    I noticed something about rdr2 settlements. The further from the middle of the map the settlement is, the sadder it is. In the top left, we have colter, which is abandoned. In the top right, we have annesburg, a polluted company town with miserable citizens. In the bottom left, we have tumbleweed, a dying western town with barely any people left. And in the bottom right, we have Saint Denis, a suffocating city full of crime. Then you get to the middle of the map and you have valentine, strawberry, and blackwater (kinda), all healthy settlements on the rise.

    • @Gingersnap_Adventures
      @Gingersnap_Adventures 3 месяца назад +7

      If RDR1 ever gets a remaster they better include the rdr2 map, it may make the map a bit bigger but it’d be nice to see old characters graves like Sean, Lenny, or even Arthur. Also let’s hope that Valentine and strawberry are still thriving as Annesburg in 1911 is probably shut down due to the death of Cornwall, and Saint Denis is probably way more modernized now and I’d doubt Chief Lambert ever died in the time span of RDR2’s epilogue and RDR1 which is 4 years apart, also let’s hope Malloy is still alive since there wasn’t many crimes you COULD find in valentine besides that guy drowning his wife in the drinking things near the stables near the sheep pens and the killer prostitute, so he’s either alive or died of old age which he doesn’t look THAT old so I’m sure he’d be alive, and strawberry’s new sheriff is probably still alive as well since there’s basically no crime in strawberry tbh so he’s fine.

    I understand a lot why towns with less of a western feel were lower, but we also have to remember that the game is about the end of the age of outlaws and how the gang is being pushed further back into eastern civilization, away from the free, open west until there’s no more east left to run to.

    I think they were really careful with the Wapiti because they royally messed up their portrayal of indigenous people in RDR1. So this time they were stepping on egg shells trying not to fuck it up as bad. But in order give the Wapiti location the content it deserved they would have had to invest an inordinately larger amount of resources on it to do it right this time. So they took the more economical route and half-assed it.

    • @randomvideosirecordedforfu8454
      @randomvideosirecordedforfu8454 3 месяца назад +12

      I mean, I wouldn't say that they messed up the portrayal they aren't just hostile for no reason they are hostile towards people because they're angry of what civilization did to them and also Dutch manipulating them to become violent so I think them being hostile towards the player is justified due to civilization destroying all what they had left and Dutch manipulating them

    • @dennettshane1929
      @dennettshane1929 3 месяца назад

      @@randomvideosirecordedforfu8454 writing the story so that they inexplicably elect a psychopathic white man as their leader is not a good look. They wrote them like a violent mob too stupid or desperate to do anything else but destroy themselves. They're like a horde of sad orcs the player has to mow down in waves. Any commentary on the historical indigenous struggle is superficial and stereotypical.
      They also wrote in this terrible token Indian man as if to say "see they aren't all bad" but even still they just kill him because they didn't know what they were doing with that character. In the short time he was there he was more defined by his interactions with white characters than he was defined by his own qualities. Charles Smith in RDR2 is the exact opposite, huge improvement in representation there.
      They didn't just mess up the portrayal it was a disaster.

    As for people hating the epilogue, it seems the majority of the players who disliked it were the same people that didn’t play 1 first. Arthur was such a complex and likable character and that they made John mostly an incompetent member of the gang (being in prison and stranded in the beginning) I felt made people them not like John. For us who played 1, the character build for John made remembering 1 that much better. I loved getting a chance to play as him in 2. Seeing the locations from 1, even as bland as they were was incredibly enjoyable.

    What I really like about Rhodes, and what I didn't notice at first, is that it's a really tense place. People there are a bit more quiet, and it's less active when compared to the engagements in Valentine. Without explaining too much you can feel that for it's townsfolk perspective; the place fell from grace. And the town shares a horrible shame that they don't wish to speak about.

    Manzanita post got absolutely downgraded in RDR2, I never played much of RDR1 (my original PS3 copy had a game-breaking glitch) but I did play RDR: Undead Nightmare and I remember going into the main building and fighting off hordes of zombies with the folk who lived there. All the buildings were explorable, and the whole area in general was very cozy and cool. The people there even let me take anything from the trading post as a gift for helping them, so they made for good companions to speak with. In RDR2, you get a single mission where you pass by them in the Epilogue, and no interiors are used, there's nothing to do, the most interesting part is talking to the people that live there and hearing their unique voice lines since they don't speak much English.

