    i have always been a huge fan of tiffany, but she outdid herself this performance. the way she nods her head, as if she is having a conversation. the musicality and emotions displayed just from piano to her put her beyond any other pianist, giving soul and life to a piece that already held so much potential. absolutely gorgeous.

    • @op-th1yx
      @op-th1yx 4 года назад +52

      @@thomasmartin6046 It is not the octaves that are difficult. They may seem intimidating but you just have to play them over and over again to make them fluent. The hard part is the last section where the theme returns at double tempo and triplets both in the right and left hand. And also to top that off you have to play the rapid triplets very light while playing the melody with your pinky. If this is not enough the part after the first theme where you play in C major is harder than you think. I actually hurt my hand playing some of the tenths not arpeggiated(I did end up playing them not arpeggiated) and all of this is easier than op 62? One or two fast scales and trills are harder than this? C'mon man.

    One of the possible reasons she's eliminated from advancing ---- She missed a chord on the left hand at 00:25. You can barely notice it but judges would immediately recognize that mistake and it's kind of a big no no in the piano world. Otherwise I really love her performance on this nocturne.

    • @rowanwild8445
      @rowanwild8445 3 года назад +9

      Well her performance was sure enjoyable, no doubt. But technically does not stand out among all the contestant, and there was Cho as well playing the piece... There was a quite resounding messed chord in the end of the middle section near 3:30 to 4:00 ~ as well. But more importantly and I think it's why she didn't pass, is because that's a nocturne and I think many people here are forgetting what it means. Her performance, throughout the whole piece, was just too fiery and passionate in my opinion for a above recital level degree of exigeance. That's not really, actually, the Chopin spirit this competition's judges are after. This extremely subtile mix of nostalgia, contemplation, grief, and sometimes only, fury.

    • @CreativelyMelodicDiscovery
      @CreativelyMelodicDiscovery 3 года назад +8

      @@rowanwild8445 Your insights are right on spot. But i do want to mention that most people do not care about the extremity of perfection. It's admirable to care about the originality of composer's intents but this is also why classical music industry is so culturally stagnant and antiquated. Fresh and diverse interpretations like hers should be cherished and supported. And individual creativity and musicality should be appreciated in this diverse and interconnected society.

    • @rowanwild8445
      @rowanwild8445 3 года назад +3

      @@CreativelyMelodicDiscovery Sure, I think we can all agree. The fact is that the recital culture has radicaly changed what the community expect of a pianist performer. Recitals have brought a new era to pianists, and the end of the late romantic era. To be fair, they indirectly even doomed the already ending great composers era by the way, as the expectations of a world-class pianist grew so ridiculously high and strict that it became nearly impossible to be both a renown performer and renown composer. So strict, that a standard has been established for almost every pieces, *there's a way of playing it* and so high that the amount of practice needed to get to this level left certainly no time for the increasingly complex composition techniques and sometimes not even for regular school education.

    • @CreativelyMelodicDiscovery
      @CreativelyMelodicDiscovery 3 года назад +2

      @@rowanwild8445 That is so very true! I remember having a master class on stage with a big time concert pianist and he was basically telling me that his way was the only way to play a certain piece. And my reply agitated him- "But I have my interpretations on the piece and you won't let me express it?" His expressions made me felt like my music freedom of speech was being silenced haha. After the master class I saw mixed reactions where some music students were giving me this look like "how dare you challenge him" but I also saw certain faculties were nodding and smiling at me with thumbs up and be like "yeah that's the way to do it." lol Anyway- I suppose you are still in the classical business?

    the very reverb-heavy sound from the room does this piece (and thus the performer) no favours. at times, it sounds almost like shes not lifting up the pedal for several chord changes straight, yet if you look at her legs, she clearly does. in a composition with crowded low harmonies such as this, this can become a real problem and make it all sound rather muddy.
    which is a shame, because as far as one can tell, she worked out the leading voice really nicely. maybe even a little too much for my personal taste. to this day, i come back to rubinstein for this one, his way of playing that crazy reprise is pure genius cause he resists the temptation to stress the melody too much, but finds the perfect balance between the melody and the growling harmony thunders below. a truly heartbreaking performance.
    still, this is also very very good! so she lost according to the comments? thats a shame.

      hit the nail on the head - i think she was eliminated in part because she selected a lot of pieces that have powerful bass lines but couldn't balance them against the melody particularly in climaxes (the barcarolle for example)

      i like tiffany's melody flowing, i think nobody can compare to her at this aspect, as for rubinstein, the little robotic, it's not that romantic compared to tiffany's dont u think ?

    • @zorglub667
      @zorglub667 3 года назад +4

      @@YeungMing007 well, of course this is always a matter of taste. personally, i just think that rubinstein had the famous polish (and polish only) "zal" way to emote down like almost nobody else. its this thing of resisting to get overly romantic, playing with a kind of noble and aristocratic distance, and letting the power of the composition speak for itself instead of overemphasizing the emotional impact of modulation and melody.
      its a fragile balance where pretty much every human of this world has a different opinion about what is right and what is not. where one person might think A is great and B is a bit robotic, the next person might feel like A is a bit overacted while B is absolutely spot on. theres no correct answer to such questions, obviously.
      having said that, when i "think away the room" and the smearing of harmonies that came from it (something you can only counteract as performer to a certain degree and the rest is beyond your control) - i do like this performance very much. still prefer the dosage of restraint exercised by rubinstein, but hey, if everybody agreed about whats perfect and thus everyone sounded like everyone else, that would be super boring :-)

      @@zorglub667 that's correct! Somebody like the melody to be played romantically and lovely. While some think it will be beyond their taste. Everyone has different taste, that's why we need different performers and composers.

      .....id agree ; ive heard several big name classical pianist s play this - i also keep coming back to Rubinstiens interpretation; he builds it beautifully to its finaly ; this performance is still worthy Though ; would really be interesting to hear her again in 20 yrs on the same piece 😏👌🙏🙏

    Tiffany‘s version is unique... she was young and passionate...At 04:07 she used a way that is different from other to perform. While other expressed the feeling of a silent desperation, Tiffany had more on that...it might be anger? or something other... It makes me feel even more emotional and despair...
    and…
    the sudden diminishing of volume at 1:09…perfect! Although other’s performances might also have their volume diminished at the same sentence, Tiffany’s performance is definitely more delicate. It seems that she is using the change of volume to emphasize that sentence as well as to create a atmosphere to make everything freezes in that moment…

    Dang Thai Son had huge power to influence the competition result. Three of his students won 3rd, 4th & 5th prize. Besides, exactly how many winners and finalists had made a personal connection with him in any way? Can any insider tell us the truth?

      +ClassicalLover I think, Dang Thai Son is going to make a fantastic income after Chopin Competition. Many pianists are eager to study piano with him in order to win prizes in the next Chopin Competition. More students = Make more money.

      +ClassicalLover If you look up the score on the website you'll see that DTS did not give a score to any of his students in all 3 rounds. That's how the Chopin Competition has always been. Teachers are not allowed to score his/her own students. So all in all, DTS seems to be a good teacher as his ability to produce finalists seems to be quite high.
