Love your channel, just subscribed. Very useful advices. Have to catch up on your older videos. ❤ from Fiji Islands
Nice vids bro thanx for the videos
Very nice ute ronny lookin forward to the builds 🤙🏻
Great video with lots of useful advice. Thank you!
I felt your pain when you hit the side step. Absolute legend, love the videos.
Took my stock standard dmax on the holland track solo, and also down to bremer bay beaches with in the first 3000kms. Driving tracks in a stock car is heaps of fun.
Great choice & review Ronny! The 79 & the new rig complement each other perfectly1 can’t wait to watch you put it through its paces.
I love how much i can relate to this, i am from perth and i have got a hilux sr 2017 new, i have done a side step from going into a rut and get 700-800km per tank. love these videos !
I love your journey in upgrading your new Hilux! I agree about rear lockers- unbeatable! I slowly upgraded my 2003 4 Runner over the years and it's unstoppable on rugged obstacles. Can't wait to see your future videos showing the upgrades!
Hi Ronny, Thankyou so very much for this series of review on the latest Toyota Hilux. I have been undecided for quite a long time between various 4x4 utes for offroad, especially beach driving and camping. After watching each of your very informative vids, I have become very swayed towards this Hilux, and of course: I trust your opinions with the utmost of respect. Looking forward to the vids that follow........... Cheers mate :)
Just subscribed! Great content, good luck with the new toy!
Loved the video, good job, please keep showing the limitations of the car before each mod to be added..
What camera are you using in this? Looks great. Keep up the good work champ 😁
I think he is using Canon 90d
Elis 🤣
@@VeryCoolJeep Canon 5D mk 4
Did you just 'champ' him?
Watch ur back susie for using champ!
I love these rough as guts edits, straight to the point, means your busy, Proud as punch guys.
Been waiting for this
Hey Ronny, love the video!
What size tyre are you looking at putting on the hilux?
Ronny Dahl I’m so stoked to see that you’re seemingly going to less extreme mods!! So cool!!
Good vid Ronny, can’t wait to see what you modify and the end result! Over landing trip in Botswana I’m debating to rent a 79 or the cheaper to rent Hilux. Looking forward to your next Vlogs. Cheers from 🇨🇦
Ur a legit bro. Pls keep posting vid 😀
Awesome Truck, awesome video. I have a question... When you activate the rear diff locker, the traction control for the front tires is still working?
DO NOT FORGET !!!!
extend 5!!!! breathers:
near fuelfilter:
- front diff
- ADD (automatic disconnecting differential). [prone to water ingress and expensive!!!]
on firewall:
- gearbox
- reduction box
- rear diff
For transparency and for us on a budget, can you give a there-abouts pricing on the mods you put on as well? Looking forward to this!
Agreed
Spot on Dan .... Transparency is what we need ....
100%
There can be biiiig discrepancies between prices of items... and thats not just me saying hes got "famous guy" prices. Everyone can get things for different prices depending on where you are/outlet/trade price's etc. Would probably be best to have a gander yourself for local prices as he chucks the mods on,
@@JD3industries I get that, hence the "there -abouts" in my question.
Hey Ronny - the Hilux doesn't actually have 279mm ground clearance. I believe that was the figure originally quoted by Toyota when it was released in 2016, but they corrected it to 225mm. The Fortuner had a similar (incorrect) figure quoted. Stick a tape measure under the rear diff to check.
I'm wondering about that too. Toyota Says 310mm on Double Cab 289mm on Extra Cab and about 230mm on Single Cab.
Thx for the vid. Can you please tell me what you have to do with your diffs? I haven't understood the word. Thanks.
Ronny are you going Steel or Alloy wheels on the Luxy?
Congratulations ronny you are legend brother
Would be cool to see super flexy rear leaf setup. Longer shocks shackles ect
Ronny you are a true legend
Nice Hilux Ronny , can't wait to see the mods . You got a mention on "MATT"S OFF ROAD RECOVERY" today at the end of his video , "RECOVERY RANT" was the name of the vid , he does a lot of recoveries and he reckons TOW BALL recovery was fine in most cases when you have nothing else to use , a lot of others agreed with him . He had a link to your video on the dangers using tow ball recovery and seemed to think it a joke :-)
Yeah I saw that was poor form in the way he said it. Getting lots of people taking out of context now.
Are you extending all breathers or just the rear? I'm not sure about the Hilux but in the Tacoma the front diff, transmission, and t-case breathers are already run into the engine bay, but they sit pretty low.
