COMBI BOILER PLATE HEAT EXCHANGER REPLACEMENT FOR HOT WATER
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 4 дек 2024
- Today I show you hot to replace a combi boiler plate heat exchanger plus go through the plumber thought processes and tests to prove it had failed.
So this plate heat exchanger has failed because the pressure of the boiler kept rising, indicating that the separation between hot water and heating system water had been compromised. This can only really happen in the heat exchanger. So I'll show you a few tests I've done to prove it. Then change the heat exchanger, then take the old one back to the shed to cut it in half and prove it. I'll also talk about descaling if your hot water pressure has got low.

Great work my good friend have a good weekend mate
You must be the only plumber in the world who would do this. Every plumber everywhere would recommend a new boiler.
Haha! Thanks man.
Nice one Mr Colin Furze, I don't know what you made but I liked it.
🤣
Brave man using the boiler isolation valve's
Drop em in a sonic bath for a few hours amazing what comes out !!
Thanks James. I was today years old when I realised external boilers were a thing.
Yeah, you can get Rinnai water heaters on gas that can be externally fitted...they kind of look like a mix between the tankard build and balanced flue terminal
Good tips for pressure testing the expansion vessel😀
Sorry I wrote that before hearing the song at the end. Great Vid James👍
Thanks Jimmy, great video and Boi Dat Hoodie is Proper Bo I tell thee!
Take a sip of tea everytime he says pressure vessel instead of heat exchanger. ☕😄
Great vid and very interesting James, I have never seen inside of a car radiator but I imagine it’s a very similar method. Great to see inside he though as it gives you a good understanding of how it works. SEND
I love the fact the Ale Army use ‘Send’ mate!
@@plumberparts £100, how much is parts? And how much labour?
a fine tip felt pen works if your phone isnt handy for marking the pressure gauge
I live for these video uploads cheers James 👌
A video on external boilers would be good. Would have thought they are prone to many more issues being exposed to the British elements, but must be a reason or two why you would have them. Interesting video, especially seeing it cut open!
Yet another great video. Just wondering why you wouldn't give the system a flush, or at least a full drain down, then refill? It does look like the system is fairly dirty. But I would bow to your greater knowledge if you can show a newby why you didn't drain down, or was it just to get the PHE changed? Looking forward to your comment(s). Thanks in advance.
A most exellent video sir, spit on
11:57 "expansion vessel" :-)
"why I think it's failed"

Grant have change those washers now much easier to fit
Question? I have oil fired central heating with a water cylinder for hot water it is time for me to renew the boiler it is about 25 years old now. Would you advise getting a Combi Boiler instead of using a hot water cylinder, in the summer I have to use the emersion to heat the water. Are Combi Boilers Reliable?? Robert
Great video as always mate, u just got a gift for being funny and educational at the same time which isn’t easy to do “Might be lucky and go in both holes” 🤣🤣👌👏👏
Can you used silicone if you don't have the gaskets
Great video mate😎
If a ceramic heating element is placed on the heat exchanger would it heat the heating and then not have to use gas?
People who complain about a £100 heat exchanger, I need to ask them to make it themselves and see it really should cost way more :)
What are the pros and cons of an external combi boiler?
Pro :possibly less noise (depending on location) and smell and more space for the customer. Ventilation automaticity provided just make sure some nutter doesn’t build a shelter over it, always fit to MIs. Cons: we live in Britain, you gonna get piss wet for any maintenance calls if it isn’t good weather, not to mention servicing in the winter.
I'm surprised the new plate exchanger didn't come with new top hat washers ? direct from Grant
Re limescale: I'm planning to put a couple of isolated tee's below my combi boiler, so I can flush it through with vinegar every year or so - without having to dismantle anything, or wait until it actually starts to give up the ghost...
If you have the space under the boiler, have a look at the scale reducers, basically look like a chrome pipe section. They do them pretty much anywhere including Screwfix
Nice one, just what I needed right now! Thank you good man
What about crossover in the diverter valve
Same water same pressure !!
BIG Thank you for the video...!!
Had to carry-out exactly this on our Retro Exertnal 2008 Grant Vortex 21 in deepest darkest North Cornwall.... FYI try some St.Austell Ale "Hicks"... In fact I'll buy you one should you ever venture near the North Kernow Coast. 👍
Really really informative video for a D.I.Y-eeeer.
Not a job I would tackle as I have a reliable plumper, but have spotted a crud build up on the connections in and out. Also a few times a year the pressure drops, but we can go months and months (March-August) without any pressure drops. Are there any failure modes on these exchanger that can result in pressure drop? We have checked all the usual things (leaks etc). I have the same Grant boiler as the one you have shown, but installed in the house. Love the effort and production quality you put into your videos - you deserve all the success mate!
Probably losing pressure from an auto air vent if no other leaks
@@markdenney3333 thank you for replying - no other leaks detected (I’ve had floor boards up, etc). All the best.
