1:10 - The irony is, not too long later during Prohibition, the American government decided to fight illegal consumption of alcohol that was not rated or meant for human consumption by having "additives" put into the alcohol. Starting in 1926, the U.S. government started mandating that alcohol that was being produced, but not the same amount that was allowed for human consumption, was to have ether, acetone, methyl alcohol (wood alcohol) and other harmful chemicals added to it in order to stop people from drinking it. Only... that didn't happen. During New Years Day 1927 at New York's Bellevue Hospital alone, 41 people were killed by such tainted spirits. It's unclear how many died specifically from the additives, but the estimates go to over 10,000 at the highest.

hey, I was right, thought it was moonshine on the community post, great video, my suggestion for the next one is the trading role, where you give cripps a carcass or pelt, he breaks it down and exports it to buyers for the price of 100 goods being about 600 dollars, thanks again, also will be joining your patron. Nice ending as well😁
I feel like RDR Online is full of these missed opportunities (maybe they are on purpose so they can add them as a DLC or rockstar just didnt know) and its such a shame. In my 250 hours of playing RDR Online my camp got raided only once! I do hope rockstar does expand these roles. Suggestions you made here for the moonshiner role sound fun!
@Jack Scott I've been attacked probably around 5 times or so. Basically you get an alert that your camp is being raided and to high tail it back. When you arrive you'll see some guys sneaking up trying to grab pelts and run off. Nothing amazing, but it's fun. I didn't really say it in the video (in hindsight I wish I had), but the moonshiner role needs to have paranoia as it's central identity. Historically these operations were attacked by rival moonshiners, law enforcement, and even WTCU ladies. You had to constantly be on guard. If your still was discovered you had to pick up and move the entire operation. Plus, if you decided to deliver it you had to take all sorts of precautions to hide it. I don't feel any of that in the role.

Hell of a mix. Sadly my great great grandmother took the mix amounts with her to her grave in 2016.

One thing about a moonshine still explosion, unless we are talking a truly exceptional operation, the still would be FAR smaller than a commercial operation.
Agreed. It's plausible that moonshiner still explosions were minimal, or even somehow avoided, as (like I said) I couldn't find a single recorded instance from 1880-1905- the years I searched the archives.
I like the moonshiner role because it's a relatively simple, guaranteed way to make money, but especially because I come from a family of moonshiners (though more post-Prohibition days than 1890s). I do wish Rockstar would do more with the role. I bought the bar size upgrades specifically because I thought it would allow me to make some money from customers, but of course Rockstar would never allow us to make money that easily.
Yeah that's the big downsize of making a game that uses real money. They have to keep nerfing anything that's too profitable. Turns things into a grind, imo.
The improvements that you suggest in this video are so easy to implement. Take what you already have and expand on it. There are already revenue agent checkpoints, introduce a bribe system and have them wave us through... Literally a week of a job at most for rockstar. When we pay to have a bar in our moonshine shack, send $25 to our post office to collect each day as our share of the profits. It’s so sad that rockstar waste their time on stupid shit like the naturalist role, and an extra 10 ranks of bounty Hunter rewards... WE STILL DONT HAVE A COWBOY ROLE ON A WILD WEST GAME! It’s ridiculous
You helped shed some light for me, on The Moonshiner role in Red Dead. I'm getting to that point of upgrades but, only for my still for now. I've been pondering the thought of the bar but didn't see much point in it now. ...the still is all that matters... I think to this day, certain people have a huge disdain for government, sticking it's nose in everyone's buisness. And that fuels individuals to continue to 'enterprise by moonlight'. As always, your vids are informative and fun to learn by. Love the fact that a professor plays the same game as a bunch of us do, for the simple reasons of the time period, some historical accuracy and it's just plain fun. Thanks and 'Keep' em coming!' ...yup, sticking with the liquor...😂
I was thinking about the fences in the main game. I’d never heard the term before playing rdr2. Don’t know what historical info is out there is on this criminal profession, but that might make an interesting video. Were there actual horse and wagon fences? How did it actually work? You could also tie in horse and cattle rustling. Looking forward to your future videos!
I can't answer your questions about fences in the past, but I can say that there are modern day fences for stolen goods but less and less as time goes on.
Idk when the term came about, but it was used in the 1950's. There was a female fence in NYC in the 1870's(?) I believe she did get caught, briefly, got away with most of the cash too.
Really enjoyed the video, and learned a bit about Moonshining. I've have been playing Red Dead Redemption 2 for almost a year now, and I have always been hoping Rockstar would fix a few things such as giving us straight gunbelts! Also really liked your banjo playing. Keep up the good work.

