This is a classic drive of one team just imposing their will over another. Aikman wasn't right that game as he was still dealing with concussion symptoms from the week before that knocked him out of the NFCC game against SF. Buffalo led at halftime and Jimmy Johnson basically said, "Fuck This! On our first drive after halftime, we're going to run the same run (Nate Newton pulling) behind Gogan and Williams again and again with Emmitt and MAKE them stop us. There was nothing the Bills defense could do.
And you know that Buffalo defense WAS GOOD. I mean Bruce Smith is in the HOF. Daryll Talley and Cornelius Bennet were Pro Bowlers. Buffalo was a good damn team. They just never managed to get it together on the games biggest stage.

They always credit that o-line...the one that didn't make Derrick Lassic or Lincoln Coleman or Tommie Agee or Curvin Richards 4 ypc rushers. None of his backups from 1992-1994 averaged 4 yards a carry, but Emmitt was 'carried' by his o-line. If that was the case, his holdout would've blown up in his face and Dallas would've rolled to the title in 1993 without him. Dude was the heart and soul of that entire team.
And the thing of it is Kevin Gogan, Nate Newton and Mark Tuinei were all Landry Era players. In fact they were part of an O Line that was called one of the worst in the league before Emmitt got to town. They blocked for Herschel Walker and Tony Dorsett and were called terrible. The only players that were new to the line when Dallas started winning Super Bowls were Mark Stepnoski (who replaced Tom Rafferty one of the best centers Dallas ever had and who also blocked for Walker and Dorsett) and Eric Williams. So you are telling me that Eric Williams turned this group from the worst line in the league into the best line in the league? GTFO with that noise.
As a lifelong fan, I’m from DFW, I was most inthralled with the Cowboys teams of the 90s as I’m the same generation as the key guys on that team during their run. This drive defined who the 90s Cowboys were like no other. Thanks for the memories 👍
I love my cowboys from the first time I seen them as a kid and for the rest of my life!!!. For my cowboys now though, watch these times games and run that ball more!!! LOL. that helps you tire the defense quickly and makes the winning of games a hell of a lot easier :). Cowboys fan for life! :)
Im not a Cowboys fan ....but boy could l appreciate this team. In my humble opinion simply the best offense ever constructed. Totally balanced. They just drove the field with the run, add in a screen pass, go back to the run on 3rd and 3 and bam touchdown. I dont recall an offense that could grind down the clock or put up points at will like the cowboys did back in their 3 Super Bowls in the early 90s. Simply the best.
With the new cap we will never see another team like this. There were Soooo many great teams during the 90's. Hall of fame teams. Now you have to have a great draft then unload your superbowl team because of a cap.
I remember watching that game. Dallas had crushed the Bills the year before but Buffalo had played them tough the first half. Even though it was still early in the 3rd quarter, the game was over. Buffalo looked whipped and the Cowboys destroyed them.
Texpantego The Bills had beaten Dallas in the regular season in 1993 and were down by 7 in the 4th before Dallas put the game away with a 4th down td run by Emmett. I was glad for Emmett and Aikman for winning the year before but wanted Bruce Smith,Andre Reed etc. to win this Super Bowl.
That offensive line was unstoppable in games like this. They would dare you to stop them in the 4th quarter, and then repeatedly smash you in the mouth, until your will was gone.
22 put on a show right here I still today have not seen a running back hit the wholes and break tackles like this other backs should still watch and learn
Nonsense. You saw what happened when Emmitt sat out a play. The same thing that always happened....the offense suddenly looked weak. They managed a 2 yard play without Emmitt. He comes back, breaks a tackle behind the line and it's a TD. Aikman was the player on that team who was overrated. Without Emmitt he never could play that well. If Emmitt missed a game...they lost. With Emmitt, they won without Aikman.
It was so clear that Bob Trumpy was rotting for the Bill during this broadcast. Troy still cannot remember most of this game because he played with a severe concussion. Still Troy was throwing darts on timing passes. Troy Aikman was a MACHINE!!
Yep...Tuinei, Newton, and Gogan were all on that team. Which FURTHERS my point that Emmitt Smith was not a mere product of the offensive line. If that was the case, Lincoln Coleman and Derrick Lassic would've rendered him irrelevant during his holdout.
The Line was actually different every year during Emmitt's prime years. They replaced at least one player every year and Emmitt kept dominating. No one ever suggested for a minute that Newton, Gogan, and Tuinei were remotely capable of being part of a great O-line...until Emmitt showed up. Suddenly all those guys looked "great". What a coincidence that every guy the Cowboys plugged into that line in the early 90s played "great".
If people remember, in the second Super Bowl against Buffalo, Dallas came out flat as hell. Emmitt wasn't fully recovered from the separated shoulder he injured vs New York Giants. Coach Johnson said to gain momentum, he was going to turn loose those 5 big, mean, kick your ass offensive line, power football. Dallas was down by 10 at the half. I remember the sequence of events as if it was this morning. The Dallas defense cause a fumble that James Washington picked up with a convoy to the end zone. After another Buffalo turn over, Dallas ran the football 11 straight times, breaking the will of the Buffalo defense. James Washington should have gotten the MVP, because he put on a clinic on defense that day. He did more than Larry Brown two years later when Dallas played Pittsburgh in Super Bowl 30.
I despise Dallas like a terminal illness, however you got to give credit where credit is due. This was a phenominal drive by Emmit Smith and The O Line!!!!

Gregory Alan Bailey Really it was a bit surprising the Bills got this far considering their efense during the regular season was really suspect (27th of 28 in the NFL). Offense really carried them. Manu Ginobilis Bald Spot Exactly! Up until his fumble on the 3rd play of the 2nd half of this Super Bowl, he had a little over 80 total yards against a fast Dallas defense. He doesn't fumble, the Bills continue to wear down the Dallas defense,Dallas is forced to start throwing the ball more instead of relying on Emmett, the Bills score more and they win this Super Bowl. ***** WRONG!!!!!! Emmitt Smith is a complete running back and a complete football player. He is a devastating pass blocker who can pick up blitzes and pass protects for Troy Aikman his quarterback. Not to mention that he is an excellent pass receiver out of the backfield that can pose as a multidimensional threat. An outstanding downhill runner after the cut, possesses great peripheral vision being able to run over, through, around and by you if need be, stiff arming defenders while gaining tough yards after contact having the ability to break tackles and continuously wear the defence down. A consistent, durable and dependable running back who plays every down in every situation that can always come through in the clutch especially in the postseason. Deceptively elusive and quick having the patience, balance with nifty footwork being able to utilize and maximize his abilities to the fullest. Barry Sanders was taken out of third downs and blocking situations because he is unreliable in short yardage and he is not an astute pass blocker making him a liability and that is one of the weaknesses to Barry's game. Therefore Barry Sanders will cost his team by putting them in long yardage situations making it easier for them to defend the run because of his constant cutting back against the grain forcing the offensive line to block longer than necessary.
Who is going be the Emmitt Thomas this Superbowl? I really wished the Bills were sent to LA not the RAMS or another worthy franchise. Buffalo is a dump and full of low lifes who can not afford NFL ticket prices.
