for those who dont know the Song is about The story of the Chasseurs Ardennais, whose emblem is the wild boar. A small Belgian unit of soldiers who were supposed to defend the borders and hold their ground along the K-W Line in May 1940. When the German armies, which included Rommel’s Ghost Division, approached the unit, they were supposed to retreat but due to communication failure the order never reached them. Instead they honoured their original orders, which were to defend the border at all cost. They fought so bravely and on such a large front, that they tricked the axis into believing that they were facing a force much larger than 40 rifles strong. When finally they were captured and their captors asked them -”where are the others?” they simply laughed and answered. -”There are no others, we are all!”.
The song gets its title from their motto Resiste Et Mords, in English, Resist and Bite.
Thanks :)
I know this and i'm proud to be a Belgian
Thanks for that.
Did the germans executed them or they survived the war as war prisoners?
That’s awesome . Thanks for sharing .
For those interested in the full story behind this song:
At the Belgian Ardennes border, Rommel had chosen a little valley with a single bridge as a crossing point for the entire panzer push. Guarding it was a single company of infantry, the "chasseurs d'ardennes" (ardennes hunters) of about 60 men. This might sounds ridiculous, but at this point in time hope was still that Germany would back off OR attack at the much more fortified positions at the meuze. Nobody really expected them to come trough the ardennes (as the french will confirm..)
Their orders were to delay any Germans crossing the bridge until other forces could be redeployed. Needless to say, nobody took an entire panzer regiment into account. When Germans scouts on motorcycles crossed the bridge, everybody was so surprised they just let them ride on untill they even rode right by the company HQ. Seeing Germans passing by, the company commander falsly believed their position had already been overrun and he fled. Severed from all communications, the 60 or so chasseurs engaged the incomming Regiment and actually held them up for 2 hours fighting and another 2 when Rommel halted the advance, refusing to believe the then captured soldiers who said their were only 60 Belgians (-KIA's) present. Because who would be so stupid to engage a regiment with a company? It had to be an ambush of some sort....it wasn't
So in total they held up the German crossing for 4 hours, simply because they didn't recieve an order to retreat.
Last fun fact: In Belgian army officer training, this scenario is still played as a wargame excercise on the exact same location. Nobody in our training ever came close to a realistic 4 hour delay.
Wow thank you for clearing lyrics up wow
They held off 18 days bro

Imagine the look on the German officer's face when after fighting for close to 3 weeks with his army making little to no progress you finally take the enemy position, expecting it to be littered with enemy dead and wonded as you get ready to detain the survivors. Instead all you find are 40 men who laugh at you when you ask about the rest of their unit, because there is no rest of the unit.
"Where are your allies?! Your artillery? Your heavy weapons? Are you it?"
"Sorry to disappoint you mate..."
"We made you waste bullets and other valuable resources!"
GhostBear3067 It was actually like 2,400 men
Rommel wasn't a Nazi. He was merely forced to work for them.
No he didn't. The man wasn't party to any war crimes. He was a military officer doing normal military officer things. Commanding his troops in war time, just as he did during the first world war. And because he was falsely accused during a coup attempt, he was forced to kill himself by the Nazis, or they would kill his entire family. Maybe try learning some history?

- Erwin Rommel.
At the time of writing this he didn't know though, he didn't know that what he faced was not 200 men but 40.
Erwin Rommel wasn't at Bodange, but at Chabrehez, another stronghold of the Chasseurs ardennais. But I don't know if they were also 40

@@Wildanc2227 Erwin DID however command the entire force pushing said 40 at large.

@@justsomeguy7921 Indeed. This is why I think that the Germans really weren't as prepared as they thought. I mean. They almost got fucking wrecked by the Polish. *THE POLISH NEARLY WON AGAINST GERMANY*
To be honest, if the allies HAD taken action when Poland was being invaded, Germany would have never made it to Warsaw.
The "German Warmachine" only became as powerful as we know it after conquering France. It is was probably at its peak in the beginning of operation Barbarossa.
Anyways, I'm getting side tracked.
In my opinion, the Belgians often get overlooked as a regional power in Europe. Let's be honest, Belgium isn't going to be winning offensive wars against most of its neighbours. But invading Belgium is nearly suicidal if you don't have a strong navy to do so. And I doubt you're going to be overpowering the British Navy whom are allied to Belgium. Long story short. ❤ from Poland , brother!
After doing a bit of studying on the meaning behind this song (I'd heard talk of the heroism of Belgium's armed forces) this just proves that size means shit.
For those unfamiliar with the meaning behind this song, it is a nod of respect to the Chasseurs Ardennais. Their emblem is a Wild boar ("The boar against the eagle" obviously referencing the eagle seen in German insignia/icons vs the Belgian boar). While other units in the region were told to retreat, the Chasseur Ardennais never received word to fall back. As such, they dug in and fought back against one of the most powerful armed forces the world had ever seen up to that point. 40 men versus armored cars, tanks and overwhelming infantry. Considering how ferocious their defense had been, the Germans had believed the defensive forces were far greater in number.
When German forces finally overwhelmed the Belgian defenders, they were (understandably) shocked to find so few men holding the line, they asked "Where are the rest of your men?", the Chasseurs laughed and told them flat out "There are no others- we are all!".
Edit: Resist and Bite was the Chasseurs Ardennais motto/battlecry. When the pin of the Boar shows up ( 2:15 approximately) You can see the cry ("Resiste Et Mords") engraved in their pin.
Thanks for explaining it

It wasn't until hearing this song and doing research that I learned that the German forces were held up in any substantial way in their initial attack. To know now that such brave men fought and died to hold back the Germans is incredible, and it makes me wonder if the so-called miracle at Dunkirk would have been possible without the resistance met in the Ardennes and without that if the island of Great Britain would have lasted as long as it did. He allowed the Vikings to form a shield wall, though they were defeated that day, that Viking's memory will last and I am sure he will fight and drink alongside the gods In Valhalla until Ragnarok as a true Einherjar warrior.