Literally picking up my 2021 SR5+ in 6 hours but have come back to watch your whole Luxy serious again lol.
THANK YOU FOR SHARE VIDEO
Great video. Jerry cans or long range fuel tank?
will your new tyres and rims not need a lift kit? what size are you going?
Awesome mate! 🤠
Glad ya had a great Moab trip here in the states, Cheers 🍺
Hope ya visit again..
Lake Havasu, Az. USA
I bought a 2019 Tacoma and I had all the same thoughts. Keep it stock as long as I could, learn the truck. Upgrade what is necessary. Sliders, 2" lift, 285's. Also have a roof rack(beds to short), lights, comms, dual battery. Ok it can get out of hand but its all necessity. 👍🤘😎🤙🍻
hey mate, love the vid. By any chance, can you send me the link for the navigation voice delete please. I cant seem to find that video Thanks
Nice one, yeh i had very little mods on my dmax when I went on my esperance trip, so glad I had put better and bigger tires 265 75 16, def the best first mod, also where did you get the yellow gme from cheers
I did exactly the same thing to my HiLux, first 4WD outing and bent the passenger side-step... 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️
Thank you for the tip on rock sliders, they've now bumped up my priority list... 👍👍👍
FYI: Those interior lights need to be swapped out for LED'S, already swapped mine out, they'll be heaps better for when you're recording at night... 😉😉😉
I've got an Isuzu MU-X and also bent a side step first time out. Replaced with rock sliders before any damage done to sills or doors. Factory side steps are rubbish, same as highway terrain tyres on 18 inch rims.
LEDs are good in the long term as well. if you have a car for enough decades, incandescent interior lights will cook the lenses.
Follow up to the YT commercials on this video. First time viewing it (on mobile on YT official app) and I see 6 yellow timeline indicators where ads will show up. That’s about every 3 minutes on this 18 minute video. I don’t ad block because I want YT to pay the channel. Enjoy the new Hilux. I have a IFS + IRS 2009 Expedition and looking to see how you get on with that suspension.
I love your list of first mods...
First I'll get bed liner.
First I'll get mud tires and smaller rims.
First I'll get rock sliders.
First I'll get diff breathers.
First I'll get tinted windows and vinyl decals.
First I'll get fuel filter.
Hahaha... glad there other people as decisive as me :)
Keeping two very expensive vehicles, running costs, mods - all I can say is the man is loaded!
i am considering buying a pdp breather kit. Just wondering what difference is between them and the cheaper ones on ebay. i know you get what you pay for but what extra do you get for 120 buck more
keen as for the live show
Hey Ronny, what size tyres are you thinking?
Cooper discoverer ST Maxx. Those are the hybrid tires. Also called RT tires (rugged trail). Tires are great. Nitto ridge grappler, Goodyear duratrac, Toyo open country R/T, all are really good
you just answered the diff locker vs. tire question ive been looking for. Guess I'm paying the extra cash for a locker. :D
Another Amazing Video Ronnie, Keep it coming along and Vehicle looks great.
Q:Will you need to fit a Catch Can when you fit Diff Breathers etc.
I have a Disco 3, 07 Model and wondered if I should fit One instead of Blocking off ERG Valves. Any advice would be greatly Received.
Cheers Mate. Amazing Channel, a lot better than Others. :'-)
Hey Ronny, how do you find the Hilux in auto as apposed to manual? Would you switch to a manual Hilux if you had the chance now that you've tried automatic or are you happy with it in auto?
I live in South Africa - a Hilux dominated 4x4 country - the stock Hilux 2.8 which I own is far too low and suspension way to soft - a basic 2 inch/50mm OME or similar suspension upgrade is the definite first upgrade that’s needed - with this upgrade alone you would have sailed over those obstacles - the track you tested would be regarded as a grade two tester track - no big mods needed for that besides a suspension lift - the suspension lift will allow taller tyres to be fitted - with 17 inch rims one can only fit 265/70/65 due to the larger brake calipers (compared to other brands) - with just doing these two mods I’ve easily done grade 3 trails with stock running boards - my next upgrade will be rock sliders as a lot of our grade 3 trails involve a lot of very rocky downhills
Does anyone know what brand or where to buy the Interior storage/pocket at 15:40?
