Thank you so much for making this video. You really show how much fun an entry level vehicle can be in this hobby. Totally excited to keep shopping :)
It is great to see a comprehensive and technical offroad analysis of a stock car from a competent offroad driver. Also great to see how much your channel has grown of the years. Keep up the great content Ronny!
Hilux: screams
Ronny: scraping, but only for a short time
Hilux: continues singing the song of a metal shredder
tthis is funny because it is so accurate XD
Its cringeworthy
😆
Ronny best show you have done yet. I did the same with my np d23 when i bought it , water crossings came after the snorkel. Love it keep it up.
Most satisfying vid on the channel by far.
one of the most realistic testing of a standard truck, stressing the review is based on the day’s testing. thanks.
Great watching this series with the Lux, covered various aspects well and looking forward to this story unfolding
Thanks Ronny! A really capable vehicle.
Love your videos bro, so proud you from WA :)
When I bought my Hulix, one of the first things I was gonna do was replace the tyres. 4 years later, I'm still driving on the Michelin Latitude road tyres it came with.
Greasy hills, muddy bog holes, rocky slopes - I haven't found anything yet where the tyres have stopped me progressing forward. They're about worn out - now definitely time to upgrade.
Hulix
@@modestyblaise08
Yes, check out Ronny's captions.
He certainly let the cat out of the bag about Toyota's all electric Hulix.
Great vid. Love your attitude
Those leafs in the rear flex surprisingly well!! great vid cheers Ronny
@Jbog07 Yeah oath!! impressive what they can get out of em these days aye
Thank you Ronny looking to get one Hilux this april once in the UK cheers mate watching with anticipation Paul :-)
You're my hero Ronny
Nice one Ronny!
Love the way Hilux was spelt wrong at the start: "Hulix" 😀😀
Start and every time
hulix haha who licks what haha
😂😂😂
Hahaha
Almost makes ya wanna get a Hilux 😂😂 another good video mate 🤘🏾
Ronny, apart from sand, forget about the diff locker. Let the traction control system do its work and the vehicle will go a lot further. I learnt this from experience.
New series: “unmodified” testing stock vehicles on that course
I like that idea
I like that idea too. The common path to heavy camper doesn't gel with the direction I'd like to take a dual cab: have the touring gear Bolt on/bolt off as needed and still be able to use the tray for a tip run.
@@Ronny_Dahl first one I'd like to see is a stock Colorado
Stock but new AT or MT tyre would be wise..
What tyre's are you gonna go for? Well what size mainly for me? I've got one and want to put 285/70/17s on but I've heard conflicting reports on whether they will fit or not
It’s great to see such an honest take on this Hilux with real tests. Many other channels blatantly bash the Hilux for the sole purpose of upselling other brands.
Great video👍🏼
Have one of the first Gd-6 Hilux 2016 and she"s a beast with no issues thus far! big fan Ronny. First issue was the side steps on mine and 30mm lift on the front
I can't believe how well those highway terrain tyres went. Awesome video Ronny hanging out for the next one in the dunes.
Michael Grace I had Continental Cross Contact HTs on my pickup. Very impressed. Only replaced it because it can’t safely compete with ATs on rocky sections
I’d say tyre pressure had more to do with it in this test as apposed to tyre terrain type. As he said, if it was wet it’s a totally different story. Would be good to see a comparison on a wet track with h/t at 15psi and m/t at say 30psi. Same tyre size etc
The best way to kick off a Sunday
Nice video love your in put and advice nice damn truck too.
thanks mate
New sunnies! Look good man, glad the ice dealing days are behind you
Great video Ronny! Loving the new truck!! It’s amazing what just a rear locker will do! Just took my XJ out for the first time today after installing front and rear lockers. Was definitely a challenging trail and really didn’t need to use the front locker at all. Always love when your new videos come out! ❤️🐞
Looking forward for the dunes video with this tires.. thanks mate! Cheers from Mexico
Awesome video. glad i ve kept mine stock until i know what i want
Great clip Ronny hope the Toyota service department doesn’t subscribe to your channel 😂😂 keeping it real 👍
Hahaha I think that might be a bit too late
@@Ronny_Dahl Hi Ronny, nice video! I have a question, PSI related, when deflating the tires and considering the tray was empty, would it have been better to have more PSI in the front since it is heavier? I'm thinking it may protect the vehicle a little bit more by raising the front a little. Any thoughts? Cheers!
Canning stock route would be my dream episode with this truck!
