Arthur is definitly not 180lbs, if you have him at overweight he is atleast 230 and if he is average he is atleast 200.
What about perfect
@@user-rf3lk7sh8v probably 205 or 210
Yeah, 6'1" and 180 is pretty lean.
I always forget how big of a guy arthur was
180!is probably underweight Arthur
I think you need to also understand Arthur it’s more of a woodsman than a classy outlaw.
Dutch kind of puts on the front, but in reality they’re all just living in tents in the woods. So Arthur’s stature, fashion, and hygiene all stem more from canonically being on the road/trail for weeks and weeks and less townhopping
ye
ironically I think hes less knowledgeable about being an outdoorsman than the average person was back then.
first off hes a thief, so he can just buy or steal his food when he wanted to. he also isn't as well versed in outdoorsing as we think if he needs to be told that fish and berries attracts bears and hunts rabbits with shotguns. nor could he shoot a bow (which tbf prob wasnt common either), essentially is worse at fishing than everyone else he fishes with, and just isnt generally focused on hunting and outdoorsing when theres already people around him that do that.
I think his work ethic is more in line of a blue collar worker who would just buy food and only hunt when necessary than somone who actively goes out in the wilderness all day (hes already drained from being enforcer in every criminal activity, hes not gonna spend the other half of his day walking in the woods)
@@datguy8468 I think that's an interesting take with a lot of truth to it. The hunting mechanics give off the wrong idea about Arthur's prowess as a hunter. While we're given the ability to use different baits and craft various ointments, in-universe, I imagine he isn't well-versed in these areas unlike maybe a Hosea. Who hands him a crafted tonic early on & and tells him it's better than "that stuff he gets from the stores", to paraphrase and guides us in the bear hunting where he makes a snide remark on Arthur's style of shooting rabbits with a shotgun.
He probably only knows as much as he does because of the gang's lifestyle based on Dutch's affinity and life philosophy of living a free life in the wilderness and fighting for a savage utopia. Which might've naturally led to his bulkier build as well since he goes out for resources and does chores like wood chopping to maintain camp. Otherwise, he might've just stuck to town hopping and been thinner (as Mary says he was) like other outlaws of the time if Dutch hadn't took him under his wing.
@@themadtitan7603 yeah the whole trapper thing and hunting mechanics got people thinking arthur is an unkempt mountain man with a half foot long beard lmao. he's just a hard worker is all
@@datguy8468 Yeah, while I occasionally sport him such a look when I'm out for days outside of towns or camp grinding hunting challenges/quests, I'm generally not very partial to Arthur looking some homeless 1800s hippie with a big, unkempt beard and wearing animal hats and trinkets. I prefer him looking like a simple blue-collar working man with outlaw-y coats, vests, boots. Which is one reason I'm disappointed the more stereotypically western outfits were sort of lacking compared to the first game and the focus seemed more on the crafted hunting garments/sets that make Arthur look ridiculous walking around towns and even at camp.

There is some inaccuracy in Arthur's "gunslinger outfits." Like his hat being made from leather which would be uncommon due to leather being a material that conducts heat and hats were usually made from cotton or some other fabric that wouldn't conduct as much heat since most working class people worked in the sun and didn't want to get hot. And his shirt being a full button down style would have been seen mostly in Europe, most shirts in 1890s America were half button down/pullovers style, aside from that Arthur's clothing is pretty accurate
👍
Thx
uncommon on unrealistic? Because there is a difference.
In Australia we’ll either have a rabbit felt hat or a straw hat leather hats are a bit more durable and they’ll usually be crushable, seen as he’s moving about quite abit packing would be a bit easier not to fuck up his hat
Pretty Accurate until I customise him...............But I don't make him absolutely ridiculous because that ruins immersion, I just make him stand out a little bit while still making him look professional. I even customise his revolvers and gives each of them a name
You have to keep in mind, during this time period, everyone in cities, and townsfolk wore clean hats, suits, and were business men. So for Dutch’s gang to stroll through wearing coats, and rugged shirts, and holsters. It’s the equivalent to how gangsters wear tracksuits, and hoodies in today’s society.
👍
The first time I entered the Bastile in a muddy duster while everyone stared, it felt like a profound scripted moment
That puts it into a different perspective. Interesting observation actually
Arthur is built tough. He can throw a 100+lb deer over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes.
rugged asf
3:02 no, as a 6’1 man who has survived a bear mauling, trolley crash, shot to the shoulder and cliff diving from 1899- that is _in fact_ possible. You just have to be 6 ft tall
the extra inch gives arthur more lives
@@dukemeiser19
Every inch of height above average equals 1 extra life.
Fun fact about John (has nothing to do with video but anyway) John’s “Rip van winkle” name actually has a meaning to it van winkle is an old tale with someone having a nagging wife or lover John could’ve thought about this because he thinks Abigail is like that.
🤙
Thanks for informing me! I always wondered what he meant by that line..
@@beanie640 No problem
the amount of research Rockstar had to do for this game shows even if it is a bit hollywoody you gotta appreciate the amount of effort and work was put into every little detail
🤙
A note on Arthur's formal outfits:
When Arthur wears a tuxedo it would actually be almost a faux pas, because the tuxedo was considered a semi-fornal suit at the time (the name tuxedo didn't come into use until the 1900s). The socially expected outfit for a formal evening dinner/ball/party - especially one hosted by a prominent figure - would be black shoes with spats, black trousers, a white shirt with starched cuffs and bib, a low-cut waistcoat, a high starched collar (separate to the shirt, as it would be buttoned on), a white bowtie, and a tophat. Gloves and a cane would be common accessories but not mandatory

