- Kim Zmeskal performs her floor exercise routine in the all around competition of the 1991 World Championships. She becomes the first American to win the all around at a World Championship.
Those whips are out of this world.
I remember the famous Zmeskal whipbacks back in the day!
Still my favorite floor exercise to this day!
The judges are clapping, music drowned out from the roar of the crowd and she’s got worldwide respect from the commentators and grandstands.... this was so brilliant & gave me goosebumps then and now. I always thought should’ve been a 10.
I have watched this year's ago i remember this little gal was so good and thier has only been one question that has always come to my mind. What the hell happened why why didn't she go to the Olympics? The best gymnast in the world and never went to the Olympics because she fell off the beam once. I don't buy it if someone out there knows i would love to know
@@teresamiles8260 she did go to the olympics in 1992 but didn't perform well because she was completely worn out by the time they arrived. she had a stress fracture in her ankle so she didn't perform to her usual standard, she finished 10th in the all around, 6th on floor and 8th on vault.
those arent judges, they are US gymnastics officials and the sponsors
I'll never forget watching this on TV as a kid. Forever my favorite gymnastics routine and gymnast of all time.
The first gymnast I was obsessed with.
Still gives me chills every time, even 30 years later.
Classic!! Makes me teary eyed still today!
What makes me teary eyed is she flopped in the Olympics.
Never been more proud to be American
I'll never forget those whipbacks. Wow!
I LOVE how the European/British commentators admit she would have won ANYWHERE in the world!
What's the name of the commentator?
She didn't win at the Olympics
I found it comical when she stated that the U.S. had been criticized for being biased in scoring domestically, when the Soviets had been creating biased scoring for decades worldwide.
the end of her routine gets me every time. "there. i have now finished showing you my greatness"
That was Kim's way of dropping the mic on stage and walking off, lol. What a powerhouse she was!
Gosh, this is when gymnastics used to be magical. I remember watching this as a kid! I really, really wish she had made the Olympic squad in 2000. Her routines in 1998 just needed a little bit of polishing and she would have been right up there. I think she had an injury if I remember correctly.
JoshLo3340 In know. Her floor and vault. Shannon’s beam and bars Betty’s triple turn aka the Okino.
Mara L The film is older so the colors have faded.
When floor routines used to be fun, exciting, entertaining! I miss the era of gymnastics
my favorite gymnast of all time!
I remember this. Screaming and crying as Kim pulled this off. I think Kim was where or dominance in the sport started. Later that year we won meadals in in Barcelona and I don't think that it's stopped yet.
With Simone Biles..not anytime soon. Riley & Morgan too! 🥰👌🏼🤸🏻♀️
@@krissy7342 well, this didn’t age well
The triple whip over to double pike is my favorite tumbling pass of all time.
I miss Kim. I thinks is because i really wished she did great at the Barcelona Olympics. Wished she had competed for a longer period. One od the best.
Still say she was the best at of all gymnast love her
What a time to be alive..........
Greatest floor exercise of all time. Simone included. I’m not a judge, so just my worthless opinion… but this finesse, excitement… for me, this is the epitome of greatness.
I'm total soviet team but it's true this would have won anywhere in the world
Kim Zmeskal will always be my fave all-time
How is this routine not a 10? I mean, let's be clear, there were some routines at the 92 Olympics that had more errors than this! Gotta love those judges:) Still a great job from Kim!
?? She mounts with a full in...
It's a great routine but lets not mar her win by overhyping. I would have scored it in the 9.925 area.
Agreed. 10.00 all the way
shushunovafan agreed, she should have totally won the AA but it didnt deserve the score it got.
She has a version with double layout at the open
@@shushunovafan4301 in the moment it should got a 10.
My absolute favorite gymnast
This is truly everything
I remember when I first saw her do that triple whip back flip I could do nothing but shake my head with a frown but for a good reason love that part of her floor exercise
Omg I love Kim so much and I was there to witness this it was amazing!!!!
It’s fascinating to hear the commentary from Eurosport and they immediately put to rest the later
debate of favoritism. I get the criticism of her lack of difficulty in a couple of places. Certainly she was capable of doing more on floor, as we saw her do the following year. But it’s not like her routines were any less difficult than Sveta’s. The only one who could argue slightly more difficulty would be Bontas and certainly no one was arguing she should have won. Kim did everything as cleanly as she is capable of doing and she earned that title. This is one of the first competitions I ever watched as a kid just starting gymnastics. What a moment. 😍
Boginskaya had atleast the same difficulty and since her execution and artistry are both far superior, that means she obviously should beat Kim with Kim at best having only the same difficulty. There is no way Zmeskal wins here if it isn't in the U.S like Boginskaya and others have said. And using Monica Phelps, the worst commentator in gymnastics history, as a source to prove any point, is kind of laughable, no offense.
@@tumicduguar2583 She proved them wrong at the 92 World Championships in Europe where she won 2 gold medals, most impressively on the balance beam where Boginskaya was the reigning world champion. Thus, that theory was debunked rather quickly.
