- Today I will Unbox, assemble and cook on the NEW LODGE SPORTSMAN'S PRO GRILL. I will also cook the same thing on the original LODGE SPORTSMAN'S GRILL and compare their performance. Everyone has wondered what happened to the original grill, well the question has now been answered. I think this new version cooks just as well with fewer loose parts. Great review Backwoods..
Lodge should love you again - no anchor here 😊
Semper Fi
They only get the "boat anchors" on fails. So far this one is safe.
Good review, we got one from Lodge to review too. Thumbs up from us too.
It’s a really great grill! I really enjoy it. It is not perfect, but neither was the old one. Even so I like them both.
Also you did a fantastic job on those hens and this review.
I bought one as soon as it was released and have about 15-20 cooks on it now. It's perfect for daddy/daughter weekend burgers or steaks. Veggies cook up great too! Better have a heat barrier between it and your truck's tailgate if you plan any tailgating!
I use my LSG on the beach, put the sliding door inside flip the grill over and use a old belt to hold it all togeather while transporting.
I'd would of like to of seen Lodge make a larger version with a lid, And a fish fryer style lid for their new and old style grills
By far, the best review I have seen of this! Love your cooking!
Great! Looking forward to more videos. The Sportsman Grill videos are my favorite!!
Excellent review on the new grill and it’s new design. Thanks so much for the video!
❤️🇺🇸💙
I appreciate it Backwoods, ive been waiting on the sportsman pro review before i bought one myself. When it receives praise from a pro like yourself i know it has to be a quality product. Thanks again for all of the work you put in to make this channel one of my favorates.
lol this guy didnt buy it, lodge sent it to him so ofc hes gonnna jus say its good 🤣
Love it. thanks for the review. I believe we will be adding this to the outdoor arsenal if I can convince my wife. she has me on a hold pattern for outdoor cooking items.
simp
Nice problem to have because it means you must have a lot of outdoor cooking devices already.
Looks good. I'll get one as soon as I can, Thanks
Love your review! I have had the regular Sportsman Grill but might have to get this Pro as well.
Great job with the review! It’s great for those of us thinking of investing in one to see your review first. Great job!
Great video love the cook.
Great review! I liked the side by side comparison with the old Sportsman Grill and the demonstration of controlled surface temps for longer, slower cooks. Thank-You Mr. Backwoods!
From the history of the original Sportsman's grill, back in the early days when it was produced by BS&R: "The earliest of these BS&R Grills still had the four-legged design of the sad iron heater, though they quickly converted to a more stable three-legged design for outdoor use on uneven ground." With the Sportsman's grill, it could be set sturdy on rough ground because it only rested on three points. With the Sportsman's Pro, the grill rests on two long rails, and this suggests it may be more prone to wobbling on rough ground. I'm not an expert in this matter, and would appreciate a second opinion. On the other hand, there are fewer individual parts to lose and break (especially the the little "drawbridge" coal door, which was infamous for both), and this would mean you can expect an even longer lifespan from this grill than the original grill.
hello modemac, been watching these new grill videos myself and have thoughts on stability as well but first i feel the new positives outweigh the question of this issue...because even i can think of three fixes right off the top...1 stick a wedge under the lowest corner [maybe don't use wood...] 2 three well placed shim supports create a tripod base [metal bar stock?..] 3 get technical and rig up an angle iron, tripod support cradle that will become another part, while better minds than mine will get better ideas, i expect lodge will get down and make it good....at this point i'm not ready for the purchase, but i want one..!!.....
Yes it does wobble on uneven grounds
I reckon the new one cooked that bird the best . But that may have just been the cook . Anyway great stuff mate 👍
i want this one sooooo baddddd.....got the "kickoff grill" model cause they didn't have this one yet.....this one has so much more functionality than the kickoff.
Thanks for the review 👍 I do a lot of camping and outdoor cooking and found this helpful. Enjoy your videos 👌and thanks again.
See ya back, you were missed my friend. Speaking of missed, saw your turkey shoot/cook video. How I missed that one I do not know. Enjoyed it much. Been perusing all your content. Learned a bit and enjoyed them all. World around going to hell in a hand basket? Economy sucks? Gas prices suck? Want to forget about politicians and there stupidity for a while? Just wade into your content, grab a coffee, and get off the merry go round for a while.
Thanks for the vid!
Great review, just what I'm looking for. Thanks
Thanks for watching!
When the cooking is done I throw my coals into a coffee can with a tin foil lid on it to snuff them out. I’ll save them for if I need to add more during another cook so’s I don’t have to light up another chimney
Great idea!
LOVE your videos!!! Keep up the great work!
Thanks for watching.
If I didn't already have the original Lodge Sportsman's Grill, I'd certainly be wanting to get this one. Just the elimination of that annoying Lodge logo in the middle of the grate was a huge improvement. I'll stick with the original design as I've figured ways around easy cleanup (heavy duty foil lining), and I like the three legged no-rocking- unlevel-surface of four feet on the new one.
I appreciate your honest review, and I'll certainly recommend the new and improved one to anyone looking to get into serious outdoor cooking.
do you have both of the sportsman grills?
Stay tuned and subscribed for more on both grills.
great way to break in the new grill Cheers!
You don't have to dump the old sportsman upside down. A little dollar store hand dustpan and broom fit perfectly inside. It makes for nice easy cleanup.
Why would they put threads inside the firebox? The should have countersunk the screw heads in the firebox
Will you please do a video on the Camp Chef cigr19 grill. It's is alot like the old true Sportsman's grill... It is what Lodge should of done..
