Their album "America's Least Wanted" is one of the most underrated album of the 90s. Cat's in the Cradle, Goddamn Devil, Busy Bee, Come Tomorrow, and so many more. Every song was different from the last, and I never got bored with it.
I directed this video for the band back in the day. .. “That was so ODD!” 😂 One thing to know about Ugly Kid Joe is that many of their songs are sarcastic and/or tongue in cheek, so don’t take them too seriously in that sense. As a teenager I loved their sense of humor. I saw them open for another band when I was in high school, and it was before this song came out and they got popular, so most of the crowd didn’t know them. Before this song, they said “We’d like to dedicate this one to all of you.” And we thought it would be a sweet song. Everyone laughed so hard when we realized what they were actually saying. I loved them after that show and became a fan, and their albums were really good! I hope you check out more of them and now you’ll know that they have a strange sense of humor. I’m sure everyone will tell you to check out “Cat’s in the Cradle”, and you should because it’s great. But their song “So Damn Cool” has one of the best guitar riffs in all of metaldom-J will LOVE it! Ironic that Amber was wearing a shirt about kind people during this recording though. 😂😂😂

Initially their name was Overdrive. The band adopted the name Ugly Kid Joe when they were in Santa Barbara opening for the band "Pretty Boy Floyd". The name, of course, is a parody 😂 Amber nailed the meaning of the song. It's totally about teenage angst.
Actually, the song isn't about teenage angst at all. It's simply a tongue-in-cheek shout-out to the band's friend Daryl, notoriously anti-everything. Thankfully, he got the gist and was amused, not offended, by the song.
Well, _supposed_ to open for them. The show ended up being cancelled but the name stuck around. To the benefit of both bands in the end I think. PBF got some press and Overdrive got a better name. Though I think the name Overdrive had already been ditched. That was supposedly the whole reason the name UKJ came about in the first place. They had this gig lined up but were scrambling for a name so they "inverted" PBF's name as a temporary solution.
They have a banger called "Won't you be my neighbor" too. I'm sure everybody has at least 1 person in their lives they could dedicate this song too. Even the good hearted people like Amber. Haha. You can't love everyone. 😂
@robertg7396 - "I'm sure everybody has at least 1 person in their lives they could dedicate this song to" Yeah, my first wife. Not only this song, but also "Little Miss Can't Be Wrong" from the Spin Doctors.
Lead singer's name is Whitfield Crane. Debut single on their 1991 EP, As Ugly as They Wanna Be. It was in the movie Wayne's World, and included on their 1st album America's Least Wanted of 1992. Their biggest original song, only their cover of Cats in the Cradle did better.
Chriso, the song in this video was in Wayne’s World? Odd that I don’t remember it being in the movie (but it has been ~30 years since I’ve seen it lol)… Do you remember what scene it was featured in?
I saw Ugly Kid Joe at the Berkeley Square right as they were blowing up. To start their show they came out like it was the end of the show and smashed the instruments on stage then ran off. The stage went dark and everyone in the club said WTF. About 3 minutes later they came out and started the show, it was a riot cause they did not take themselves too seriously and were just having fun.

Check out more of these guys, they rock! Another one you should check out is their cover of "Cat's in the Cradle"! They were one of the bands that came out in the early 90's that were just a little bit late to the party! Shortly before grunge took over, but still had some good stuff before they faded! 🎸🎸👍
I was on a rock cruise a few years ago and the singer Whit Crane was coming out the elevator as I was going in and he saw my long hair and said, "rad metal hair." My wife and I still laugh about it.
Their debut album was called "Ugly As We Wanna Be," probably inspired by 2 Live Crew's "Nasty As We Wanna Be" or maybe James Brown's ad-libbed line "funky as we wanna be" from "Cold Sweat."
I remember well the first time I heard this song. I was 20, and early one morning I stopped by my girlfriend's house. She was asleep in the bed with another guy. Broke my heart. I left her house and "End of the Road" by boys 2 men came on the radio. Of course that got me in my feels. I switch to a rock station and here was this awesome song!!! Totally changed my attitude!!! LOVE IT!!!
What a banger! So much fun! We used to shout out these lyrics at each other while partying to this when it came out in high school! Good times! "Cats In The Cradle" is another great song they released, a cover I believe, but they made their own.
2 hit wonder band & strangely, BOTH records went Top 10. This one peaked @ #9 in 1992 & the follow-up "Cats in the Cradle" peaked @ #6 in 1993. Then ---nothing.
