You know as well as I do what they mean though, because Rock became a White artist dominated music genre. Black Americans like Chuck Berry gave it to us, but then White America adopted it and ran with it making it their own. Black Americans moved on to pioneering Rap music which for the most part White people appropriated to a much lesser extent and so is still seen as a more Black artist dominated art form.

LOL, it didn't break any barriers & people back then didn't see race like todays generation that's been trained to see race. Really sad what the left has done to peoples mentality. Whether your a white or black rock band it doesn't matter, its how good your music is that matters. The amazing thing is all the way back to the beginning of rock there were black & white bands people weren't so Obsessed" with race like people are today. We have devolved into racializing everything & its came with serious consequence's & will continue to create more & more consequences. There's more racial discrimination today then there ever was when I was growing up. Everything today has to have the "ethnic makeup" of the person inserted into it's title. Heck they didn't even use the stupid label "African American" back then. It's really so unfortunate what American Culture has become.

A “Cult of personality” is a descriptor of the phenomenon of the leaching of a figurehead’s character traits into a subculture, or society at large. It may refer to religious and or political ideologies. It is not necessarily positive or negative. The expression simply refers to the human propensity to follow BIG personalities. This is one of the reasons the song references historical figures that we view as both good and evil.
I was a teenager when this song was released and always the interpreted it’s meaning as “Great people are not always good people. Watch closely for the difference and don’t follow just anyone “.

    • @vanhattfield8292
      @vanhattfield8292 3 года назад +8

Hard to believe but the RunDMC and Aerosmith jooint venture happened way back in 1986, lol. Anthrax's song with Onyx, "Slam", was even more popular and well known than "Bring the Noise" is from their joint venture with Public enemy. "Bring the Noise" didn't start as a collaboration, Anthrax originally was just sampling Public Enemy in their version that they first played on stage in 1989. About 2 years passed before Public Enemy actually joined in and became part of the performance. Pearl Jam collaborated in the mid 90's with Cypress Hill for the song "Real Thing" while Del tha Funkee Homosapien (Gorrilaz) teamed up with Dinosaur Jr. for "Missing Link" in the same time frame. You even had R.E.M. teaming up with KRS-One for "Radio Song" that was on their LP "Out of Time" that came out in 1991. Lot's of cross genre collaborations back then and they continue up to this day. Jay-Z has had more than one.... Good stuff!!!

It's definitely a deep meaning they wish to put across, and it's really timely today. The term cult of personality kind of refers of how we can get sold leaders, social and political, that we take on perception. What we think we know about them, actually based on what they chose to show us, causes us to adopt them as worthy of our admiration and following them.

What a hilarious show , "In Living Color" . Jamie Fox and his character " Wanda" . Loved it. The meaning of the song is .... all these names he dropped were all Leaders that people believe every word that person spoke . There were only 3 names( JFK , MLK and Ghandi)that were in the song that wasn't a dictator and murderer.....

    • @jeremyraymer
      @jeremyraymer 3 года назад +1

Not sure FDR should be in the list of dictators and murderers, but I liked the line of "only you can set yourself free". People of all stripes take other people's word for it and rarely have an original thought for themselves or do their own research before coming to an opinion on something.
Maybe if people did more thinking before they act or vote things would take a turn for the better. Otherwise, we may as well all be sheep in the "Cult of Personality". Loved the reaction, guys!

Whether leaders are good or evil, they say and do the same things to gain the hearts and minds of the people - who then become mindless drones for or against them. Its as if they were in a cult. The singer isn't saying he is the cult of personality, the song is sang from the first-person perspective of this concept of fame turning someone into a cult leader.

Look in my eyes, what do you see?

    I'm the cult of personality
    Like Mussolini and Kennedy
    I'm the cult of personality

    The cult of personality
    Neon lights, Nobel Prize
When a mirror speaks, the reflection lies
You won't have to follow me
Only you can set me free
I sell the things you need to be
I'm the smiling face on your TV
    I'm the cult of personality
I exploit you, still you love me
I tell you one and one makes three
    I'm the cult of personality
    Like Joseph Stalin and Gandhi
    I'm the cult of personality
    The cult of personality
    The cult of personality
    Neon lights, Nobel Prize
When a leader speaks, that leader dies
You won't have to follow me
Only you can set you free
    You gave me fortune
    You gave me fame
You gave me power in your God's name
I'm every person you need to be
    I'm the cult of personality
    I'm the cult of

Found you guys by random chance, lol. This song, when it comes on the radio, we stop everything and sing along. We can't NOT. It's so good. Takes me back to my much younger days. Great reaction.
As for the deeper meaning of the song...A cult of personality is when people get drawn into the ideation of a central figure. Just like all the famous and infamous leaders named in the lyrics, they had a following of millions all hanging on their every word. Some for better, and some for worse. It's a warning against losing your own identity within the shadow of an influential figure, and a call to think for yourself.
