Black woman here. Glad to see you’re appreciating this. I’m 47, been listening to rock/metal since I was 11, except it wasn’t cool in my day. I grew up in military family, so my sister and I would listen to any station we could get wherever we moved. Country, classic rock, R&B, classical, college radio, who cared. Man, I was so psyched when Living Color came out while we were stationed in Germany. When you’re in high school, you get tired of people telling you what type of music you’re supposed to listen to, because of the color of your skin, especially by other Blacks. So when these Black dudes were rocking out, they couldn’t say shit. The good news is that I always stayed true to myself. My 10 yo daughter has loved Iron Maiden since she was 5 yo🙌🏽
I LOVED this band too! Vernon Reid was named No. 66 on Rolling Stone magazine's 2003 list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. Imo, he was/is a very underrated guitarist. That's awesome about your daughter too!

@Hammer hand That's more the case with major labels. Many of the underground/independent labels thrived without having to kiss the butt of Record Executives. Look at some of the legendary Punk bands... They followed the DIY esthetic, and they have huge fanbases to this day.

This song is deeper than a lot of people know. How many people exploit us based on class, race, gender, etc., but we still follow, watch movies, vote for, and hang on their every word. Those that do rise up in the face of the narrative somehow gets whacked. This has been going on since before Jesus did it to the Gentile's narrative.

"When a leader speaks, that leader dies," is the line. Note that every person he mentions is dead and that they were all killed, either assassinated or executed (a common belief was that Stalin was poisoned, though there is no definitive proof). The whole song is deep, but so it Living Color's entire discography. Well worth a listen.

Pretty sure they’re describing leaders who use charisma, propaganda, mass media, big lie, spectacle and other means to create flattery or praise of them. Usually authoritarian or totalitarian states.

@@justkerv look up the lyrics. I bought this album (on cassette actually) back when it came out and read the insert repeatedly. The lyric you are thinking about is "when a leader speaks, the reflection lies."
The actual term, "Cult of personality" was a Soviet era term, where people were taught to follow the leader like a god. But what Living Color is saying, it does not apply to just Soviet style dictators, it applies to all leaders. This is actually a very good politically educational song.

Larry Leeder That time period had a lot of bands that came and went, also known as one hit wonders. Write a really good song or two, and then just kinda fall off. Happened to plenty of bands, such as A-ha, Skid Row, Flock of Seagulls, White Zombie, Social Distortion, etc. We can’t blame one hit wonders on racial injustice.

I saw Living Colour and King's X at Foster Auditorium at the University of Alabama in 1991. The name of the building may not ring a bell, but does "The Stand In The Schoolhouse Door"? Yep. A black rock band, with special guests a black-fronted rock band, rocking the fuck out of the same building where George Wallace tried to stop black students from enrolling. And the significance was not lost on one soul in that building that night, I promise you. It was transcendent. Vernon Reid introduced "Open Letter To A Landlord" by saying, "They say the into every life a little rain must fall. But after 400 years, you get tired of being fuckin' wet." ✊

As a kid, this was one of my favorite videos, also, check out Bad Brains, another all black band, but they were in the "hardcore scene" out of D.C., and was one of the biggest influences for everything heavy music I vs I is a hard track.
Vernon is such an amazing guitarist and a very nice man. We talked about how much he loves Santa Cruz, CA and the boardwalk there. One day I'll see them again.
Living Color is in my opinion one of the Most underrated rock bands that has been around in A Min. . I Loved this band in the 80's ( Cult of Personality was released in 1988 ) and I still listen to them .

I dunno. They were good but too over commercialized. It was like the last shot at glam rock. There were a lot of bands at the tail end that had great musicians but never got too far because they missed that window on the timing.

I'm a 52 yr old white woman who always listens to all genres of music(except country & opera) when this song/album came out in 1988, friends & I were in our rock/glam rock stage...we all loved this band!! They absolutely ROCK!! We didn't give a shit that they were black...this band not only spoke to us through their lyrics but you can't help but to head bang to this song and many others by them!! And any one who thinks black people can't rock out....Jimi Hendrix is all I'm going to say!!!!! One of the top 5 ROCK artists still today...That man was a God on the guitar!!!!

No you're absolutely right. Doesn't matter if it's Hitler, Stalin, Mao or Trump. Charismatic demagogues at both ends of the political spectrum have led legions of hapless followers into despair and ruin. The only solution is for people to know their politics inside out, have a mind of their own, and not allow themselves to be swayed by false promises and partisan allegiances. But it's been hundreds of years, and we still fall into the the same traps. If we haven't learnt by now, I doubt we ever will.

