  • So we compare the two heavyweights - 2021 RE Classic 350 and Honda CB350 RS - which are the two most sought after motorcycles in the 350cc classic category. While the RE has its strengths, the H'ness brings a freshness to the segment that many look for.

Tall gearing one should not change gears just because engine sound is at higher RPM. I've done 110 in 3rd gear without the limiter kicking in means it's still able to go higher. Problem is in India we aren't used to tall gearing concepts. Same thing with my friend's BMW bike 1st gear can take upto 40kmph. Not really needed to change gears.

After completing 3000 Kms on my Highness, I can safely say that it is an excellent bike to ride in the city as well. The tall gearing needs some getting used to but man, the precision with which each gear slots is so satisfying! The torque and pull is a joy to use and the exhaust note is the best among any single cylinders I've heard in my life. The sweet Triumph-like whistling, coupled with a heavy bass and thump makes up for a beautiful riding experience.
The motorcycle handles beautifully and is very nimble for its weight.
I've had dozens of people enquire about it (and praise the looks) ranging from traffic signals to petrol pumps. Heck, I've even seen guys stop their bikes to check my parked Highness.
For anyone who has doubts regarding this motorcycle, I would suggest going for a proper test ride. Maybe this motorcycle isn't made for you but the only way to find out is - go for a test ride!

Being a Mechanical engineer and a designer in automotive field, I have following observations.
I was looking for a family bike for city rides mostly with a flat (horizontal seat), circular headlamp and retro-like + premium design (not like 100-150cc bikes).
After exploring lot of bikes, I finalized three options to compare.
    1. Honda H'ness 350 CC
    2. Royal Enfield Hunter Rebel 350 CC
    3. TVS Ronin 225 CC
I test drove all 3 vehicles 2-3 times and following are my observations,
    1. Honda H'ness 350 CC -
*Pros* - Nice retro/classic look, Low end torque is good, Seating space for pillion rider is more than other two vehicles.
*Cons* - Bulkier (Box size), Paint quality, Higher cost as compared to other two vehicles
    2. Royal Enfield Hunter Rebel 350 CC -
*Pros* - Beautiful Design/Styling/Look, Great color schemes, Turning radius is smaller than Ronin (Less space to turn the vehicle), Reasonable cost.
*Cons* - The biggest issue (design flaw) is positioning of foot rest (pegs), just below the sitting position. This makes it difficult to keep your feet on ground while you are at signal or in slow moving traffic. Foot rest (pegs) keep touching your legs and is very uncomfortable.
Another point is that seat on rear end tapers downward and seating space for pillion rider being less, pillion rider tend to move back and when you accelerate, pillion may feel like toppling/falling down at back side. So this is not safe and hence, back rest is MUST.
Handle bar positioned in such a way that you need to keep your hands stretched straight all the times which is not a comfortable sitting posture.
Low end torque/performance (2 & 3 gear) is sluggish due to bigger engine. (Not as good as smaller capacity bikes)
    3. TVS Ronin 225 CC -
*Pros* - Semi-retro look with circular headlamp, Driveability and Performance is superb.
Handle bar position is very good for comfortable sitting posture with hands slightly bent in elbows. Very easy to handle in traffic.
*Cons* - Very bad design/aesthetics of fuel tank (some odd shape), Color schemes are odd (not impressive), Turning radius is higher than Hunter (Needs larger space to turn the vehicle). Cost is on higher side for lower CC as compared to Hunter (mainly due to features).
Overall, none of them is meeting my requirements (as mentioned above) and hence, I decided to wait for Kawasaki W175 or Yamaha XSR or Improved version of Royal Enfield Hunter.
    All the best!
    Regards, Jayesh Shimpi

By gods grace, i have both of these marvellous machines.
    I’ll share a brief review.
    classic 350 has:
Short gears, kick start, thumping sound and most importantly lower service charge.
    Whereas Cb350 has:
Very refined engine, highly advanced and useful semi digital display, comfortable city ride (due to less weight), slipper clutch (very useful in city traffic)
Thing i dislike about classic 350 is its unnecessarily heavy, has vibrations and a very basic display. Its hard to handle in city. Also, i am not convinced why we get such a basic display which doesn’t even tell fuel status. And ofc, no LED headlights.
    Things i don’t like in CB350:
Very tall gears, you have to actively shift gears in city. You cannot stay slow while in gear 2 without holding clutch. Placement of horn and indicators. Though it does have a louder thumping sound but when you speed up, its engine sounds like a normal honda bike.

