The BMD camera app works well. I have it setup with a Hollyland Mars 4K and the camera app wireless to the BMD ATEM Extreme ISO. Works great as a roaming camera along side of tethered cameras.
BM will not improve out of sync. It is because iPhones do not shoot Constant Frame Rate but (variable frame rate) VFR. This is why audio is not synced.
Dude, your channel has answered every question I’ve pretty much ever had when it comes to all this tech stuff. Can’t thank you enough. I have bought so much equipment because of you and have yet to regret any of it. All your reviews and tutorials, are just awesome. To the point, kinda funny, with clear instruction. 💯 Appreciate your work. ✌️
It might be different on the new USB C iPhones, but with the lightning adapter you get maximum output of 1080p - also it is compressed, as lightning doesn't have dedicated lanes like the 30 pin connector had, so the phone sends H.264 over USB to the adapter, which then decompresses it and outputs it over HDMI. Regarding the lag: Did you disable the stabilization? That reduced the latency in my tests by a mile.
The Lightning -> HDMI is an active adapter with its own processor in it. From what I understand it functions almost like a Mini-AppleTV. This extra chip has its own latency so you should get much better results with a new USB C iPhone, as the video output over USB C is native to the processor inside the iPhone itself (same shpuld be true for an iPad with USB C). Fun fact: the chip inside the Lightning -> HDMI adapter is stronger by its specs than the main processor of the first iPhone
Tom, I just wanted to drop a note of encouragement from someone who has learned so much for you, and have also enjoyed the terrible puns, as well as the visually interesting room that you maintain for your videos. Thank you for all the time that you have invested in this channel, and I hope it is beneficial for you, as well.
As well as letting you use an iPhone as a camera source, the hdmi adapter let's you bring in keynote presentations, photos, videos, or just your phone screen. It is a great addition for livestreaming.
I have loved this feature a lot, I use with my iPhone and an external monitor when filming myself. I just picked up a used Viltrox 5.5" lite monitor, and that can give me waveforms and stuff and I can see what the camera is seeing, but without the interface. One other thing you can do, if not using HDMI, is swiping up on the screen removes the interface, you can bring it back by swiping down, so you can still get a clean feed after setting your settings.
It’s a delay only on the 2 mic inputs in the ATEM software. So Tom get a mic out on the iPhone camera run it through the mic input on the atem tune it up…. good job bud…hope it works.. Also if use two professional cameras and connect the same way u have this setup, u may still have latency. Great content as always…
In iPhone go to settings, set it to the same framerate as the atem/your fs camera framerate. Latency is because the atem tries to convert the given framerate into the framerate of the first input from the atem. That’s at least what I would try.
Hi Tom Have you tried to to set the stabiliser in the BM app to Off, it could maybe solve the problem? I have had similar problems with GoPros, in live streaming when stabiliser was on, but solved the problem with stabiliser off on the GoPro's. Great work you always put up on your channel :)
I think the sync issue is something that Blackmagic has to be able to fix in a software update. I did a show with my iPhone running "Clean HDMI Out" with Filmic Pro a few years ago, into an ATEM Mini Pro, streaming directly to RUclips via ethernet. I don't remember having a huge sync issue. It might have been off by a few frames, but it certainly wasn't on the magnitude of what you're seeing with your current setup.
This is interesting. I want to use iPhone 14 Pro Max and 15 Pro Max as two video feeds into ATEM Mini Pro via the Blackmagic camera app. Still a lot to learn.
I have watched quite a few clips on the Atem mini. You are the first to mention latency. Unfortunately that was after I purchased my Atem mini. My intended use is to display a lecturer on the screen behind him so people at the back get a better view. A small latency would be acceptable but I don’t think this amount of delay is ok.
A real game changer ! I use old iphone to do the job - and no App is really working - so I let it down the Atem. Maybe I'll be back on producing video with Atem & the BlackMagic App (not available in Italy - but available in France !)
