I wanted to be a Tech Support for my school district that I grew up into and this be an excellent idea to do Zoom Setups for teachers! I was actually inspired by TechSource for desk setup now Zoom setups is actually next level. I even got one for my own because I've been doing interviews and meetings through Zoom! I think all Tech Supports in schools should work on projects like this to help support teachers who are teaching from home and us Tech Support guys can come to their house and setup their Zoom setups. Tom. I work in the education field, but I am not an educator. I have worked with literally thousands of educators, and I have to tell you, that you are one of those special people who were made for teaching. You naturally engage with viewers/students, and could teach anyone virtually any subject. Keep up the great work.
I have a full respect for teachers. I honestly believe they should be paid more since they are helping build our future. Although college tuition is going up by 25% (way more than 2% inflation), I have a feeling teachers are not being paid in proportion to those costs unfortunately.
It’s tough, but I appreciate your support! I’m grateful to be in an area that pays above average for teachers, but it’s still not what the private sector would offer.
College tuition going up that high is also the reason that people are teaching themselves and not bothering with wasting time and money there. More and more companies are hiring without college degrees, students who haven’t gone to college generally show greater effort and work ethic, not to mention that self teaching means that you can go at your own pace and not be as stressed. Most people who self teach are teens which means by the time they exit high-school they will be far more prepared than people who go off to college.
I feel for the teachers right now. My wife is a teacher and she is also taking her Master classes right now. Her school meets in person but she has to have Zoom open to teach to her students who are quarantined. Yesterday she was on Zoom teaching all day. Got home just in time to get on zoom for her masters classes! I admire teachers hard work!
this over the top.99% teachers in the world could not afford that or even have this paraphelia at their work. but, nvrtheless, it's nice to see this setup..kinda dream come true.
Really cool to see that a teacher's putting in this amount of effort. I'm no longer a student, but I've had my fair share of online classes where you can't see the professor because their camera's wack or their lighting is nonexistent, or just their bitrate/internet speed isn't good enough. Super cool that the school's allowed you to nab some of the gear to make things easier as well.
Thank you! We did have a staff meeting this morning where one of the other teacher's webcam was pointed mostly at the ceiling with only the top of her forehead visible, so I can only imagine what class time must be like. 😬
Thank you! I really appreciate this. It's absolutely exhausting and overwhelming at times, but remember how much of an impact it can have on one person is a big deal.
These are the teachers that make school worth while, I would absolutely love just staring at the little details during zoom calls if it looked like this
Tom, we are _so_ jealous of the students in your school. How lucky to have such a superb passionate and enthusiastic teacher. Great video as always. Definitely copying some of your setup. 😍
Running the second macbook into your ATEM Mini is so smart honestly. I've struggled using videos while teaching over zoom because of quality issues and never thought about running a second laptop in as an HDMI video source. Thanks!
Fellow teacher-RUclipsr here; I’ve also been fortunate enough to turn my RUclips studio into a remote teaching space. I’ve been on the fence about the Atem but this video may just have helped me decide that it’s worth it. Really awesome setup you’re working with both at work and at home.
The ATEM is a godsend for online teaching! Just be sure to check out the “Pro” version since it seems like most people lean towards that (I didn’t need it though). Good luck! 👍
Great work explaining in your videos. Been watching for a while and always find you keep it moving, entertaining, and educational all at once. Refreshing on youtube. I watch a lot of camera channels. You are my favorite. Also, you have helped me with my journey online and YT.
I wish my professors took even a portion of the interest you do in creating an engaging and refined virtual classroom. You're doing your students a great service
You should teach teachers how to do this. Bravo to a teacher that finds ways to get kids asking questions before they do any teaching! This is an educator. I wish you were my kids teacher!