Hey, I'm trying to decide between the new classic 350 and Hness.. And my purpose will be riding 50-60 kms every day, on a road that includes huge traffic jams, slow moving traffic and some fast/free stretches.. I'm around 5`5 height..
      I'm mainly looking for
      1. COMFORT
      2. UPRIGHT POSITION of body and legs..
      3. Rarely I would go at 100 or more. Mostly max of 70-80 on the free stretches.
Not worried about the other features,
Also, do u think the new Classic 350 will have the problems like the old one (parts not functioning, frequent visit to service centers), etc.. Most reviews say, atleast the vibrations have reduced except for very high speeds.
Also, i read somewhere that after a while, the sound of the CB350 gets irritating.. Can you confirm?

@@jithutube Hi Jitesh, in response to your questions :
If i were you i would have preferred CB350. Its very easy to ride and its weight is distributed in such a way that you wont feel exhausted.
Also, since you have stated traffic jams, it means you need to hold clutch more often, hence CB350 is better.
However new classic 350 is way better than old one. Has better function and less vibrations but speaking of overall built quality - honda has an edge over classic.
Conclusion- if you are okay with sight more weight and little stiff clutch then you can surely go for classic.
And yes, sound of cb350 is very loud as compared to classic. I wont say irritating but surely noticeable.

Classics (classic350,cb350 and any other classic bike) are tuned and built for comfort and classic looks where as sports bikes like apaches and cb300r etc are built for performance.. to bring out the best performance requires a lot of R&D (aerodynamics and all).

I being a Honda Unicorn user since 2007..rely mostly on the refined buttersmooth engine of Honda.. But today I went to Mumbai Andheri BigWing and found total lack lustre sales people... Literally not interested in Selling the bike despite I arriving in an X-Blade and being a Honda Customer... I was not given a test ride, I was allowed to sit on their test ride vehicle and did not find the seating as upright as one can expect from a retro cruiser... Was dissatisfied with the kind of unwelcome I got from Honda Big Wing.. Next I dropped in at my local RE showroom and was treated with respect and was offered a test ride straight away in the green 350 J series classic.. I felt much better then I test rode the bike.. And the dealer in Chembur trusted me to not send a pillion.. Whatever.. However high tech Honda is.. I still felt that connection with the classic.. Despite knowing I may run into all kinds of issues with the classic 350...but the charm of that low end Torque.. Is magical... Honda with all it's technology and refinement cannot match that. I'll go with the classic.

If you haven't ridden the Highness then maybe you should stop talking. You are a blind RE fanboy who is unable to accept a better product simply because you are living in your own bubble. Highness has all metal parts (including the side panels, fuel cap and mudguard) and still beats the crap out of both Meteor and Classic 350 when it comes to performance. Don't you think it's a shame that a century-old brand has managed to iron-out vibrations and harshness now? RE has improved a lot over the years, and the new J platform Classic is really appealing. But personally, I prefer the Standard UCE, coz if I wanted a smooth, refined and user friendly bike, I have better options like the Yezdi Roadster, Jawa 42, CB Hness, which seem to be a better deal. A Royal Enfield should have the old school charm. The low revving long stroke engine, the unmistakable thump (which is unfortunately lost), vibes all added to the feel, which most RE loyalists want.

I own the Shine 2011 model. 12 years completed. I think it will be for the next 10 years without any problem.
The refined engine of Honda is unmatched.
If you have ridden Honda bikes, any other bike will seem inferior.

