If you haven't, read Gates of Fire. It's a novel about the 300 fighting in Thermopylae. It really puts into perspective how brutal Spartan training is, honing not just the body but the mind for all manner of hardships. It's often considered mandatory reading for anyone joining the army because it stresses how every man and woman of Sparta so valued their freedom and country that they would rather die than submit to another nation. Despite their reputation, Spartans truly loved their nation and each other, which is why they willingly fought to the last man.
Some American soldiers and Marines like going to the Middle East as opposed to staying in the US to train because it doesn't rain or get cold there. Watch "Why Veterans aren't afraid of ISIS" by Angry cops. I've also heard Marines say they'd rather go on another deployment to Iraq than go through boot camp again.
roadhouse699 yea that’s true but cmon. The Spartans killed their own babies that were weak and went to boot camp at 7. Doesn’t get much tougher than that
Guys I am from Greece And I know some things about this fight. Even if Spartans knew that they were going to die that day the stayed and fought until no one of them was still alive. Spartans were one of the best in the Persia's War they stayed and fight a lot more soldiers than them and it was really heroic. They may not manage to win but they will always be remembered by people of older and younger genies. Ephialtes doesn't worth to be called as Hellenic or Spartan. Spartans created a strategy that would cyrcle Persians and hit them from everywhere but Ephialtes, a local disabled person knew the secret passages of the area and drove Perses on the Greeks/Spartans back. That's how Greeks/Spartans plan was destroyed. That's why the singers say that Know his name Know his shame Will last forever. you will all wonder why he did that. Its simple. Because of his disability he wasn't allowed to join the army and other politic things that made him angry and feel a about Greeks/Spartans. That's why he did what he did. After the war Spartans like the song says. One more things. Persia's king went in Leonidas and told him that he wouldn't kill any one of them if they gave the city to him. Leonidas a fantastic answer to him. It was in greek language and that was the thing that made Persian's angry.
If he’d been disabled from birth he would’ve been abandoned and left to die. If something happened as an adult he would’ve been used as an example of what not to do, his rank decided what he could do with politics. I doubt anyone truly wonders why he did it, we know there are simply people without honor. They may have died but no one ever forgets the underdog.

All we know the 300 Spartans, who had law to not return and die in battle if they didn't win, so it was duty their death and they hadn't any other choice, finally, but no one knows the 700 Thespians who sacrified only because they wanted... I'm glad that Sabaton wrote notice that "Spartans were certainly not alone"... Greetings from Hellas! See you in March in Athens!

In total the number at Thermopylae was around 4,000, Herodotus and Plutarch have different numbers for that, but it's believed to have been 4,000 led by Leonidas with Demophilus. When the Greeks were betrayed by Ephialtes, leonidas ordered the helot troops that he brought with him and other forces to leave. Demophilus stayed with his troops along with 100s of others, even some helots stayed. The goal Leonidas was to keep a small yet strong contingent at Thermopylae to fight so he could give the Greek troops time to escape. He didn't want all the men to perish. The main thing also is that, it never had been written in recorded history as to whether or not they actually always fought to the death, but we can confirm that at Thermopylae they surely did. You should totally check out the song 40:1 by them. They talk about a battle between German and polish troops during the beginning phases of the German invasion of Poland, in the battle the polish had 1,000 men going against the 40,000 German troops. It's a pretty awesome song!
Of course there was a law saying you will either come as a winner or dead. Search the phrase "Ή τάν ή επί τάς". You should better know that. Although Leonidas asked the remaining men to stay with him, he made clear that everyone else who didn't want to fight by his side was free to go. *BUT* ! Those who return from a battle defeated and not dead are being judged by the Spartan society really hard for their cowardliness.
as far as I know there were 2 Spartan survivors (I think both were due to injury with one literally having both his eyes blinded ) and they were shamed until the battle of Platea where they redeemed themselves