    This video was a great trip down memory lane, thanks!
    With the intent to offer constructice criticism on your commentary and fully acknowledging that this ranking has no claim of being exceptionally critical of the source material, I'd like to ask you what constitutes the "Western" or "Wild Western" feel for you. I mean, your video provides many clues for your perspective on these phrases, but I would like to push back on using such a language, hence my question. It's akin to saying "the Turkish feel, the moustache and the lokum and Istanbul and the darbuka drum" (I'm Turkish btw), and with this example I have in my mind Edward Said's 1978 work "Orientalism" in mind, which simply states that the "Orient" is a caricaturization (not maliciously in every instance mind you, it's simply the way in which Western Europeans categorized the "exotic" Orient and in saying this I have no intention of being condescending or coming across as a pompous ass) of the messy actuality of the totality of the Orient. Since both the "Western" and "non-Western" (using the terms in their colloquial sense) existed concurrently, I believe that the distinction is not only unwarranted in such a ranking when considering one of this game's main objectives (providing an open-world sandbox of the "civilizing", not yet "civilized" world, or "America" at that specific time), but it also lessens the significance of the totality of representation that each place fulfills in game. Lagras showcases the "savages" of the land, Tall Trees or Roanoke Ridge showcases the actual savages; Saint Denis the joys and disparities of civilization, Annesburg its horrors; Armadillo, Valentine, and Blackwater signifying the state of non-industrialized settlements, etc. I think the repeated use of the phrases "Western" and "Wild-Western" in your assessment of these towns does somewhat of a disservice to each settlement individually and to the entire game collectively. This is not to say that my critique invalidates your opinions and your way of commentary, and I have no delusion of sort of editing a video aspiring to have academic qualities. It may very well have to do with being a recent graduate from a social sciences discipline, so feel free to chalk it up to occupational hazard, I sure do.
    Anyway, my only wish was to provide some constructive feedback and introduce a couple of ideas that may interest you in discussing this topic. None of my comments take away from the entertainment value of your video, and I surely shall check your channel for other videos that may pique my interest. Take care!

      7- Annesburg. Again, just nothing special, combined with a bunch of guards helping maybe?
      6- Rhodes. Similar issue, however the red clay dust in the air could create a cool vibe maybe?
      5- Blackwater. Lots of spots to climb(as he mentioned) and plenty of alleyways to wreak havoc upon the town with.
      4-Valentine. Nothing too special about the law, just some pretty skilled lawmen. It just happens to be an amazing town to shoot up, given the western look.
      3- Saint Denis. The massive foreboding lawforce provides a unique challenge. Alleyways, balconies, and roofs are great to shoot from. Not to mention that the lawmen suck ass in Saint Denis. They just walk right towards you in a shootout. Easy pickings.
      2- Tumbleweed. Duh, pinnacle of the west. Plus, Freeman serves as the ultimate boss you have to take down, given that he’s an instant one-shot. Really cool
      1- To nobody’s surprise, it’s Van Horn. Lawless, full of random buildings to take cover in, and full of endless cannon fodder for your ultimate pleasure.

    The reason why the saloon and general store are not available to the player is that Annesburg would make their own money and pay workers with that, only being used in the town essentially trapping people there due to lack of funds. Or at least that’s what company towns did at the time. If it was truly realistic, they would not have a gunsmith as it would be too easy to arm up and rebel.

    I personally wouldn't classify this as a "wild west" game. Idk what I would classify it as, but Wild West really doesn't come to mind. Especially since most of the game is set in the east and deep south.

    the one thing very annoying about RDR2 is how the Trapper in the game is located in some of the most random and far away locations of the map possible, completely removed from any civilization. and some of the locations are even extremely dangerous, close to enemy territory of savages like the Murfrees in Roanoke Ridge or the Skinner Brothers in Tall Trees.
    or how the Trapper in Big Valley is up on the damn mountain hill, at the edge of the game map.
    Rockstar really made the Trapper location strange.
    the Trapper in let's say Tall Trees region of the Skinner Brothers could have just had his shop in Manzanita Post. that would have been perfect.
    plus, I believe Manzanita Post is a fast travel location and would have been perfect to immediately fast travel there and sell the hides you collected from hunting animals.
    just a rant of mine. some settlements in the game seriously lack businesses to trade and make shop indeed.
    even the train could have had some more fast travel points to immediately go to.
    for example visiting the far northern side of Roanoke Ridge could have benefited from having a functional train station when visiting that Nikola Tesla professor at his lab/electrical tower.
    the small abandoned shack there right next to the train line is actually interactable. you can sleep inside the shack.
    I use that place whenever I want to change the time to night because I would hunt down cougars for the pelts to complete the hunter/survival challenges.