One note I would say in terms of weapons is the addition of schofield. While it was a bit more uncommon it was still prominent in the west. So it wouldn’t be too unusual if Arthur had one.
John W Hardin used one for many years before ending up in prison and after becoming a lawyer post prison he traded the schofield for a pair of colt lightnings
true
Button downs such as arthurs were rare in the US, bibbed shirts were more common. Arthur's leather hat would also be rare, as most hats were felt. The pants, boots, spurs and neckerchief are accurate though.

to put it short, Arthur Morgan is a character and the main playable protagonist of the video game Red Dead Redemption 2. A high-ranking member of the Van der Linde gang, Arthur must deal with the decline of the Wild West while attempting to survive against government forces and other adversaries in a fictionalized representation of the American frontier. He is portrayed by Roger Clark through performance capture. Rockstar Games decided to focus Red Dead Redemption 2 on one character, in order to follow him more personally. They felt this was more appropriate for the narrative structure of a Western. Clark wanted to play Arthur in a manner that was complex enough for the player to choose any path and still have the character make sense. He took inspiration from actors such as Toshiro Mifune, John Wayne, and Rob Wiethoff, who played John Marston in the game and its predecessor.
Arthur has received acclaim from critics, with his complexity and path to redemption most frequently the subject of praise. Reviewers also lauded him for bringing the world and other characters to life, and ranked him among the most iconic video game characters. For his work, Clark accrued numerous nominations and was awarded Best Performance at the Game Awards.

The heights in rdr2 are all over the place. In many cutscene’s different angles make characters have different heights from shot to shot however we can confirm Dutch is 6’0 or Rockstar wanted it to be that way because Benjamin Byron Davis told how Dutch had to be shorten because in real life Davis Is 6’6. So they had a second actor for mo-cap who was 6’0. He was used in the trolley and other missions. Dutch constantly seems to be taller than Arthur so I’d say he’s about 5’11 or 5’10 which is more likely for the time but still taller than most.
i think john is 5’10/11 and arthur is 5’9
so pretty much still taller than average
@@dukemeiser19 you got me
The character models are always the same height tf are you on💀that’s just what all cinematic scenes do.
yeah, arthur is one of the guys you think is short/average due to his build when you see him from afar and then you realize he's taller than you and is just big as fuck. so def 5'10 or '11
In terms of dueling, the days weren't really that chaotic either. Just imagine it as you would imagine today. Most people wouldn't kill another person through out their lifetime, I think hunting was a lot more common though, so that would be the time when they shoot their guns. They also ABSOLUTELY wouldn't have the ammo to train! Ammo was real expensive, and buying ammo was hardly worth the price, even for hunting. So gun wielding experience was hard to come by.
yep
A lot of westerners were Army Veterans so a lot of marksmanship training there.
So basically if it wasn't for gameplay mechanics and players choices he'd be perfect, that's pretty cool
essentially yea
I haven't watched the video yet but Arthur's initial/default look does have him wearing a leather hat, which I heard would've been very rare for the time. Also somewhere mentioned that button up shirts weren't common back then. So if both are true, then not exactly perfect.
In my opinion that Arthur is very historically accurate of how some men were of the 19th century. men did show a lot of their feelings Back then too. but Arthur body type is kind of like Eugene Shadows, a strong man from the 1890s. But men's clothing in the 19th century was very flamboyant stylish especially the gunslingers

I didn’t know that Arthur was 6. 1 and yeah, he is a stocky, build character, which why he fits more on riding draft horses, such as the iron gray Ardennes in the raven Blackshire, which, by the way, those are my favorite horses for Arthur meanwhile me I’m 511 so I’m almost tall as him
i can see arthur owning a nice draft horse
Arthur is not 6'1". It should be noted that Benjamin Byron Davis, Dutch's voice actor, claims that Dutch is 6'0". And if you watch the cutscenes, it's clear that Dutch is a little taller than Arthur, making him around 5'10" - 5'11".
So you are about as tall as Arthur.

Holy hell this video is awesome!

Thank you for making this video it's so interesting
Glad you enjoyed it🤙
I would say that your breakdown of Arthur Morgan, when comparing with historical accuracy of that time-period, is pretty spot on, given my own research of how times were back then and what life was like.
There is one area that I will disagree on, and that is Arthur's size. You say he is supposed to be 180lbs, but from my estimation, based on his wider build, I would say he is probably more around 230lbs - 250lbs, especially if you get him up to weight level 6.5 - 7.5, which to be honest I wish they'd actually given us pounds when showing Arthur's weight in the general stats area, instead of what they did.
If you want another character to review, and I do not know if you've already covered him as I am new to your channel, but I would reccomend John Marston, seeing as you cover Arthur Morgan here, covering john next seems very appropriate.
i haven’t covered john yet, thanks for the suggestion and for the comment 🤙
John Marston would be fascinating to me if they can find some solid sources on the possible inspiration. I haven't encountered any historical figure so far that's poised to be a possible inspiration on John like Arthur has with Doc Holliday's TB and age of death.

