- First impressions and thoughts on the Camp Chef cast iron grill that resembles the Sportsman Grill design.
Future video of using it coming soon as well as a cooking review.
Yes bring back the sportsman grill. Love lodge! Lodge rocks!
Lodge is great 👍🏽
Looks good to me, Luis. Thank you for showing us this grill. Stay safe and stay cool
Wow… very interesting. It really seems to be a great grill. Really liked the asymmetrical placement of the handle. It solves the tilting problem in a very simple and elegant way. Great review, Luis!!! Cheers from Brazil 🇧🇷
Guess this video popped up on my RUclips suggestions based on my web browser searches and viewing history?
I’ve not seen this Camp Chef grill “in person” - found your review informative!
Early this spring (2023) I bought a Lodge Sportsman Pro as a way of getting back to the flavors of charcoal grilling.
Within two weeks of receiving it, being a “nice guy” 😇 brought me an older Lodge Sportsman Grill - with a mallard duck 🦆 design Fire bowl door (apparently a collector’s item?).
One thing that was missing from that grill I was given was the draft door. LoL! The ONLY part not available from the Lodge online store. I did find it for a few extra pennies on eBay 😊
Seeing that all the other parts were available as replacements… i built a third grill from replacement parts!
Subsequently, Amazon threw a suggestion at me. It was a “similar” grill sold by a company called Everdure. I couldn’t resist the price (just under $90).
So now I have four of these girls. And I also now know the “original” was a design sold by Birmingham Stove & Range (BSR).
My “replacement parts” Lodge has minor enhancements over Lodge’s earlier copy of the BSR (small side rails on the grill, notches that prevent grease accumulation at the sockets the grill feet land in).
The Everdure also has enhancements over the earlier designs. Dimensionally? The grill, Fire bowl grate, Fire bowl door are completely interchangeable. The draft door? Minor difference.
I like my Lodge Sportsman Pro. But I much prefer the older design… both Lodge’s versions of the BSR and the Everdure (which I suspect was copied from BSR).
You made a fantastic video on the new Camp Chef cigr19 grill!
Camp Chef has picked up the ball when Lodge dropped it! This should be called the Camp Chef Sportsmans grill! On a lark I looked up the Sportsmans grill and found the Camp Chef , I will have one as soon as I can get one. I don't care if winter is comming. You gave us a great look at the new grill. Camp Chef did what Lodge would not.
I can't wait to get one for myself. Camp Chef has made a new page the Sportsmans grill history. Lodge has egg on there face now.
To bad Lodge, you loose..... Welcome aboard Camp Chef!!!
Too bad it’s made in china though
@@godamgg4478 sometimes you just have to go with it....
Camp chef has some good stuff imo. Thanks for the video.
Thanks, I also think Camp Chef has done a great job with many of their products
Another great review...
Thanks I appreciate your support and thanks for watching
Thanks you always come out with the new it’s kind of nice. my only thought process lodge is a little heavier to withhold a little more heat. Well camp chef seems a little lighter built easier to travel. Only theory on my behalf considering purchasing one for camping do use with my cast-iron skillet. Thanks again
You can use two 8” pans or one 10” skillet with this grill.
Wow! My friend and I just purchased this grill, I haven’t open but looks interesting
So glad to know this so I can get my friends OFF MY BACK!!! I found a rusty, dusty, RUSTY, Lodge Duck In Flight series Sportsmans Grill. It is so much fun & they want it BADDDD after I cleaned it up, seasoned it, & let them sit around watching me cook burgers. LoL. Now I know where to send them.
I have the Lodge Wildlife series grill as well. They are great and I do like it a lot. Once I cook with this grill I will have a full review. Thanks as always.
Can't wait on that 1. I'm ready so I can learn.
Looks good
It does and I will have a cooking review soon
@@luisj.castironcooking looking forward to it.
good review, thanx...............
Thanks for watching
@@luisj.castironcooking been waiting for a review of this product for a while anyway..........
I think you can get old lodge sportsman’s grill on the website. Have to order it piece by piece
It’s like 216 dollars
Everdure's version has parts that are interchangeable with the Sportsman Grill except they use a two bail arm design which improves on the original. They also provide a nice cover and a grate lifter... all for $89. Just received mine today to put next to my original Sportsman. I am pleasantly surprised. Comes with a 2 year warranty
Gotta check it out, I haven’t heard of that brand
ngl this one looks better than the new sportsman pro grill. I like how the underside is tapered just like the new pro grill.
Yes that is one of my favorite features of this grill. Camp Chef did think this trough and improved on the Lodge design
@@luisj.castironcooking do you know the height measurement from the coal grate to the grill grate?
Thinking about using a high heat spray paint on the shell of my sportsman grill. Of course not the grill itself. Any thoughts??
I’ve seen it done and it looks like it holds up well. I’m thinking about doing the same on my Camp Chef. I don’t see any harm.
Im wondering if Lodge sold Camp Chef the rights (or molds) to this, OR if they abandoned the old Sportsmans Grill when their design patent expired? I have 2 LSGs but I am really enjoying my new-ish KickOff grill. Better than I expected to actually.
I think the patents expired which is why Lodge perhaps didn’t want to renew the patents and moved on to their own design
Great video. Thanks for pointing out the differences. I like the grate design on the Camp Chef.
Also how well does it fit the the Camp Golden Spike oval roaster? I believe you have the Cajun Classic one (Crawfish Lid) which is the should be the same size.
It fits really well, very minor over hang from the base of the oval casserole. I’m excited to give this a go and I’ll be posting a video of this guy in action soon. Thanks Lew!
I bent the bail on my Lodge Sportsman's grill. It stays pretty level when I move it, now
Thanks for the tip I have extra handles and I might give it a try
Merci mec👍
No problem, thanks for watching
Would the Camp Chef grill top work on the Sportsman grill and vice versa with the legs up?
What’s the weight difference?
Upside down yes right side up the feet do not match
Weight is nearly identical
Have you ever thought to test out any borough furnace cast iron products?
I have and I did notice they have their skillets in stock again
@@luisj.castironcooking Yeah their seasoned 5.5 quart dutch oven looks insane cool!
Other than the company's video,i have never seen any videos of people cooking or show casing their skillets. That would be kinda cool. I'm gonna search around a bit.
I am a bona-fide lodge whack, but I have a strange interest in their 5.5 quart seasoned cast iron dutch oven.
Would the fish fryer pan work on the camp chef?
Haven’t tried it but I will definitely check it out
More charcoal with the draft being more functional with the deeper bowl.
Correct
2-3 hour cook? What will you cook that long on a open grill?
Actually there is another channel on RUclips which cooks with sportsman grills and they cook a slab of ribs on these grills. They use either an oval roaster upside down or an aluminum foil tent to ensure they cook properly. Pretty cool I can’t remember if it was Teach-a-man to fish or Big Lew BBQ. Great channels and interesting videos with the LSG grill
@@luisj.castironcooking you are very right. There are guys out there that try to push that grill to do things it was not ment to do. It's just a hibachi grill, not a Weber grill. I have the Sportsman's dutch oven. I wonder if it will fit on this new Camp Chef grill. That lip that they added might mess things up...
@@luisj.castironcooking if you going to cover it, why not use a Weber Smokey jumbo grill... its way cheaper....
There are a few other copy cats out there, bruntmore , giantex and others
Looks like a clone of the Lodge
Same price as Lodge grill but made in 🇨🇳 I’ll pass
Is this made in China?
It is made in China