Tom, I went to thank you for all you do with the passion and enthusiasm you invest in your students and your RUclips followers. You are so gifted and fun with the way you connect and engage your audience! I was an instructor with a Military Leadership School at Fort Carson, Colorado from 1998-2013. Our "Distance Learning Classrooms" were cutting edge for the time. We had two-way audio/video between students and instructors that were linked to other Classrooms throughout the Nation. Seeing how this technology has advanced and evolved through the recent years has re-ignited my interest in getting back into teaching after watching so many of your RUclips video's in particular! I'm moving forward with this and starting to piece together my "hobby" home studio (for now) to explore where this might take me in the near future. I love all your videos!
Thank you so much Dale! It really makes my day to read this. It's really wild to see how things have changed over the years, and heck, even just in the past couple of years! I hope you have a ton of fun getting your studio set up. My favorite part about all of this is that, if you have an idea for something, there's definitely a way to do it. I usually just takes a little creative problem solving, but it's always doable.
Thank you thank you 🙏 For being the type of teacher that I always wish that I would of had back in the day when I was in school. I always said, “If the teacher doesn’t even seem interested, then why in the world should I be as a student…”. Respect.

Somehow, that stream's compression is lower and the quality is much much better
Tom... love your channel as you just sit down (or stand up) and talk to us like real people 👍 One basic question I have is why the choice of a shotgun mic, specifically in your classroom? Is that to keep it out of your face? Like with the laptop fan at 100%, would that not be reduced if you had a dynamic mic on a boom or whatever between you and the laptop?
Thanks Andrew! I've honestly just always used shotgun mics to keep them out of the shot as much as possible. But I have noticed that whenever the mic is IN the shot, my students ask more questions about it and how to get good audio. So I've been thinking of trying different mics regularly to spur more questions.
I started a web development bootcamp and I use my Canon M50 for my webcam and the Zoom h5 with a Rode Video micro(?). It's nice to have good quality video and audio. Your students are lucky to have you as a teacher.
You poor thing. We have to use teams at work [so average, but getting better] - when I have to deliver training I sneak home so I can zoom and get the functionality and better chance of reliability!
Wow, the student must be so proud having a lecturer/teacher using high quality setup for teaching, I'm a media student as well but due to economy our lecturer couldn't afford such high quality setup, even having problem with line connection for themselves
I would have loved to have these setups when I was training from home. I would also love for my current instructor to have 1% of these setups. Makes teaching and learning so much more engaging.
It's a lot for someone to learn if they've never done it before, but I really feel for my students who have to sit through multiple classes a day being taught from a Chromebook webcam.
I kept the old name for my podcast, so it still lives! I was just seeing a lot of people struggle to figure out who I am or explain the channel, so I figured this would be easier. It’s been very positive so far!
@@tombuck just teasing, Tom. God knows teachers everywhere would kill to have a setup like this. Unfortunately, my salary + where I live means that it would take a straight year of savings just to buy the MBP. Never mind the EOS R (another year), the RODE stuff (another few months) and all the other knick-knack paddywhacks. Yes i can scale everything down to half-way. Which means 1.5 years of savings and not going anywhere (easier since it's pandemic time, haha). Still, I digress. Really happy for you and your students! And like others said, it's so good to see educators being so well-equipped to deliver their best. Keep it up!

This is fabulous, your genuine enjoyment and passion comes through so clearly! You, Sir, are a clever and gifted teacher; creating opportunities for genuine curiosity to manifest within your students regardless of their learning styles; that you have achieved this as an online delivery is testimony to your abilities. Bravo!

The multitasking muscle memory is such a great place to get to. On a smaller scale, the simple muscle memory of knowing how to set the camera quickly in any moment, if it's too dark or bright. how to get good, practice, practice, practice, cry a little, practice more ;) Life prepped you for this, you are exactly where you need to be!
Thanks for sharing, I'm always trying to make my online classroom more interesting for my students. And your messy wires going everywhere made me feel much better about what's behind my desk!
Gorgeous set up, by the way. I love how you incorporate a two light setup instead of a 3-point, and still pull it off so beautifully. Thank you for these videos.