We had Ugly Kid Joe perform at our venue a few weeks ago. 🤩 Whitfield Crane (lead singer) was such a nice guy. Polite, friendly. I jokingly asked him who he was when he came to check in (we had the keys ready ahead of time) and without hesitating he identified himself but I flipped his key onto the counter before he could finish with a big smile (couldn't help it). He smiled back and winked. Awesome! And he said our suites were sick! 😊 It's the little things. 😁 You should really check out their cover of Cats in the Cradle. ❤
This song hit on something long, long forgotten; having fun and not taking things too seriously. The majority of songs in the world seem to be love songs and I've always been a fan of the 'anti-love' song (Don't Tell Me You Love Me, anyone?). Why? Because there's a tongue and cheek thing to them. Think about this song live and and the singer holding the mic to the audience at the end of the chorus. The whole crowd would shout 'HATE EVERYTHING ABOUT YOU!'...Because it's funny.
You have no idea how many radio dedications this song had....if you are even old enough to know what a radio dedication is... For those that aren't old enough, back in the day before the internet we listened to our music on the radio. DJs had shows and would take requests. Often these requests were dedications, so and so dedicates a certain song to his girlfriend....Well this one got dedicated to exes, and people someone just didn't like. You would hear it every Friday night here...DJ: "And here we go with another dedication going out to Freddy, Linda, Jamie, Annie, Jojo, and Scott. Y'all made someone mad. It's Ugly kid Joe with I hate everything about YOU!" Good times lol.
HAD TO LOOK THIS UP!!! Initially named Overdrive, then Suburban White Alcoholic Trash, the band got its name Ugly Kid Joe as a parody of L.A. glam band Pretty Boy Floyd, initially for a one night show in Santa Barbara opening for Pretty Boy Floyd.
I was laughing my butt off the second I turned on the video and saw just how perfect it was that Amber was wearing that shirt about to listen to this song! As others below have mentioned, they did a great cover of "Cats in the Cradle." The band was kind of two hit wonders. I know those were the only two songs of theirs I ever heard on the radio where I lived. I loved another song they did called "Panhandling Prince." If I remember right, it was the b-side to the "Everything About You" cassette single.
As soon as I saw the shirt, I knew she was in for a shock. I have (had? No idea where it might be) the cassette single… I don’t remember the B side at all.
I saw him at Rockfest in KC when he was with Another Animal. He talked with a local DJ and said how he just crashed on people’s couches and traveled around. At that time he hadn’t bought a house or anything. True R&R lifestyle.
This song came out in ‘92. More songs you need to check out from the early 90s: ‘So What’Cha Want’ (‘92) and ‘Sabotage’ (‘94); both are by The Beastie Boys. The 90s were a great time.
I loved that record when it came out. Most of their songs are tongue-in-cheek like this one, but they did have a few more serious songs like their cover of Harry Chapin's "Cats In the Cradle" and a song called "Busy Bee" that's basically about being okay with everybody because you're honestly too busy to have time to hate everything and eveybody all the time.
They got their name because of the band, Pretty Boy Floyd. They were touring together and thought, Ugly Kid Joe was a great opposite to the other band's name.
Another iconic banger...you guys are gonna be so tripped out by this one! 💯😁 Here is the trick to enjoying the song...every time he says h8, you sing luv...since there is such a fine line between luv and h8, nobody can tell you that you are wrong.😜
The band's name spoofs the glam metal band Pretty Boy Floyd's name. Initially named Overdrive, then Suburban White Alcoholic Trash, the band got its name Ugly Kid Joe as a parody of L.A. glam band Pretty Boy Floyd, initially for a one night show in Santa Barbara opening for Pretty Boy Floyd. Pretty Boy Floyd would pull out of the show and have the gig cancelled, but the band decided to keep the name.
If somebody hasn't commented yet, the name "Ugly Kid Joe" is because there was a previous band called "Pretty Boy Floyd". This sond was not surprisingly ALL OVER the radio with dedications when it first was out!!!!
They named their band that because they were playing their first show opening for a band called Pretty Boy Floyd and didn't have a name for their band. So at the last minute they decided on Ugly Kid Joe.
In like 1992 I Hangout with Ugly kid Joe when they came to Memphis and Whitfield asked us to come to Atlanta and hangout some more he had a thing for my female roommate they were the nicest and coolest guys ever. They told us how early that day they got kicked out of Graceland for pulling their pants down and tucking their man parts in between their legs on the front porch of Graceland they were really awesome!!!
So, from what I understand, they were getting ready to play with Pretty Boy Floyd, and still hadn't found a name. So they were like what's the opposite of that, and still sounds cool, so it's a play on that name. And my mom who was born in the forties, absolutely adored this song when she heard it, she thought it was hilarious, and would request I play it a lot, along with AC/DC!