@@stpark22 at the world championship 1992, many top gymnasts didn't participate. On olympics 1992, kim didn't even make it event finals on balance beam. Even if Kim didn't make a mistake on floor exercise, I think her all around place would be 5th or 6th at best.
@@terry3872 What are you talking about? Name the top gymnasts who wasn’t there other than Shannon Miller. Kim won the team optional round at the 92 Games so a mistake free all around would have guaranteed a podium spot for her.
@@stpark22 even if she didn't step out of the bounce, she still can't make it to the podium. Her final score is 39.412 which isn't close to bronze medal. On balance beam event, many of the best gymnast such as Yang Bo, Lu Li etc weren't there at the event. With her routine there is no way she can even be on event final.
I wish they still did they lay outs at the end of passes it added a little theatricality which I loved
Her floor routine along with Dawes was way above everyone back then!
I would take this FX before Biles’ any day. Those whips are just out of this world and the charm and personality are just so entertaining.
Flawless routine! The whips could use some work though. Lol. Just joking! They are spectacular and unforgettable! The piked full-in was really nice and high too! Kim even did a whip through to double layout at the Olympic Trials which was jaw-dropping! Kim is one of gymnastics all-time greats!
Let's bring back these routines where the tumbling and choreography just flow and have a theme.
Trailblazer! She paved the way for the American women World Champions to follow
She was super powerful!! As a 12 year old boy I was so proud watching her in the olympics with Shannon Miller and the rest of the team.
What an amazing girl.
I don't know, but for me this is the real FX. A good combination of aerobics and artistic gymnastics.
She was amazing!
@Gantinx "In the Mood" is the name of the song.
I AGREE THE WHIPS WERE INSANE
I was 12 and an low level gymnast at the time. This routine was what we dreamed of. Thank you Kim!
The greatest floor exercise routine of all time.
The whipbacks always look amazing.
Perfect
2:38 look at Marta digging her nails into her neck - she must be so mad and mean
Favorite floor of all time! ❤
Simply the best! ❤️ Zmeskal!
Respect
D D mad respect
Never seen the American crowd so ecstatic.
Queen of the whip backs! My favorite female gymnast, absolutely!
Excellent!
This is as good as it gets..
It couldn't be a better ending for her competition- floor routine in front of a home crowd. It just wouldn't have been the same build of of anticipation waiting for the score had her last event been vars, vault or beam. ☺️
Go Kimmy!
She punished the floor with those whips. Savage!
her whips thoooo! wow
My favorite routine eva! Why did they get rid of whip backs?
unknown I love em too they probably eliminated them because of risk of injury
@@valerieteti1755 They haven't gotten rid of them, they're just not as common. Off the top of my head, Aliya Mustafina used them in her opening pass in 2010, and others even this quad have used them too.
Whips are still used
MD-722 I was referring to the fact you don’t see it in the latest Olympics or World Championships anymore. Maybe at colleges they still do but not at elite levels. Aliya Mustafina performing it was still 10 years ago.
@Gantinx actually it's a mix of `in the mood' and `sing, sing, sing with a swing!" :)
The greatest FX I have ever seen. Must have been the Soviet and the Cuban judges who gave her the 9.95's lol.
great exercise!
❤❤❤❤love❤❤❤❤
This routine is the gold standard of "American Aplomb."
Think about it she had the old type of gym floor no spring with it. Just think what she could have done with the type of floor they have now!
Amazing lady!!!!
@KimZfan the latter is from 1:05-1:24 - the rest is `in the mood'. :)
Proud to call her a Texas girl.
THIS ISN'T A PERFECT 10 BUT AMERICAN CUP WAS??? WTF this one was so much better
Brava!
marta loves kim! So sweet!
***** Marta loves Kim when Kim wins...
As if Martha gets to wear the gold medal and not Kim. How disrespectful of you to talk about history's greatest coach pair ever. Shame on you. Show some respect.
Martha was abusive AF
BuckHollywood no. She doesn't.
Tushar Joshi greatest ever? Maybe their results were, how they did it is far from that
She was a damn ringer!
Count your rainbows not your thunderstorms! Your a 10!
I'm not overly familiar with that COP, but what in the heck did they deduct?
+April Adare who knows. It was dang good tho!
April Adare maybe the leg separation on some of her passes (it was still damn impressive though, obviously)
In 2017 killer kim is still the the best and the sexiest EVER.
It's almost sad to watch this Knowing what happened to her for the 2000 Olympics, ohhhhh only if we could see into the future.......😢
What college did Kim go to?
I wish she could've won the Olympic gold in 92. Idk what happened....
Stress fracture and being completely burned out
3:48
Es buena pero .....las mejores eran las rusas y rumanas no hay con que darle.
She never looked happy
Be called Bella Karoli “twitchy”. Lmao! 😆
E
She was no nadia
Kim's body language screams that she doesn't like Marta one bit.
バルセロナは怪我で残念
B*tch I’m- b*tch I’m KIM
One year later , at Olympics 😢... No medals for her. Miller , Gutsu ,.Milo were superiors in all situation , better performance . In muy opinion in 1991 Kim received overscores...