I'm so lucky to have found this channel. I leant a lot from this. Just graduated from school and landed a podcast studio set up gig. I had no idea where to begin from but this channel saved my day so much. Subscribed.
Some work on a budget, some don't have a clue of what they're doing (age can do that to you - hopefully you'll understand when you get there...), some simply don't care... there's all kinds, like on everything else... but you know what: you too can motivate your teacher... it doesn't have to be always the other way around. Tell him that he should upgrade or even better: help him upgrade! In the long run, you'll benefit with it... and you did a good thing. If everyone did that, this crappy world would be way better. ;-) Take care.
When I first watched your video, it was about the sm7b vs podmic. I thought the quality and info was great but not a channel I would need again. Then I get this in my recommended for a few days and finally watch it. After seeing your enthusiasm and effort, I realize I have much to learn from you. I’m definitely subscribing.
@@tombuck Absolutely! I know you put a lot of importance on audio and so do other people. However, I've yet to see somebody explain the overall setup and the difference between volume and gain. I've seen people talk about the gain on an interface but not their Windows settings on the 'Sound control panel>levels' tab and whether this is volume or gain. This comes to mind because I was just watching your "Do you need a cloudlifter" video and you talk about too much gain causing that hiss. I always thought that was just background noise due to AC or fan spin etc, perhaps that could be worth a video. Have a good day!
@@tombuck Might save people a few dollars by not going out and buying a dynamic XLR mic (as I did) thinking the source of the hiss was due to my mic being a condenser USB mic.
Man.. you are living my dream. I’ve been in broadcast and a photographer for 20 years and love to teach! Teaching media production is the dream! Haha. Great job here and you’re a great teacher.. also “use original audio” on zoom changed things for me with the ATEM Mini Pro.
I love it! I used my 5D Mark IV as a webcam, and then connect my mic. I ended up purchasing ManyCam so I can add in some overlay features, gifs, and etc. The kids really love it! Thanks for sharing!
tom thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise on setting up for a proper zoom/online class. I struggled with it through Covid and got very little help other than trial and error. Wish I found you in the middle of covid. My students and I have just begun producing podcasts and they love it.
I really love you talking about how you got into doing what you do and how you got there. I am loving piking around with technology and finding something I like doing. I’m a 57 year old woman and I’m thinking I could have some fun here. You sort of give me permission to try. Thank you.
This is really nice to hear! It's definitely worth indulging your curiosity. I'm really grateful that I had grandparents who lived well into their 90's and were always interested in trying/learning new things. It was a good way to learn that age doesn't matter for the most part.
Just came across your channel bro when I was trying to use my webcan as one angle and my cell phone as another angle wirelessly you're awesome keep up the good work.
This was great! Love the thought into your setup, from each little super clamp down to wanting to spark conversation with your students, this is a really well thought through setup!
Such a great video to watch as a teacher. Completely relate to the ‘100% unnecessary but super fun’ comment. That stuff also leads to unexpected shifts in pedagogy and content. Also love the thought given to the little Easter reefs that the Keen or curious student might pick up on and form the start of a teaching moment.
"Shifts in pedagogy" - yes! It's funny because I started my RUclips channel as an outlet to get away from my job, but then it ended up having a huge impact on how I do my job 😁
@@tombuck Indeed! And we are the better for it. I am enjoying a sort of blurring of teaching and creative practice that became part of 2020 (and is worth stashing as a positive thread of COVID’s legacy). There is a luxury as a teacher of a creative/arts-making subject of space to explore, that not every teacher gets to enjoy, but I have seen brilliant practice emerge across all subjects that challenges preconceptions of teacher/student dynamics.

He's over here doing all this extra stuff and my prof can't even get his headset to work, so that we can actually understand what he's saying... 😂
Wow, the student must be so proud having a lecturer/teacher using high quality setup for teaching, I'm a media student as well but due to economy our lecturer couldn't afford such high quality setup, even having problem with line connection for themselves
Internet connections are a whole different issue for sure. Thanks for the kind words!
My lecture with 0.3MP camera : "can you see me?"