Arthur is actually Welsh and some welshmen carry a gene that makes them really big and tall
Arthur is American. He’s got some Welsh descent.
@@LankyLanc03 his parents are Welsh just like John's parents are Scottish
@@bryce4359 Only his mother was Welsh. Besides, this is 1899, it’s hard to pin point the characters heritage. For example, his mother could’ve had English parents. It’s just easier to go down the broad ‘he’s got British heritage’ route.
You called the double action inaccurate, but colt had double action on the American market by 1877. And Micah has 2 model 1892 double action revolvers. The colt thunderer was common by the early 1880s.

His life story is word for word almost exactly what happens in red dead 2 I’m almost 100 percent positive it’s based on Sam bass or they took alot of inspiration from Sam bass’s story. He was an orphan adopted by a gang, turned outlaw after failing to be a rancher, (cowpoke) and one of the gang members turned rat and guess for who? THE PINKERTON DETECTIVE AGENCY! Look it up, it will blow your mind, his story also takes place in Texas which is close to where the rdr2 story is, you can see cities like “Amarillo” and “new Austin” on the map. one tiny thing that always bugged me about RDR2's story, that point blank shotgun slug to the shoulder 100% should've killed him in Blessed are the Peacemakers. there's a major artery right there and i'd assume the blast pressure would blow his lung out (not a doctor.) he also gets shot once before in the same scene and it's never mentioned again. this is a tangent, but i don't understand why the o'driscolls didn't tie arthur up in the first place.
yea valid points
Only noteworthy things about Arthur’s outfit that are wrong are his hat being leather, though this can be forgiven considering its a memoir. His shirt being having full buttons is inaccurate, these shirts did exist at the time but they were only popular and widely utilized in Europe at the time. Americans might have them at the time, but only rich ones and they’d be more likely to be in a suit or any other high class outfit. Lastly, his holster didn’t exist at the time. Holsters by the turn of the century were bulkier and had a full frame that went all the way up to the trigger ring, Arthur’s is smaller and more akin to later holsters invented in the 1920’s.

I was reading somewhere recently about tuberculosis and how in real life it's nowhere near as lethal as it seems to be in the game. Doc Holliday was diagnosed with it in his early twenties and died at 36 years old, for example. Also many people either didn't even get properly sick or recovered naturally (antibiotics hadn't been invented yet) and then just lived normally. Realistically Arthur could have survived for many years with TB, but his dying so quickly could be plausible because of the the physical traumas he goes through after getting infected-camping in a swamp for extended periods, being tortured, surviving a tram crash, surviving a boat crash, starvation, sleeping on a pile of rocks in a jungle, being tortured again, constant gun and knife injuries, extreme psychological stress, being bashed by a coward.
Even so, dying of tuberculosis within only a few months of being infected is very unusual and Arthur most probably died of the physical injuries he suffers just before, with the TB only having weakened him to the point that he was unable to push through. He likely died with TB instead of dying from TB, similarly to how someone dies with AIDS because it weakens them so that a simple cold or a minor cut is lethal, as a opposed to dying from AIDS which implies that AIDS killed them directly.
Anyway, I loved the video-I really enjoy discussions about how plausible things in entertainment media are, despite some people going "it's just a movie, it doesn't have to be realistic." Recognising whether something is or isn't realistic does not detract from my enjoyment of the media if it is made with care and internal consistency, it's just fun to compare with reality.
thanks for being open to discussion and for the comment🤙, in game the story explains that Arthur’s sickness grows worse due to his lifestyle, existential crisis, and constant endangerment.
No, not “even so”💀just what happens in guarma and on the way there is enough to kill most people

I think comparing Aurther Morgan to one of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s characters in a more modernish movie would be a better comparison. Both are fictional super men who are not there to be accurate but to have a good entertaining time. If Arnold Schwarzenegger stared in a western he would play Arthur Morgan.
i can see that
I think Arthur works an embodiment of the romantic, classic western protagonists. I feel RDR2 overall looks and plays out like a classical western compared to the its grittier predecessor.

Keep in mind that muscle weighs more than fat. Arthur was constantly riding horse, doing heavy labor choses in camp. Hauling carcasses of man and critters and beating the tar out of the toughest men the west ever spat out. I think at 6'1" he would weigh closer to 220 with very little fat unless he was dining on beef, bison and bear that week. You get fat in your gut by drinking beer and eating bread and potatoes. Arthur was usually snacking on dried meat and whatever ended up in pearsons pot
yea but arthurs def not 6'1 otherwise hed be a behemoth like tommy or something. hes more 5'10-5'11. 180 for a broad man like him is just unfair so I think saying 5'10 1/2 at 230 (mostly muscle) is the "perfect" weight the game describes him