Hey Ronny. I have the 2017 sr5 lux. I noticed @ 12:23 in your video you have the bar reading in current fuel consumption. With a couple or a few button pushes in the menu, you can actually change the current (L/100) to a decimal reading. You’ll appreciate that much better than what is displayed from standard. It was done by myself over a couple of years ago now, so I can’t really remember how to do it off the top of my head, but it’s fairly straight forward. Try it, you’ll love it I reckon
Put some Toyo Open Country R/T or Nitto Ridge Grapplers on it, I put some 265/70r17 on my Navara with stock lift and the R/Ts are grippy and quiet. They're a hybrid M/T and A/T for some aggression but still comfortable when travelling on the road. Great video can't wait to see more!
There's a book thing in the glove box! Has like a bunch of scribbling on paper! Tells you things like what bulbs are in your headlights and stuff! There are pictures for you Ronny! Mind you, you probably can't see because of all that night driving.
Hi Ronny, you should do a Wheel/tire comparison. (Stock tires/rims vs new tire/rims)
Paint the thread and compare footprint of both tires at same PSI (25/20/15) and do a set track before and after.
I have been testing Cooper ST Maxx for the last year in Africa... they are working great as a tyre designed to be betwen AT and Muds.
You mentioned diff lockers. does it have a front locker?
front shape of the hilux at 5:22 ... loved it
Toyos rugged terrain tyres are the go! Such a good tyre
awesome mate, ive brought myself a stock as 2019 sr hilux a few months ago the only thing ive done is get all terrains and a bullbar fitted 2 days ago. im super new to 4x4 but want to kit this out to live in on my weeks off. keen for the next vids, got my pen and paper ready ;)
Cant wait for mine
Ronny I’m not gonna tell you what tyres you should put on but I have had the RTs from Toyo for 13,000ks now awesome tyre great Offroad and on the highway have a look at them when making ya choice.
what is the hand support on 79 please?
give faulken wildpeak at3s i have always used them and i love them and they are cheap compared to other models, would love to hear your thoughts on them
I’ve got them on my 2012 Hilux bro. Love them
Had on my escape and now courier, cant rate highly enough
Got them on my Pajero Sport, unreal tyre
he said he wants something between AT and MT, I'm guessing it won't be the Wildpeaks.
Braden Bartlett Maybe the Cooper Discovery S/T MAXX would be suitable.
Nice rig
Really interested to see how this Hilux progresses. We picked up a new pre-facelift SR5 in July, the sale price was too good to wait and we are loving it. Apart from a tubliner and rhinorack we are pre-mod, so we are keenly following your updates.
Gotta love that turbo diesel sound...
i use to get roughly 850-900km on a tank at 8.7L / 100 on my 2019 hilux n80 2.8, mainly in eco... same colour and all just few more mods like bullbar, winch exc...now with a 2.5 inch lift on 33s on 16” rims i get roughly 550-650km on a full tank now on eco with the lift and tyres i get roughly 11.5L / 100km
Hi ronny. Are you trying out the new maxxis razr at811s on the hilux? ;)
Ohh they look awesome!
Love from India, Ronnie!!! I am going to do changes in my Everest based on what you do and recommend for your IFS Hilux...... hope there wont be any significant issues
How comfortable is a hilux on road ?Is it prado like or ranger like?
Finally, a common sense approach to off roading!
8:40 Saying it that way you kinda ask for it, so here it comes :D When there is one place where not to speed, it's school zones mate. Sorry, dad reflexes...Congrats to your new car, always awsome to pick up a new one. And man, that stock ground clearance on the Hilux really is amazing. You do pay for it in pure Diesel, but that thing is suprisingly offroad worthy. Keep it up mate.
new generation Hilux owner with 265/75 General Grabber Muddies on 16 inch rims tyres are 803mm diameter, have 25k kms on them already, Will probably easily get 50k kms, these tyres are continental and are excellent, the noise on rd is minimal and designed to lose the noise mostly after 100 k's an hr, cheers!
Any DPF advice/opinions/concerns/plans of attack would be appreciated Ronny!
What was your thinking towards choosing an auto over a manual box?
Great stuff mate. Looking forward to seeing what this car becomes. I just picked up my Facelift SR5 the other day - Crystal Pearl. Its un-real. Don't think ill be taking it off-road just yet though. Query: What tyre pressure would you recommend for city/casual highway/main road driving? I received the car from the dealership with the tyre pressure at 39 PSI. However, the PSI recommended by Toyota is 29-32 (depending on weight within the vehicle). Your thoughts? Have just reduced it to 30.
Take a look at www.expeditionaustralia.com.au/2016/03/what-tyre-pressures-do-i-run-on-road-trips/
whats with this guys adds? holy sheeeet
Toyo R/Ts are definitely worth a look for the new rubber.