Chris Porter That's why Darius wanted the revenge? Well , about Anatolia , Lydians under Croesus started the war against Cyrus the great. Cyrus also warned the Ionians not to help Croesus. but I don't think persian invasion was even a thing compare to Greek , Roman and Colonial empires that destroyed , genocided , massacred the whole world and vanished many cultures and forced their own culture and language.
Chris Porter You conclude what you want from my words. for herodotus , the description of the revolt is intimately linked to a wider historiographic objevtive : to explain the origins of the war between persians and the greeks. And in his mind it is clear that the ionians , for whom he did not harbor the least sympathy , played a despicable role : their revolt brought on devastation.(V.28).The burning of sardis offered the persians a pretext for launching a war of reprisals against Eretria and Athens(V.102), and the sending of Athenian and Eretrian reinforcements "was the beginning of trouble not only for greece, but for the rest of the world as well" (V.97). Aristagoras is presented as a crazy man, guided at first by the fear of losing power at Miletus and ready to involve the Greeks in a hopeless revolt (V.35) : when he urged the exiled paeonians in Asia to recapture their countries, it was not to achieve any advantage fore the ionians , it was simply "to annoy Darius"(V.98). Herodotus also satets(not unmaliciously) that Aristagoras himself did not take part in the raid on sardis(V.99). And finally, unable to follow through to the end the operations he had initiated, this "poor- spirited creature left Asia minor for Thrace (V.124-126). History of the persian empire , Pierre briant , p149 You reversed my explanation. I wanted to say that you are always trying to demonize the East whereas your history is filled with blood even more than others. great progress and development of Western Civilization give them an excuse to cover what they did and are doing. in the battle of thermopiles there were also 3000 other peloponisians and 3000 soldiers from around the greece and 900 perikioi(people who live near sparta) the thing that the 300 spartans did was stand their ground and not reatret once they were surrounded along with the 700 thespians(who also fought to the death but noone remembers them) glory to the thespians as well they deserve it

Nikmat Zulesham in the beginning yes, but when the Persian got informed about the path and the Greeks understood, most of the army retreated to live and fight in the battles to come and not die for sure pointlessly surrounded. The Spartans couldn't leave however since their tradition prohibited them from doing so. And the Thespeans stayed along to help them stall the Persians and also died heroically
I tried introducing Sabaton to a few I was sure would like them. They didn't seem to care for them. How can you not love the epic-ness that is Sabaton? Some men are just weak. Despite their reputation, Spartans truly loved their nation and each other, which is why they willingly fought to the last man.
fun fact: Spartan training was so intense that actual war seemed child's play to them
Some American soldiers and Marines like going to the Middle East as opposed to staying in the US to train because it doesn't rain or get cold there.

"joined by their brothers, a few against the fateful hordes" damn, that is some good song writing.
That's why the singers say that
Know his name
Know his shame
Will last forever.
you will all wonder why he did that.

As Sabaton noticed in album's booklet, there were 700 Thespians who died in Thermopyles, without took any glory for their sacrifice.

Ταξιάρχης Δανέλης
"Form a wall, live to fall and live forever" best line I personally find interesting. Indeed the 300 Spartans did that
Fun fact: The name Ephialtes nowdays means "nightmare". When you sleep and you see a nightmare, you will say "I saw an Ephialte"
Well, technically he did live forever...
Know his name, know his shame, will live forever.

That's why Darius wanted the revenge?
Well , about Anatolia , Lydians under Croesus started the war against Cyrus the great. Cyrus also warned the Ionians not to help Croesus.
but I don't think persian invasion was even a thing compare to Greek , Roman and Colonial empires that destroyed , genocided , massacred the whole world and vanished many cultures and forced their own culture and language.
Chris Porter
You conclude what you want from my words.
for herodotus , the description of the revolt is intimately linked to a wider historiographic objevtive : to explain the origins of the war between persians and the greeks.
History of the persian empire , Pierre briant , p149
You reversed my explanation. I wanted to say that you are always trying to demonize the East whereas your history is filled with blood even more than others.
great progress and development of Western Civilization give them an excuse to cover what they did and are doing.
Didn't you think for a second that maybe Migration to west is resulf of Making terrorism and governments , selling equipments and weapons to every side for fighting each other and destroying their economy and country that takes a century only for returning to their first condition , spreading diseases , penetrating to countries changing their values and made them stupid tool working for their Highly developed master?

Nikmat Zulesham in the beginning yes, but when the Persian got informed about the path and the Greeks understood, most of the army retreated to live and fight in the battles to come and not die for sure pointlessly surrounded. The Spartans couldn't leave however since their tradition prohibited them from doing so. And the Thespeans stayed along to help them stall the Persians and also died heroically
ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ FROM CYPRUS !
I tried introducing Sabaton to a few I was sure would like them. They didn't seem to care for them.
How can you not love the epic-ness that is Sabaton?
Some men are just weak.
If I have to go into battle. Just give some ear buds with any random Sabaton track playing in them. I'll either be victorious, or die gloriously. I know I won't be stumbling around looking for my own arm.
Preach, brother, them plebs know nothing.
@@fructosecornsyrup5759 Don't insult others for liking the same as you, instead take pride that you have your own uniqueness, maybe one day there will be someone who enjoys it and then you can share in it.

Philip II of Macedon once said to sparta, “If I invade Lakonia you will be destroyed, never to rise again.” The Spartans sent a piece of parchment back with two letters scrawled on the back: "IF"
And then Philip II beat up the Spartans and conquered several cities from them. The Spartans rep is much better than their actual battlefield performance.
