  • Jason Isbell is coming under fire from the late Justin Townes Earle's widow after releasing "When We Were Close" from his latest album Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit "Weathervanes". Justin Townes Earle's widow is now speaking out for the first time against Jason Isbell releasing "When We Were Close" as it has had a 'traumatizing' impact and triggered a 'painful' response for Justin Townes Earle's widow, daughter and family following its release. Jason Isbell also recently made controversial comments on why he released the song, to which Justin Townes Earle's widow also slammed.

    As someone who found my 26-year-old dead on a bathroom floor of an overdose, I support the graphic lyrics of the song. The first time I heard "When We Were Close" those lines hit like a gut punch and brought tears to my eyes, but I felt understood. Addiction is ugly. Isbell knows that. JTE's widow's pain is valid. Losing a loved one to addiction is a special kind of grief. I'm sorry the song brings her pain. But the graphic nature of the song might move an addict to seek recovery.

      I believe Jason and Jenn have very different feelings about losing Justin. I did not see the song as cruel, but her pain is very personal. I believe Jason loved Justin, maybe they were not close at his death, but I think seeing anything less is sad for Jason and Justin.

    She's RIDICULOUS!!!! (JME) The easiest way to not be traumatized by lyrics that are clearly NOT specific to their family (those lyrics could apply to SOOOO MANY people dying from overdose) are to STOP FOLLOWING Jason's career... DON'T LISTEN TO HIS MUSIC! It's literally that simple!!! And as far as your daughter listening to his music, you're the Mom! Don't allow her to listen to it! Someday she'll be 18 and she can listen to whatever she wants to but until then, BE THE PARENT and tell her NO! Just ridiculous to assume lyrics are personal when they can apply to so many who've done the same thing.

      I mean, you can read my huge comment above. That basically tells the real truth about where she and Justin were at. They were Estranged too! not to mention she and Justin were separated at the time of his death and for probably about a year before that at least. The only real contact he had with her was to facilitate a relationship with his daughter, she totally portrayed the grieving widow and personally attacked me when she got his phone and saw that he and I had had a relationship in 2019 and we’re making plans to see each other in 2020 of course this was after his death though because it seems like she didn’t really care too much, until she had some kind of legacy to protect. I know way too much about the relationship and I went into enough up above, but this woman is a piece of work. At least Justin ‘s final year was spent mostly away from her. The fact she keeps harping about Jason’s song seems a ploy to get money or sympathy or attention and it’s just disgusting. Give it a rest Jenn

    It’s a great song by a great artist. JTE’s widow, from what I’ve read, seems kind of like an attention whore and toxic (supposedly she went after multiple people after JTE’s death and was really brutal about it). Jason has every right to write this song. He sees his life in JTE. They were friends and musicians. They were both married and had daughters. They were both addicts. I think the song is Jason’s reflection about how if fate could have swung another way and this tragedy could have befallen upon him.

    I don’t know how people are going to feel about this comment. But Justin and Jenn Marie were separated at the time of his passing. I was romantically involved with Justin in 2019 and had gone on tour with him and we were in constant contact after. He wanted me to come down to Nashville for Thanksgiving. And we were planning to hang out when he was on tour with Brian Fallon. But then Covid hit. They were separated at the time of his passing. He wanted me to visit him in April 2020 and he actually had a plane ticket to visit me in July 2020. But then he had to have surgery. Jenn Marie loves to rewrite history. She wasn’t even in the state when he died and a friend had to call for a welfare check on him. That’s actually public record . Any contact or time he had with her post 2019 was to facilitate a relationship with their daughter. I would not be saying any of this if she hadn’t come after me when he died. She said horrible things to me both publicly and privately. I understand her grief, but at the same time this is two weeks after his death and she’s lashing out at a woman he was involved with that she didn’t even know about until she got his phone after he passed. Jenn Marie has an ax to grind and wants recognition and money. I’m sure if Jason Isbell was giving her some profits off the song she would shut her mouth. I’m just so sick of her bitterness and her hypocrisy. And I also think the truth needs to be told about Jen Marie and Justin Townes Earle‘s relationship at the time of his death. They were not living together, and they had been separated for a year at that point not legally separated, but they had not been living together. And if he were still alive today, I’m sure they would be legally divorced by now. All of this is fact. And Jen Marie not admitting to the actual state of her relationship with Justin at the time of his death and making it seem like they were one big happy family, when so many people know that was not the case is really a grab for attention and money and sympathy. I also found it interesting that The article she did for Rolling Stone. Steve Earle had no part in, because he knew a lot of what she was saying was revisionist history at best. And all the profits for his tribute album went directly to Etta’s college bond. None of that money Jenn could touch and there’s a reason for that.

