Seriously, that was THE performance of that show. I remember multiple people who weren’t into punk at all saying that, wow, these Sum guys are really WAY above anyone else. Saw your entire 9-minute performance of MoP the other day, too, what a killer!
In some of your further videos, can you talk about your metal influences and how it affected your drumming style?

My band was in talks with Island not long before this and I remember some reps telling us stories about you guys. One about how you told the Island Canada guy he sucked to his face for signing Hanson and then another where you showed up late to some important industry dinner in full tactical gear and super soakers and just had a water gun battle in this fancy restaurant. I loved how unapologetically young and punk rock you were. Our band was a bit more serious musically so we could never really do anything like that. I was jealous of that free spirit you guys had. Love seeing you on here. I loved how you never hid your metal roots despite being labeled pretty distinctly as a pop-punk band.

I remember both of these shows! The first with Run DMC was just hilarious. The Metallica was insanely epic! You didn’t even use a double bass pedal from what I recall - sounded true to the original with little stylistic flairs that were still Sum 41. You totally honored those guys. I would have totally shit AND peed in my pants up on that stage from pure excitement! I miss MTV, VH1, and Fuse being the way it was during the 90’s and 00’s. Now it’s mostly crap reality TV. They need to bring back the music vids and live shows like this!
Steveo, I’d love to hear more about how you went from your apparently strict mom making you toss your Metallica shirt to ending up in a Punk band where you were totally off the rails - did that create a lot of trouble with your family, or did they end up supporting you?
On that note, might be cool to share your experiences with the younger generation who might want to pursue music. Lots of kids end up doing stupid shit like running away to join a band, while others end up fighting a lot at home. How do you get your family on board with this sort of thing, and what do you do if you can’t get the ‘rents to let you pursue being in a band? And are there things kids today should be doing to make good decisions and not get taken advantage of by the industry and shitty people out there? I just worry about the teens of today when their parents don’t see eye to eye and then they get taken advantage of by other adults because they’re kids who may not know better. Might be helpful to explore that topic. Tell these teens what you feel you did right and what you wish you might have done differently.
But for real, I mostly just wanna know how you went from mom making your toss that shirt to effing Steveo32 in Sum 41, lol. 😂😂😂

Dude I can remember watching sums dvds and absolutely laughing my ass off every time you’re on camera. That was such a good time of life for all of us and it’s still one of my favorite music DVDs. I remember this performance as well, and thinking to myself man y’all fucking crushed it. I’ve played drums since I was 11 years old and I’m now 41. I always thought you were one of the most solid punk drummers I ever heard and from what I’m hearing today I’m so fucking glad you’re still that solid drummer. Not only that your drum sound amazing. Yeah man, please keep making these videos because everyone is definitely enjoying the hell out of you being back and the vids are very entertaining. Much love for you man.

In some future video you will need to give us your favorite "remix-bridge" of No Brains - that is one of the best songs ever written, especially with the bridge variations. My favorite would be the one from the Tokio live DVD "Sake Bombs and Happy Endings", but the version on "Go Chuck Yourself" is pretty sick as well.

Oh man, believe or not, I was 6 years old and I remember this performance vividly. What I remember the most is seeing the cool drummer. That was you, and technically you're my first understanding of a drummer.
21 years later, here I am, a big Metallica and Sum 41 fan. Awesome video. Love you Steve! Hugs all the way from Ecuador 🇪🇨

It was always a repeat listening and watching u guys playing the medley. And my all time favorite part is the very tight drumming from the beginning to the end. Another one is everyone screaming "MASTER!!" because it gave me goosebumps every time I hear it!

You guys made such a massive statement with that record, and just kept driving after that. Your energy has always been very inspiring! So glad to see you drumming again. Cheers!!

Fun fact: it's been 21 years since the Metallica MTV Icon performance, and For Whom The Bell Tolls came out 19 years before that. So there has been a longer gap between now and this performance, than the performance and the classic song they were covering