Something to remember is even today a good lump (25%) of alcohol consumed is "illict", thought that can mean anything from rock gut moonshine to smuggled fine wine, or defying religious based prohibitions.
7:50 So, my idea that we should be hiding our moonshine inside of our trader wagon deliveries is historically accurate? I always felt it strange that Moonshiner requires Trader to be leveled a little bit but there was nothing actually tying the roles together outside of Cripps creeping up Maggie. I was hoping we'd build Cripps a Tannery improving his efficiency, hide the moonshine business under the tannery so the smell (and Cripps) could detour any suspicion and desire to investigate. Then use our perfectly legitimate business endeavor from the tannery delivery to hide the moonshine and make an extra stop to offload the shine with no suspicion. Of course I'd also like to own our own saloon or even hotel. Where Cripps can set aside some meat from our animals for meals, Maggie brings in the shine.. all while we take in passive revenue from these and room rentals. Toss in a gambling role with a card shark main NPC that we can hire on to ensure the house always wins, and we'll be rich! XD

Holy shit all your recommendations for the moonshine shack are great but sadly I doubt rockstar will ever implement them. Although I hope they prove me wrong. Especially with bribing the revenue agents. I've been wanting that feature for a while now.
Improvements to the Moonshiner role, you say? Being able to choose from a range of different cooks. Because gosh darn it Marcel if you ain't Cripps 2.0.
im watching your back catalogue since i only just found you. loving every thing i hear and see. it brings more life to my love of the game. what about the horses and the tack making a good subject. totally a missed opportunity for rockstar with all the wild horses out there waiting to be caught tamed and sold.
I demand in some form an episode in the future on female outlaws and criminals of the west. Some lets say uninterested folk think there were none. There were plenty, Pearl Hart, Rose Dunn, a certain Myra Maybelle Shirley Reed Starr. Even serial killers like Kate Bender. Its an overlooked part of the west and I'd die for an episode on that. Not just because I play a female character and I'm used to having to answer why I go by Myra Rose Hart. Oh and good video of course.
Thanks Tyler! I came across some female moonshiners in the archives. One, it was said, was so beautiful that every time a revenue agent went to shut her down they fell in love with her, and failed at their job. If you pause it on the articles talking about moonshine poisoning, one of them is about a woman poisoning a man with tainted moonshine.

