    you would have been better off drop bolt down from above, nut and washer underneath. while unpridictble, you might one day want to disassemble. bolting the way you did, heat and grime from use will make it impossible short of braking the bolt.

      @@canoestripper502 How do I know? I am 74 years old now and I have bought Lodge cast iron items since I was in my 20's. My mother-in-law gave me my piece..an Lodge 8" skillet. I still have it. This brand has stood the test of time of wear and how it cooks food. I also have my favorite brand of stainless steel cookware. I also have used it for 50 years and it still looks new. I have a large family so my cookware was used a lot.

    Great video.
    Why did Lodge change the design. The realistic answer is because they made it cheaper to manufacture. There are only 3 pieces to be make, instead of 7 pieces with the old one (including the bail handle)
    I have this model but always use my lodge sportsman grill. Hopefully they bring back the LSG

    • @MrCastIron
      @MrCastIron  Год назад +1

    Great review of the Sportsman's Grill. I will have to try your recipe for sautéed radishes. Years ago I remember seeing a recipe by another RUclipsr for oven-baked radishes. She said it was the only way she could get her kids to eat them and like them. Apparently, when they're cooked it tames the flavor and they're more mild. A raw radish can have a harsh, peppery bite to it. Cooking mellows it out.

    Either those are some huge chicken thighs or that grill has gotten smaller possibly. I also would suggest to season the cast iron grill grate with a high temp oil like grapeseed oil instead of a spray. I also wouldn’t ever cook in a beautiful cast iron skillet right next to a greasy chicken because it will coat the outside of the skillet with grease and stuff. The grill definitely looks smaller than the original out of the box. I’ve never had the radishes so I will definitely try that.

    I was shocked and dismayed when I looked at all the Lodge products including these griddles on the shelf in the stores. Heavy deep striations along the casting seams edges where it appears an untrained person ground off the casting seams, looked absolutely terrible. I even sent 4 pictures to Lodge, they replied they don't care, and it does not affect performance, which I already know. None of my other cast Iron cook ware from Columbia and China has theses horrible quality control issues. Not sure why Lodge refuses to update to longer handles on skillets and revamp their QC processes in their castings, very poor attitude from an American company.

    I got the older version that doesn't have the ash tray but I love mine. Had it for about 8 years and it still looks brand new. What Indo with mine is I cut a piece of aluminum foil and place down inside the charcoal area and run it up about 3 inches on tbe sides. Mine does have a damper on it but it is a small plate that slides back and forth. Once I am done cooking and the coal die out I just fold the aluminum foil up and remove all the ashes. It's a little more effort but it makes removing the coals easier and it also prevents salty sauces and grease from contacting the surfaces. The sportsman grill isn't really meant to cook large pieces of meat nor does it smoke although I did fabricate a cover for mine and it does pretty good. I am reallybgood about making sure my grate is always cleaned and then I wipe all surface while still warm with peanut oil. Would I pay 150.00 bucks for one....no but I got this as a Christmas gift and love using it. It's great for deer burgers, skewers, dogs and hamburgers and it really shines cooking pork chops. Not sure I like the new version shown here. Doesn't look and heavy duty and I definitely don't like the detached handles. End up losing those. Mine are attached and cannot be removed.

The grill base also has wooden handles. SO! 1grill base and 2 adjustable height racks. Used this hibachi since 1964. A lot! If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I don't grill with these very often so I gave the new one to my youngest son. When he learns it maybe he'll like it better than the old one if he ever uses the old one. He'll probably like it less than the the new one because he's gotten so used to the new one. Does that make sense? @@MrCastIron

    Lots of reasons I will stick with my old version of the original Sportsman’s which I’ve had since 2005. Still looks brand new because I clean and keep it seasoned all the time. Actually cleaning and seasoning the entire original is easier than doing this Pro version. Easier access to all surfaces. Draft door system on original much better, access door to fire bowl, etc…….

    MR CAST IRON (Mike). Really enjoyed this video. However, there was one major drawback; y’all made me hungry!! 😝. Question, when you pull the vent door open for more air flow, does the ash tray move too? Or is the ash tray located below the door mechanism? I couldn’t tell. Thanks, Papaw Dan! I’m glad we made you hungry, at least, lol! The draft doors and the ashtray are all one piece, so it all moves. When you open or close the draft doors, it is not moved enough that it doesn’t still catch the ash.

    I just recently got one of these for an early fathers day gift, since it was kinda heavy in the box, I had to move it for my wife....but I've used this three times already and its so quick and simple to use, big enough just for the two of us. What I would like to find is a cover for this. I do have a question, I debated about taking it with us on some trips, but it takes hours for it to cool back down. Do you have any tricks/tips on how to cool one of these faster?

Unfortunately, I don't have a cover, but maybe I should get one. The only thing really is a little time as far as cooling down the grill. After we cooked in the video, it didn't take all that long, maybe 30 minutes to an hour, and it was ready to put away.

    I used to use an electric starter on my grill. No dumping hot coals, just pull it out when the coals are ready. No nasty lighter fluid flavor.
    Dump the spray and oil the grids with regular cooking oil using a heat proof silicone brush.

They still sell all of the parts for the old version individually, and I just ordered all 9 pieces, including the cover, from their website. Today is the last day for their summer savings coupons, and with the coupon added I got mine for $144 plus tax and free delivery.
