Vicki and Carol are brilliant.. They deserve awards and more.
These "Family" skits demonstrated Carol Burnett's skill as a dramatic actress. She was and is one of the greatest comedians that has ever lived!
This therapist guy is playing the hell out of this part!! He’s an awesome actor!
Craig Richard Nelson, great actor.
It’s why these sketches were so popular. People identify with these characters. A lot people see glimpses their own family members and it hits home. Even Carol said that in one of her DVDs. Mama is still popular today.
Eunice and Mama are the best example of two actresses who are perfect together. They are just hilarious.
Her final show to me was the darkest day in television history. Very emotional and heartwrenching.
How can i look up the final show
I agree. I wish she had walked out that door with Phillip.
All except when Jimmy Stewart surprised her. I cried, but it was such a good cry. She loved him so much. Just like I guess we all do.
@@gabriallefleming7611 Good point. Thank you
Amen
Loved both of them.
The Eunice family episodes where to much like my family.
Today I know it has a name.
Narcissistic Mother and her adult daughter. One of the truly sadist relationships there is.
Imagine how Eunice would feel knowing she was the Star of her own show the entire time.
Remember this is comedy with really great actors.......
This is tv comedy at its absolute best. Not only hysterically funny, but poignant and truly achieves transcendence in its illustration of the tragedy of human relationships.
Jaymes Guy Absolutely. Just precious.
Too bad they don't make TV shows like this anymore.
BELIEVABLE is the BEST WORD to describe them!!!
these characters are just a tweak away from being a heavy drama. Best part of this show.
Yaaaay!!! I've been waiting for 30 years to see this again! I did this skit in high school and it was great. I still had most of it memorized......Thanks!
It's a sketch. Carol prefers the term and skits are more vaudeville.
Vicki Lawrence has the most hilarious pissed off expression on her face I’ve ever seen.
She is amazing actress since on TV kem berry was older the. She who passed away this year
No, she didn't
Half the time Vicki Lawrence is biting her lips trying not to laugh... that's what those expressions are lol!
She was 19 when she started with the show. Played Mama in her early 20s when Harvey Korman and Carol Burnett were in their mid-40s. Married 46 years to the same guy, still performing to mid-sized venues.
I like doctor tightening come over and take me up
We used to sit down with mom and dad to watch this show(amongst others) every week.
I seriously don’t remember this episode. Wish this video played the whole skit.
On a further note as a participant/recipient of our loony bin system...I can attest that this IS HOW MOST SESSIONS PLAY OUT. Personally, I had a great time in the 42 hrs I was held for 51/50.
But I think I’m a little better for it. I can see clearly the ineptitude of our mental care service PROVIDERS.
They should themselves undergo the rigorous questioning and scrutiny only to be asked in the end,
“And how does that make you feel?”.
"I belong in show business" You got that right, Carol!
Even thought this is comedy, this segment always brings bitter sweet tears to my eyes. Art reflecting life.
Carol Burnett was once asked if The Family was a reflection of her own family. She said,
"The Family is every family."
Read her book. It is good. Had a tough life.
bad blood movie
Alice the series
When she recites the 'foe' poem again at the end regarding her own Mother it kills me. And it does in part that Vicki nails how awful Mama treats Eunice. She could easily worry about how her character is received but she doesn't. Just goes full throttle. They're both brilliant.
The Carol Burnet and Vicky Lawrence, Played Eunice/ Moma was a Great idea! Thank you. The Man who played the psychiatrist ( Mr Tate) Give him some credit too. He played his roll - his part" very well and funny too!! I sure can relate to the dysfunctional Family,, Carol Burnett played this So Real in The Real World.. Thank you Vicky Lawrence/ Moma-- so funny! Thank you Carol Burnett for all your so very Funny and Great Show's!!! It would be nice if you Carol could be on more Talk Show's... Love you, God Bless You.💗💐🌷
Thank you so much for posting this. I saw it originally MANY years ago, and have not been able to find it since then. Whenever I mention this episode to anyone, no one knows what I am talking about. Thank you for finding and posting this. This is truly a great gift.
THANK YOU
One of the funniest things I've seen. That psychiatrist is a riot and of course, Eunice and Mama as always.
"'Could've' & 'Should've' are words we don't use;
They only depress us and give us the blues."