As I heard it, they were having trouble deciding on a name and had gone through several. Then they were performing a show and going on after a band called, "Pretty Boy Floyd." So as a bit of a joke they came out as "Ugly Kid Joe," and it stuck.
They opened for a band called pretty boy Floyd and they’d yet settled on a name for their band and came up with Ugly Kid Joe My all time favorite band EVER
The video for this was why the song works. Julia Sweeney, who played a TG named Pat on SNL, is the very confused person on the beach. This video, however, would really be considered controversial now. The other big hit for this group is a fantastic remake of Cats In The Cradle - original by Harry Chapin. Ugly Kid Joe nails it with authority and class.
The singer, Whitfield Crane, was in a band called 'Medication' after Ugy kid Joe.....really liked their album, alas the only album they made.....dude got some incredible pipes!
Their album "America's Least Wanted" is one of the most underrated album of the 90s. Cat's in the Cradle, Goddamn Devil, Busy Bee, Come Tomorrow, and so many more. Every song was different from the last, and I never got bored with it.
Great album! I would add So Damn Cool and Madman to your list of best songs.

Their name is a play on an 80s glam band called Pretty Boy Floyd. They did an excellent cover of Cat Steven's Cat In The Cradle.
It's Ugly kid Joe with I hate everything about YOU!"
Good times lol.
These guys came in at the very end of hair metal. They were extremely talented.
Neighbor, God, Madman and Jesus Rode a Harley are all great songs to check out from these guys.🔥🤘🏻
Ugly kid Joe’s milkman’s son is a rocking song worth reacting to. Highly recommended!!!
I so loved this song when it came out, for me it was a fun song that made me laugh
I saw him at Rockfest in KC when he was with Another Animal. He talked with a local DJ and said how he just crashed on people’s couches and traveled around. At that time he hadn’t bought a house or anything. True R&R lifestyle.
So many great ugly kid joe songs to listen to like
1. Neighbor
2. Milkmans son
3. Madman
4. Funky fresh country club
5. GodDamn Devil
Ect ect ect
Saw them at the Playroom. Great band and fun to party with later.
Another iconic banger...you guys are gonna be so tripped out by this one! 💯😁
Here is the trick to enjoying the song...every time he says h8, you sing luv...since there is such a fine line between luv and h8, nobody can tell you that you are wrong.😜
the last line 🤣
the way he said it
Wow...this song took me back to my teens! You should check out their cover of "Cats in the Cradle."
One of my favorite songs of the 90s, along with Green Jelly three little pigs.
They did a cracking cover of Cat’s In The Cradle!!!
You really need to listen to their version of Cat's in the cradle - its like night and day. I love your diverse music tastes :)
That's the radio edit version. There is another verse during the rappy part that is very vulgar that is missing
Their drummer has been in Godsmack for over 20 years.
This song reminds me of high school. They do the best version of Cats in the cradle. I used this song as my song for a girl who cheated on me.
Me too couldn't agree more
Harry Chapin did the best version. This bunch butchered a classic
"Cats in the Cradle" is another great one by Ugly Kid Joe.
Amber nailed the shirt for this song lol
Just saw these guys in 23 and they still have the same fun energy.
"Neighbor", "Madman" and "Cats in the cradle" ...all good
Their drummer, a fellow named Shannon Larkin, went on to play in a band called Godsmack.
Their cats in the cradle cover is phenomenal, but god damn devil and neighbor are 2 bangers
Ok, very nice. This gave me flashbacks. "Neighbor" is also a great Ugly Kid Joe tune.
As I heard it, they were having trouble deciding on a name and had gone through several. Then they were performing a show and going on after a band called, "Pretty Boy Floyd." So as a bit of a joke they came out as "Ugly Kid Joe," and it stuck.
They opened for a band called pretty boy Floyd and they’d yet settled on a name for their band and came up with Ugly Kid Joe
My all time favorite band EVER
The video for this was why the song works. Julia Sweeney, who played a TG named Pat on SNL, is the very confused person on the beach. This video, however, would really be considered controversial now. The other big hit for this group is a fantastic remake of Cats In The Cradle - original by Harry Chapin. Ugly Kid Joe nails it with authority and class.
This song perfectly encapsulate that weird period between hair metal and grunge
The singer is whit Crane. I went to high school with him and the guitar player, Klaus Eichstadt.
We always got great crowd pop playing this song. Pure fun.
This song brings back so much memories.. I was 13 when this song came out.. Crazy🤪 Time flys🤔
love that amber's shirt say's "kind people are my kind of people "while reacting to the ultimate hate song😄😄
The singer, Whitfield Crane, was in a band called 'Medication' after Ugy kid Joe.....really liked their album, alas the only album they made.....dude got some incredible pipes!
