When I bought my Hulix, one of the first things I was gonna do was replace the tyres. 4 years later, I'm still driving on the Michelin Latitude road tyres it came with. Greasy hills, muddy bog holes, rocky slopes - I haven't found anything yet where the tyres have stopped me progressing forward. They're about worn out - now definitely time to upgrade.
Ronny, apart from sand, forget about the diff locker. Let the traction control system do its work and the vehicle will go a lot further. I learnt this from experience.
It’s great to see such an honest take on this Hilux with real tests. Many other channels blatantly bash the Hilux for the sole purpose of upselling other brands. Great video👍🏼
Michael Grace I had Continental Cross Contact HTs on my pickup. Very impressed. Only replaced it because it can’t safely compete with ATs on rocky sections
I’d say tyre pressure had more to do with it in this test as apposed to tyre terrain type. As he said, if it was wet it’s a totally different story. Would be good to see a comparison on a wet track with h/t at 15psi and m/t at say 30psi. Same tyre size etc
@@Ronny_Dahl Hi Ronny, nice video! I have a question, PSI related, when deflating the tires and considering the tray was empty, would it have been better to have more PSI in the front since it is heavier? I'm thinking it may protect the vehicle a little bit more by raising the front a little. Any thoughts? Cheers!

Try the course without the locker engaged. The traction control is better than you think. I reckon you will be surprised. I have been really impressed with my Fortuner. With locker engaged, TC is off. Lifting the front wheel with open front diff and no TC risks shattering a CV on grounding, whereas the TC controls wheel spin pretty well. Give it a go...

Rudy B Ranger’s traction control system still works on the front wheels when the rear locker is engaged, as opposed to most other utes where no traction control is available when rear axle is locked
Ford Ranger is better in every way. Hilux is very over rated. Ranger will also be more reliable due to ford overbiilding it tough and also it does everything easy and no need to flog the vehicle
I just took my completely standard gen 2 pajero on very low tread road tires out on Saturday, went as well as everyone else who had a little more lift and muddies, it's surprising what a standard vehicle will do without any of the "essential" modifications in the right conditions

Why.... its a 4wd not a mall crawler. Taking a stock 4wd out on the tracks is the best fun you can have. Way more challenging than a heavily modified 4x4.
Nice test of the stock hilux I've had the down hill assist on low range 1st gear going down steep decents at Mount Arden Argadells (Quorn) barely had to touch the brakes. It worked really well. Was quite impressed. I did have it on going down the Ridgetop track at Bendleby Ranges and from memory it was too fast and even with my foot hard on the brake I was still slipping/sliding down although that decent is full of holes and shaley rock, however I may have had it in 2nd gear low (I just can't remember now), first gear low with down hill assist does work though. (2017 SR5) My hilux didn't come with side steps had to have them added as an extra but mine are metal thank goodness, plastic would be a waste of $$$
@Ronny Dahl just regarding the clearance. Toyota are most likely quoting running clearance to get 270mm plus. Genuine ground clearance will be about 220mm (under the lowest point) just like the rest of the ute market. A bit of a marketing trick by Toyota.
Hey Ronny. Thought you were going to recommend some mods as part of each review. That’s a key reason I am watching. Keen to get a hilux when the prices settle down. Love your work. Cheers
Yes the mods will cone but I had to test it as is first and the next one was on the sand followed by a short trip. After that the mods will start to happen and I’ll have good reasons for it
Hey Ronny, put the traction control to the test in the flex test again. It’s so good you don’t need the locker a lot of the time. Just put some Yokohama G003’s on mine, they’re so good and quite, you should have a serious look at them.
Another important remark. you do a splash test, the bumper is designed to push water OUT of the right upper wheel arch allowing for some water crossings without a snorkel. Once you mount another steel bumper you'll likely cut down those guards actually pushing water INTO the air intake. So mounting a steel bumper removes about all the wading depth you had, make sure you do a snorkel as well then! (Speaking from experience, took cups full of water out of the airbox once with a 2015 hilux)
Highway terrain are great at everything unless it's mud. I think Ronny has big balls risking a shinny new ute just for us. In my opinion, a stock vehicle with decent traction control is more fun than a fully moded one.