That's a motto I would have a hard time living by. Boy, I'm gonna need to practice.
Edit: And it turns out "phooey on youey" was being said before I started saying it. Imagine that!
I would be crazy for sure if I had a family like that lol
But it’s funny to watch Carol Burnett and Vicky Lawrence, they are very good together
The laughter during this skits was awkward. " everybody treats me like dirt !" ( hahahaha )
Oh yes, a Tragicomedy. a rare and difficult genre to pull off, especially for a prime time variety show. as a result people either loved it or hated it. the tragic elements hit some people so close that they then couldn't appreciate the humor. Easy to laugh when you've been there, realized the ridiculous nature of it and moved on, like Carol. Hard when you're still in it, have never recovered from or are still bitter about it all. Mama reminds too many people of their cold, distant, mean mother and so they see Eunice as justified. Those are the folks that hate it. Since the skits always hold Eunice as the central character, and though Carol welcomes all interpretations, I think her true intention was to show how Eunice could never overcome her family difficulties and could never find that inner strength to believe in herself no matter what and then go out in the world strong and confident - like Carol did. It's kind of like Carol is saying to us, "see what happens and how ridiculous you look when you are constantly looking to other people to determine how you feel about yourself?" This deeper truth falls on deaf ears to many.
Carol once said that the Family is about every family. In her case, the relationship between Mama and Eunice was very reflective of her own mother and grandmother, who fought constantly.
Not all of us who see Mama as their cold distant mean Mothers, hate the sketches.
Some of us can appreciate the humor, and still find it very very sad.
That's a very insightful interpretation, btw. 😁👍
It's satire and parody comedy genius. Based on true life exaggeration.
Omg thanks for posting this-never seen it before!!!!
Thank you for posting this. I saw it originally MANY years ago and have not been able to find this. People thought that I was crazy, and that it did not exist. THANK YOU FOR MAKING MY EVENING. THIS IS TRULY A GIFT.
I just read Carol Burnett's latest book. She said they played this for comedy, but these people were ultimately very sad folks.

Eunice did have a career at one point weighing peanut's at Woolworth's. Mother Harper said that in the episode when Ed left her.
Thank you so much for posting this...this is the only one I have never seen and couldn't find anywhere...thanks!
NOSYPOWER ditto
That skit would have justified "The Carol Burnett Show" alone. This one epitomized it at its most brilliant (even without Harvey Korman as Ed); hilarious and devastating at the same time.
This is canonically the final The Family episode, after which the show transforms into Mama's Family which shifts the point of view from Eunice to Thelma/Mama.
I love where he says it gives us the blues.
Love me Ed, Eunie& Momma!!
LMAO❣
I wasn't born till 1984, so I've only ever seen the Carol Burnett show on RUclips. But I DO just BARELY remember seeing Mama's family on TV. So am I correctly assuming that the closing of the Carol Burnett show gave place for Mama's Family to start?
It was also spoofing the 'feel good' psychoanalysis of the seventies and the 'get in touch with your feelings' movement.
Jaymes Guy Well, kids who grew up in the straight jacket life of the 50s, then went through the renaissance of the 60s, really needed support groups in the 70s!🙄
Jaymes Guy This is the real life experiences of women!
Moo
Interesting, The actor who played the psychiatrist, would later play a character who had an obsession with fire being counselled by Betty white (rose nylund) on golden girls.....
He was funny as he freaked out Dorothy when he lit a match.
Have you ever looked at fire. I mean really look at it
@@jasonallsop4460 The beginning of that scene with Bea, when the guy starts staring at her in the next chair, and she slowly turns toward him ... gets me laughing every time I watch.
He was very good as a teacher on SQUARE PEGS, and the really nasty law student in THE PAPER CHASE.
But wtf is his name?! He's so familiar, but whyyyy?
I always felt bad for Eunice, sometimes she tries to be a helpful person and it blows up in her face.
You should see the movie, it will make you see her in a new light. Really sad at the very end.
The movie was so sad at the end, I cried with her.
Eunice and Ellen are just like Mama.
I love Eunice.
you probably know by now, but it's called "Eunice" and it's on RUclips. It's very good. It aired in 1981 or '82.
It's also very sad.
SOOO hard to believe it's been 40 years since this show ended. 40!!!