"I think you're muted"
@@tombuck 😅
I would have loved to have these setups when I was training from home. I would also love for my current instructor to have 1% of these setups. Makes teaching and learning so much more engaging.
It's a lot for someone to learn if they've never done it before, but I really feel for my students who have to sit through multiple classes a day being taught from a Chromebook webcam.
This class: best setup
Next class: webcam
If only all teachers cared as much. Great stuff.
Hey Tom, I love your videos. Have I missed you telling us about why you changed the name of your channel?
Haha, I just sort of “went for it” about a month ago. 😬
I actually liked the name of the channel, but I believe I get it, now it's personal and brand building..
@@tombuck love the change, it's easy to say. Tom Buck! Your Rodecaster videos helped me alot.
I kept the old name for my podcast, so it still lives! I was just seeing a lot of people struggle to figure out who I am or explain the channel, so I figured this would be easier. It’s been very positive so far!
Tom Buck I like this more! So no complaints from me!
What a great teacher!!! Giving the students the best quality view & doing the most to make class time more interesting!
Thank you- I try 😬
should add the keyword zoom to the title so teachers and professors can find it easier!
Nice if only every teacher was this awesome online!
Me: Alright let's take some notes to improve my teaching.
Tom: First, I use my MBP 16 for everything.
Me: Aight, imma head out.
That’s just my computer. This setup will work with any somewhat decent pc or Mac 👍
Keep it up!
@@mushi_k just get a decent laptop and save some money on the side to get a decent pc then once you get the best of both worlds just get all the other accessories. BTW not sure if you remember me its Aidan
Totally true about the cable mess, but a great idea is to print little tags that stick to each cable that say what that particular cable is for or connected to.
Yes! My wife does this and it really does make a difference (especially when cables are stored away and you can't remember what they belong to).
Imagine having Tom as your teacher
What a nightmare 😬
This is fabulous, your genuine enjoyment and passion comes through so clearly! You, Sir, are a clever and gifted teacher; creating opportunities for genuine curiosity to manifest within your students regardless of their learning styles; that you have achieved this as an online delivery is testimony to your abilities. Bravo!
Thank you so much Alex! This is such a day-making comment to read, I really appreciate the kind words! 🙏
RUclips and Twitch streamer, after watching this video be like
Them:Am I joke to you?
This guy is so handsome and creative with great vibes. I'm sure he's a great teacher, spouse and colleague. We need more people like this in the world.
This is literally the nicest comment ever. I'm not joking when I say I was recording a podcast when the notification popped up and I had to stop and read it because it made my day. Thank you!
@@tombuck I'm so glad you read it!
Yes- things like that really make a difference.
My teacher with bad wifi, a REALLY bad camera and low microphone👁👄👁
you are the coolest teacher i have ever seen, icurrently study in sslsd in qatar and im in grade 9 and the teachers are really boring, i really wish you were my teacher
Thank you for the kind words- please feel free to remind my students of this. ;)
I wish you were my teacher in school then :(
Outstanding project based real world education.... your students, and we, are fortunate.
7:55 - 12 frames per second? That's being VERY generous, from my experience it looks more like 3 frames per second lmao
Haha, true 😁
The multitasking muscle memory is such a great place to get to. On a smaller scale, the simple muscle memory of knowing how to set the camera quickly in any moment, if it's too dark or bright. how to get good, practice, practice, practice, cry a little, practice more ;) Life prepped you for this, you are exactly where you need to be!
Thanks man! Practice is definitely key. It's not the most exciting answer, but it's the most accurate.
@@tombuck it's the secret no one wants to hear but it's the one that propels the ones that do it! Thanks for all your videos!
Meanwhile my teacher is filming on a potato with a 2 dollar mic
Thanks for sharing, I'm always trying to make my online classroom more interesting for my students. And your messy wires going everywhere made me feel much better about what's behind my desk!
Haha, that’s why I wanted to show it! I see so many perfect looking setups and am always like...mine doesn’t look like that.
