Thanks to all you subscribers for recommending this one. You folks are the best. So how historically accurate is clothing in RDO? To answer this question I combed through American and British newspaper archives from the 1800s, as well as the 1898 Sears & Roebucks catalog, and a variety of secondary sources. One of my main sources was the book 'The Old West in Fact and Film: History Versus Hollywood', by Jeremy Agnew. I recommend it highly.
Topics include: The surprising dangers of wearing hats; Most popular hats in the Old West; Historical hat customization; Difference between Northern and Southern range hat preferences; Inaccuracies of hats in RDO; Inaccuracy of hat prices; Historical accuracy of coats; Costs of coats; Historical accuracy of shirts and pants; Costs of shirts and pants; Female clothing; History of vests; Costs of vests; History of cowboy boots; Costs of boots; History of chaps; Chap preferences by region; Bandana history; Chap prices; History of leather wrist cuffs.

    About Man vs History:
Man vs History is a RUclips channel that endeavors to combine both education and entertainment, specifically related to history. While the focus of the channel will expand beyond analyzing the historical accuracy of RDO, for the time being, there's still more quality videos to come on the topic.
For the past decade I've been history professor at the college level. The knowledge and skills I acquired through my educational journey and profession are put to work in the creation of these videos, allowing me to locate rare primary source materials, analyze them carefully, and coherently deliver the content in an entertaining and educational manner. For each one I conduct an immense amount of research, scouring American and British archives, books, and scholarly journal articles. Gratefully, my profession also grants me access to a network of historical experts & specialists including authors, university professors, and museum curators. I hope you enjoy the end result!

The accent for Arthur is slightly inaccurate and is a mixture of dialects, but Roger Clark said he wanted to focus more on being consistent and that since that Arthur was constantly traveling that he would probably had picked up bits and pieces from the regions he stayed at.

The American West is a personal fascination of mine (particulalry earlier era - massive fanboy of the Mountain men, disguising it as academic interest). I also teach the topic at exam level. Aaaaand I love Red Dead; frequently using bits of it to illustrate what I'm teaching, particulalry inviting students to identify inaccuracies or anacronisms.
Anyway - thanks for the videos, mate. Definately enjoying them!

They were a limited item available when they did the Outlaw Pass, but as far as I know there are only two of them, one for the first pass and one for the second, and that was the only way to get them. • @TheHeavyshadow
    @TheHeavyshadow 4 года назад +1

Arthur's hat could be tailor-made. But I'm not sure that's a good idea for someone constantly on the run.
I always find it fascinating to see these old prices. Like 85 cents for a vest on average seems so unreal.
And thinking about that: I think an interesting video(series?) could be "How much would/did living in X cost for a day/week/month?" X here being either a real city/town or a RDR2-city/town for which the math is done with a comparable IRL-city/town. Then looking at some everyday-items and -services and how much they cost for what could have been considered "lower class", "middle class", and "upper class", and maybe what professions would have payed enough on average to allow that level of living. Those everyday-items being the bare minimum like "bread" for the "lower class", and more "luxurios" items like sugar, honey, or soap for the "middle class" and "upper class".

I decided my character was a former Dartmouth professor, so he looks fancy-as-hell. Black stovepipe top hat, black formal coat, expensive red vest, bright gold necktie, black opera pants, embellished black boots, studded red spurs, custom black gunbelt, and a golden pince-nez. I wanted to make him unique, so he's rather portly, has shoulder length hair, and has a fancy mustache. To really hammer home his current life as a badass gunslinging hero, he often also wears a black bandolier and black rifleman gloves.

