Adelaide is the capital city of the state of South Australia, Australia. Founded in 1836 by British free settlers. Adelaide has a population of 1.3 million as of 2021.
Adelaide is South Australia’s cosmopolitan coastal capital. Its ring of parkland on the River Torrens is home to renowned museums such as the Art Gallery of South Australia, displaying expansive collections including noted Indigenous art, and the South Australian Museum, devoted to natural history. The city's Adelaide Festival is an annual international arts gathering with spin-offs including fringe and film events.
Adelaide city centre is the inner city locality of Greater Adelaide. It is known by locals simply as "the City" or "Town" to distinguish it from Greater Adelaide and from the City of Adelaide local government area (which also includes North Adelaide and from the Park Lands around the whole city centre). The population was 25.026 in the 2021 census.
Adelaide city centre was planned in 1837 on a greenfield site following a grid layout, with streets running at right angles to each other. It covers an area of 4.33 square kilometres (1.67 square miles) and is surrounded by 6.68 square kilometres (2.58 square miles) of park lands. Within the city are five parks: Victoria Square in the exact centre and four other, smaller parks.
Before the British colonisation of South Australia, the Adelaide Plains, on which Adelaide was built, were home to the Kaurna group of Aboriginal Australians. The colony of South Australia was established in 1836 at Glenelg, and the city itself established in 1837. The location and characteristic grid layout of the city and North Adelaide, as well as the surrounding parklands, were the result of the work of Colonel William Light (1786-1839), who was the first Surveyor General of South Australia. The area where the Adelaide city centre now exists was once known as "Tarndanya", the Kaurna word for "male red kangaroo rock", which was the name used for an area along the south bank of what is now known as the River Torrens (Karrawiri Pari), which flows through Adelaide.

In early 1964, when "Beatlemania" had swept much of the world, the promoters Aztec Services found themselves unexpectedly with a "hot property" on their hands, having long before booked "The Beatles" in a package with several other up-and-coming English bands. Determined to make the most from their windfall, their itinerary was restricted to the East Coast. A local Adelaide radio presenter, Bob Francis, responded to the demands of Adelaide teenagers and, together with Jim Slade of 5DN and Warwick Prime and Roger Dowsett of 5KA, began campaigning for an Adelaide concert. As a result of their efforts, a petition with 80,000 signatures was presented to the promoter, Ken Brodziak, who organised a two-day stopover in Adelaide for the band, with added concerts arranged for the Centennial Hall, Wayville showgrounds. Francis flew to Sydney on 11 June 1964 and flew back to Adelaide with The Beatles the following day. The Bay Road (now Anzac Highway), was crowded with onlookers as the cavalcade passed, and masses of fans were congregated on King William Street when Francis and the "Fab Four" appeared on the balcony of the Town Hall.

The population of greater Adelaide at that time was 668,000! - www.macrotrend...
John Lennon described the Adelaide crowd as bigger than New York.
