I was 12 when they hit it big and I only listened to their one hit. A few years ago I decided to listen to the rest of the album and it’s surprisingly good.
Man Ugly Kid Joe is one of my All Time Favorite Bands!! Whiplash liquor pays tribute to their former band name in the lyrics...Suburban, White, Alcoholic Trash! Sweet Leaf cover is amazing, showing love to Ozzy! God Damn Devil, Tomorrow's World, Madman, Panhandling Prince all just blew me away!! My band still plays Everything about you, simply because it's so recognized to this day but if I had it my way I'd play something else from their incredible catalog. I have so much respect for what they did musically!!
I saw them at a small venue back in 1996, they played for over 2 hours. I’ve seen a lot of shows and UKJ is one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. I’ll never forget it. THEY ROCKED!!
I was listening to UKJ just the other day. They should’ve been so much bigger than they ever got. The production on their albums is so damn good and the guitar playing is awesome.
Extremely underappreciated. Great songwriting and often overlooked due to their party songs. Cloudy skies is a personal favorite. Funky fresh country club is a killer tune.
Their rendition of Harry Chapin's Cat's in the Cradle was simply haunting. Sad song with a message but theirs gave me chills. Love it. Also...broke up with a girl in junior high by requesting and dedicating Hate Everything About You. Rude in hindsight but legendary at the time.
You gotta admit, paying someone in $14 cash and Mountain Dew, a candy bar and a bag of Doritos is the most Rock 'n' Roll thing ever. LOVE "Everything About You" and their amazing (and surprising) cover of Harry Chapin's "Cat's In The Cradle." Major kudos on your Judas Priest *British Steel* t-shirt!! 🤘🏻🤘🏻
One of my all time favorite bands. Saw them in Vegas back in May. Amazing show. I’ve waited since high school to finally see them and I couldn’t be more happier. Whit’s sister was also at the show, funny you mention her. Rest in Peace, Moish Brennan
I was in LOVE with Crane in the 90s! I still have them on a tape I recorded from the radio 😅. I was pleasantly surprised to learn they were still around last year but!
i was a kid when they blew up on mtv. the main thing I remember is it felt like the first time I saw a video with the musicians wearing regular clothes like mine. that was a big deal to me because up until that point any rock video on mtv has dudes in spandex and weird outfits.
I loved Ugly Kid Joe when I was in middle school, lol. I played the Cat's in the Cradle song for my dad as a kid, to try to inform him of how things were going, and where they would go in the future. He didn't listen. He has a lot of regret now.
I lean towards both. It was them and Stuck Mojo for me. UKJ was the mainstream (at the time, radio) and Stuck Mojo was like the underground. Love both bands.
Both bands have a link to Brooklyns Life of Agony. Whit sang for Loa and member of stuck mojo were in a band with life of agonys guitarist Joey z. Band was steromud
@@davejanssens3923 so many connections. I still listen to both UKK and Mojo. I just heard the new PRONG. Its amazing... Nice breath of old school with some newish twist...
In the era they came out, they were as anti whatever they wanted to be. Loved them then love them now. They were a great mark on my childhood and adolescence. Still fun AF to listen to today.
I'm from Brazil and I love your channel. I would really like to see a video about bands that are or were big in the US but can't or could as well in other countries. It seems like every band's goal is to hit the US, 'cause when you conquer the US, you conquer the world. What happen to bands like Third Eye Blind and Collective Soul? In Brazil we have big Festivals like Rock in Rio and Lollapalooza, can't you tell me why those bands have never been to Brazil for exemple?
You ask a great question my friend. Both those bands are on my to do list, in a few weeks you’ll see one of them on my channel. A guy at work stopped me and asked me “when are you doing this band?”
Great video. I went to see UKJ down in Austin in 1992 and the three of us were the only ones that showed up. They played a full set and then hung out with us. Their music video showed up on MTV shortly afterward and when we saw them next, it was standing room only.
I remember getting their EP when Everything About You and was really impressed with it especially Madman..their first full album America's Least Wanted was brilliant
Saw them open for Ozzy in 1992, where their lead singer said F-You to the crowd repeatedly. This was in Seattle, the capital ($$$) of Grunge. Knowing more about their sense of humor now, they were a much-needed breath of flatulence. Love their parodies!
So cool that you brought up that Krist Novoselic quote. Buttholse Surfers reminded me of another artist that Kurt Cobain liked: Steven "Jesse" Bernstein. Could you talk about Jesse on your next video?? :)
TRIVIA: UGLY KID JOE's friend Kirk Hammett also helped them to get a record break. They always thank him on their acknowledgement printed on their album. 🤘😃
Did you know? Whit, Kirk, and Robert (off & on) have performed in a party style cover band called "The Wedding Band." There are some quality videos available on RUclips. Their playlist is quite impressive and wide-ranging. Check it out.
underrated band. Menace to Sobriety was fucking excellent. Saw them live twice, one in Nottingham Rock City back on the Menace tour, one in Munich at a free show on their revival in 2013.
Great band! One of my absolute favorites from the 90’s, I remember picking up the EP in the store when I was like 14 or 15 and seeing the cover and reading the tracklist and buying it out of sheer curiosity. I’ve been a fan ever since.
Lived in Tenn in the 90's and drove into Kentucky to see them play. It was a great show. I even hung out with Whit at a bar after just chilling and chatting. He was talking about going to see his mom and his sister. They are all about the music instead of fame & fortune. It's what makes them good even today. I still listen to their stuff and still love it. It's a great combination of rock and humor. Rock on Ugly Kid Joe 🤘🏼

What happened to UKJ was that they arrived too soon in 1991. Hair metal was dying, but it wasn't quite dead yet. Their arrival while that genre was still going caused them to be lumped into it even though their sound was different, and they then died with it. Had they arrived in 93-94 they would've had much more staying power.
Have a listen to America's Least Wanted and just appreciative the creative rhythm guitar riffs, the amazing emotive guitar solos, the funky bass, complex drumming and the inventive compositions. Crane's voice is awesome. The thing that held them back in my opinion was the one too many cheeseball lyrics. Underrated band that could have developed into something great. Thanks for the video.
Whitfield Crane used to date the MTV Girl Karen Duffy. She was called The Duff. She was so pretty. Then She had cancer and lost her hair. One time when her hair was growing back she wore an outfit with a hat. That old lady Joan Rivers made fun of her outfit & her hat. So she had to come out & tell everyone She wore the hat b/c she had cancer. She survived and is married with kids. I loved her when I was a kid. She was a great host on MTV.
Saw them Live in 90s as Ugly kid Joe and in 2005 as 'Medication'...So basically they went on to create yet another Awesome Band! ...Thank You Whitfield ❤

Just saw them this summer. They released four or five videos this past year. This band ROCKS HARD.
The end.
Seriously? New releases?! Thank you! I will look them up now. I loved them when they came out. Awesome to know that they are still at it.
