Omg finally someone who knows the proper way to paint a peony in watercolor on RUclips. There are many many videos on this and no one that I watched until now either did a full tutorial explaining the process or they were drawing the flower with their brush with a result that didn't look even a little real or they were doing one in super speed up mode explaining nothing or they were in another medium. I'll bet I've been trying to find a good peony tutorial for 2 weeks. Thank you.
I like the way you paint the prony flower and you explain so well.i watched other tutorials but could not understand that well.but your explaining skills are exceptional. Thanks Karen.
Just a medium beginner and you do flowers beautifully! Done carnations but still working on peonies and so many different color values in one flower! Using three colors helps! Ty!!
Excellent tutorial on the techniques used and the expected outcome when using them. Seeing the technique you use as you paint the peony really anchors its value.
Hello, Karen. While I'm a little late discovering this video, please know that I love the teaching and the results. Thank you so much for sharing your talent with aspiring artists of the world.
This is beautiful. A real favourite and I will give your techniques a try when I paint one for my sister. I love there is a little detail and that it’s a hint at all y the detail in the petals.
My gosh this is absolutely beautiful. Thank you for sharing this tutorial. Just what I was looking for. Painting peonies is my goal flower and thanks to you, im able to learn.
This is fabulous Karen and perfect for our sketchbook challenge! I love the way it came to life - you should be very proud of your videos 👏 these days. I m growing to really quite like this paper after a rocky start - as you have done here, a section at a time and no more than a couple of layers it’s fine. A beautiful flower and I am sure I’ll do a big one at some point, too 😁👌👩🎨
This is absolutely gorgeous! This kind of detail is not really my style and I likely would not paint it but for the sketchbook challenge. So we shall see!
Beautiful painting, thank you, Karen! I would like to see a tutorial on drawing the sketch. How, where do you start drawing such a complicated form, how you build up the flower... Could you show us this process please? ♥
This might sound silly but do you erase the pencil markings afterward? I never tried sketching an object first before painting and that sounds so much easier than totally painting from scratch!
That's gorgeous Karen, 😍 I have pink peonies in the garden, when they bloom in the summer they are the size of tea plates and the fragrance in just amazing (roll on summer lol) Great tutorial, thank you 😊
Wow. Just….wow. I recently tried 2 peonies -the 2nd a little bit better than the first but I managed to sacrifice their delicate nature. Now, with your video, I’ve got a few much needed key pieces of technique information and am motivated to go for peony number 3! Thanks so much!!
I CAN’T THANK YOU ENOUGH FOR THIS VIDEO.I WAS LOOKING FOR 3 MONTHS FOR A PEONEY WITH A LOT OF FLOWER PETALS. I HAVE A HOUSE COAT WITH BEAUTIFUL PETAL -LAYERED PEONIES BUT I COULDN’T READ THEM. THIS BLACKAND WHITE IS PERFECT AS ARE THE INSTRUCTIOINS.
I have finally been able to paint my own using this tutorial. It's been so hard to understand how to do this without being super realistic. Thank you! I may join your patreon! Love your style!
Thank you so much for doing this peony rose 🌹 one of my favourite flowers. I’m really loving this sketchbook challenge. Have you ever painted a kangaroo paw , I ask because I live in Western Australia and we have an abundance of very unusual wildflowers. My journal finally arrived yesterday so now I can start the challenge, many thanks 🙏💖💗
Hi Karen- quick question for you- I used Windsor Newton Professional Series Opera Rose, Danial Smith Ultramarine and Daniel Smith Hansa Yellow. Since the Opera Rose is so fugitive and I would like to give this to my mother-in-law as a gift, if I frame it behind museum glass and tell her to hang it out of direct light do you think that would be alright? If you would have any hesitation in doing this with one of your own works, please let me know- I’m happy to make it into a print instead. I’ve never framed anything with a fugitive paint before and would love your opinion. Thank you💗
I see you use Pixabay photos quite a bit. They are all lovely. If I understand the site correctly, you are able to use the photos for whatever creative project you want without worrying about infringement on copyright laws. Am I reading this right? Thank you. Loved the peony painting!

Thanks so much Chris. The paper does take getting used to. I am enjoying painting in it. I hope you get a chance to paint this peony soon ☺️
Phew just finished this. Isn't it difficult getting soft edges? A work in progress for me I think! Thank you Karen for this tutorial.
I hanks so much. Yes it does take a little patience to get soft edges. So pleased you painted this 😀
This is absolutely gorgeous! This kind of detail is not really my style and I likely would not paint it but for the sketchbook challenge. So we shall see!
I hope you get a chance to paint it. I really loved painting this one 😊
@@KarenRiceArt I painted it this afternoon and loved doing it! I'm happy with the outcome!
Thank you Karen for breaking this down for us. I have always wanted to paint a Peony but have never been able to get it right. Love your videos.
Thank you Cindy 😀
Beautiful painting, thank you, Karen! I would like to see a tutorial on drawing the sketch. How, where do you start drawing such a complicated form, how you build up the flower... Could you show us this process please? ♥
Great suggestion, thank you 😊
Or even possibly provide a printout of the sketch for us to paint or trace😁
Used your tutorial to paint in procreate. Love your painting techinique.
Thank you 😊
Oooo - lovely - this will be difficult for me😜
Try not to put too much pressure on yourself Jessie. Just have fun 😀
Wow thank you!
This might sound silly but do you erase the pencil markings afterward? I never tried sketching an object first before painting and that sounds so much easier than totally painting from scratch!
It is not always easy to remove the pencil lines. You can if there is not watercolour on the lines 😊
Thank you!
@@KarenRiceArt thank you!
Que preciosidad .Lo veo muy difícil .Muchas gracias Karen.
Gracias Maria 😊

How do you keep your edges so crisp and fine?
I paint wet on dry, this creates fine crisp edges.

Opera Rose can fade, but keeping watercolours out of sunlight helps prevent this. Sounds like a lovely gift! 😊

Thank you for the information.
👁😍👍
How do you start the sketching of the piony?
I sketched it free hand but you could choose to trace it from a picture.
@@KarenRiceArt I see, where did you start? The middle or front or?? I'm struggeling a bit with how to begin.😐
I need sketch if peonies small amd big bud also of same group
I love the tutorial and the painting, but why is there a crease in the middle of the paper?
Thank you so much.
I’ve used a piece of paper with a fold in the middle. 😊
Beautiful
Thank you 😊