WE WERE TOLD TO HOLD THE BORDER AND THAT IS WHAT WE DID! such a powerful line
HONORED WERE OUR ORDERS IN THE SPITE OF OUR FOE
Makes me proud to be a Belgian. Caeser's words shown it's trought by this deed.
allies fought good and their men were Gloria Fortis Miles men
Poland was taken but resisted, Belgium resisted too, the Greeks resisted, Finland resisted. None are better at resisting the enemy
France gave up right away
@@brucejedilee5290 but still lasted longer than belgium
@@offer202 They barely did any fighting, they didn't even attempt to resist. The people resisted but the goverment and military gave in almost instantly
@@brucejedilee5290 Some of the goverment, and the "barely did any fighting" my history books (danish) say something else.
@@offer202 just because France is larger and the Germans took a day off in Paris.
Really fits when playing Hearts of Iron 4.
Especially when playing as Belgium. :D
CJF4 Yup.
Also on Heroes and Generals :D
And Red orchestra 2
And Verdun
When a shark introduced me to this song you know it will be legendary
the shark against the tacos :))
Small contribution (maybe unnecessary):
-"Gloria Fortis Miles" in Latin means "The glory of a brave soldier"
-"Adversor et admorsus" in Latin means "Resist and Bite"
PS: Such an EPIC official video, Nuclear Blast Records! :)
Diego Cobo Sánchez Resiste Et Mords is resist and bite.
Correct, that's the motto of the Chasseurs Ardennais and it's written in French because it's the principal language of Wallonia, the Belgian region where these exceptional soldiers are based. ;)
Uuuh... "admorsus" isn't a verb, it's a noun... if you consider it a verb, it would translate as an adjective : "bitten". I wonder if the sentence is actually correct. What are your sources for the translation ? I really want to know if they fucked up or not
Scar Lett. There is still a noun of bite. Like when you say zombie bite.
Yes, but it wouldn't make any sense if it was the noun. "resist and the bite" ? (plus, wouldn't "morsus" make more sense ?). English and Latin don't work the same way, the noun and the verb might be the same in english but it's different in latin
Merci Sabaton de rendre hommage à nos valeureux et héroïques chasseurs ardenais.
"They are not men, they are green wolves." - Erwin Rommel
As Ukrainian I can say that this fits what is happening perfectly.
We will resist and bite.

Love from Poland, give them hell brothers!
Glory to Ukraine! From georgian! Everyday non stop we are trying what we can to support you as hard as we can. Sorry to our coward goverment. They will be gone soon as the russian soldiers will be gone or dead in ukraine
Good luck boys. Our government isn’t standing with you but the American people are 🇺🇸🇺🇦

I also find this bit sooo good, kind of addictive.
A rare moment of nationalist pride for me as a Belgian! The deepest respect for these heroes!

Battle of Snake Island song, when?
I know I’m 2 months late to this comment, but all of the soldiers on snake island actually surrendered peacefully instead of being killed.
@@ecksdee1248 Yeah, so it has come out. At the time I commented we believed they'd all be blown away. Still! Now we can/have houred those brave bastards and get to give them free beers.

Im proud I can be Czech, Sabaton always reminds me of Karel Janoušek and R.A.F.
+Patrik Nedorostek 2:43 I see a Czech flag on the planes, also the song a bit reminds me of what if Czechoslovakia fought against Germany.
Every single time !! That imagery "boar against the eagle. Or orders were honored despite our foes"..... So much bravery and badasses !!!!
This is without a doubt my favorite song Sabaton has released, there’s such an inspiring feeling to it, whenever I feel something discouraging me I usually tell myself to “resist and bite” and it perks me right up with renewed vigor.
Dedicated to the Heroes of Mariupol.
And now of Severodonetsk
I have no idea how the fuck those mad bastards are still holding.

Nope it’s dedicated to the Heroes who defended Belgium against nazi Germany

Andy Su me definitely
Hmm while I got my 38 (t) and you got a tiger, what division
2:05 Chills everytime
"RuskiBear"... Ok... It's happening i guess
This is probably my favorite Sabaton song. Perfect for lifting, running, shooting, dying on a hill. It's like a Swiss Army song.
Sabaton is possibly the only band that can get me hyped about every country they sing about
Of course
funny thing is the chasseur ardennais's resisting the german army scenario is still included in the training at the same location and as far as i know nobody has ever held the "enemy" bussy equally long as those original 40 men
I don't know what it is about people, but some have a fire in them. A fire that burns so brightly that it doesn't waver even in the face of insurmountable odds. These are the people who become heroes, and then there are those who are strong, who waver, but do not buckle, they become legends.
When *THEY* got *WAFFEN* but *YOU* got *WAFFLEN*
Haha
Ah, the song that introduced me to Sabaton.
Same here actually.

I know is difficult to understand nowadays, but some soldiers prefer glory and honour.
Yes, but for all they knew, several units just like theirs were holding out at the same time. Had every Belgian unit performed so admirably, Dunkirk's evacuation would have been a lazy, easy affair rather than the rushed, desperate one it ended up being.
Javier Pascual Sarrazin the survivors are the winners. If you die, you do not win.
Lich King It's not a matter of winning or losing.
Yes it is. There is no point in fighting a lost battle. Better to retreat, recover, fight another day.
I wish history teachers could just play through all of the Sabaton albums for classes about the wars
