========= To Hell And Back LYRICS ==========
A short man from Texas
A man of the wild
Thrown into combat
Where bodies lie piled
Hides his emotions
His blood’s running cold
Just like his victories,
His story unfolds
Bright
A white light
If there’d be
Any glory in war
Let it rest
On men like him
Dead men will never come back
Crosses grow on Anzio
Where no soldiers sleep
And where hell’s six feet deep
That death does wait
There’s no debate
So charge and attack
Going to Hell and Back
A man of the 15th
A man of Can Do
Friends fall around him
And yet he came through
Let them fall face down
If they must die
Making it easier
To say goodbye
Bright
A white light
If there’d be,
Any glory in war
Let it rest
On men like him
Who went to Hell and came back
Crosses grow on Anzio
Where no soldiers sleep
And where hell is six feet deep
That death does wait
There’s no debate
So charge and attack
Going to Hell and Back
Oh gather round me
And listen while I speak
Of a war
Where Hell is six feet deep
And all along the shore
Where cannons still roar
They’re haunting my dreams
They’re still there when I sleep
Crosses grow on Anzio
Where no soldiers sleep
and where hell is six feet deep
That death does wait
There’s no debate
So charge and attack
Going to Hell and Back

theres a movie where he even played himself its called to hell and back
Audie Murphy's mom probably: dont worry son, no one will remember you were short when you become a historical figure
A first line in a song about him: "A short man from Texas"
OOF
He fought in the battle of off-brand Anzio, a way of saying he was not in the actual battle of Via Anziata. But near enough and close enough in time to be included.
@@diamentus3774 rip
Actually starred in a war movie where he played a coward. Murphy, a coward? Right.....
I just discovered that some of the lyrics of the song are quotes from Poems that Audie Murphy wrote. Sabaton always amazes me with its attention to detail and love for history.
yeah they do so much research
Fr
Which ones?
@@projam7534 The bridge and most of the chorus are taken directly from one of Murphy's poems, "The Crosses Grow On Anzio".
'Oh, gather 'round me, comrades, Oh, gather 'round me
And listen while I weep And listen while I speak
Of a war, a war, a war... Of a war
Where Hell is six feet deep' Where Hell is six feet deep
'Along the shore, the cannons roar And all along the shore, the cannons still roar;
Oh how can a soldier sleep? They're haunting my dreams, they're still there when I sleep (this is more about his PTSD, but cannons hindering sleep, so it counts)
The going's slow on Anzio
And Hell is six feet deep.'
There's a third stanza, nothing directly from there in the song, though...
'That death does wait
There's no debate; (beginning of second part of chorus)
No triumph will we reap.
The crosses grow on Anzio,
Where Hell is six feet deep.' Crosses grow on Anzio, where no soldiers sleep and where Hell's six feet deep
Joakim is known for shooting people who get their facts wrong
The brillant thing about this song is that Sabaton didn't need to sing about him this way:
Audie Murphy near singlehandedly held off 6 German panzers and hundreds of German troops, with nothing but a heavy machine gun and limited artillery support. They could have easily written about his feats in battle but they chose to sing about his PTSD and how he dealt with it.
This very song is proof that Sabaton doesn't glorify war, but honours the men who fight them. Real respect right here.
its amazing how he had to face the horrors of war
Audie was interviewed extensively about his exploits, several of which were deemed too outrageous for his movie, aptly titled “Hell and Back.” In one instance, he was speaking on radio with his superior officers and they asked him how close the enemy soldiers were. He responded that if they waited a minute, they could ask the soldiers themselves. At another point, he stood atop a tank ablaze, still firing upon enemy troops. When asked about it, he said that the weather had been particularly brutal and it was the first time his feet had been warm that winter.
@@abcdefghij337 IIRC, the interaction was between him and the artillery men he was ordering strikes from
At one point they asked “How close are they”
To which Murphy replied “Hold the phone, I’ll let you talk to one of the bastards”
If i remember well, in an interview of why he wiped them all out with his machine gun, he replied "they were killing my friend"
I agree with you on that one. Technically speaking, Sabaton did bring up the things Audie did in battle if you look at the title of the song. To go through a long, hard battle, emerge on the other with PTSD, and you're still willing to speak about you problems are the makings of a true soldier. And as the title says, Audie Murphy went "To Hell And Back".
My great grandfather fought in ww2 in the army, Stormed the beaches of Normandy and fought in the battle of the bulge in the freezing conditions and he was one of two men in a group that survived after another soldier accidentally dropped a landmine that they were loading into a truck which caused it to go off and the blast knocked my great grandfather and his friend back against an old wooden house and knocked him unconscious and was sent to a hospital off the front where he was treated for his wounds. He returned home with shrapnel still in his body. He lived to be 101 years old.
He received the Purple Heart
❤💜❤
💜 ❤️💜
Sabaton should make a song about him
My great grandfather got a Purple Heart and one bronze star.

