Cars are safer than ever, with CAD assisted designs leading the way for crash survivability. But it wasn’t always like that. Cars used to be rolling death traps with no regard for safety. Join Nolan Sykes and explore the evolution of auto safety.
WheelHouse answers all the questions about the automotive world you never thought to ask. Nolan Sykes looks at the history, sociology and psychology behind the cars you love, and the features you might overlook.

Hahahaha when I asked for this some people went crazy and told me do your research xD!!
The best safety feture in cars is the driver being alert
Can't always save you. Sometimes your shit out of luck or someone else isnt alert
Yeah but that's a perfect world that doesnt exist
Really? Tell me that human error is safe even tho the driver is alert
I''d prefer a car that could protect me if some oncoming drunk driver comes veering into my lane

Donut Media honestly, that’s been stuck in my head for way too long. It’s kinda frustrating how stupid, yet catchy it is lol
6:50 dolan gets real scary for a moment
RIP T-Top cars
RIP popup headlights
phonzerelli RIP Firebird
The whole reason for T-tops was actually because of safety regulations. Convertibles were expected to be unable to pass new safety requirements for rollover protection, so the T-top was created to allow for a somewhat open-air experience while still keeping a protective structure over the cabin. Went away because later convertibles had strong enough windshield frames to provide necessary protection, and some have even gone with retractable roll bars that deploy if the computer detects the car is rolling over.
rip all fun :(
i always thought it was the other way round, i thought t tops still counted as a regular car not a convertable and therefore had to meet regular car standards with half a roof
This video is awesome. I teach Drivers ed and try to explain a lot of this stuff to my students. I love how you incorporated so much of the history into this video. If you don't mind, I am going to incorporate this into my presentation to the students. 😁
honestly so happy to see you guys blowing up. y'all deserve it, no matter what the topic is I am always entertained. keep it up!

7:11 same buddy same.
CAD is for design. The analysis bit is via CAE: Computer Aided Engineering. The CAD only holds data of lines and surfaces, but CAE models the car into a big mathematical equation solved by the computer... Hence the analysis bit.
Wait wait! Red pen here! lol "Active safety equipment" by definition is everything that PREVENTS YOU from crashing. "Passive safety equipment" is everything that, when a crash happens, mitigates damage and injury. So seatbelts and airbags are both passive safety systems. ESP, ASR, ABS etc are active safety features
Do a video on why car makers aren't really making sporty cars and only focus on economy cars
Francisco Juan well also more of the younger audiences want to buy them too whilst being apart of that small group therefore making them even more money off of insurance as well..
Because real car guys drive slow cars fast. Tiny dicked guys buy fast cars.
Francisco Juan nono, I'm not talking about sports cars, I'm talking about sporty cars, kinda like the Corolla XRS or the Celica. cars that weren't true sports cars, but cars that you could have fun in. An upgraded Corolla would be fun, or as I was thinking, an upgraded, sporty Yaris (I'm a rally kinda guy, I just want an AWD Yaris). I know about supply and demand, but I believe that if car manufacturers made more sporty cars, they would sell pretty well
Supply and demand, Logically if less people are buying them then makers can't make money from them. Everyone is getting small economical vehicles now. :(
Bits of Pulp poor and jealous liberal scum of the earth spotted!!!
You got it backwards, airbags are an active system because the respond (activate) during an impact. Seatbelts are passive (except the pretensioner) because they do not respond during the impact.
Whats the song playing?
Loving its synthwave
everyone wants to know yet even Shazam can't find this song