      I knew Justin from the days he was living over on Touhy, about a block from Loyola Park. We ran the streets together back then. A lot of what you're saying is true. He did say he and Jenn were having problems, I would say that was around Sept/Oct 2019. So I assume that's around the time you're talking. So for those wondering she isn't completely full of it, though there's def some bitter bitch shit going on here too. Jenn is doing a good job with his legacy, so deserves some credit. Marriage and a kid trumps your few months hanging out, and grief is grief. She lost more than you. But I hear what you're saying, I just don't get why you're saying it. You sound respectable, so I suspect airing shit out is beneath you.

Streisand Effect: I never even would have heard this song if it weren’t for the drama. Let it silently fade into obscurity like most songs do if they aren’t happy with it. Or just bring more attention to it like they are now…

      I think she is hoping to bring attention to her late husband since Isbell was being vague about who it is about. So I don't think she was her trying to censor Isbell but rather force him to make a statement and acknowledge the song is about Justin Townes Earle.

    As someone who doesn't listen to current "country" (though I know a lot of Townes Van Zandt and some Steve Earle) I wasn't aware of either of these artists other than by name. Personally I find it absurd that Isbell is being attacked in the manner and ferocity that he is over this issue. I found the song to be heartfelt and true. No, it wasn't sugar coated, it was honest. I understand Earle's widow's feelings. Isbell had his own substance issues and he dealt with them and is there for his family. Earle is not. Accuse me of being judgmental. It's difficult not to honestly be.

    Isbell was on Marc Maron's postcast before Justin's passing and he said their falling out was because he (Isbell) started going out with JTE's ex-girlfriend. Isbell was a bad friend to Justin and is exploiting his death. I am sure if Isbell offered to help Justin's Widow and daughter even just financially this dispute wouldn't have happened but he choose to deliberately not mention Justin by name thus avoiding the need to pay his estate. My only hope is this song brings attention to Justin Townes Earle's underrated music and talent.

    • @wonder_of_it_all
      @wonder_of_it_all 19 дней назад +2

      "Isbell started going out with JTE's ex-girlfriend." That is completely incorrect. Isbell had hired JTE's girlfriend as a roadie. When they broke up, JTE wanted Isbell to fire her and he refused. That is a very different situation to the one you described. Maybe there's other details about that situation we don't know but JTE comes off looking like the asshole IMO. I also imagine Isbell being sober and JTE being in active addiction didn't help their relationship. At a certain point, you have to cut your losses and protect yourself.
      I don't think Jason has handled the fallout in the best way but he wrote a song about a former friend and his feelings. Totally valid. He doesn't owe anyone a thing for that.

      Isbell doesn’t owe anyone anything. He never specifically names anyone in the song, in fact, if you read the lyrics he is actually contemplating with the fact that his once dear friend was taken before him. “Why wasn’t I?” he asks. Nobody points fingers at Dave Grohl when the Foos write an entire album about the loss of their drummer. But Isbell does it and now apparently he’s a villain.

      Well, she wasn’t a grieving widow. They were separated at the time of his death and for a year before that. I know because I was romantically involved with him and I know everything that went down. They weren’t living together since mid 2019 and honestly, I probably would keep my mouth shut about this if she hadn’t personally attacked me publicly and privately through DM‘s after his death saying really unfair things that were not true and then when I hit her back with some facts, she totally backed off. I understand her being upset and how he can’t be around for his daughter. But a lot of us were heartbroken when he died. And this anger and vitriol , she’s been casting at anyone she views as an enemy has got to stop and I’m sure if Jason Isbell was giving her a cut of what he’s making from the song she would shut her trap. She needs counseling. She doesn’t need to be on a public platform still talking about this song almost a year after it was released.

I swear that dude is deranged on a different level to release a song like that that is clearly a hard jab & meant to degrade Earle. Same here. And I was a heroin addict for almost a decade until May 2013. no kids, fortunately. I don't go around acting like I am better than drug and alcohol addicts because I was saved only through Divine Intervention. i overdosed multiple times and once woke up lying on the bathroom floor of the house at 7am while my ex wife was sleeping in the bedroom next to the bathroom. tourniquet was even still around my arm. I had fortunately rolled over on to my side at some point and there was, uhhhh, half- digested food I had eaten the night before all over the floor. i tried to stand up and had to resort to crawling to get back in my bed before my ex woke up. it was so terrifying to me that she may have been screwed up with PTSD had she found me. I remember nothing of that night beyond going in to the bathroom after she had gone to bed and pushing that plunger on that hypo. next thing I knew, sunrise was coming thru the bathroom window. very scary. sorry for the long story.