Thank you guys for talking about PTSD, this illness kills and destroy too many veterans and soldiers around the world, but it seems that most of the time Governments don't care about it.
@@gitasumarni1760 No thanks.
@@ThyLLiS- it's a spam bot

Well, governments shouldn't care if they were attacked. In case if they attacked someone they SHOULD not let any information about losses leak or else all of their country will hate them. And yet even if citizens don't know about the losses there will be a lot of people that unhappy about the war itself. And we still didn't say about other governments. If this is a nuclear country like France, India there's always sanctions. And if it isn't there's a chance that others countries will invade the aggressor. So the statement about "governments don't care about wars" is wrong.
surviving war is both about getting your body out of it in one piece...but also to salvage the mind afterwards so it not fractures or resorts with maddens as last ditch efforts to escape memories or knowledge about just how unbridled the rage of industrial never ending war can be :/
makes you think twice how much trouble vets in develop nations with extensive social safty have to process war zone experiences.... what it might do to minds and comunities in none developed or long term civil war plagued regions i guess..
I read an article from 2013. The Murphy family was worried that future generations would forget the deeds of Audie Murphy. 2014 a metal band not from USA but from Sweden put him back into the light with this song. God it’s insane to think that sabaton included lines from Audie’s poetry in this song….it just hits harder even when you find out he suffered from extreme ptsd….
That was the best part of reading the book was seeing his poetry that I recognized from this sing
It's not hard when the poetry hits so hard.
This song was written about a soldier by the name of Audie Murphy. The most decorated soldier of WWII. He was from the state of Texas. After the war he became an actor. He was deemed too short and was denied service more than once. But man what a warrior.
A real life Captain America. If it weren't for the fact that the comic character was invented before Audie went to war, I'd almost say that Marvel Comics owes his estate a lot of money.
@@Thomas.Wright yeah he was definitely a real-life Captain America.
It's not about the size of the dog in the fight, it's about the size of the fight in the dog.
He was also way funnier than Captain America.
At one point during a recounting of his experiences, Audie said that he climbed up onto a burning tank to shoot. He was asked if he was scared to do it. Audie replied that standing on that tank on fire was the first time his feet had been warm that winter.
Would love to read an account of Steve Rogers meeting Lt. Murphy in Italy. Only Steve salutes him.

The first Sabaton song I heard was their cover of Metallica's For Whom The Bell Tolls. Been a fan of them ever.since.

My first song was Resist and Bite. After seeing a video on the history of the "Chasseurs Ardennais", I found a comment where the autor spoke about the Sabaton's song. 👌
That whistle on its own is so innocuous and almost inspiring, but when its combined with the guitar and especially the visuals form the original music video its so haunting.... This song does an amazing job of dealing with PTSD and 1:46 has to be one of my favorite parts, it also serves as a reminder that we sometimes place too much emphasis on those who die and not those who came back and dealt with a fate that was worse then death.....
Respect to Audie Murphy, I love the whistle at the start and end, crazy that he was the most decorated soldier from WW2, also PTSD is very real so seeing kids on Tiktok saying that they have PTSD because they tripped over a seashell at the beach once really annoys me, because my great grandfather (who died in like 2016) served in WW2, not on in D-Day or Dragoon but he served in WW2 and that's what matters.
Huge respect to your grandfather, being in a war can completely destroy someone, hope he is okay (if he is still with you)
@@regalblade8171 unfortunately he is no longer with us, but you are very correct, being in a war over his homeland (he was Polish) must have felt not only liberating but also very depressing, war is a terrible place, and nobody should have to be thrown into it.

I love the fact that this guy played himself in a movie, called to hell and back in fact, so somewhere in the credits would be, Audie Murphy played by Audie Murphy.
For a guy who was rejected four times before he was accepted I have always wondered if everything he managed was simply to spite those who rejected him or if he would have had the same result if they took him the first time he tried to enlist .