Hey Tom, what a great idea! Certainly as a potential B camera, or a wonderful way to use several iPhones if that’s what you have access to. And the BlackMagic app is really nice - I’ve used it several times recently with some really great results. I also noticed the new support tier! Yay! I feel like people really enjoy your content and the presentation, and this gives us all an opportunity to help out a little more if possible! And the tier title is pretty fun - “Buck Brigade”! I hope others will be able to join in and help keep the “Buck” moving haha! After all, the “Buck” does stop with you!
I downloaded the app over the weekend and missed the clean HDMI output slider in the settings. This is cool. As the the audio lag, what if you took your analog output from your sound board and put it into the iPhone mic input??? That would be a neat test to see if the lag goes away as it goes into the ATEM through the HDMI input. Hmmmm
Did the Amazon adapter have less lag? Kind of looked like it for a second. Doesn’t take away the fact that the quirks it comes with are worse than the lag.
The lag kind of comes and goes to certain degrees with both adapters it seems, so it may have just been a "good" section of footage, but overall they perform the same in terms of latency.
I could hug you. To tell me what I need to know in less than a. minute is awesome and very inspiring. Love it. Good luck to you sir! I'm watching this video and smiling away... well done! I need you to slow down slightly becuase I'm learning new stuff from you but still! That's just my brain being a bit slow! You defo have the x factor
iPhone still can't kick 4k in clean. Even if the ATEM is limiting. I've used Ecamm with camlink4k and also other devices direct into Ecamm, oBS, etc. The iPhone 15 pro is still the limiting factor. Apple support confirmed that for me.
This was so interesting. My question is can you control the phones lens options via the ATEM and BM app like you can with the BM PTZ cameras? Touching the phone to change the zoom in a live setting would be less than ideal.
You can control them through the app, but not currently via the ATEM. I am curious to see if they would be able to add in more ATEM functionality as time goes on. It'd be awesome, but it might also be something that Apple totally wouldn't let them do.
I wish the Atem could trigger recording via HDMI on my iPhone, like it can with Black Magic cameras. That way when it came to recording I could replace the 1080p proxy files with 4K Apple Pro Res captured on the iPhone.
What about ATEM to USB-C iPhone? There are other apps which do clean HDMI on iPhone, too. If you connect an Apple TV or other AirPlay to an input on your ATEM, you can cast your iPhone clean HDMI screen to your ATEM. With the Accsoon hardware & software that lets you use your iPhone or iPad as a camera monitor, you can cast your camera output to the ATEM via AirPlay with this technique. And iPhone 15 (and iPad Pro & iPad Mini) can also output HDMI via a DP-to-HDMI adaptor.
I’m not moving to a phone-only setup anytime soon, but I can definitely see how it could work for some folks! And having the top down-type shot from a phone is more awesome than I expected, so I am definitely going to use that!
The phone latency you were seeing likely was because you had 4k recording still set. By changing it to 1080p, it’s gone. It’s delayed because the output is 4k and is getting slowed down within your USB c and dongles. It will fix it. No lag when 1080p
Haha. As I was saying “yeah but you can edit after to sync it” then you said it anyway. I can see how annoying it is, because it is. This video is great because I bought an ATEM Mini Pro ISO and unfortunately as great as it is, am finding it useless and pondered selling to to people who would be able to use it. Now because of yet another one of your videos, I now have use.
I wonder if the latency is due to the lightning connector using USB 2.0...? Maybe the latency will be improved on the new iPhone 15 pros that have faster USB ports
Mostly it seems to come from the stabilization, with that turned off I observed lower latency. But the encoding and decoding to get display data over lightning surely takes some time, so the USB C with native Alt-DP mode in iPhone 15 should be faster.