Even if I WAS only in 2nd grade at the time, I feel so old now. . . egad.
mama reminds me of my mother
david daniel That is sad. Mothers are usually kinder to boys than girls. But, if it helps at all, Mama represents most mothers in reality.
crazy as hell
$.05 parking meters, wow
Not sure why Craig Richard Nelson, who played the psychiatrist in episode 11.24 of Carol Burnett, was never given credit for that performance on the IMDB, but I recently submitted the request to the IMDB, and noticed that he now gets credit for that episode. Parts of this scene also appear on "The Carol Burnett Show: A Reunion" from 1993, which I thought was an excellent compilation of sketches from her show.
Thanks! I was searching for his name and you are completely correct about wondering why he never got due credit!
"What in'na hail is he tawkin abaout?
i hate to say it but from what i've seen maybe if thelma would've given eunice just the tiniest bit of love and attention, she wouldnt be who she is today. it just seems awfully cruel of thelma to be treating eunice this way. a good mother would give their kid love and attention even if the kid is a brat. thelma always seemed to look down on eunice and never seemed to regret it. even if she did she gets over it quickly
That's Craig Richard Nelson-Carol Burnett worked with him in the movie A Wedding.
When confronted with a foe
bless him praise him let him go.
Recording for posterity.
Vicki Bee That is cool! I wouldnt have put it that nicely but glad you did. Takes the edge off to think like that.
When confronted with an enemy strike him down.
I think the NBC version of "Mama's Family" was pretty close to the sketches. The syndicated version is a different story.
The skits version is hard to follow . They never had all of thelma kids on the show at one time. The show momma family all her kids disappear except Vic. Eunice son. Bubba what happen to vic 2 children.
This is so good I lo=ed it✔️
Eunice went nuts having to deal with her husband leaving and of course mama smdh lmfao
By in large, children are the result of their upbringing. While not for all of it -- children do make some decisions completely on their own -- parents are responsible for a large part of what a child becomes. Parents praise and take responsibility for when they raise doctors, lawyers -- socially-successful adults -- but when confronted with the antithesis or the not-so-brag-worthy adult child, parents hide their hands, balking into their turtle shells from responsibility, ever chanting the mantra, " I did my best", thus deflecting responsibility entirely onto the adult child. I won't be so glib as to black-and-white life, but there are far too many versions "Mama" whose inevitable result will always be "Eunice".
The Family actors do a great jobof perfecting the Missouri accent. Not quite southern... Not quite mid western...
I turned into Eunice lol.
Yes it was the Eunice Special. It's on You Tube. Look Under Tabsarkin.... thats the username... and its the Eunice TV special.... it's in 9 parts i think. You can do a search for Carol Burnett and find that user in case I didn't spell his name right.
What in the HELL is he talkin' about? 😂
Oh, the last show ...quite a finish!!
i am so sick of everybodys negativity, it was a comic SKETCH the CHARACTERS were written this way, they are NOT real people!
Actually, Mama and Eunice are reflective of the relationship between Carol Burnett's mother and grandmother.
I used to identify w eunice. after many years of therapy and a masters degree later, my mom can still creep me out, funny..
Am I remembering wrong or was there a TV movie made between the end of the Carol Burnette show and the start of Mamas Family? I think it had three parts and in the last one Mama dies.
Yes it was called Eunice
i love eunice :P
OMG, I would LOVE to see that!
the golden light in the toes, going up your leg.. hahaha
She mistreated her husband too. At least Ed worked and took care of her. She could work at the hardware store like Ed mentioned. She wants to blame everyone. She could have made her life. She could have worked on her marriage and she could have been a better mother to her children. She could have taken acting lessons. She did not have to be around her mama all the time. I am surprised How Ed put up with them for Soo long. I hope Ed found what he was looking for
And that is Carol's point. She blames everyone else. I believe Ed loved her but she settled for and used Ed to escape her parents. He gave up getting the love reciprocated and left.
It's part of the Tennessee Williams shtick. They try and try but everything always ends in ruin. But in these folks' hands it's really funny!
@Robert4770 Yes, there was and you can find it on "Tabstarkin" user page here on RUclips. It was an excellent tele-play.
@mpmg67 -- The year on the clips is 1978.