Great video
I like your videos
Great video, I have a combination boiler and the heat exchanger is only about a third of the depth of the one you took off, it's rated at 21-27kw. I would like to install a bigger heat exchanger, I have room in the cabinet. Flow rate at the hot tap is poor at best and I'm thinking that a larger heat exchanger would help to improve flow rate. What do you think.
Andy.
Forgive the possible stupid question but why would you have an external fitted boiler ?
Wouldn't exposure to elements cause lessened efficiency & increased maintenance / replacement parts costs & frequency?
Judging by the ease if access, a plumber talked them into it.
Oil fired boulders are big units, about the same size of a washing machine/cooker (60cm deep etc), so some homes simply do not have the space, ours is located in our hall way/entrance. I will be relocating, Into the garage (other side of the wall), once the garage is built.
@@AcheForWake thanks for that ... Sorry assumed it was a gas fired boiler ....
Thank you👍👍🇬🇧😎
Spot on
Didn’t catch name of your other YT Chanel, can you provide a link please?
What’s the difference between a heat exchanger and an expansion vessel?
A heat ex transfers the heat from the heating side to heat up the hot water.
An expansion vessel takes up the expansion when the heating circuit heats up and there’s an increase in pressure. As it cools and contracts the pressure returns back to normal.
Lovely jubby, why have you got a cement mixer in your garage? Are you a builder on the weekend? Hold tight!
What type of metal is inside of heat exchanger, someone?
How do you re fill the heater store tank / loop (the larger hoses coming off the h/e)?
How do you join the ale army?
Charlie sent me!
Used to work on the oil boilers, too many washers on them nowadays, drip drip drip, bring back the mysons lol
Old school!
The hot water on my kitchen and bathroom taps runs for few seconds and goes cold but the hot water on my shower works fine. What might be the cause?
One good vid
He changed probably the easiest plate heat exchanger on the planet.
Have you changed one before? They are not as easy they look
I have had a glow worm combi boiler installed recently only months old and when it's running on the thermostat and the boiler calls for gas and stops calling for gas there is a clicking noise that's getting a lot louder. I don't know much about boilers but believe that it could be the heat exchange. Any advice would be much appreciated.
Does your hot water work still, the clicking will be the boiler trying to ignite, if your hot water isn't working either then I would say that the gas isn't getting there somehow, had a similar problem on my boiler, hope that helps 👍
Sorry just a quick one if if any one in the No is looking
If my pressure is rising
Would I need a new heat exchanger or if I got it of and cleaned it would that work for a while until I got a plumber to put a new one on iv had it half of but can’t undo a blooming nut thank you 🙈👍
I have no idea why he is running the boiler to check this as if your pressure rises because of the plate heat exchanger it is because one or more of the plates has a hole in it & mains water is creeping into the system side increasing your pressure. The boiler doesn't need to be hot for this to happen. If this is the case you will need a new heat exchanger. Worth noting if the pressure rises only when it's on, it's more likely a problem with the pressure vessel. There's a schraider valve (like on a tyre) on it. If you press it in & no air comes out it will need pumping up to 1 bar (usually) with a foot pump. If a lot of water comes out you need a new vessle.
How do I drain the hot water out of the vessel which is beside the boiler iv connected hose at the bottom and opened it ,,, and opened the taps inside the house but no water drains out 🙈 plus iv got a nut on the heat exchanger which won’t move one minuscule probably no one will see this but will check in the morning btw this is the only vid on the entire net that’s made any cense
Hope this make cense 🙈
Bonjour 👍💯
Every grant in the world that’s over 3 years has leaking fittings on the heat ex 😂,
Another note on these boiler nearly all installs will have undersized vessels and this puts so much stress on all joints and
Auto air vents
@plumberparts what would be the issue if my combi boiler doesn't fire up turning hot taps on? I have hot water if I turn the heating on but not otherwise. I was thinking diverter valve but not sure that would cause the boiler not to fire up on request. Cheers
Be likely the diverter valve or hall sensor. The hall sensor detects flow (tap being opened) which signals the diverter valve to shift across to hot water.
@@MrCODGLITCHER1234 Cheers dude, it was indeed the divertor valve, just rebuilt the insides and all good.
You need some bronze telfon hat washers ! Instead of the fibre washers.
Enjoy your Pint (Pints) of Ale.😂😂😂😂
Shouldn't you drop the pressure out of the system before commencing.
He did... through the PRV (shouldn't really do it through prv though.)
Dont you just love the pump design on them grants 🙄
Personally I advise against having any combi boiler ever...but especially an oil one!
@@plumberparts worked mainly on oil for 5 year before i started my own business and the cursing involved with parts like that being changed 😂
@@plumberparts I hate combis too but they are my biggest earner on breakdowns. Top tip for you carry some clingfilm for covering pumps/components etc, works for me ;-)
That’s a great idea!
you mean heat exchanger James lol
Expansion vessel lol !! Slow the commentary down ☺
👍🤓👍
Great informative vid, but please lose that annoying guitar music.
I like annoying guitar??