If you had to pick one, both worked, would it be this or the 79?
I put a set of southern cross rock sliders on my 2017 Hilux and they are a great product and Brown Davis makes a great 30 micron pre filter kit with a mount that sits next to air box I happy with both mods
I have a 2017 model. The first fuel up by toyota was 81lt, not 70lt Ronny. The light comes on with about 120km to go.
I have a 2inch lift, bilstiens, muddies, winch etc but I kept the steps. I like bending them and I've lent the whole car on them a few times with no panel damage.
Very happy You bought a Hilux! I also want to buy that car maybe next year. Nice to see what to do with it :)
Great review Ronny. The high beams are LED mate, not HID. An easy way to know if a new vehicle has HID lights is if it has headlight washers. A new vehicle MUST have headlight washers if it comes factory with HID lights. A little tip for ya mate from a Toyota mechanic. AND the headlights on the SR5 are auto-levelling LED lights too. Look at your left leaf spring and you'll see the auto-levelling sensor which measures load in the tub and adjusts the headlights according to vehicle pitch angle.
Great video. Out of curiosity you mentioned that you had given the new Hilux a good thrashing. I had always thought you had to run the motor in and not drive it to hard for the first 1000 km,s or has technology advanced so much that you don’t need to do that anymore? Thanks
Most are pre run in at the factory
I have the exact same radio in my muxy.
Better than hand held, but not as good as mouted uhf in my ute.
That unit can be mounted permanently in vehicles wit upgraded antenna
Any chance you'll be reviewing the 2021 Rugged X Hilux when it releases @Ronny Dahl?
Don't forget some recovery points!
I'm sure you got the tow package so the rear is easy enough but I'd say the front recovery point should be amongst the 1st mods before a trip.
All-Weather Mats
Rear Recovery Point
UHF Handheld
Rock Sliders
Off-Road Tires
Snatch Strap
Tire Puncture Kit
Front Recovery Point (rated)
10l Water
Big grin once inside the 79 👍
Why didnt you choose the rugged hilux??
What insurance did you get??
My stock 2017 hilux with the stock 18" rims has done BillyGoat track at Bendleby Ranges. I also used that same GME magnetic UHF radio for a trip from my home town on the Eyre Peninsula SA to NT & across to WA and down the Connie Sue hwy, at times I would have been at least 5km's behind the lead vehicle where the reception started to cut in & out. It is a really good unit.
Yeah i'd of stuck with the 18's aswell as i assume he will be going to a larger tyre anyway so sidewall will increase that way . Also better on the road imo on 18's
I do intend though on dropping to 17" steel rims with the new aggressive Maxis RAZR ATs since i've already stuffed one of the standard 18" alloy rims... LOL
@@wendza1473 I was wondering if thats what ronnie was going to try too. I run the Razr MT's as i needed tyres and couldn't wait for the AT's to launch
How low do you guys air down on the 18s?
Whats the fuel gonna be once all the bolt ons are added? 14/100km.
9:36 satisfying plastic crunch
i'd love to see a progressive weight as you do thesxe modifications. a weight fully fueled and loaded before each trip, just to see how you go. and a comparison with the 79 or one of your support vehicles as well. best video would be a surprise weighbridge for all vehicles on the trip.
Adding in fuel usage change after each weight gaining mod would be good too.
Diff lock is fantastic method 💯👍
I am desert trainer in Dubai I know it's really worked hard well done buddy!
Will you be putting a catch can on it as well probably a good move PS love you show lots of hits and tips
Do you have Tundra's in Australia? Can you recommend a locker rear diff for the Tundra 10.5 inch rear diff??
Nah no Tundras here mate
Hi Ronny - Apart from the emotional aspect (you owned a Hilux before), is there any compelling reason you would still prefer the Hilux over the Ranger, the latter being the 2nd most sold Ute?
I think most likely because in Perth the roads out bush are absolutely gruelling on any vehicle. Toyota in WA has a rep for durability, Ford....not so much
Toyota has a rep for durability everywhere. The only Ford known to be super reliable is an F-150.
That's interesting... thanks both, Adam and Alexandar, for your insight.
Proud Hilux Owner, will be looking forward to the mods you will be doing but maan that Land Cruiser is beast
Ron the 18 inch are fine if you go taller tyres. Lots of choice now like Wildpeaks or Duratracs both in LT guise. Would like to see a Provent 200 catch can, rock sliders and good ATs and stock otherwise. Cheers