That grill goes for about $300 here in the Philippines, bought a LSG years ago here, at sbout $175! Had a table made for $25!
@11:01, i like using spray oils and i find "publix" generics equal or outperform the "high price spreads", most of all their butter spray.............
I agree. All of the Publix brands are awesome. Thanks for watching.
I’ve noticed mine doesn’t get nearly as hot as my BGE or my PK. I really wanted to like it. I sous vide so I pretty much only use them for searing.
they used to serve whole cornish hens in a big tray of gravy in the college dining room meal plan.
@6:50, i saw on one of these late breaking videos where the old bail was tried out on the new grill and it worked, seems like you can still get parts for the old grill, good luck on that..!!...
Great comparison! Looks like the new model doesn't burn as hot as the original. Like the Pro a lot.
I will be putting it through the paces. Thanks for watching Tim.
If it's too hot, use less cole, and spread it out a bit more... or make one side hot, and the other a cool side.....
Or you can save them up for the snake method on slow slow cooks
Great review. Perhaps you could try the kickoff grill as well. Given the weight issue, it may be the best option for camping.
Thanks for watching. Was not really impressed with the design of the kickoff grill and didn't want to do another "boat anchor" clip.
@@BackwoodsGourmetChannel it does remind me of the cook it all a bit. Lol.
Sorry to say, heat is heat. It does not really mater. Its what we lost when they stopped selling the true Sportsmans grill. It had history! And provenance! They took that all away. They should sell both! And let us make the choice. The grill tops are just about the same. The new grill does not have the cole door to move coles. That big ash drawer only catches the small stuff. You have to bash the bigger peices through it or still dump it out. Sorry, I like the old one more.... it is a touch stone to the past. They changed the new grill so much they should not call it a Sportmens grill, just the new Pro grill. Just sell both and let us buy what we want.... please give me a thumbs up if you think like I do...
Ps, I just got a IronMaster grill off the net. It has the top of the new grill with the bottom of the Sportsmans grill. It was about the same price of the new grill and about the same size. It's not the old Sportsmans grill, but it looks like it will be a keeper.
That's the grill you should put side by side with the
original Sportsmans grill. See what you can't get anymore compared to what is almost like the Sportsman's grill.
I will be doing further videos on this product. Again, they do NOT pay me.
I never said you were paid by Lodge. The videos you do are very good. I enjoy them. I only said my feelings on the new Pro grill and hope someday you would place the IronMaster ( the large one, 2021 I think) along side the 2 other Lodge grills and tell us what you think. I hope someday they will bring back the old Sportsman's grill even for a short time, but I won't count on that. The person I emailed with make that very clear. They won't make anymore. I was very shocked how blunt he was. Its to bad, I liked the old Sportsman's grill. So I will have to live with my IronMaster, it's just a sportsman grill with corners. It will work for me..... Thanks for all your time you put in your videos.... Enjoy!!!
Thanks, that's an honest, well balanced review. I'm not in the market for this kind of grill, but if I was, you've answered all the questions I would've had (and piqued my interest in getting one, actually). Question: How compatible with the various long griddles?
This was my first cook, so make sure you subscribe for more.
I saw someone using your moniker “Backwoods “ a video game “Hell Let Loose” was that you ? LOL
I don't game. So not me. Thanks for watching.
Nice
Glad I picked up the old model for $99.
The old one is great also. Thanks for watching.
I like the old grill better than the new one.
Wish they made an aluminum top you could take on and off while cooking.
I love my O.G. sportsman grill to much to replace her with a "modernized" imposter lol.
Great review. Does the griddle tray you used with the old sportsman (breakfast video) fit on the new one? I don't know the measurements for either.
In the state of California, everything causes cancer.
But... I want to watch right now! ;p
Looks like it cooks great; however, there are a lot of grills that cook great that cost under $180 dollars. What set the Lodge Sportsman apart from others in the price point was its Mid-Century style and fascinating history. Sadly, both of those things are gone now.
Hummmm...... I'll send you a FREE grill to review 🤔🤔(make sure you say it's better than the original)
Love, love, love your cooking videos...don't get involved in the reviews unless you are actually dishing out the money for a product.
I've used the original on your recommendation for awhile and it's a beast !
Thanks for sharing with us !
Do you have the new one?
Apparently you have not seen my "Complete Review" of the Lodge Cook-it-all.
oldtimer?
How did you modify your lid lifter so that you can lift your grill???
I did not modify the lifter. I modified the old grill for it to fit. This grill needs no modification for a standard lid lifter like I use to work. Thanks for watching.
Will my fish fryer and grill fit on the new grill?
You didn’t state which one you thought cooked better
Stay tuned and subscribed for more videos on this grill. I don't form an opinion after just one cook.
I respect lodge, but there's a grill called the Pico grill 760 thats literally, literally killing this grill.
The Pico grill is lighter, smaller, and just a better option. Like I said, I respect lodge, but between this
lodge model, and the Pico grill 760, I'll go with the 760 all day LOL 😕.
Absolutely no way!!!
the old grill was better an more simple
How so?
I like there product I JUST think the grill did not need to be reinvented . Anyway im going to get one
@@fishingshallowminded8600 lol
Too expensive for what it is
Fire is fire, there the same.... but the por grill can't be called the Sportsman's grill.... just call it the pro..... I still don't like it.....
Was crap then, and still is now ....
Please make a cookbook just in case the world ends soon 🙏🏿.
Great review! I like the side by side comparison with the old Sportsman Grill and the demonstration of controlled surface temps for longer, slower cooks. Thanks Mr. Backwoods!
The first cook went very well. Thanks for watching Steve.
