Awesome Tom! This is really going to help make someone’s recordings better. And thanks for the shout out to my channel. It means a lot coming from you!
I've used one of these dummy plugs for years on my headless Mac mini that I use as a video storage device so that when I remote in, the screen resolution is correct.
Neat tool. I actually bought an app (can’t remember the name) to change screen size then realized I could do it in the Mac display settings. You have to get used to everything being bigger but definitely works.
Love it! Thanks for sharing. I’m going to pick up a set. I currently use OBS when I record on my PC. I’m curious to hear what you and others are using on PC and Mac when you record your screen.
I like to record in 4K and I’ve had trouble getting it the right resolution AND being big enough for me to actually read 😁 Plus changing settings is a pain and I like how quick this is!
@@tombuck Totally get you, Tom. Keep up the excellent work, videos, podcasts!! Love to watch & hear! Thanks for answering and sorry for the dumb question. 🙈❤
Not a dumb question at all! I'm sure there are ways to do it natively, but I just couldn't figure it out and when I realized these were super simple AND super cheap, it was a no brainer.
hahaha. I both love this and also think about how I use OBS to do all screen recording which you just preset to 1920x1080 and adjust the sources in OBS rather than needing something else to do it. But this is brilliant.
You can also do the same thing by using airplay to your apple tv (or even some tv's have built in support for airplay). As long as you are sending your desktop to an external display that is 16:9, you can use those settings to have your mac desktop be in 16:9.
Been using these for years with headless servers. I carry one in my EDC bag. If you cannot give up the HDMI port they make them for Thunderbolt, USB-C and DisplayPort too. Smart video TB. We use this in Ecamm to get presentations to act right when they are finicky 🤙🏽 Also handy to speed up Remote Desktop or Screenshare from a second machine on your network
Windows just lets you change your resolution, even not native aspect ratios. I have a surface pro 7 which is not 16:9 and I can just set a 16:9 resolution on it, I'll have black borders on the top and bottom, but no need to buy anything
I have a legitimate question! For Sony Full Frame & apsc, WHAT settings do I need for my camera’s to focus on my face rather than the broadcast mic that I’m using?! This is sooo frustrating! I’ve gotten a really funny couple takes, that were unusable due to me being very out of focus, but my mic is crispy and sharp.. hate this lol
Doesn't OBS allow you to record at specific resolutions regardless of your screen, and also capture specific parts? I think it does. Though I admit I have no idea if OBS is even available on the macOS. Regardless, your solution is cool and informative, thank you for sharing.
This is not gonna be my problem if I have a 16:9 widescreen display, Because my laptop does come with that. (And using Windows 11) 😅 I'm wonder if it's gonna work with OBS too, Maybe. =) 😊
Hi Tom, your channel I love so much I always looking forward to new Videos released by you! Regarding the HDMI dummy can I screen-record a TV-Show which is been recorded here in Germany by me on a schedule from „MagentaTV“ Stream which sits in the respective cloud of Magenta-TV from a software called: „Audials One Edition 2024“ with this HDMI Dummy? Thank you!
The only way to really know is to try! In theory, yes, it should work, but some streaming services have blocks for recording/outputs/etc. Thank you for the kind words!
At least on my MacBook, no. If it doesn't detect that the feed is going somewhere it ignores the HDMI cable. The adapter somehow tricks the computer into thinking that it IS sending a feed out.
Yes, but it becomes pretty tough to work with in my experience because if your screen is high resolution, it seems like you either end up stuck with really big or really tiny icons/text/etc. This is just so quick and easy and the way it adapts the screen to 16 x 9 is still really easy to work with.
Awesome Tom! This is really going to help make someone’s recordings better. And thanks for the shout out to my channel. It means a lot coming from you!
Thanks for putting these awesome things on my radar in the first place!

You may be referring to a Mac app called Display Menu
I legit ran into this issue about 5 days ago when screen recording Audacity and Logic Pro X for a Tiktok video. You are right on time Tom. Thanks!
It’s a lifesaver for sure.
Love it! Thanks for sharing. I’m going to pick up a set.
I currently use OBS when I record on my PC.
I’m curious to hear what you and others are using on PC and Mac when you record your screen.
Great find. Thank you, Tom.
That’s solid! Thx for sharing!
Thank you for fully explaining them. I never understood a good use case for them until now.
They definitely seem a bit pointless at first 😁
That is brilliant. I have been struggling with aspect ratios for awhile on my screen recordings.
It really makes things easy! I use it constantly!
That is super cool, thanks Tom
One of my favorite tricks!
WHAT. This is actually wildly creative. Nice work Tom.
Nice, Tom! 👍 Any reason why not just changing the Mac‘s screen resolution to 1920x1080 for the time of the web page screen recording? 😳

I see Tom Buck's video, I upvote it. I am a simple man :) Thanks, Tom.
I appreciate this. 🙏
This is fantastic!
Thanks for the awesome tip, just purchased!
This is so simple but genius. love it!
It's always so satisfying when you find something simple and helpful like this.
Thanks a lot. Ordered one while watching.
Totally worth it! We have them stashed all over the house now 😁
This is exactly what I needed, thanks Tom!
Glad to help! It’s been such a timesaver for both Heather and myself.
Interesting! Thanks a lot
Thank you!!!
This has been bugging me so much, all these days!
Great tip, Tom. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Brilliant!!!
Super cool I might have to get one now!
They're so cheap it's definitely worth it!
Keep on Buck’n! 😅

Didn't know they made them for other ports, that's awesome!
How does this help with remote desktop?
@@bagorolin the Mac see's an extra monitor and thusly engages the GPU cores. Pretty sure PCs are same/similar
Thanks Tom! I gotta get a couple of those! Great trick!
Nice! I always keep one in my bag and we have some strategically placed throughout the house 😁

You should go teach digital media in international schools! Great opportunity!

@@tombuck Hello Tom regarding to the above-mentioned software or should I rather use „OBS-Studio“? Thank you for your honest opinion!
Humm this seems like a MacOSX issue only. I can set my resolution on a PC to whatever I want so long as the screen can support it.
Will THESE work with PC?
I don't see why not, but the initial settings to change might be slightly different.
You can't just plug in an HDMI cable that's not hooked up to anything?
At least on my MacBook, no. If it doesn't detect that the feed is going somewhere it ignores the HDMI cable. The adapter somehow tricks the computer into thinking that it IS sending a feed out.
Can't you just change your resolution?
Yes, but it becomes pretty tough to work with in my experience because if your screen is high resolution, it seems like you either end up stuck with really big or really tiny icons/text/etc. This is just so quick and easy and the way it adapts the screen to 16 x 9 is still really easy to work with.

Tom! Why'd you delete my helpful comment? Not cool. Unsubscribed.
I didn't see any comment from you Chris?