My grandad survived the death railway in Burma he was Japanese pow and so lucky. He lived to be 102 I'll always be grateful for the sacrifice of the soldiers of ww2. We can't comprehend what they went through to defend our countries from tyranny
❤
I completly forgot about to hell and back but great to hear it again
Please read the book, its utterly fantastic
I’m half Emarati and Iraq but I’ve lived in sweden for a bunch of years and I never knew swedish bands were THIS good Sabaton,Ghost,Europe,Etc. I’m glad that this band is swedish honestly.
Jesteście zajebiści w tym , co robocie ! 👍🏻💪🏻 dzięki Panowie . To taka nowa nauka historii , dla młodych. Niech wiedzą , choć od Was jak było i co my przeżywaliśmy 😔 pozdrawiam z Polski
Sabaton making sure their new fans finds out about all these amazing older songs! Awesome!
THIS IS SOME OF THE BEST ROCK MUSIC I HAVE EVER HEARD.
I love that the silhouette of Murphy in the video looks like it could be wearing a cowboy hat or a helmet. And of course there's the bandolier of bullets. He was a real life cowboy, a man of the wild!
Plus after the war, he became an actor and played primarily in Western.
Audie Murphy was the first soldier in recent history to teach us that, just becaude you got PTSD, doesn't mean you can't also be the traumatic event at the same time.
Still don't regret coming across your music, the best of rock and military history, I can learn more from one of your songs than I could a whole week of Social Studies, thanks for the amazing music and pumping it out at an amazing rate!
Words just cannot describe how gorgeous this is. It wasn’t the first I listened to (I don’t remember which one it was, but it was either Red Baron or Bismarck), but it’s definitely one of my favorites. Absolutely beautiful.
This is still one of the greatest works Sabaton has made, for the story it tells, but also the diversity of the instruments that just work.
One of the best bands on the world at the moment... Love Sweden for giving us so much great metal bands as hammerfall and sabaton. Thx Sabaton for pick and great concert in opatija. Was crazy front row... BRAVO. Keep up the good work.
Thank you very much for coming!
Am i the only one that can listen to this for endless hours? This fireee! 🔥🔥🔥
literally one of the best songs in the universe
Was a fan of this song, learned about Audie Murphy, now an even bigger fan of this song.
People- "You can't mix metal with western-style music!"
Joakim- "Hold my beer!"
Sabbaton holds the curious position of being the only rock band that I know of that makes songs that bring me to the verge of tears with emotion.
Go to Warsaw 12/09 and watch them livem. Winged Hussars and alot of other Polish soldier do an event about those battles. I have seen it like 20 years ago... It was one of the best experiences in my life.
certified badass i have no idea why his story isn't told more songs like sabaton makes are the best they remind of us of are heros through amazing songs
Uwielbiam tę piosenkę. Dowiedziałam się dzięki niej o niezwykłym amerykańskim bohaterze. A w ogóle to Sabaton jest dla mnie świetnym nauczycielem historii. Najlepszym, jakiego miałam!
The” bright “ bar is just something else man
And to think, two other branches rufesd him because he was "too small"... He was exactly where he needed to be exactly when he needed to be. Not one in a hundred-thousand would have had the presence of mind to do what he did, let alone the courage.
this song reminds me of my grampy who had to lie under dead bodies for 3 day during ww2 so he wouldnt be killed.the deamon he brought home with him i can only imagine. the poor man never found his way out of the bottle and ill always miss but i hope found peace. love you grampy rip!!!!!
To hell and back, one of my favs! Lyrics so deep showing the effects of PTSD on the soul...!
Hell was right there.
And hell can be born at anytime and anywhere.
Sabaton had taught me that.
I am grateful for it and love this music.
Fun fact. This song stands like an alarm clock for me. To make it easier to get up to school)
It's amazing how many medal of honor winners have not survived trying to get sober and deal with trauma at the same time in hotel rooms.
it makes you feel patriotic for a foreign country, amazing.
Where you from
@@zanenevada7327 i am live in Russia
@@EinOffizier oh no, brother. I told you to pick America as your spawn point. Ya done goofed.
@@alastor8091 hahaha, yea Russia its trash, but at least we don’t have multi-colored freaks marching;)
@@EinOffizier Damn you destroyed him.
This is the song that drove my already heavy support for Veterans of War through the roof, PTSD is a very real thing and can be very Devastating, Audie Murphy is a great example of a man who persevered through both Wartime and the Post-war era, he actively spoke out about PTSD and its effects on him in hopes of getting help for others like him, may one of America’s greatest heroes rest in peace knowing that he has done his duty.
There is no better music to listen to while in a combative game or in war in general. Another great one!

They are one of the best concerts, you can not go but just seeing them from the screen, I know it was surprising
💗❤️💌💘

I'm not sure this is a good song for war. It's a dismal song, that the enemy and friendly fire slaughter soldiers, or civilians, as if they were animals. War is a terrible thing and hurts everyone.
@@merryrose6788 this is a song about solider Audie Murphy and it captures him quite good and his time in war, but not as good as the books and the documentaries
I listen while playing Risk of Rain 2.
This makes me feel like I'm on a horse in the wild west high as a kite but always excited for every adventurous thing.
