    As part of my training I've been invited out on a job this week: suspected diverter valve issue. What better way to learn about this part than from your clear, informative videos. Seventeen minutes well spent here 👍
    I can now join the engineer with a lot more confidence thanks to this nice little insight

    Good Allen. May I add to simplify, as some comments indicate many did not get the gist of it.
    *On a Plate Heat Exchanger combi, which Allen is talking about:*
    ♦ The boiler has a main gas burner heat exchanger that produces heat and a separate DHW (hot water) plate heat exchanger that transfers heat to the cold incoming mains water, heating it _instantly;_
    ♦ The boiler's main gas burner heat exchanger that produces heat;
    ♦ A pump pumps heat from this heat exchanger to the radiators;
    ♦ When DHW (hot water) is called by opening a tap, a flow switch is activated indicating flow on the hot water pipe circuit;
    ♦ A _three-way_ diverter valve moves to circulate the heated water from the radiators to circulate only inside the boiler casing;
    ♦ The heated water is directed to a highly efficient DHW plate heat exchanger;
    ♦ The plate heat exchanger has cold fresh water running though one end and hot system water from the main gas burner heat exchanger running through the other. The two waters do not meet, merely transferring heat from the hot system water to the cold fresh water;
    ♦ The plate heat exchanger heats incoming cold fresh water *Instantly* to a temperature suitable for domestic use;
    ♦ This will produce hot water infinitely, called _infinitely continuous,_ not running out of hot water;
    ♦ When the hot water tap is turned off, the flow switch indicates that DHW is no longer called for;
    ♦ The three-way valve moves to allow water to be pumped to radiators;
    *On an integrated gas heat exchanger/DHW heat exchanger:*
    ♦ The boiler has a main gas burner heat exchanger that produces heat with a DHW (hot water) heat exchanger integrated, which may be a long winding tube inside the main gas burner heat exchanger;
    ♦ A pump pumps heat from the main gas burner heat exchanger to the radiators;
    ♦ When DHW (hot water) is called by opening a tap, a flow switch is activated indicating flow on the hot water pipe circuit;
    ♦ The pump is deenergised preventing water from running to the radiators, while bringing in the gas burner, if it is not already activated.;
    ♦ The DHW heat exchanger heats incoming cold fresh water *Instantly* to a temperature suitable for domestic use;
    ♦ This will produce hot water infinitely, called _infinitely continuous;_
    ♦ When the hot water tap is turned off, the flow switch indicates that DHW is no longer called for;
    ♦ The pump is activated pumping heat to the radiators, if the control system demands heat to the radiators;

    Allan, excellent video the way you described make me very attentive as well as interested . I was searching for the clue for our boiler problem which started after fault in fill in loop stop function. Pressure in the boiler increased to 3BAR and safety valved throw water on the out side wall. Engineer visited, due to the displayed error code of the boiler he changed the pump, but boiler still make noises and pressure goes up and down which noticeable from the pressure gauge. As you briefly explained that might be faulty hot plate causing this issue due to internal damage. Funny thing is that boiler work about 50% of the fully capability. Hot water seems fine but when heating kick in than it become problematic.
    I guess hot plate may be damaged internally during this pressure surge. Radiator make funny noises due to water movement. Am I right to assume hot plate causing this problem? please give your expert opinion.

    Hi I just installed a Combi Boiler. As a housewife, I cannot understand these technical things 😉. In terms of saving energy bill, should I turn the DHW "off or auto" on the thermostat? Right now for heating, auto is set and timer is on to heat up the rooms. But not sure about hot water? We use "electric shower" every day. Since we are not "heavy hot water users", I turn it to "off" position, that means "hot water on demand", right? However, what if I turn to "auto" for both: once heating heats the house, water will also be heated up?! My question is: which ways can save money? Is it "turn off - hot water on demand" or "turn auto - fuel both heating and cold water at the same time"? Thanks in advance! ☺️

    Hi Allen, just an ask have a Rental property with a Grant Kerosene Combi Boiler and the System pressure was dropping off on same due to the likes of some old central heating Rad connections are very slightly leaking plus also the TRV spindles, causing things to go south with the system pressure ... the ,'Old School" heating Engineer just looked at same, serviced the Boiler,Power flushed the system filled with Corrosion Inhibiter and system Leak seal in and went down the route of fitting Auto Fill Pressure reducing station fitting two certified N/R Check Valves on same, One before the Reducing station and one after same, and left same, the incoming water ,"LIVE" to maintain a Bleed into the system if needed and tuned same to maintain a Static incoming pressure of 1Bar when the System was, "Stone Cold"... He also put in an Extra Large Expansion Vessel adjacent to the Boiler connected to the Heating system saying it would help with the reducing of Pressure within the System seems to calm things down, as ramps up to at most when fully running to just 1.6 Bar... he said that the "In Cabinet" Pressure Vessel was just on the Margin of what should be in there, bearing in mind the serious Number of oversized Rads he said were installed in the house, calling for Heat... allied with the Volume of water in same, he said it was as well have a good degree of safety in there as a Buffer... or just whenever maybe the "In Cabinet" pressure Valve would Fail, he's coming back Next summer for the next Annual Service and promised to replace that same as a matter of course as it's about Ten years old.....................My question Allen is although there's supposed to be a Hard disconnect Off the Mains... incase of a Water Outage or reduced mains pressure, and then back pressure allowing chemicals to enter the mains would this System... would this set up classed as Minor Sin on his part rather than really a bit of Accidental Bad Practice...Really Great and informative Upload...