Indeed, and even leaders with the best intentions can lead their followers into danger and ruin (the Kennedy soundbite at the end juxtaposed with Vietnam footage, for example). My favorite line in the song is "you gave me power in your God's name...;" meaning that by following religious leaders we risk alienating ourselves from the true source of faith (whichever faith it may be) and following the preacher and not God.

I saw these guys live when this record was just coming out. It was a perfectly mixed crowd packed into a sweaty, skanky club and it was an amazing experience. Vernon's solo on this tune went on for another 2-3 minutes. It was transcendent. Since that night I have been convinced that the racial divide in music was something perpetrated upon us that we somehow willingly accepted. It is dangerous and false and pointless. We must fight against it.
There never was a racial divide in music. Music is the great unifier. In recent years kids have been going to college and getting "woke" by racist professors who churn out more and more "educated" racists. They attack people for cultural appropriation which is ridiculous because music has always evolved from what came before. It's that cancel CULTure that is causing the problems right now.
Primus opened up for them in Mesa, Az when our governor Ev Mecham vetoed the MLK bill, which we were the only state to do. It was a one off show on short notice back in '91. I've caught them at least 10 times since, last time at my buddies club with less than 200ppl a year and a half ago. I hung out for load-in and soundcheck, and it was the first time I've seen a drummer that had mastered the looper! These guys are on a whole other level musically, and they are still the most humble of humans as well. Much love to these cats!!

Possible, but unlikely.
Culture, policy and personnel had shifted quite a bit when Lennon was murdered.
That said, he was almost actually assassinated by the state. Nixon did not like him, and put him the list of people considered for assassination by the FBI.
If Nixon didn't resign and served his term in full, it is very plausible that Lennon wouldn't have lived the 6 extra years between that and his death.

When this video was released in 1988, the only people that played this kind of music (high energy, guitar heavy, rock music) were white people. They were the only all black band mixed in with the others at that time. They were revolutionary.

The main point here is that when this song broke & they got noticed, the fact that they were black was surprising, yes, but they weren't rejected or looked down on or turned away because of it. That only seems to happen in country & hip hop. Country music seems to be loaded down with my-shit-don't-stink snobs while hip hop (MY genre) is filled with self-righteous brats screaming "Mine!". I’m an AA woman, and I loved this song during my teenage years. I liked metal and hard rock back then (as well as most other genres), and I loved that the lead singer and some instrumentalists were black but most importantly - the song rocked.

But that was back when WWE was good and the wrestlers we call vets today where competing in a daily basis. Now the theme song are ok at best but I miss when the themes where music for top bands.
@@julioostrum6115 Actually, having WWE license Cult of Personality for him was part of his contract negotiations. He used it a lot on the indies whenever he wasn't using random straight edge groups. The only reason he had Killswitch to begin with is because it was originally licensed for Randy Orton, but after one try on a Raw, they realized it didn't work for him. They had the license and had to do something with it, so they gave it to Punk when he was called up to WWECW from OVW.

I am a white woman who saw this band in concert in the late 80s'. They were fantastic. That solo guitar almost made me faint he was so good. lol I was not shocked that they were black and played rock. I was a teen when Jimi Hendrix was popular. Anybody can rock if they want to. Rock is my favorite genre. :D

It is sad to say but, we black people pigeon hole ourselves A lot and can be quite ignorant. I have been listening to rock all my life. When I first saw living colour the colour of their skin was secondary to their music. They were just great.
I was always a white rocker and in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s I thought these guys were the BEST band around. When I first saw them, I thought black people were going to reclaim Rock music because it was black people who invented Rock & Roll. Sadly, it didn’t happen. I don’t know why.

Vernon Reid was a highly respected jazz fusion guitarist before launching this band. In 1986 he played on Public Enemy's "Sophisticated Bitvh" from their debut Yo! Bum Rush the Show!
Bad Brains started as a Jazz Fusion band, named Mind Power, in 1978. One of their former bandmembers introduced them to Punk Rock, and they later saw Bob Marley, live in DC. The rest is history!

I agree, but I think there is a little more there. There were over 18 assassination attempts on Hitler by the German military alone. It's mind boggling the near misses he had. So being assassinated doesn't necissarily mean you were good though it certainly doesn't mean you weren't.
