    I forgot all about Primus! I had a roommate who LOVED them, and I ended up going to their concert with him. The "seats" were just rows of grassey slopes and got pretty slick when they got wet. We got separated and I slipped in spilled beer and slid down a few rows. I was just like, "Oh. This is how I die. Stomped at a concert for a band where I only know two songs."
    But then some huge dude picked me up, set me back on my feet, and stood behind me the whole rest of the show to make sure I was okay. (Nobody even tried to grab my ass! It was great.) I never caught his name, but thank you, large kind man at Compton Terrace 20 something years ago!

He is known as a world class bass player for his unusual technics of tapping, slapping, and flamenco style strumming. The bass is a main instrument in his songs. You really want another good one by them do "My Name Is Mud". Les acts out as the main character in that video... and he is a character... LOL 😁

Technically speaking, In theory, it is impossible to sing or even play lead over his style... but yet here they are doing it and doing it well! This was my first introduction to Primus back when they first came to light. Been a fan ever since! Tommy The cat is another great song to listen to next!

    • @johnplaysgames3120
      @johnplaysgames3120 Год назад +1

      Yeah, that's why their guitarist (Larry Lalonde) plays such noodly guitar over the top rather than any kind of traditional riffs or shredding. Because Les's basslines are so complex, the guitar kind of has to sit back and let the bass take the lead, otherwise it would get way too busy. Musical composition is always a balance and Primus flipped the script on how bands usually use the guitar-bass combo which is part of what gives them their unique sound.

It's hard enough to understand the lyrics in the studio. The live version would only give you an impression of the music. Cool, but you want to hear the full song, lyrics and music both. Les Claypool is a master on the bass, such a catchy vibe! I knew it was going to be a classic reaction... Now Jordan, you've got to get back to the B-52"s!! LOL! Try Planet Claire on for size! Many Thanks!!

    Growing up going to tons of shows in the 90’s I’ve been in countless mosh pits and seen plenty of hard bands but the only time I feared for my safety was when I saw primus in Orlando around 96 at the embassy. It was craziest energy. Fucking amazing! Everything was so heavy, so hard!

    Primus, and especially the bassist Les Claypool, love writing songs about the shenanigans and problems that happen in small town USA. This is one of those songs, and it's only about a small town racecar driver killing himself drunk driving and an aging firefighter who was forced to retire even though he was still "strong as any man alive"

    I LOVE Amber's reaction when it gets heavy. This is a Bay Area band that writes songs based in different cities in the Bay Area. El Sob is El Sobrante and Richmond are two cities in the Bay Area. I didn't understand that until I moved up there, and then when I heard the lyrics back, I was like, "Yep, that's what these places are like." Also, the song is supposed to be what a band sounds like when Sailing the Seas of Cheese, which is the album where this song comes from.

    The thing about Les Claypool's vocals. He was born in California, but he took the vocal style from a band he loved, which also happens to be my favorite band: the Residents. They're an avant-garde experimental rock band that's currently celebrating their official 50th anniversary. The band itself was based in San Francisco, but the members were from Louisiana. When I first heard Primus I thought it was the lead singer of the Residents (the band, except for a few members, is anonymous). A lot of what Primus does, like the costumes in "Winona's Big Brown Beaver", is a homage to them, right down to wearing a "Classic Eyeball" shirt during their appearance in "Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey".
    Don't know if the Residents would be something you'd necessarily like, but I would suggest "Constantinople" (audio only - not the video) or "Hello Skinny" (definitely with the official video) to start off with. Primus has actually done covers of both of those songs.

    It’s so hard to get Primus without being there. I was a sophomore booking concerts for UC Berkeley at this time and the punk/funk movement was so big in the Bay Area/California: Primus, Pyschofunkapuss, Bluchunks, RHCP - it was a scene. It was like free-form ‘60s Atlantic jazz meets Tower Of Power meets Fear. Just insane.

    I find it hilarious that a band such as Primus, which is known for making stylistically silly music and having a quirky way of engaging with their core audience is comprised by some of the best musicians to have ever walked this Earth. Les Claypool (vocals/bass) is a Top 3 bass player and Larry Lalonde is one of the greatest living guitar players of all time, having been a protegé of Joe Satriani.

Much is said about bassist Les Claypool for good reasons, he's one of the best But, let's not forget guitarist Lsrry Lalonde and drummer Tim Alexander. They are also some of the best musicians our there. All of them have appeared on many other artists as guest musician and in very different style from Jazz, Rock, Metal, Funk, etc... these guys are at the top of class in musicianship.

    Les Claypool is the lead singer/ bassist. In my opinion, the best bassist around. It is about Jerry who was a racecar driver until he had one too many beers and wrapped himself around a telephone pole. It is also about Cpt. Pierce, a fireman.