I blame Volvo for everything related to safety
Mike Arredondo - And Saab
I blame Ralph Nader, neither Volvo nor Saab forced anyone to make car safer, they did it because they thought is was important. But Ralph on the other hand, didn't understand cars in the first place and only published the book to create commotion...
Yes, damn those guys for pioneering the 3 point seat belt, and lets not forget that those monsters released the technology for FREE to the rest of the industry even though they could have patented the tech for monetary gain.
Damn them all to hell!
/s
I just blame Volvo. Have a flu? Definitely Volvo...
Ryan Tyniec you know they did a lot more to the modern car then most some are side air bags o2 censors whiplash protection pedestrian detection auto braking blind spot monitoring all shit that makes bad drivers even less attentive to the road and adding weight and complication to something most car enthusiast could care less about. I’m glad my car has safety but it’s just out of control now
I wish you would have mentioned more about the Volvo 240 to this day nobody has ever died in a head-on collision in a Volvo 240. That was the car that helped introduce crumple zones for the first time widespread in America bought that design in started making it the regulation.
@0:04 when u go get a Thai massage and Lin things ur a god dame trampoline
Hey Donut! Really interesting video! Love how you guys cover multiple aspects of car history, industry, science, trends, reviews, practical vs dream cars! Keep it awesome work! How about an a little instruction video on how to set-up the best seat position for safety and performance in your car? I see so many people driving sitting too low, too far back, reclined, feet on the dash (passengers), and sitting too close to steering wheel. Even hand position can reduce injuries in a crash. I think it could be a cool video, wish I could do it on my own but you guys can get the message out way better! Always wear you seatbelts, fo sho!
You forgot the Italian air bag creator.
Marios Tabajen
Mario Aerobaggio.

@@truantray _Made so that you don’t go..._ *YAHOOOO!* _Through the windscreen..._
You got active and passive safety wrong.
Passive safety help minimize damage during an accident therefore airbags and seat belts are both active safety features.
Active safety helps preventing an accident, i.e. traction control.
Great historical info about auto-safety. Thanks for putting this together!
6:50 you took a really dark turn there bud holy shit....
6:22 Knight Rider 🙂
This is awesome. I actually watched this video as part of a Law Enforcement training for Vehicle Safety. Awesome to see your guys video as a training aid. Very fun to watch vs the old boring monotone voiced videos haha.
Why is there no mention of the Tucker 48 that featured the first seat belts, pop out windshields or directional headlights?
why do cars look the way they are right now?
sergai thanabalagan because depression and safety
Well, A part of what your asking is mentioned in the: "how cars went from boxy to curvy" video. It is a combination of depression, safety and styling. For example: If car manufacturers have to build cars like they did 40 years ago, they would go bankrupt. Robots, technologie, laws, styling and producing less greenhouse gas are the keywords in the car industry.
Back then, saftey wasnt number 1 so company's focuses more on looks rather than saftey. When the seventies hit, brands couldnt really find a way to make cars look good and also be safe, so they just decided to makes cars only safe and didnt care much about looks
Look at any car erw you'll find all the cars look simialar so just evolution of styling and function vs form.
Vox beat Donut Media to the answer ruclips.net/video/IVjmIovOPek/видео.html
Sure, i like cars. However, the real reason I watch Donut's videos one after the other is your, James' and the rest of the guys jokes and personalities. The writing is also top notch, and the guys at editing are awesome.
In essence, all you guys rock. Keep up the good work!
My father worked in the automotive industry in the 80s and 90s. He tells me of how they wore hard hats when working on the airbags, just in case they went off, as they did not know if this was a possibility. Being a firefighter, he had watched two guys get launched out the sides of a car while trying to crush the center console, where the module is.
They need to show this in schools.
personally think this is the best episode of wheelhouse ever
One can only wish that consumer cars have F1 and LMP1 levels of safety, while having multiple extremely effective breaks of Lorry Trucks.
great vid! *should do a history of volvo's safety video* ! I've heard they will share their technology for free just to improve overall safety for *us*
Nader pretty much lied about the Corvair's terrible safety - and his statements were later proven false by the National Highway Traffic Safety Association who released a 134 page report that exonerated the Corvair of Nader's charges. The NHTSA would go on to say that "The 1960-63 Corvair compares favorably with contemporary vehicles used in the tests," and would later hire three outside testers that would come to the same conclusion.
Donut you saved me because I am writing a composition on that :)
Do an episode what was the first muscle car
I may be wrong, but I believe it was the Pontiac GTO
That pic tho @ 5:26 let's be real. These 2 have the cover picture on planet earth. Siiiick!

