    Ugly Kid Joe would be characterized by the media as a relic of the hair metal era while others referred to them as a comic hard partying metal band, but in reality the group’s individual members came from diverse musical backgrounds influenced by the likes of Black Sabbath, Motley Crue, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Motorhead and many others. They also weren’t afraid to mix humor with their music they quickly became overnight rockstars and made history. But, whatever happened to the group? Stay tuned to find out!
    Ugly kid joe began with guitarist Klaus Eichstadt and frontman Whitfield Crane who grew up in Palo Alto California and formed a band in the late 80s. Initially called Overdrive, before settling on Ugly Kid Joe, The band's name was a goof on the glam rockers Pretty Boy Floyd, for whom the band were supposed to open at one point in time.
    Ugly Kid Joe would play gigs around the Santa Barbara area and gave their demo to a local DJ named Will Carlin who then passed it onto an entertainment lawyer who became the band’s manager and got them a deal with mercury records.
    Shortly after signing to Mercury in early 1991, the pair realized they needed to round out their lineup with better musicians. During the band’s career their lineup’s core has always centered around Eichstadt and Crane with a revolving cast of characters coming and going.
    Their debut release, an EP titled As Ugly As They Wanna Be, was a spoof of the hugely controversial 2 Live Crew album As Nasty As They Wanna Be. It took a week to record and cost the label around $12,000 to make. Mercury Records was hoping for the EP to sell maybe 15,000 copies and it soon enough became the first debut EP in history to go multi-platinum thanks in large part to the single ‘Everything about you’ which rocked mtv and radio airwaves. The album rocketed to the number 4 on the billboard charts and peaked at number 3 across the pond in Britain. The band also licensed the song to the first Wayne’s World movie.
    According to billboard magazine, there was a special way that the label promoted the album. When the band first got signed Mercury records, the label helped get the album into small mom and pop shops where traditionally bigger labels hadn’t sold albums to. According to Bob Skoro, who was the head of A&R at mercury records who would tell Billboard magazine “None of the major distributors sell to mom and pop shops. That’s where the young rock and metal lovers go. That’s where the buzz starts” In addition to that it would be a station in Denver KBPI who moved the single Everything About You from their metal show to regular programming. Within a few weeks, Ugly Kid Joe became the second highest requested song after Metallica. Soon enoughthe band played denver and local retailers could feel the excitement behind the group and MTV followed soon after.
    The EP took on a humorous tone with tracks like “Madman” describing an axe wielding man on the lose in Disneyland. The band at one point was supposed to write music for the 1992 film Encino Man, but once Don Eisner at Disney heard the song he axed the deal.
    Critics weren’t always fans of ugly kid joe. The Chicago Tribune stated the following about the EP’s single Everything about you “the single, which has a novelty-song kind of appeal, pretty much sums up the entire 25-minute disc, which is a cacophony of funk, rap, lame choruses and old jokes."
    Despite critics not being fans of their's, the band did get some high profile touring slots opening for the likes of Ozzy Osbourne and Def Leppard.
    The band would soon follow up their EP with their first full length studio record 1992’s America’s Least Wanted. The album featured a surprising cover of Harry Chapin’s Cat’s in the Cradle which was a huge hit on rock radio and became the band’s second top 10 hit. The single Everything About You which was released on their first EP in addition to the song Madman would also appear on the LP. Despite the fact that the album was the band’s most commercially successful of their career going double platinum, it again mostly received mixed reviews from critics with the LA times giivng it 1.5/4 stars claiming ugly kid joe were and i quote "generic MTV-rad-party dud

    On their first national tour, in Kansas City, my brother and I hung outside the venue to meet the band. Which we eventually succeeded in doing. We were approached by the bands manager who was wondering where the closest bank could be found. We offered to take him to the bank, which was close. We stood behind him as he transfered 8000$ ( which obviously we had no clue he had on him). He later explained it was the money from merch sales from the previous few weeks on the road. This was at the bands height. For taking the manager we got to hang out with the band, tickets to show, watch sound check ( which was closed to the public) , and my brother and I got tour shirts.The band were all super cool guys.
    Good memories.

      A few weeks on tour and only $8000? Just some simple math, if their shirts cost about $30-35 like other bands in the late 80s were that comes to between 205 and 270 shirts sold in the weeks preceding. If you take 3 weeks because OP said few weeks but not month or months that is 21 days. That would come out to between 10-13 shirts a night. Now maybe they weren't working every night, you have to figure 5 nights a week. At the height they are in demand and promoters know bands don't stay hot forever so they are pumping out shows to make the money while it is hot. So 5 days a week in 3 weeks that's 15 days that brings the total to a whopping 15.2 to 17.7 or 15 to 18 shirts a night. That isn't too impressive for the biggest period in their career. Either numbers are off or the manager was either up to no good or not being truthful to OP.