Meanwhile I can’t even hear my professors because their internet is terrible and their sound come in all distorted.
Gorgeous set up, by the way. I love how you incorporate a two light setup instead of a 3-point, and still pull it off so beautifully. Thank you for these videos.
Thanks so much!
I wish he was my teacher.
The perfect digital something teacher
why can't you be my teacher!?!
I'm so lucky to have found this channel. I leant a lot from this. Just graduated from school and landed a podcast studio set up gig. I had no idea where to begin from but this channel saved my day so much. Subscribed.
Oh wow! I’m so glad to hear it’s been helpful! Congrats on your new job!
@@tombuck Thanks friend
Then there’s my teacher who uses a Nokia phone with in built microphone and shit lighting with 1kbps WiFi smh
If everyone did that, this crappy world would be way better. ;-)
Take care.
I'm so glad to hear it! Let me know if there's anything you think would be helpful, and maybe it'd be a good video idea 👍
Interesting 🤔
@@tombuck Might save people a few dollars by not going out and buying a dynamic XLR mic (as I did) thinking the source of the hiss was due to my mic being a condenser USB mic.
my teachers dont even know how to share their screen smh
Damn as a student I‘m really jealous. Wish I had you as teacher. You can tell that you take your job seriously and live for it. Keep it going 🙏🏻
Thank you!
best teacher ever!!! it feels so great to see your passion!!! Amazing setup 👍🏻
Thank you! I hope it helps.
Man.. you are living my dream. I’ve been in broadcast and a photographer for 20 years and love to teach! Teaching media production is the dream! Haha. Great job here and you’re a great teacher.. also “use original audio” on zoom changed things for me with the ATEM Mini Pro.
It's definitely an ideal situation. I didn't expect to have this position, so who knows where things can take you in the future! 👍
You seem like an awesome teacher! Students are lucky to have someone with such knowledge and passion brother!
Thanks Daniel! I’m hopefully it makes some sort of positive impact.
You are the coolest teacher ever, your student’s are lucky to have such a cool teacher
Thank you! Please tell them that. ;)
Would have loved to have a teacher like you growing up. Keep up the good work!
Thank you kindly!
This teacher is worldclass... awesome quality material!
🙌🏻
Rode Mixer is a must !!! Best device for anyone streaming.
Awesome Video btw
I love it! I used my 5D Mark IV as a webcam, and then connect my mic. I ended up purchasing ManyCam so I can add in some overlay features, gifs, and etc. The kids really love it! Thanks for sharing!
I haven't heard of ManyCam, but that sounds awesome! Kids really like gifs 😁
What a fantastic, inventive, passionate teacher you are. Really happy to have seem this video.
Thank you!
This guys breading the next generation of online professionals. 🤘🙌
Hopefully they use their powers for good!
Best Set up Sharing video ever. Like what you said how and why you do youtube channel." Passion gives the fuel of Success !"
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you.
This is an awesome setup and explanation. Your students are blessed for sure!
I appreciate that!
This is awesome, I wish I had professors like you. It definitely seems like the class would be much more interesting!
Thank you! Hopefully they’re not totally dull 😁
tom thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise on setting up for a proper zoom/online class. I struggled with it through Covid and got very little help other than trial and error. Wish I found you in the middle of covid. My students and I have just begun producing podcasts and they love it.
That's so awesome! Your students are very lucky. I'm glad they're enjoying the world of podcasting 👍
Im thinking of using the technology as a tracking tool.
Just came across your channel bro when I was trying to use my webcan as one angle and my cell phone as another angle wirelessly you're awesome keep up the good work.
I really wish all teacher we’re passionate like him.
This is fantastic, so cool to see a teacher with such enthusiasm
I definitely like to project my enthusiasm!
This was great! Love the thought into your setup, from each little super clamp down to wanting to spark conversation with your students, this is a really well thought through setup!
Thanks Matt! I try to be thoughtful about things, so I'm glad that came through on here!