11:15 dunno about your proclivities, but my rallying days taught me to place a big rubber mat under the engine bay, to stop the splashes. Just a part of preparation.
The highway terrains can be very capable when used carefully off-road. There limits in mud are obvious but I've always said it can be a case of muddies allowing you to get much further into trouble. The real serious limit of the H/Ts are the sidewall, especially on broken limestone tracks very common on the WA coast. The very common AT 2s stock on lots of new Fourbie's slice open very easily...the sidewall is incredibly thin. DAMHIK.
Good test Ronny . Those sidesteps are doing a job of protecting the doors so if they are damaged who cares when your getting rock sliders anyway . Sand driving will be interesting with road tyres as in my experience they mostly just sink and you bottom out on the chassis no matter what pressures your at . Yes diff lockers are the go to keep going when 2 or more wheels are lifted . When you have a stock 4WD you have to be very picky as to what terrain your going to tackle :-)
I found on the previous model, engaging the diff lock disengaged the traction control. Often I was better off leaving the diff lock off as the traction control worked really well. Have you done a comparison of the traction control verses the rear diff lock?

Thank you for the video it did help me with what i am looking at to buy. Water crossings and fire tracks are common in what i do. I am not a full offroader but i do get down to rivers and down some messy trails. I currently drive a santa fe and what i need is something that will be in between that and 4wd full time offroader. So far i have taken away that will need to upgraded to AT tyres and bigger rims and water protection in the engine bay area which i suspect maybe for both upgrades anywhere from $1500 to $3000 on top of dealer price.
Not just the diff lock, the traction control on toyotas since 2010 is incredible, try the same course with the rear locker disengaged and just traction control
Emil Rozkoszny Agreed, I’d actually argue (and I own a 2017 Hilux) that it is more capable with the traction control only compared to the rear diff lock! I would have thought Ronny would have tested this....once that rear locker is in the front is fully open. He’s missing out....I know and have seen a lot of people go straight for the locker when the traction control would have done it easier.
@@watpat4930 100% mate, my 150 prado has only tc, people can not believe it is not locked, as you mentioned in many situations just having the tc driving the front and rear wheel rather than just having the rear locker engaged will provide more traction overall

Fortuner sounds like would fit the bill for you.
Hi Ronny, I have just bought a brand new 2022 sr5, just wondering if there is a breaking in period.
At 0:46, Ronny testing a secret vehicle.
The new Toyota Hulix.
Haha I saw that too...happens a few times!
The locker on my 2WD van is the same as a 4x4 with no lockers. We both have 2 wheels spinning, just mine are both pushing .
How would you compare traction control vs diff lock?
Great video, very impressive for a stock 4WD
Gday Ronny, the only negative from this video was the background music, it was really distracting. I am looking forward to seeing how the hilux progresses through its transformation.
After watching these stock Hilux videos, I've changed my mind haha... I think rock sliders come first :)
Push it to its limit, before spending a cent. Find the weakness then make a calculated decision if its worth forking out. Thanks Ronny I new we were on the right track. Our new ute is very capable on hiway tyres. But unfortunately it came without a rear diff locker. Any suggestions on where to start look.
Would be great to see a modified Hilux do a trip with yours relatively stock.
Is the 279 ground clearance from diff to ground or ground to undercarriage?
It would be nice if you can do a review on the active traction control using low range without difflock
What’s biggest size tyres you can fit on those ???
Great video mate, but should compare the hilux with your 79. All factory Ute's do roughly the same thing as the hilux. Would be great to see a head to head comparison, hilux vs worked 79 on the same track.
You might see this in future when Torbs brings the big beast and I bring the Hilux
@@Ronny_Dahl cheers mate. That would be great to see. Not many comparisons with a 79 vs city tractor.
New Hilux looks great but I'll be getting new DMax in few years, always better value especially with the 2021 model
Triton us best value on market atm
@@Devourer221 The Triton is a big bag of turds.
Great choice. The new D-Max finally looks like an incredible all rounder. That and the Triton would be my top picks for a new ute.
Hilux is cheaper than the new DMax and from my experience Hilux go for longer without repairs.
@@wikkidme755 how much experience could you possibly have when both of these vehicles are literally about a month old?
Hey Ronnie how much lift do you reckon you'll put under it??