Really appreciate that, man! Super motivating!
Man I would love for you to create an economy/price mod for the game. Putting every item in their rightful 1899 price.
Hear that, Rockstar? You need me.
Another great video, highly informative and detailed. Great job!!! 🤘👏👏👏👏
Thanks Bruno!
Nice video man!!!
"Lips that touch liquor shall not touch ours."
"Deal."
Good man
I like the moonshiner role because it's a relatively simple, guaranteed way to make money, but especially because I come from a family of moonshiners (though more post-Prohibition days than 1890s).
6:52 better known as the See You Next Tuesdays
Just found you’re channel and legit the best thing ever. Love your room I film in
Thanks buddy!
Thanks and 'Keep' em coming!'
...yup, sticking with the liquor...😂
Thanks Mack! Glad you enjoyed the vid!
Yeah I actually never knew about them
I like this
I can't answer your questions about fences in the past, but I can say that there are modern day fences for stolen goods but less and less as time goes on.
Idk when the term came about, but it was used in the 1950's.
There was a female fence in NYC in the 1870's(?) I believe she did get caught, briefly, got away with most of the cash too.
Nice banjo skills
Man I just wish they would make more content just so I could see more of these videos! Looking foward to all of it!
Thanks Giorno!
Haha he called you Giorno (not a bad thing)
Really enjoyed the video, and learned a bit about Moonshining. I've have been playing Red Dead Redemption 2 for almost a year now, and I have always been hoping Rockstar would fix a few things such as giving us straight gunbelts! Also really liked your banjo playing. Keep up the good work.
Thank you, Simmons! Appreciate you subscribing as well!
I've been playing since last August, almost a year damn
Honestly the history in itself is remarkably interesting, where can I access these archives?
Sure, British Online Archives (Paid), Library of Congress Online Archives (Free), NYT Archives (Pay), JSTOR (Pay- unless you're a student/faculty at a college), books.
@@ManvsHistory Thanks man, will be sure to check these out 🤘
Something to remember is even today a good lump (25%) of alcohol consumed is "illict", thought that can mean anything from rock gut moonshine to smuggled fine wine, or defying religious based prohibitions.
bro i live in calhoun in gordon county. pretty cool seeing this on a video.
This quality of work deserves more subscribers, Awesome work!!
Excellent historical work and knowledge of the game
XD
Lots of good ideas to build on the moonshiner role!
Do a video on historical accuracy of gun prices and availability of some foreign guns please would be awesome.
What about the Gangs in rdr2 like the Van de Linde Gang, Lemoney Gang,Colmes Gang,The Mufrees etc.
Fascinating as always!! 👏🏻
Thanks so much for your Patreon pledge, Ashley! You're awesome!
@@ManvsHistory I absolutely LOVE your content and was so happy to be able to support you in another way!! Can't wait to see your channel grow and develop. 😁❤️
Im not ganna lie the banjo got me
Mainly because me and a buddy mine joke constantly about hearing banjos in the woods
As they say, 'If you hear a banjo, paddle faster.'
I’m trying so hard right now not to throw so much angry words at the IRS right now
Thank you for making my request a reality. I'm glad I live in a place where I can buy all the moonshine and fireworks I want all year round. I hope your patreon does really well man I'll keep watching and upvoting your videos aslong as you keep making them. Have a blessed day.
Thanks Ian, really appreciate you providing so much support! Very cool.
How many moonshiners got trapped in black screens when they tried to sell their products, must have been many.
Happened all the time in history. They'd just black out and enter a coma.
@@ManvsHistory Errr... I guess that counts.
God he is best than my history teacher like he doesn’t do no clickbait gets down to details and still has fun big fan
Thank you, Conman! Much obliged!
@@ManvsHistory no problem do u wanna be friends
@@connorsoutdoors7339 Sure!
@@ManvsHistory yes
I love your videos please make more. I binge watched them all lol
Deliverance, great film. Duelling Banjos is so iconic of the time.
Glad I'm not the only one who got that reference
6:10 *I'm gonna make you squeal like a pig boah,* I love that movie
I love your channel man
Thanks T-Rex!
Holy shit all your recommendations for the moonshine shack are great but sadly I doubt rockstar will ever implement them. Although I hope they prove me wrong. Especially with bribing the revenue agents. I've been wanting that feature for a while now.
I love these videos dude, keep up the awesome content. Just watched your role video and loved it
Really appreciate that, thank you Matt!
R* should employ you as a researcher or in a think tank of they have one. Great vid brother 👍
I'd dig it. Higher ed is headed down a bad path, so I'd be down. Thanks for watching, Legend!
Do you think you could make a video on the accuracy of portraits in Red Dead Online? Both self, and posse portraits
Great video
Can you talk about the Weapons and Tools some Cowboys had and if the ones you can get and have in RedDeadII are Accurate?
Improvements to the Moonshiner role, you say? Being able to choose from a range of different cooks. Because gosh darn it Marcel if you ain't Cripps 2.0.
Too true, Poe.
im watching your back catalogue since i only just found you. loving every thing i hear and see. it brings more life to my love of the game. what about the horses and the tack making a good subject. totally a missed opportunity for rockstar with all the wild horses out there waiting to be caught tamed and sold.
Horse video was released but pulled a while back. I'll be reposting it this week, so stay tuned, Keith!
Please start and end all your videos with you playing the banjo as a intro n outro that would be amazing
Found your channel already love it
Thanks YoMo!
You have to play more banjo in another video. I love the banjo
Rockstar needs to listen to your ideas man wow
IDEA : Gun Price's I think it would be pretty cool to see the real Price's. Good vids
Just to give you a base the Mauser Pistol IRL costed 30 dollars, now make this 1667% higher than you have the in game price
5k subs? Your channel is skyrocketing.
Thanks buddy!
I didnt even know this wasn't made already lol
@@ManvsHistory Now that's something I didn't know. Fascinating history there, guess no matter the time period of occupation, if you look hard enough women will show up in some form.
@@LadyTylerBioRodriguez Of course! Just have to know where to look!
Bro HOW MANY people in Hot Springs, Arkansas were drinking bad moonshine?
I saw at least 3 different articles
Ha! The South loves their moonshine! ...and apparently Hot Springs, Arkansas in particular...
Can we get some more if you playing the banjo? That's awesome!
Great video! As always 😄
Mountain Dew is a slang term for moonshine, and was developed as a chaser. Interestingly enough, the final recipe entries were given to grade school kids to vote which flavor they liked best. :)
Edit: those women in the WCTU photo were hideous lol. The only way any guy would want to kiss them was he was raging drunk!
🤣🤣🤣
Really interesting video! 👍
