    i would put a piece of flat brick or wood under your grill to keep from breaking your Glass table top. the bottom throws out a fair amount of heat against your table top ,but your video was awesome thanks for sharing

      @David Hardman David, your problem with melting the ice was more an issue of thermal mass than with heat rising. Convective heat rises, radiant heat, well, radiates, even downward. The only reason I watched this video was to see the glass break. What a disappointment.

    Cooking height is adjustable by flipping the cooking grate over with legs facing up for searing and cooking with pans etc. Good video! Thanks

    The easiest way to a control the heat is to place less charcoal on one side and and more on the other, I do this all the time when using mine. It works well

      Honey Island Outfitters , yeah, I built a better stand for it in my Grill area. It was hot but not smoking hot. Better safe than sorry though.

    Single layer of coals with just a few to fill in the holes is fine when cooking with just the grill but if you add the griddle on top then having the amount of coals you had works great to really heat up that griddle.

    I am sorry to say AS OF 2021 "LODGE" no longer makes THE SPORTSMEN GRILL. So if you would like one, you will have to get the (low quality) Chinese knock-off at a slightly higher price. Thanks LODGE

    Nice video! I’m going on 4yrs, with mine. Noticed the left, and middle get hot. Not so much on right side. Do you have any mods? Or advice.

      I have a 1941 Atlanta Stove Works Sportsman Grill. Wow, is it heavy! I found that for transporting it, I remove the grill, grate, and fire box door and haul those separately, then carry the grill. That's really saved my back!

      Haha - yep! I couldn't believe how heavy it was when I first lifted it! I had to figure a better way to move it. It's been suggested that I buy a Lodge version for cooking. I think I need to get something a little lighter and easier on my back, though! I really enjoyed your video, though. Thanks!

    I cannot believe you actually used this on your table. But hey, if it works! I'd suggest 2 concrete blocks laid sideways, then grill till ur heart desires. Very nice video, that red meat looks delicious.

    Not enough coles you need more coles . More grease on the grill box so your skin dosnt stick to it if you stand too close.

    I had one and it lasted over 20 years, so I just ordered another one. Spray it out with a garden hose and let it sit outside, no worries.

    Hello, why use a Lodge grill as opposed to a gas grill? Im new to cooking meat. Grew up in a vegetarian home. Just now trying to learn grilling/bbq-ing. Thanks!

      @@Avocado740 cooking over coals is a much better flavor. However, gas cooking is much easier for a beginner. Most people spit on gas before going to coals.

      Onecent yes, if you meter turn into a nice bed of coals. One of my favorites is white oak. It has a mild flavor on the spectrum of smoke flavors.

    Hi. I bought the same grill and I have the same outside glass top table. From the comments I realized it’s dangerous to use this grill on the glass top because it can pop up. I have a heavy flat stone which I can put between the glass top and grill, but the question is: Will the glass top table withstand the total weight of the stone panel and the grill? Hope you’ll see my comment soon.

      247addiction I would say yes because it is a Hibachi. It can get much hotter and can sear much quicker.

      shiftcon sometimes yes, it is ok. It doesn’t last long because it burns off. I’m mostly just trying to keep it from rusting. Never ever leave it outside in the rain.

      They aren’t really the same style of cook, I much prefer hibachi (this grill) over grill in this small outdoor cooking format.

      The Webber GA is far far more versatile because it has vents and a lid. this Lodge Hibachi survived one campout with me and because you cook above the sides of the grill the wind/rain/cold get your meal while the massive amount of coals underneath scorch the food. I like to control the heat, contain the heat, and be able to cook no matter what the weather.

      soak the grills in vinager 24 hours in a tub wire brush them and rub cooking oil in to them your done for next time like new

      Matt K yeah, it’s a region thing. Due to the dampness of the region, surfaces like brick and shingles that don’t get enough sun get stained black. It isn’t damaging but unsightly to some. North facing roofs get it really bad.

The house I grew up in got it real bad and even my current house will get it on the front due to lack of sun in the winter and it takes the concrete, etc forever to dry. Last house I was in I had to pressure wash the garage door often if I wanted it to look white, after a short time it would be green. lol.

      Im not trying to tell you what to do but put some 100% apple juice in a spray bottle and spray some on your deer meat while it's cooking ever once in while...it keep it moist and taste delicious

      Lodge seasoning spray is 100% canola oil, says it right on the bottle.
      I don’t like the apple spray technique, doesn’t add anything IMO.

      Teach a Man to Fish a man that works at the lodge store in Tennessee told me it was virgin olive oil. I took his word for it and bought the olive oil. Thanks for telling me that! I'll get canola oil from now on! I just got me a new sportsman grill gonna put it together today. I enjoy your videos I subscribed after watching this video! I've had good luck with the apple juice keeping my deer burgers from drying out just thought it might be something u hadn't tried and u might like it...sorry!     Very cute but inefficient. I would perfer something like a Lodge mini Kamado with trible inslulated cast iron with air gap to retain the head and ways to cut off all airflow so you can reuse the coals.

    Helpful tip, wrap in foil for the first few mins so as not to dry that steak out then sear. Or, you can do what's called a reverse sear, sear it on the outside then bake in an oven until you reach your desired doneness and serve right away.

      Mark Atkinson my marinade also uses olive oil, the meat doesn’t dry out if treated right.

    Sorry boss, I do not like this Grill. Lodge makes fantastic cast iron skillets that have lasted me for 20 some odd years. Love Lodge for that. But this thing is non-adjustable and easy to flare up. I prefer the traditional double grate hibachi that is adjustable up and down to control the heat.

      Agreed: poorly, primitively designed. Does not work in wind or cold. Scorches the outside, raw in the middle, don't try kabobs. Goes thru a lot of charcoal per meal because you need it to get any heat up top. Lower the grate and burn the everloving out of everything. I had one and sold it after one weekend of failure after failure camping. The Weber Go-Anywhere charcoal (not gas!!) BBQ is the best for small jobs, half the weight, same price.

      Agreed. To me a charcoal bbq needs a lid and vents to take control of the heat: how much, and where. Get a Weber Go Anywhere charcoal, or a little 14" kettle portable. Way more versatile, better cookers.