    • @barkinghumans
      @barkinghumans 3 года назад +13

      @@TheEWFX29 or maybe they also deposited money at the last stop too. Who knows, I doubt the OP was privy to the inner workings of their financials. The manager obviously gave him a broad stroke of the... nevermind. Probably wired money to their coke dealer

      They were often seen as goofy(their mascot didn't help(lol!)), but they were a good band. Saw them open in '93 for Def Leppard. Also, as a fan of Pretty Boy Floyd, I never wondered about UKJ's name. It was too close(and comical) to not be a parody. Same with the debut ep's name, lol! Fan of The 2 Live Crew, knew of the ep's title's inspiration, lol! One thing I always wondered about, though, is why "Everything About You" wasn't on the "Wayne's World" soundtrack. Only thing I can see is the availability of the song. Why would people buy the ep if they can just get the soundtrack? Some people might've (I would've, and actually do have both), but perhaps some might not've.

      I was in a Ft.Lauderdale bar one night when there was a Superbowl going on. It was the only time that the Superbowl played there. The bar was pretty packed and I knew the band that was playing there that night and the lead singer had just shaved his head where he used to have long hair, and a lot of guys there had the new close cropped look going on except for myself and 2 other guys at the end of the bar where I was sitting where one of the 2 said to me, still sitting at the end of the bar, I was about in the middle, "Looks like we're the only long hairs here tonight" to which I said/yelled "Yeah ain't no one here but us hair farmers" as a joke but the guy just raised his eyebrows and started watching the band, I decided to go over and explain that I was kidding around and that's when he told me that he was Klaus from UKJ and you're right he was a laid back great guy. Turns out the he and a buddy came to town to see the Superbowl we hung out all night chit chatting until they went back to their motel where they were staying because they had to catch a flight out the next morning.

    I loved discovering them on "America's Least Wanted" as a kid, so many great songs! Also I loved the darker and heavier "Menace to Sobriety" Milkman's Son, Cloudy Skies, Jesus Rode a Harley, God, Tomorrow's World... sooo many great ones with kick ass musicianship and the greatest vocals ever! I didn't like how they started sounding more and more depressed and resigned on later releases, even on the new ones, they still got it live, but the spark/fire/fun got lost.
    I know I end up being the most hated guy for not approving an artist's way of delevlopement, but I'd love to produce an album with them that's a mix of America's and Menace! Selfish thought, but I'd love to hear that!

    Please give the message to these critics. When Everything About You was released my country was at the beginning of the civil war. Me, my sisters and my boys were all in agreement about dark, existential or deeply artistic music, that is what we were listening to. Every once in a while one of us would introduce a piece of music that would help us to occasionally brighten up a little lol. We could never agree on any of it except on Ugly Kid Joe. The inclusion of Shannon Larkin on drums on Menace to sobriety just supercharged their sound moving forwards. And a quick FYI: All 3 90sLPs and the one EP have been re-released on vinyl and are stunning vinyl editions. Americas least wanted is a double LP with side D being Their ugly as the wannabe EP. There’s also Menace to sobriety and for first time Evers non Stardog records pressing of Motel California. Well Ugly Kid Joe had the same issue as Jackyl (another group I'd like to see a "Whatever happened to" video on): Their sound was too heavy for alternative/grunge; their image didn't fit the hair metal look.
    Their cover of "Cats in the Cradle" made a sad song even more depressing. Also, the humor in their lyrics and album titles/artwork is worth a giggle.
    One of my friends was lucky to see them and Motorhead open for Ozzy in 92.

      UKJ's version of "Cats In The Cradle" does NOT follow the chorus the way the late Harry Chapin did. HC answered the part in the chorus "When are you coming home...Dad...I don't know when..." for the first two chorus stanzas, then changed it to "When are you coming home...son...I don't know when..." for the remainder of the song. OTOH, UKJ did "When are you coming home...son...I don't know when..." in the chorus throughout the entire song.

    Anyone remember "The Crusher"? It was a nationally syndicated AM radio station back in the early 90's that played nothing but metal. Great morning listening at work, especially for AM radio. This was back in the day before AM radio was taken over by sports talk. The Crusher took on-air requests from all over the nation and it was fun listening. That was where I first got my taste of Ugly Kid Joe and many others. And now I have a request for ROCK N' ROLL TRUE STORIES please. • @SamiiYou
      @SamiiYou 3 года назад

      What are you talking about? Hitler didn't even get into art school probably because his skill set was more along the lines of a draftsman than that of a artist and he simply couldn't afford or be bothered to get into architecture, which he would of probably been good at if he had applied himself to it rather than bumming around town burning through his inheritance. He never had a passion for art but was quite into architecture and would bore the few friends he had with how he was going to rebuild Vienna to some vision he had in his head.

      @@SamiiYou it was a joke above anything else. He did lament not persuing art at multiple times later on. Also got demoralized, but like you said, was his own fault.
      The cafes did create his bad views and his gutter runner service in WWI and subsequent imprisonment steered him even further.
      At least he designed the swastica very well, based on its original design of the sun symbol.

    I really don't know this band. I only listened their two hits.

    I saw UKJ in concert at a rock club in Tampa. It was small and sweaty but they put on a hell of a show and rocked the place. Cost me like $20 but one of the best, most fun concerts ever.

    I had forgotten all about these guys. I haven’t heard them since the 90s.

    I believe Ugly Kid Joe is by far one of the most underrated and unappreciated bands of all time... I think their humor overshadowed their talent and recognition they deserved.
