the Chopin competition, not a concert, they aren't looking for that consideration in a performance. Fair enough if that was intentional but I doubt it since she is clearly competent enough to realise that wasn't going to get her through to the second round in this competition. After all in this context she is performing for the judges and the audience are just bystanders.
This is the best performance of this piece I've heard. Absolutely masterful. Wow!
Really?
Look at the performance on her channel, since she hasn't got any pression it's just perfect.
You’ve never heard this piece then
@@Numberonesorabjifan yeah me too, close your eyes and listen, its not about playing speed.
no matter is the pedalling or the articulation, overall is genuinely amazing, despite few muddy places, but look at 0:42! The best interpretation of the section . Plus her power shifting and the smoothness of the melody are truly amazing. About her poise, I think this is what the real pianist should be, which is natural , pulchritudinous.
did you really just use that word
I am binge watching all the op. 10 no. 4 of the Chopin piano competition this year in the prelim round. TBH, this version is literally better than all those 10-4s in the prelim.
That's because you know shit and you have no judgment in music.
Imo Bruce Liu has the best op 10 no 4 I’ve ever heard
HER DYNAMICS ARE INSANE
It is like she been doing this for years
@@irarelycomment2047 she practiced 24 hours a day, while Lang Lang did 40 a day
She plays with such an ease... I love this interpretation!

This is amazing performance. This is my favorite Etude in C sharp minor Op. 10 No. 4.
There is not a lot of Chopin Etude in C# Minor...

I love watching her fingers go!! Awesome Tiffany!
0:34 beautiful performance; however, this consistency of rhythm is probably what got her expelled from the competition, unfortunately.
Xyriak there is nothing wrong with this part?
JDestroy I meant 0:34
@Elijah Kim 김기성 it is called a rhetorical statement dumbass
Elijah Kim 김기성 Maybe you should check your punctuation before criticizing others’.
Elijah Kim 김기성 Why don’t you?
Amazing playing. She is so inside the music that it passes into you.
When excellent is still not good enough.. How high was the standard in the competition!!!
too high
The accuracy, control and tone is out of this world! Very humble and not show off performance
Brillant, her technique is incredeble
If you thought this was good, listen to her later recording on her RUclips channel
It’s even better

Tiffany Poon should have made it to the next level! I go to Manhattan School Of Music and she plays like other students in other institutes!
Exact technicals and phrasing (bravo!) but listening to Trifonov or Wang is like being transported to another world. They actually play "Presto" vs "Allegro" or "Vivace" -incredibly hard without the usual result of a blur or muddled notes.
Trifonov butchers this. Which Wang? All the 'Wangs' I've heard are inferior. Sometimes I wonder if you guys actually have ears.
@@JL-fh4qw Is this why you're music director at the Met or critic for the TImes? LOL No wait, you're a YT poster who criticizes everyone because you alone "know" these artists are messing up. Do you laugh or cry at such blather?
@@smb123211 You cannot even tell how inaccurate Trifonov is, if you can't even tell the difference in technique you have no qualifications as a music critic

Good job. I make it a point not to criticize what I can't do. She's great. Did I like it? Yep Actually, I was watching to see
what she was doing so I could learn to be better. Maybe Artur Rubenstein could criticize, but I just enjoy and learn.
Remarkable .... not even just the technique, but the interpretation and sound she pulls out of the piano...
This wasnt good at all but this is ruclips.net/video/3XbRkYCBBVg/видео.html
She has her own 2017 recording. It’s better than this. She played with more passion. ruclips.net/video/Jjxq6IFNLVM/видео.html
I love you Tiffany😍
Was für ein Geist, die wahre Herrin, schön!
Fantastisch!
Absolutely AMAZING . . . .
Looking at this I am still surprised she didn’t make it past the first round. Compared to her other recordings she may have had a „bad“ day by her own standards (also with the other pieces she played) but I am surprised those minor imperfections really made the difference. This is still awesome stuff.
she was dangerous to the favorites, they eliminated her ASAP -- sad thing
i enjoyed so much. i watched this in full speed mode...
since I can't play a lick of piano..I think she is effin brill!
Tiffany Poon had already been eliminated at First Stage. Why did those idol's fans still keep writing many malicious comments on RUclips about her playing in this competition?

thats sad
Bcos piano students like us still can’t play any Chopin s etudes 😭😭😭
Honestly I prefer this tempo. Personally I think it sounds kind of ridiculous when people play it at Richter's tempo, it always loses some amount of clarity in the layers and counterpoint by nature of the notes not having enough time to resonate. This sounds intense, dramatic, and articulated!
Looks like the video got sped up. Lol
I loved what she did here.
BRAVO‼️
Wow!!! You go girl!!!
brilliant
In my opinion, this is the best rendition of the piece out there. So finely balanced, the agitato is perfectly paced and expressive with the melody floating above the humming background. Eons better than the heavy handedness of Seong-Lin Cho's version (who won the competition).
Beautiful legatos
素晴らしい!
Wow 🤩
excellent !!
Where is that guy who claims that Tiffany speedy up her videos?
Play very well
I guess people who criticize Tiffany for tempo changes just don't understand that music is a language, just like "English" is a language. Tiffany is telling a dramatic story here! Her intonation while "Speaking" in the language of Music is a voice that fluctuates just like the human voice changes in pitch and duration while one tells of an exciting adventure... This Etude has no time for mechanical precision and it would be silly to listen to a person speaking in English with a monotonous, metronomic voice. Tiffany's performance is just wonderful. it is so brilliantly performed: a creative, tempestuous, TORRENT! Tiffany is a fantastic talent. Hey guys, stop trying to give Tiffany piano lessons already! A great pianist is NOT a mechanical man (woman)... One must not play this Etude with rigid precision at 78 RPM! Now, this performance is ART! Wow!
gonna say, I recognise that etude anywhere
I think i know why she didnt pass through... because of small rhythmic inconsistency after 0:30
i think you mean tempo, she's a bit in a hurry there
@@kartmannchoi9709 yup
And a bad use of sustain. Juries hates when someone uses it too much
@@nicolasantony310 yeah it's easy to over use sustain pedal with Chopin

I noticed nothing wrong except the fact that she played the notes a little softly :P

OMG look at the lady on the right of the vids, she's falling asleep =))
Jim Hawkins how is it even possible to fall asleep to this 😂🤔
Oh My ... At first I thought she was just turning her head to get a better view but as I watched. I think your right! She's sleeping!
its round one. You literally hear the same piece dozens of times. I'm not surprised that she is falling asleep.
It's not so uncommon, I have watched the competition before and seeing one pianist after the other playing basically the same thing does get boring, even if you absolutely love Chopin.
She must be uncultured in such a masterpiece
Past Chopin Piano Competition was really unfair. Why do the world sticks with lingling’s, Tiffany or Natalie Schwamowa really deserved winning.
