This was a groundbreaking song and essentially helped kicked in the door for the 90s. They were the first band that successfully fused rap and rock together into one and laid the blueprint for other bands to come in the 90s and 2000s. The Red Hot Chili Peppers took it a step further about a year later with their song 'Give It Away'

Well they were not the first to do it. Maybe bring it more mainstream. The Red Hot Chili Peppers were still not huge yet. They were your older cool brothers group. But the RHCP and FNM has a little feud. The RHCP thought FNM stole their style. Copied them. I can kind of see it. It was all so new and FNM was more hard rock/ metal than the RHCPs. They had more groove. Loved them both at this time period. I kind of phased out of FNM as they changed. Stayed with the RHCP but liked them much less as they got so popular and the music suffered.

Mike Patton is one of my ALL TIME favorite singers. I have been listening to FNM for so many years, including their most recent album, Sol Invictus, and there is a special talent here that just can't be described in words. They can rock, rap, be serious, or joke around, and it never affects the quality if their music. They are one of a kind.
Personally, my favorite song if theirs is LAST CUP OF SORROW. The song RV is a classic example of how they can be funny, creative, and talented all at the same time.
Perhaps their best 'commercial' moment was doing a cover of EASY ( Lionel Richie ), which sounds like a beautiful song when they sing it, but in actuality, they are completely making fun of it, and right before the guitar solo, Mike actually yells 'ewww' to make it obvious how they don't like it...just hilarious. Keep smiling 🤘 🙂

This song was a metaphor of the music industry at that time. Metal was being lapped by grunge and that was being overtaken by rap. So they kept asking the question of "what is it" what will the new sound be and will they be playing it. The ending piano coupled with the "fish out of water" imagery personifies this.

@@kristinpark8042 The term grunge was first used to describe the murky-guitar bands (most notably Nirvana and Pearl Jam) that emerged from Seattle in the late 1980 as a bridge between mainstream 1980s heavy metal-hard rock and postpunk alternative rock. DO YOUR HOMEWORK LOL

Now you need to react to "Everything About You" by Ugly Kid Joe. Great rock song.

Mike Patton used to sell me records in Eureka, CA when I was in high school at a record store called "The Works"! Our mutual friend and bass player Trevor Dunn formed Mr. Bungle, another outstanding Punk band!

You will not believe the range on Mike Patton's voice - he can sing anything all the way up to opera.