I'm a costume design student and I absolutely love rdr2, so I've always been curious as to the accuracy of the clothing in rdr2, as I know that movies and such often make mistakes, exaggerate, or just simply make design choices favouring their own personal preference over the historical accuracy of the garments, so this video was really interesting!
I am also currently working on a project in which we redesign characters from existing materials but put our own twist on it, and I chose to focus on the American West and need to research historically accurate clothing for the time, so much of the information here will be very useful! Great video! :)

3:15 Is a Gamblers hat and was not as common. These hats though were not that hot nor heavy and were considered great for travelling. It is hard to find one today because they were...well...leather and left untreated tend to not last long. That being said, it is a true hat and very true to that era. Many used them for rain and snowy areas, because of the resistance of never getting soaked--unlike felt and fur. The reason you don't see them in pics is that they shine and this caused issues with pictures of the time. These hats, if original, because of the rarety are highly collectable. You need to find a catalogue during that era, 1880 to say 1890. After that, they seem to be less common. And a true version of this hat exactly how he has it, not fur nor felt. Saint-Denis would have carried this hat though I doubt other towns around Red Dead would have. I doubt Sears would have sold it, however, department stores like Goldwater's or even Macy's (Which did exist at the time) would have had it. These are the type of stores that would have carried it not a Sears. People assume Sears was the majour store at the time, it wasn't. It was founded in 1892 and while Sears did own a store before this and a catalogue it never amounted to much. Sear's store started out as a Watch/Jeweler seller until it incorporated in 1892. By this time, Sear's had left and sold it, he then joined A. C. Roebuck and the current Sears was born. Using it for Red Dead though isn't correct historically, the gang probably never even heard of Sears. MY point, you looking for something that Sears couldn't have carried because it didn't exist at the time of that hat (Which was more like the 1870s to early 1880s.) By the time of Red Dead 2, that hat was out of style though people still wore them.

Another great video! I've found so much of the clothing in the game to be too "gangsta pimp" for my taste. To each their own. My ex-Mountain man/Trapper toon wears worn ropers, buckskin breaches, work shirt with a duster, Liberty hat and chaps. That's as close to cowboy attire as I can seem to put together from the offerings in game. Of course I have other combos for cold weather, i.e. Sobel hat and wooly chaps, etc... I'd sure like to see an historically correct Capote offered.
Keep up the great work my friend!

Great video with lots of very interesting info, however I really would like to have seen you talk about gloves, which is the only item of clothing in RDR2 that you missed as far as I’m aware. Most of the gloves in the game seem to be fairly realistic, but I would’ve found it interesting to hear you talk about why certain gloves were worn among certain types of people. And yes, I realise this video is nearly a year old now, but I just thought I’d mention it anyway haha. And again, really enjoyed the vid, nice work. 👍

Fascinating! The part about hat customization was particularly interesting. I had never even given a thought as to why hats looked the way they did, just assumed that was how people wore their hats back then, not unlike some people today wear baseball caps the wrong way for no particular reason. I would not have imagined that there was actually a practical reason why some wore their hats the way they did.
I was completely unsurprised by how outrageously inaccurate the prices in Red Dead Online are, but I was still shocked to see just how overpriced they are. I mean, a markup of over twenty-five THOUSAND percent (yet we get four percent of the historically accurate payout for bounties)... Really??? Dang, Rockstar, that's what I call cutthroat!

I believe the cavalier hat is more of a “macaroni” hat... which is putting a feather in your hat to look fancy perhaps a rich person educated explorer would wear it?

The most expensive saddle in the 1898 Sears & Roebucks Catalog was $32. Most were around $15. That said, the days of the cowboy would have been a bit before RDR2 begins, and it seems like many things were a little more expensive then (c.1870 vs 1898).

Very interesting video as alway. I highly appreciate your series on RDR2 and hope for many more videos to come. Just one thought on the leather hat: I know, that they are not very common and most likely would be considered kind of exotic in the games region and time but I do like that, because Arthur's hat in the single player game is his "lucky hat" that he has worn for many years and eventually it is passed on to John Marston. In that context I do not mind that they chose this kind of hat considering that is meant to be outstanding. One word on the leather hat beeing very hot. I have worn a heavy bull-leather hat multiple times while on safari in africa and I wore it when I went hiking in the Namibian desert on an extremely hot day with temperatures rising to 113 and I will admit, that a heavy leather hat is hot compared to one made out of linen, but it is perfectly fine even under the most extreme conditions.