If you’re familiar with Aaron Parecki who has a great channel geared towards ATEMs, he designed a whole bunch of different stands for streaming gear. I really like it, and I put a link in the description if you’re interested 👍

@tombuck could you use a macro to switch cameras and change the frame delay in the atem? Macro 1 pulls cam 1 with a 5 frame delay, the macro 2 pulls cam 2 with a 7 frame delay. Just a thought

There haven’t been any updates for quite some time. Blackmagic doesn’t seem to stick with a specific schedule, so as long as you’re happy with a 1080 workflow, it could be a good deal!
He Thanks for the Video. But i cannot get a picture with my iphone 15 pro in our atem television studio hd. I think its because i cannot set it on 1080 50 fps.
Sir, Can we use our front camera of iphone with Blackmagicdesigncamera app for a clean HDMI out.? ( I might've missed that detail.) Nice video & Thanks :)
Hey Tom, great videos. I was wondering do you have any suggestions for the best camera to run into the Atem mini Pro for between $500-$800 ? We want a 3 camera set up for our curch but finding it hard to zero in on the best cameras, thanks.
In that price range I would recommend the Sony ZV-E10. It comes with a decent kit lens, and you can add additional lenses as time goes on and more budget becomes available. Otherwise it could be worth looking into a camcorder like the Sony FDR-AX43A or similar. It likely won't look quite as good as the ZV-E10 but it has a versatile built in lens that can work really well for church events. Alternatively, if you can save or increase the budget, the Blackmagic Studio Camera is a great choice for a lot of churches, especially because of its native ATEM integration (although it does NOT come with a lens, so keep that in mind).
Thanks a lot for this informative video! One question: with my Atem I can trigger record my black magic cams via HDMI. Is this possible with the iPhone as well?
This is a great question! Unfortunately I believe the answer is no, but there might be someone with more Blackmagic expertise than me who knows otherwise.
I am using the ATEM Mini Pro ISO with 2 iPhones and an iPad. Will the iPad and iPhones still record the video on devices as I’d rather store all the data on a t5 connected to the atem. Any help would be awesome!
I I hate it when an after market device like that gets plugged in and then leaves you "dongling" about wondering what will happen next. As I have gotten older, I just want stuff to work correctly. This tends to be an area where Apple shines. The you stay within their ecosystem their stuff will have a tendency to work reasonably well. The cost of this is, of course... "The Apple Tax." Sometimes I even have an issue with that knowing what I know. If I were really wealthy I would not be concerned... but that is not the case... LOL. So the struggle continues.. Thanks for sharing this useful information.
I am trying to figure out why my Atem Mini Pro records an MP4 video file that Davinci does not recognize. Any ideas why or how to best solve? I am trying to record sound through my Rodecaster Pro II and Video through the Atem Mini and the Y-Cord wasn't a good sound. I was going to put them together as you suggested in post editing as you suggested and have run into this issue. Other users suggest converting the file but it seems like an unnecessary step especially since both the hardware and software are through Blackmagic. Thoughts?
@@mrsiestakey941 - sure thing. It took me a few to figure that out. It's a little complicated because you need to hook up the ATEM to your computer (via USB or Ethernet) so that the ATEM Software Control can adjust settings on the Switcher. On the Mini Pro ISO, since there's only one USB port, if you use USB to connect for the Software Control, then you'll have to disconnect the ATEM - so that you can hook up a USB drive in order to get all the recordings. It does seem to preserve the settings though. It's under the "Output" tab in the Software Control - you check the "ISO record all inputs" box. Also, you can set the filename. Hope that helps! It seems like if you use ethernet to connect to the ATEM from your computer (I don't have an ethernet port) then you can simultaneously run the Software Control AND have a USB drive plugged in.
@@NeilSattin That is great info. I have my laptop hooked up via ethernet cable and use an external USB T7 SSD. I didn't think about changing the output in the controls. I guess I assumed it was something in Davinci settings. Thank you again.
Just disable iPhone stabilization and it will get rid of any lag ! , ( it also works for go pros and any camera with stabilization) And Have a Great day.
