I dont know of any pianist who does not make mistakes; Horowitz and Rubinstein were known to make frequent false notes. Most people who won these competitions did not make any international career afterwards and many great pianists never won anything. In fact often times it is the second or third prize that gets to be known and not the first prize.

    • @RandomPianoDude1990

Yeah that's a great point. Many competition judges or music scholars forget that it is actually the audience who are the "real judges", as they are the ones that PAY TICKETS to watch the musicians perform, and the audiences does not enter the concert hall looking for perfection, they enter to FEEL something, to be CONNECTED from the musicians. So, if the competition judges' choice cannot represent the audiences' choice, that competition means nothing to me, and means nothing to the musicians too.

Of course, the greats like Horowitz et al have made mistakes but I think during very difficult sections where it's easier to miss a note. I enjoyed her performance a lot and was surprised and disappointed that she made a mistake like this at the end. It wasn't a difficult area and slightly spoiled the experience. It's sort of like making a great ice cream sundae with all the toppings and then you start to eat it and then find a spoiled cherry on top. That might be all you remember of it. This girl is a very talented performer, definitely a prodigy, but as I said, this mistake seemed like a very big blunder to me. And she knew it by the face she made right after. imho ;)

Fortunately Tiffany plays better in concert than in competitions, and usually her Chopin is the best. I watch exclusively classical music on RUclips, and by chance hit one of her self made studio recordings on her channel. Despite some oddities I was impressed by her elegant and gentle playing, and now I am a hardcore fan and supporter of her. Her last live-streamed recital at Gilmore Festival was a star moment.
...Hitting a wrong note in the last chord sucks. I hate when that happens, and it happened to me and to some of my colleagues... in concert!

She really didn't have to go from mid air to the keys like that. Watch 9:33 again. Should have pushed in the keys after placing the fingers on top - then the mistake would've been avoided with certainty. I would have also used both 2 and 3 on the right hand to play that one G for improved accuracy and power.

But this is a competition, which the best of the best should win, Tiffany is not bad, she is simply fantastic in her performance, She deserves all the credit for simply getting to the point of participating, it is a chance that not much had.

Just because you cannot play better than Poon doesn't mean you can't criticize her performance. Musical criticism is based off of what you hear. You don't need to be a great pianist....or even a pianist at all in order to find something you don't like about the performance. I, as a conservatory-trained pianist, show respect for Ms. Poon, but would have to disagree with many things she does. I feel this performance is a great disappointment in many ways. Lots of rushing.....overpedaling and aggressive touch. Sadly, many liberals act very agitated when somebody criticizes a particular pianist.

Just because everybody can say anything doesn't mean your "criticize" has some value. "A conservatory-trained pianist" finding "lots of rushing, overpedaling and aggressive touch" ? While her performance could improve in maturity and construction, her playing has absolutely not any of the defaults you would like people believe you can understand. Professional critics are already usually pathetic looser, amateurs are just the sames.

Why do you think it has to be a liberal who gets agitated: That in itself is the most unprofessional statement I've heard in critiquing a performance. Conservatives don't get agitated?

I agree, she’s just an insignificant so-so pianist who has an ego quadruple her talent.

@@theodorehensley8982 I don't think he's talking about politics. I think he meant "liberals" as in people who are more forgiving and less critical.

I think it was not her best version of this ballade. Any way a very good pianist.