Can't wait till they let us have a diesel Hilux in the US. Really like all the informative videos. Keep up the good work Ronnie
Nice one Ronny and smart choice for a Hilux - I just bought a low-rech 2010 Hilux based on a lot of research and advice including my moderate budget for a retiree - there’s something iconic about a Toyota that all the other brands wish they had. Isuzu are ankle biting now but I’m sticking to my dependable and capable strong Hilux. Lift kit, 3mm bash plates and rear. diff locker next before the Alum jacked rear cab and wheels/tyres. John in SA
Awesome vid!!. Would love to see new tires and rock sliders. It would be great if Ronny can check the new Dmax.
just came back from a trip in my 2020 triton, I must admit the 18 in tires (HT) didn't do a bad job either, happy to see you are enjoying your new digital 4x4 Ronny, brands aside so user friendly I'm just getting used to the safety stuff sensor warning buzzers flashing dash warning take a bit to get used to and my first auto 4x4 never buying another manual.
good road test vids mate
Legendary
Totally agree, if its got a rear locker, uses it.
Nice test of the stock hilux
I've had the down hill assist on low range 1st gear going down steep decents at Mount Arden Argadells (Quorn) barely had to touch the brakes. It worked really well. Was quite impressed. I did have it on going down the Ridgetop track at Bendleby Ranges and from memory it was too fast and even with my foot hard on the brake I was still slipping/sliding down although that decent is full of holes and shaley rock, however I may have had it in 2nd gear low (I just can't remember now), first gear low with down hill assist does work though. (2017 SR5)
My hilux didn't come with side steps had to have them added as an extra but mine are metal thank goodness, plastic would be a waste of $$$
Awesome cars
Great video, very impressive for a stock 4WD
Try the course without the locker engaged. The traction control is better than you think. I reckon you will be surprised. I have been really impressed with my Fortuner.
With locker engaged, TC is off. Lifting the front wheel with open front diff and no TC risks shattering a CV on grounding, whereas the TC controls wheel spin pretty well. Give it a go...
Its no Gladiator, but I love it! Your off-roading expertise has been very helpful for me over here in the US. Keep it up, man. 🤙
Gladiator? Too long, cheap plasticy insides, terrible economy, unreliable and no dealer networks
Please another test video - Also it would be fantastic to get input on mud tires vs A/Ts and whether lift/tire size increase is really needed or not. Great videos. Very helpful.Thx!!!
When your way home is my way home Ronny hahah
I am cringing watching the hilux bottoming out. I couldn't do that to a brand new ute. Very informative video. Ronny keep up the great work
It's oddly satisfying when it's someone else's ute 🤷♂️🤣
when you get them for free its easy to do that
@@MR-dv6ms This one was paid for though.
@@rustynumbat are we sure?
Hey Ronnie how much lift do you reckon you'll put under it??
@Ronny Dahl just regarding the clearance. Toyota are most likely quoting running clearance to get 270mm plus. Genuine ground clearance will be about 220mm (under the lowest point) just like the rest of the ute market. A bit of a marketing trick by Toyota.
Ronny, do you have ATRAC system on your new Hilux? If you do, than can you please tell us what it can and what it cannot do.
Question: The traction control is working for the front tires when the rear diff locker is working? Awesome video. Awesome capabilities for a stock truck.
No the rear locker disables the ETC front and rear. Cheers
I love how capable a stock 4WD can be. They're way more capable if you're driving one owned by someone else 😉
Hi Ronny, you will be putting 33s on this, or? 285/70 R17?
Hi Ronny, I have just bought a brand new 2022 sr5, just wondering if there is a breaking in period.
ronny, i would not have missed an opportunity to get one of those old school retro looking land cruisers that you guys still get in australia. we havent been able to get a groovy vintage style land cruiser since the 80s
Thank you for the video it did help me with what i am looking at to buy. Water crossings and fire tracks are common in what i do. I am not a full offroader but i do get down to rivers and down some messy trails. I currently drive a santa fe and what i need is something that will be in between that and 4wd full time offroader. So far i have taken away that will need to upgraded to AT tyres and bigger rims and water protection in the engine bay area which i suspect maybe for both upgrades anywhere from $1500 to $3000 on top of dealer price.
Fortuner sounds like would fit the bill for you.
Im not a mechanic and I dont know alot about hill control but Im assuming the car brakes each wheel individually? If thats the case if the rear diff is locked then it cant brake the rear wheels individually meaning it wouldnt work, maybe thats why is doesnt work with the rear locker engaged? Great vid, I always look forwards to watching them sunday morning.
The Hill Descent Control along with Rear Diff lock works fine on the Ford Ranger though.
Rudy B Ranger’s traction control system still works on the front wheels when the rear locker is engaged, as opposed to most other utes where no traction control is available when rear axle is locked
@@victor503025746 Correct, and it works very well indeed. Been very useful on hills.