    Hi Allen,
    Great video. Does the diverter valve cartridge unscrew from the valve like the one you had in the video? I have a Main Combi Eco 25 and wondered if it will come apart. Also, could you recommend a tool to take it apart?
    thank you

    Thanks you Allen,
    I enjoyed seeing inside diverter valve, that's a first for me.
    Would really like to know more about the sequence on how the boiler fires up, from start to finish..
    (Flow switch, pump proving, fan to ignition please)
    I did the Baxi 3 day fault finding course but to have that content on a video I could play back would be amazing.
    Thank you for your videos and good work!

    Hi mate,
    My brother’s house just had Baxi 830 installed but the engineer disconnected the mechanical thermostat at the doorway and told him to that he needs to have the wireless Hive installed. But at this moment, he doesn’t have the thermostat installed and so he has to use the dial set to minimum at the boiler to stop flame but the sign of radiator on the display at the boiler is still flashing. Does it mean the pump of boiler is still working because I could still hear the noise of working from the boiler? Would the pump stop after a period of time? Do you know how long would the pump be stopped? If my brother does not install the thermostat forever, would it make any damage or harm to the boiler? Would it reduce the life time of the boiler?
    Thanks

    Excellent video on understanding how combi boiler works 👍🏻
    I have no hot water, heating is fine.. Real saga going on at moment 😥 I pay for BG homecare, Ravenheat RSF 820/20 combi.
    2 B.G. service engineers sent, both said can't touch boiler if there's something wrong. 🙀
    This is new, they always helped before.. Not qualified to help perhaps?
    ~ Finally the ' engineer ' visits, doesn't check why my boiler won't fire up when hot water is called for!
    Doesn't open the folding down access panel >Tried & didn't know how! 🙀 Decided within 5minutes I must need new 3-way divertor valve.
    ~ Thing is, my hot water isn't going to radiators like he said,, boiler not firing for hot water!
    Told me take 3weeks & they maybe can't get this part at all, hinting I will need buy new boiler! 😥
    I'm sure it's electrical sensor like you showed? Looked & I can't see 1 like yours, mine is an older, but reliable boiler.
    ♡ Please give me your opinion on the fault, of untrained 'engineers' , possible electrical sensor,, not this valve that they won't be able to source.
    I feel a fool for paying such sums of money, so long, for their " home care " , for peace of mind.💜🐱♏🌲🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

      try to find on google your boiler model name and add 'service manual'. if you find it, should have pictures how to take apart the sensor, so you find where it is and how it looks like.

    • @suzycat2026
      @suzycat2026 3 года назад

      Thanks for answering @@nilsfrahm1323 🤗 They changed divertor valve, then it wouldn't start! What a saga!
      ~ It turned out the " real engineer" who came to fix it, after 3weeks ,, was going to give up, until I showed him the original manual !
      He admitted he put wires back the wrong way to electric box inside it,, thinking it wouldn't matter!
      They all put me thru so much stress , I feel so stupid paying this monthly fee of £45 for "peace of mind" for 20years..
      ~ They should replace boiler if they break it, then cant fix it >> No? Still havn't had my annual service - they r a total waste of time!
      Appreciate your input on what I should do.. Just cancel the expensive homecare I've paid since I bought boiler.
      Or insist on complaint procedure & replacement ?

    Great vid, helped a lot. So the pump is activated by the room stat or the hot water flow sensor, are they also both connected to the diverter valve?

    Hi Allen. My grandmother is having a boiler fitted under the eco scheme and is paying a contribution towards it. Can you please comment on which would be better option from Worcester greenstar vs Ideal Logic? Essentially, I'd like to have the easiest access to the plate heat exchanger and don't know which is easiest from the two boilers.

    Allen , could explain what the fault could be if when the shower in the house is run but then the radiators go cold . It does the same with the hot water taps .Is this a boiler problem or a water pressure problem? Ti a of a solution

    Nice video, when talking about diverter valves, how the cartridge moves up and down, is it not usually that when the cartridge moves up it goes to the plate heat exchange and when it moves down because of the pin it goes to CH. Or is this not the common way they work?