Ford removed almost anything in their Lineup, except SUV's... And the Mustang.
They are going to in 2020
That'd be stupid if Ford kills all their cars, because not everyone wants a Crossover SUV or a truck.
Focus' Crossover
SSmaro, buddy, it's real.
+R0B3RT true
@2:36 talk about pops Rivera in the weeds💪🏼😎
Could you do an episode on why gasoline engines became preferred over the alternatives, and what new technology the future might have in store?
3:21 check out thhat flexxxxx
I know from IIHS results my SUV is a deathtrap, though I can say if I hit a car I'm coming off better, a steel bumper and a steel chassis haha
Justin Noker you may get impaled on the steering column, but at least it will total their car and yours will just need new paint lol
Justin Noker Steel isn't always better though. I suppose at lower speeds your car and you could walk away with you taking more impact than a car without a steel bumper. But at speed i'd much rather the car take it for me.
Justin Noker suvs are heavier: crashing with a static object that will be worse but crashing with a smaller car the suv will smash the small car
MultiAREE exactly but what happens with trucks?
I wouldn't even be alive if seatbelts wouldn't exist. Awesome video!
Seat belts saved me one night in a 1970 Buick Electra. Thankfully I was in the habit of wearing both the lap and separate shoulder belts as a teenage driver in the mid 70s. I was one of the few people who buckled up back then.
he ran me over call the police for me. ....ok hahahahaha

unsafe at any speed... hands down BEST song by agent orange
Don't forget the old crown victoria with a glass top. Actual glass.
Anyone notice asap rockys “testing” snippet ?
You made one little mistake in the video. Active restraints are called that because you have to put them on yourself. The participant is active in it. Passive restraints require no action by the user. That's why the early 90s cars that could not put airbags in had those automatic seat belts. They fit the criteria as passive devices.
Great video guy on hood ending laugh out loud.
You guys should do who invented the first manual vehicle ? and what was the first manual vehicle ? ...
2:28 wow, that's a wrekage.
You and I clearly don't see self-driving cars the same if you think it would make the driving experience relaxing.

Passive is something that is always in place and active works only when needed. You have it backwards

very informative as always
Do an up to speed on the corvair!!!!
Up to speed: Audi Quattro?? Make sure to include the gecko😂
Cars are still deathboxes in a lot of smaller countries
M3 Lee 2:17
You gotta tell us about the Corvair!!
Wouldn't the seatbelt be passive and the airbag be active? Seeing as the seatbelt never changes position or function (no changes=passive) and the airbag needs to activate during a crash?
Great video
Do a wheelhouse on the development of self-driving cars
Oh nice video. Why don't you guys put links for all the the video clips you use to create you videos? Why don't you show the reference for other people's work.
Volvo
Enough said
U guys are just awesome....luv ur videos😘
NOT THE PONTIAC VENTURA!!!!!! I LOVE MY 73 SPRINT!!!!
The thing I'm worried about:
That more and more people consider cars to simply be "transport" and that, eventually, nostalgia will be lost among the majority of the population. The laws of supply and demand in effect then, automakers will make self driving, lackluster, electric "boxes" that'll get everyone from "Point A to Point B" fast, but owner-operated vehicles will be illegal, or need a "special permit", or only be allowed on certain roads, thus killing the aftermarket automotive industry and everything that "custom' stands for in the automotive world...or am I just being crazy or paranoid? Does anyone else feel this way??
Why no mention of Preston Tucker and his Tucker Torpedo car?
Of the Donut crew, Nolan definitely seems the safest