Ford Ranger is better in every way. Hilux is very over rated. Ranger will also be more reliable due to ford overbiilding it tough and also it does everything easy and no need to flog the vehicle
tosgem we reliably kill rangers at 300,000km up in the mines, and they cross the annual value to repair threshold about half that
I just took my completely standard gen 2 pajero on very low tread road tires out on Saturday, went as well as everyone else who had a little more lift and muddies, it's surprising what a standard vehicle will do without any of the "essential" modifications in the right conditions
What kind of michelin tires are you using ?
I have been following your testing on the Hilux. But I'm still in doubt. I own a old mazda bt50 my 2008. In 2021 i would change it but i don't know between Hilux or ranger. Did you go straight for the hilux or did you consider other pick up.
Ciao
Marco
Cant wait to get to get my fortuner with the same stuff!
Hey Ronny. Thought you were going to recommend some mods as part of each review. That’s a key reason I am watching. Keen to get a hilux when the prices settle down. Love your work. Cheers
Yes the mods will cone but I had to test it as is first and the next one was on the sand followed by a short trip. After that the mods will start to happen and I’ll have good reasons for it
Shows you how capable these modern machines are out of the box! Whether it’s a Ranger, Triton or Hilux!
Is the 279 ground clearance from diff to ground or ground to undercarriage?
Hey Ronny I got my hilux today.
But it’s doin well
Great little test for the new Lux, I pick up my SR5 next Monday, heading straight in to upgrade the HT Tyres with AT's I was thinking of upping them to 265/65/18 25mm taller, what are your thoughts Ronny?
ps. keeeping the original rims at this stage.
Do you have any plans to test the new 2021 D’Max (Stock) in the future?
i took my collie into some silty mud the other day with road tyres on sunk it to the door 3 times over once in once out and then once again on the exit. I attempted a snatch backwards didn't work so winched turned around to then cut a fallen tree to avoid my ruts still got stuck even with my tyres at 8 PSI to give me every chance. 18 inch rims with road tyres have suprised me going from muds but as soon as it gets wet the muds go on.
Awesome vid ronny, would you put rock sliders or a lift kit first?
Sliders before lift
Hilux actually performed pretty well, helps having the extras from factory 👍
That big ol' grill on the front. That thig is pretty impressive out of the box.
The highway terrains can be very capable when used carefully off-road. There limits in mud are obvious but I've always said it can be a case of muddies allowing you to get much further into trouble.
The real serious limit of the H/Ts are the sidewall, especially on broken limestone tracks very common on the WA coast. The very common AT 2s stock on lots of new Fourbie's slice open very easily...the sidewall is incredibly thin. DAMHIK.
hi mate, great review.. How's the ride of this Hilux unmodified ???
The ‘T’ in test cut off is freaking my ocd out. I would never sleep again if released a video on my channel with that happening. Great info on the new beast
You mentioned a front locker.
What have you got in mind. From what I understand there aren't many options for an ifs vehicle.
I'd also be concerned whether a front locker would put a lot of stress on ifs cvs and axles.
what's the stock ground clearance on one of these?
What’s biggest size tyres you can fit on those ???
How would you compare traction control vs diff lock?
Great review! I would use a Raptor for this
@ronny, phase 1 or phase 2?
Front lockers, 285/70r17 tires, new wheels, a 2 inch lift and skid plates.
do they make aussie locker for toyota diffs now? i'd love to watch if he went with that
Ill add skid plates to that
Holden Caulfield yes harrop lockers 👌
Where abouts in Perth hills is this??
Bud love the hilux I have a d4d and can't bring myself to part with it 450 000kms. Jyst wanted your opinion on the new triton
I would be afraid to take a new Hillux stock out like that. Good stuff.
Why.... its a 4wd not a mall crawler. Taking a stock 4wd out on the tracks is the best fun you can have. Way more challenging than a heavily modified 4x4.
Well he actually took a hulix out so he's fine
Is this the automatic or the manual gear shift ?
Time to get the bucket and sponge out!
Interestingly most capable as-is imho Ronny Dahl.
Well behaved in again mho all aspects.
What a great example of the difference that rear diff-lock makes!.
Oh I have a new name for your new beasty; "TESI" :)
In America, we call them the “oh shit handles”.
The correct name in Oz is "Jesus bars."
I’m pretty sure they are most every where he just tries to keep it PG. 😂
I call them the “fm handles” ( fuck me handles) in England
Hi Ronny, ive been hearing that the lux a super quick and responsive great traction control system..could you please do a off road video same obstacles as this one test low range with traction control off and one with the traction control ON...do not use the diff lock:) cuz when you run the diff lock it switches off the traction in the front wheels...please!!! Great video!