I didnt know her hubby left her til now hahaha... go figure
What point is this in the show, where Ed has left?
I don't remember seeing that on the Variety Show.
Or is this somehow related to the special, titled "Eunice"?
Okay, I just read the description, I guess I should have paid more attention to that.
I still don't remember Ed leaving though.
Although it makes perfect sense and everyone was wondering why they even stayed together.
They had to write Ed out of the last of the Family Sketches because Harvey Korman had left the Burnette Show and was replaced by Dick Van Dyke
Well, I'll give you that I guess. But "Cellmates" and "Positive Thinking" could pass for Burnett sketches IMO! :)
My Grandmother and her eldest daughter were very much like this; they did not like each, too much alike and I think my grandmother was jealous of her daughter. They did not like have a good relationship.
I love Mama
Didn't Eunice EVER love Ed or the boys ?
ManTexDal Yes, she loves them both and have defended them against Thelma and Ellen's verbal abuse and insults. She just gets tired of being mistreated and taken advantage of.
She always wanted to marry someone named "Duke".
Ed was her second choice.
There were skits where Eunice stated she could have had Duke if her sister Ellen (played by Betty White)
hadn't taken Duke away from her.
She then points to Ed and complains that she got stuck with THAT loser.
Or words to that effect.
So in a way, Eunice is a lot like Mama.
Good Lord, it's a TV show people
Yeah
Wow! This has gotta hit a nerve with a lot of women. Like looking in the mirror.
Sadly, my mother loved this show and thought it was a way to live life. But it's a tv sitcom and meant for entertainment type purposes only. She believed she was eunice but treated everybody like momma treated people. An old women that chose to waist her life away then blamed it on her poor family. I'll bet eunice would have a far better life if she'd been encouraged more. But I find these old shows more sad than funny. read "Toxic Parents" by Dr. Susan Forward & "The Birth Order book" by Leman
Why did Ed leave Eunice????
pinkskyies Harvey Korman had left the show in the final season to do a show for ABC. They decided to write Ed out by having him call Eunice and telling her he'd found someone else. I'd really like to see that sketch again. I saw it only once the night they broadcast it. Carol did a long monologue of the entire phone conversation. It was really something.
pinkskyies who knows
When they brought the characters back in Mama's Family, Ed and Eunice were still together. Or maybe he'd decided to return to her.
All you have to do is watch any Family episode with Ed in it to see why he would leave!
I am very curious about it too
I wonder if the therapist is carols husband
No. That's an actor. Only time I've seen Joe Hamilton appear is he sat in the audience and she pretended to punch him.
Wait, Ed left Eunice?
Ed took off and married a cocktail waitress when Harvey left at the end of Season 10.
@thejtamez -- yeah, her and two hundred million other people. :) (:
Reminds me of Kath and Kim Australian version Australian humor is better than American because of convict history lol
This therapist is worst than my own. Although all therapist are annoying.
A weird thing about the word Therapist is that it spells The Rapist.
Old Drunk Rantings
What ed left Eunice
@mmp3pets I wish my own mother had understood that better. If she had I probably wouldn't be saying my favorite episodes are the one where Eunice buys the self-help positive thinking tapes and even manages to build herself up to the point where she actually try's out for (and gets)a part at the local Raytown comm. theater. Only to have her family screw it up And the episode where Mama falls a sleep and talks to the ghost of her own mother and tells her off.
I'm getting angry. Lol
Lmao!!!😂😂😂
mama is my narc mother

We have the love love mike mike love ❤️ night we miss love you you love miss love you 😍 night we have the weekend you have fun love to is
That therapy crap is for the birds!
Sometimes you just need someone to talk to. In the sketch, though, this guy is probably the only reasonable voice either of them have heard in a long time.
bahaha bahaha bahaha bahaha bahaha bahaha bahaha bahaha bahaha bahaha bahaha bahaha bahaha bahaha bahaha bahaha bahaha bahaha bahaha bahaha bahaha bahaha bahaha bahaha
Eunice dies crazy face best!
usada de felpudo. The mother is unstandable
This is NOT the way a psychiatrist would respond to Eunice, with silly slogans and poems. No wonder this guy takes patients from the County. This guy is a loon.
These two women are NOT funny at all
This is a ridiculous skit. No plot whatsoever.