For now the app is iPhone only. Blackmagic has typically made their stuff compatible with multiple platforms, so I’m guessing they’ll have an Android version at some point? Unless there’s something about working with Apple cameras/codecs specifically that’s different from the much wider variety of components found on Android phones.
I just love this! I was flirting with this idea a few days ago for one of the podcast I produce. This is just brilliant, you answered ever possible question I had. Thank you Pod Commander 🫡

Close but no cigar....For now. We are very close to the death of dedicated cameras with a smaller sensor than APS-C now (in my opinion!).
I’m not moving to a phone-only setup anytime soon, but I can definitely see how it could work for some folks! And having the top down-type shot from a phone is more awesome than I expected, so I am definitely going to use that!
Make a macro to switch angles and audio delay simultaneously.
This seems like a really smart solution.
The phone latency you were seeing likely was because you had 4k recording still set. By changing it to 1080p, it’s gone. It’s delayed because the output is 4k and is getting slowed down within your USB c and dongles. It will fix it. No lag when 1080p

Just some little questions here.
Unfortunately no, as the Blackmagic app only works with the XR and newer.
@@tombuck Got it.
I am using the ATEM Mini Pro ISO with 2 iPhones and an iPad. Will the iPad and iPhones still record the video on devices as I’d rather store all the data on a t5 connected to the atem. Any help would be awesome!
Yes, they should as long as there's enough storage.
Question: Can you add a wireless transmitter/receiver system to the audio mixer using vocal microphones like the Shure MV7? Thanks!
Yes- you can use an XLR wireless system and connect the transmitter to the mic and the receiver to one of the mic inputs of the ATEM 👍
I appreciate your feedback! I would love to see you create a video on this if possible. Thanks for your help!@@tombuck
"MINI"
I think blackmagic needs a new name for the bigger atem minis
I I hate it when an after market device like that gets plugged in and then leaves you "dongling" about wondering what will happen next. As I have gotten older, I just want stuff to work correctly. This tends to be an area where Apple shines. The you stay within their ecosystem their stuff will have a tendency to work reasonably well. The cost of this is, of course... "The Apple Tax." Sometimes I even have an issue with that knowing what I know. If I were really wealthy I would not be concerned... but that is not the case... LOL. So the struggle continues.. Thanks for sharing this useful information.
Where did you bought the purple wires?
They’re the Kondor Blue Gerald Undone cables 😁
@@tombuck do you have a link?
1080p60?
Can I use an iPad with it
What hdmi adapter are you using on the iphone?
I use this one because my phone is still Lightning: geni.us/yNeT2
"It's Backstreet" 😂😂😂
Backstreet NSYNC no comments on this? 😂
I was proud of that one.
Thoughts?
You have to use the ATEM Control software to change the settings so that you get the whole ISO recordings and da Vinci project vs just the mp4.
@@NeilSattin Thank you. I will give that a try. I appreciate you taking the time to answer.
Bruh.... U have to be the king of corny dad jokes LMAO, it's Backstreet, it's not Nsync !! TOO FUNNY !!!
I was probably too proud of that one 😁
Wait... WHAT? 😮
Do android phones work?
The app is currently iPhone-only (I'm not sure why).
the channel supporter text is getting smaller!
I guess it’s a good problem to have? Maybe it should split to two pages 🤔
@@tombuck yes, you should do it. haha
good
Whats with android?
For now the app is iPhone only. Blackmagic has typically made their stuff compatible with multiple platforms, so I’m guessing they’ll have an Android version at some point? Unless there’s something about working with Apple cameras/codecs specifically that’s different from the much wider variety of components found on Android phones.
@@tombuck thx!
I just love this! I was flirting with this idea a few days ago for one of the podcast I produce. This is just brilliant, you answered ever possible question I had. Thank you Pod Commander 🫡
Happy to help! I've been tinkering with a phone for top down shots now and it's super handy!