Ditch the chrome! Other than that an excellent video on driver skill in a stock vehicle. I off-road a daily driver and can’t bash it up nor can I modify it heavily. Cheers!
I found on the previous model, engaging the diff lock disengaged the traction control.
Often I was better off leaving the diff lock off as the traction control worked really well.
Have you done a comparison of the traction control verses the rear diff lock?
I’ll have to looking into that
Push it to its limit, before spending a cent. Find the weakness then make a calculated decision if its worth forking out. Thanks Ronny I new we were on the right track. Our new ute is very capable on hiway tyres. But unfortunately it came without a rear diff locker. Any suggestions on where to start look.
still you could try without rea locker just using traction control as i think it got traction control, with that its brakes every wheel separately so thats would be interesting to see as well.
Ronny, is the downhill assist specific to the auto transmission model, or found in the manual model too?
Not sure mate I would assume maybe not but I’m guessing
I have a 2020 hilux manual pre face lift an it has downhill assist.
It would be nice if you can do a review on the active traction control using low range without difflock
Another important remark. you do a splash test, the bumper is designed to push water OUT of the right upper wheel arch allowing for some water crossings without a snorkel.
Once you mount another steel bumper you'll likely cut down those guards actually pushing water INTO the air intake. So mounting a steel bumper removes about all the wading depth you had, make sure you do a snorkel as well then! (Speaking from experience, took cups full of water out of the airbox once with a 2015 hilux)
Yes something I’ll address at the same time and explain
Should get some Phatbars rock sliders and bash plates, my dad has them on his N80 and they go through a lot.
Doesn't that rig come with traction control? Why not give it a full shakedown without the locker since we know lockers work great on any vehicle off-road anyway.
Also, as a build idea, since you already have a hardcore 4x4 why not focus this one as a straight-up comfortable tourer?
Alloy bars for weight (although probably get steel rock sliders), underbody protection is a must, may or may not get a winch, a snorkel is a must. Paint and glass protection (clear bras or clear wraps) would be a good idea. This vehicle is FRESH. Just employ a back-to-basics off-road driving habit: low-risk line-picking, etc.
Keep the stock alloys (or not, for aesthetic reasons) but with beefier and slightly fatter rubber (not hybrid tyres though, just proper all-terrains). An engine tune would be nice, oversized trans cooler is a good thing to have once you start loading it up. Mild suspension setup, minimal lift... just a proper 70/30 (on/off road) build. Sort out diff and trans breathers and you're cleanly set-up.
Believe it or not, setups like these work almost perfect in a lot of real-world conditions. Sure, you can't abuse 'em like 79s or Patrols, but I highly doubt anyone should be flogging IFS vehicles off-road anyway. Remember: they designed rigs like these for a nice compromise between on-road and off-road use, why not amplify that philosophy? Not to mention, this way you still get to give a separate purpose for your 70-series.
I wouldn't want this to end up a 'hardcore' 4x4 on 33"+ tyres that doesn't really compare driveline & suspension-wise with the solid-axle monsters. You end up with an 'almost-there-but-not-really' build where you wonder why you didn't just stick with a solid-axle vehicle in the first place. Not to mention ruining the rather 'sporty' on-road behaviour that the new Hiluxes seem to have.
A simple slim light bar up front (Baja S8 20" combo-optics perhaps?), a few 'area lights' on a roof rack plus reverse lights and you're done with the lighting side of things. A nice 4.1 stereo setup, as well. The electronics & accessories side of things is up to whatever you need, though. I'd probably stick the battery charger setup or whatever right up against the back window (I'm assuming that it's gonna get covered up by a rear canopy, anyway), this way it's clean and straightforward and easily accessible.
A simple canopy with slide-out drawers would be nice. Seems like a shame to just lose the nice bed.
That's all, pretty much. I've been dreaming of a setup like this but don't have the bills. This is a nice alternative to reality.
Ronny, how many inches are you gonna lift the SR?
Yes...cant wait for that part...
Hahahaha Hulix.
That was funny at the start
11:15 dunno about your proclivities, but my rallying days taught me to place a big rubber mat under the engine bay, to stop the splashes. Just a part of preparation.
As you may know the Hilux is a lot like the Tacoma we have here in the US, but the Tacoma has crawl control and multi terrain select with locker in rear, that gives it really great off road ability. but when you said "robotic"sounds, yes the Tacoma sounds the same! i only wish we could get it with a diesel engine. I have the V6 gas but it has loads of power. ohh and i hate the drivers seat! its too narrow!
Are you going to do a video on what rust protection you use whether it’s Electronic or Lanno tech on the new lux before beach work?? 🤙🏼
Lanolin all the way!! 👍👍