@@pritesh237 see i know Honda is better in speed but not that much in quality bro....in which aspect can yoi say that RE doesnt have quality? Like see even Grandpa's Royal enfields are still modified and are roden by their grand childs now...even lakhs of kilometres cant effect an RE engine....i totally agree that Honda HNESS is a good choice...it has less weight, has more power on wheels...may have a better top end,but do you really need such speeds in a cruizer ?,RE has developed much and this new ones dont even vibrate upto 120 kmph....so atleast accept the facts what a bike provies man.....
I could have said that if it was in case of HONDA CBR or CB ,but RE is a cruizer brand so it obviously excells in building cruizet than that of honda
If tomorrow,RE is to build a sports bike which is placed in competetion with HONDA CBR 250R ,then i would recommend myself that everyone should go for the HONDA cbr ....thats the case
In cruizer my personal choice will always be RE ,execpt in case of HARLEY ,And RE has even the 2nd heighest worldwide sales of cruizers after Harley ,so thats what iam talking about,
Everyone has their own personal choice and so are the companies....you like HONDA that doesnt mean that the other brand lacks somewhere
And btw congratts on the delivery for your cb350 RS🤝🏻

Totally biased review. Many owners have multiple quality issues. Being an owner of honda CB 350 I really had a pathetic experience. Sharing my experience below.
Thought of sharing my horrible experience for last 5 months with honda Hness CB350 and extremely poor customer service.
I purchased my Bike in July 2021 from Bigwing Honda Kolkata, West Bengal. The very next day of my purchase I have noticed that one of the rear suspension was defective and squeaky noise from rear end. I took this matter to the dealer and informed them regarding the same. I was asked to bring the bike and upon looking into it they replied that everything is fine and that there is no defect in the suspension. I knew that they were overlooking into the matter and ignored my concern. I compared the same with other bikes at the dealership and showed it to them. Thereafter, they asked me to bring the bike to the service centre. The next day I took it to the service centre and the service manager looked into it. Initially he too ignored it and said that everything is fine. I insisted to discuss the same with Honda. He took some videos and sent it to the head office as I was told by him and I was asked to go home. After 2 days of follow up, he informed me that he has received a confirmation from Honda that the suspension is defective and needs a replacement. The suspension was not available and I had to wait for almost 3-4 weeks. Once the part was available, I was asked to leave the bike at the service centre for 2 days. I was not at all comfortable to leave the bike as it hardly takes 10 mins to change the suspension. Honda customer cares help was sought and I got a call from the service centre to bring the bike next day and that they will change the part and handover the bike immediately. The suspension was changed after 3 weeks of wait.
The second issue which I have had reported was squeaky noise from rear end. I had also shared multiple videos to the service manager for his better understanding. I have been to the service centre a minimum of 7 times for these issues. At the same time I have reported the same to Bigwing Honda customer care and a complaint was registered both by mail and over phone. After not getting proper solution from the service centre I have reportedly called and informed the customer care, to which they have assured an action will be taken and the problem will be resolved at the earliest. Every time after every 2 weeks the complaint used to be closed , and I had to call again and reopen it. This has continued to happen for last 4 months. I requested the customer care to arrange a call from Honda as the service centre was not doing much about the issue. But to my surprise Honda never bothered to call the customer and take a feedback after repeated complaints and left the customer on his own. 3 weeks ago the rear brake pad was also changed thinking the sound might be because of the rear brake pad, but the noise has now increased even more with every rear wheel rotation.
For last 1 week I have been trying to contact the service manager, but he never picks up the call.
Now, the question to Honda is, how long do I have to suffer as I am not able to ride the bike after spending my hard earned money? I have been waiting for a solution for last 5 months and it seems everything is falling into the deaf ears. The question arises regarding the quality of the product used in the bike, no proper PDI done, dealer and service response, poor customer service by Honda.
My faith in Honda is totally shattered as I had very high expectations from honda product and service . I demand an immediate fix into the matter or replace it with a new bike as the current bike has multiple quality issues. Also ,if Honda fails to understand my agony and takes an immediate , I will seek help from consumer forum and take legal course of action. Sharing the complaint numbers ( Ticket no. 1-98102587312. Ticket No.1-100833226361.
I really hope you will personally look into the matter and get my bike fixed.
    Regards,
    Dr Ajitabh Mishra
