I think the main problem with these cars transmissions is they’re not getting enough cooling. My car (Escalade 2008) transmission temperature can reach easily to 120 Celsius (248 Fahrenheit). And guess what, the transmission failed after 150k miles. I reinstalled a new transmission with an external transmission cooler and now it is working just fine.

I had a 99 Yukon Denali, which was virtually the same as the 1st gen. Escalade. The transmission went out at 175K miles. At the time, a local shop wanted $2400 to replace it. Times were tough, so I bought a "How to rebuild" DVD and a rebuild kit. Saved myself almost 2K and I know it was done right. Sold the truck with 255K miles and got an 06 Escalade to replace it. Transmission started slipping 2 years ago at 185K miles. Dusted off the o'le DVD. Best $20 I ever spent! I'm now at 215K miles.

I have a 2007 with just over 179K miles (70-80k of those are mine) and have to say that barring climate related issues with the PVC hoses in the desert it has been pretty reliable. The LS engine just goes. Note: the issue that exist with DoD (Displacement on Demand) or AFM (Active Fuel Management) isn't so much oil consumption as much as it is that the spring loaded lifters start to twist and destroy the camshaft (which then destroys other stuff). I never thought about the thermal issue due to AFM - good call out!

I remember when I ordered my Ford 1975 Mustang II hatchback with my fathers Ford employee discount.
302 V8 fully loaded with eight track, beautiful Copper color for $5,500. My dad thought I was nuts paying that much. It handled wonderful on the highway but only 12 mpg. Gas in Michigan was 49 cents a gallon. Unfortunately the summer of 1979 my bride of six months wanted the car with A/C and her drive was 3 miles round trip. Also working for Chrysler as a computer programmer at Dodge Main in Hamtramck, I was encouraged to own a Chrysler car and the new employee discount on a used executive car was great.
Then 1985 my wife explained that the baby car seat wouldn’t fit in a two door or rear hatchback. Great engine and I could do 90% of the maintenance and repairs. In 2023 it’s almost impossible to even get your hands in the engine. With the cost of buying a house and a car today is beyond the middle class.

Got my wife a 2011 Escalade ESV 2 years ago, with 130k miles. It has a super clean interior and a good body. We've put 15k miles on it. I bought it for 17k but put another 3k on it catching up the maintenance and fixing a handful of minor things. Plus a tuning to deactivate the AFM, for longevity in my case. It felt like a new truck when I drove it home from the mechanic. The front magnetic shocks were waring out this year so another 3k there. It can feel like a money pit at times, but I'm pretty happy with it. If I did it again, I'd probably get a suburban just for the 4x4 instead of the AWD. (We use it to tow our camper and sometimes it gets muddy).

My parents have a 2012 and 2011 ESV Platinum and EXT Platinum (can’t remember which one is which year), they bought them brand new back in 2011 and we still use them as our daily driver. They’ve got over 450000 km on them and I believe the only things that have gone wrong recently are the suspension a year ago and the window power electronics (the windows would close and open slower than it use to, maybe getting stuck?). Otherwise it had regular maintenance.
I think it may have had a couple more major services or repairs in the first 4 years (I was 10-14 and hadn’t payed much attention to the service work 😅), but in the last 6, just those 2 problems mentioned earlier. The engine runs fine and you can feel the acceleration from the >400hp.
Dad loves them. Family and friends still give compliments at how comfortable and cool our Escalades are, even 10 years later. Parents didn’t get the 2016 update since they weren’t much of an upgrade (and dad’s loved EXT model was removed), but is thinking of maybe getting the newer models (though EXT is still missing). But our Escalades are still holding up fine!

@@fixingitrightish Yeah and rust if you live in the wrong spot. Sehaj, you probably don't live around the great lakes. Michigan and surrounding states will eat cars. Especially GMs (except the properly made fglass body over real chassis-Corvette) and I don't need to mention that the LS v8s and V6s are the best swap motors along with Honda Ks.
Certain 90s Audis that were still "reasonable" to work on were what I rolled there because they were truly rust proof. And Audis were tanks in the 90s. Stay away from the V8s in any year tho. Stay pre direct injection. Gosh this new crap ruins everything. Advancing tech could make cooler cars, instead its making them worse.
Even though I'm dogging GM, I still acknowledge the LS motor and Corvette as great things and what does GM do? Discontinue LS and turn the Corvette into an EV Crossover. That is the pinnacle of removing masculinity from our society and woke ugly bimbo Mary Bara is just rubbing it in. When is somebody going to say enough already, just because you're a bull-dyke CEO who wants to ruin masculinity for men doesn't mean you get to destroy a nearly 70 year old national icon, go cool off somewhere.

Get a pre 2012 without all the excessive tech crap. All tech is unreliable and as tech becomes more than half the mass of the car, you won't be able to see any difference in reliability between brands like Honda/Toyota and the others anymore. Can't you all see that they're slowly weaning us onto a system like China where you're car won't start if your carbon footprint exceeds ALOTTMENT for the week. Make it a point to use cash for everything. Boycott 2015 and up cars. The market may never realize it, but if we valued cars only for how long and easily they will continue to facilitate our constitutional right to free movement, every 90s honda/toyota with a stick would be worth 3 million right now. Take a 2023 Escalade or a 2023 ANYTHING vs a 97 camry with a 5 speed. In the midst of nuclear war and recession, which one guarantees you get to work and the grocery for the next 10 years with no giant issues that are expensive and/or too complicated to do yourself. These newer Escalade's (the 2007 to 2014 generation) with the 6.2 L V8 engine, including active fuel management (AFM) and the six-speed automatic transmission have much better performance than these older (the 1999 to 2001 generation) ones without AFM. They are a lot more reliable, compared to the Lincoln Navigator. These Navigator's, especially the older ones (the 2005 and 2006 model) with the 5.4 L Triton 3-valve V8 engine and the six-speed automatic transmission had a lot of problems. So, this 2011 Cadillac Escalade ESV is the best vehicle in the used market, if you are planning to or need to buy a large SUV with an extended wheelbase. Anyway, these large SUV's and large pick-up trucks are the best, safest vehicles to buy in the used market, because the value is not too high. Thank you very much and have a great first week of 2023.
