Carol Burnett is a fantastic actress. This made me tear up at the end. Just like in the TV movie, "Eunice". She has the ability to make you laugh, and cry, and everything in between in just a few minutes. I don't believe American TV was ever as good as it was when Carol, Vicki, Harvey, and Tim got in front of that camera. Makes me sad that all my generation gets is Snooki and brides-to-be competing for plastic surgery. Thanks for the video post!

I lived my life as Eunice. Spent half of it in therapy! Never fell for allowing my mama in on a therapy session but she looked at therapy just like Eunice's mama did! I remember one day I had stopped by her house on my way to a session! She asked what we talked about! I said I wouldn't know till I got to the appointment! She said "Well, just be sure you tell them it wasn't my fault"!
I've spent the last 45 years trying to figure out whose fault it was! lol

God bless you. Came from the same type of family. I relate to the brother who went off to success. Others suffered.
It wasnt until i found that my mother suffered the same. No real parenting skills and an only child on her own since age 2. Then i understood. Instead of amger, hate or blame, sometines its best to delve into their childhood. A parent is only as good or misguided as their parents. Its learned. Never hate your mother. Always pray for them. You did mothing wrong. God bless.

Eunice could be the scapegoat child of a narcissistic mother (Mama) and Ellen appears to be the golden child. The other children survived not only because they left the nest but they virtually had no contact with Mama. in any event, as most people have stated, these sketches are absolutely brilliant from both a wrting and acting perspective.

I also always thought Ellen was the 'golden child', but in one of the sketches posted here, Mama & Ellen got sucked into a knock-down, drag-out fight that Eunice had started. Ellen told off her mother. Eunice started her usual sniping before they'd even gone inside. Mama overheard Eunice & Ellen and Ellen didn't hold back at saying how much she too hated Mama. Mama had gone upstairs to see her grandchildren and was standing on the landing on the way back down and saw most of that argument. Ellen them threw them both out of her house. She told them never to call or visit ever again.

Everybody left Thelma, husband, Phil, Ellen, only one left is Eunice. She killed Eunice's dreams to hold her back cause she know the other children don't want to be bothered with her. Thelma is just like her momma and whats bad/sad Eunice is just like her. Eunice wants to be free but she is scared and lack self esteem and she blames other people for not just going for what she wants in turn that vicious cycle of back and forth with her mother.

For anyone who wants to witness the apotheosis of dramatic acting, look no further than 4:01 - 4:51 as Eunice marshals her fortitude to triumph (at least for the moment) over her own deeply entrenched self-doubt and self-loathing. There is so much to laugh about, and of course there's a deep tragic flavor about Eunice and the dysfunction ... but as comedy writing and acting goes, this concept and its execution were stellar and highly memorable. Eunice made a classic mistake of being angry with her family that didn't believe in her, and focused all her energy with demanding approval and encouragement from them, instead of taking her resolve and using it to live her dreams.
Eunice settled for being someone who never was, because she never tried while blaming her lack of support from her family. She didn't have to face her fear of failure there are more ways of self-defeating than others defeating you.

Fender 52 Darlin', why care about such an awful person no matter who it is? A zillion ppl out there in the world , lots of them will think highly of you. Blow it off. Laugh it off. Fathers do this to their sons for the same reasons mothers do it to their daughters. Jealousy. They look at the child and realize that child may become anything, do anything, and they know their fate is probably sealed. Often they think they had no choice but even non-choice is a choice, and they refuse to admit, even to themselves that they did choose, even if out of laziness or cowardice.

A lot of parents who were treated the same way by their parents. Parents who are clinical psychopaths and enjoy inflicting pain and sorrow. Parents who are too stupid to have children but find it a moral imperative to not use contraceptives because Rome says so.

Not sure why Craig Richard Nelson, who played the psychiatrist in episode 11.24 of Carol Burnett, was never given credit for that performance on the IMDB, but I recently submitted the request to the IMDB, and noticed that he now gets credit for that episode. Parts of this scene also appear on "The Carol Burnett Show: A Reunion" from 1993, which I thought was an excellent compilation of sketches from her show.

I think it’s fascinating to read all the comments and learn how many people had families similar to the Higgins/ Harper tribe. I cannot imagine it. I guess if someone truly came from all that dysfunction, they’d find these skits more bittersweet or sad than humorous. This one was particularly poignant, as it revealed so much of Eunice’s sad life and the futility of her unrealistic dreams.

No matter how funny the Family sketches were - and they really were - there's always been an underlying sadness, frustration and barely contained rage in the Eunice character. Any "Eunice" wouldn't stand a chance in this life with a "mama" like that.

  • @mythicky

you feel for Eunice. It maybe true she is a doormat, but when you live in her situation, you cannot blame her. It isn't her fault. Many fail to realize that it is Eunice that does everything for everybody and is never appreciated. She is also in a catch 22. For example if she stays with Mama and continues on the road she is on, she is a "failure" according to her family, but if she up and left Mama she will be viewed as someone who abandoned her.

Wow as many have commented watching these episodes as an adult, take on new meaning. The comedy was always perfection however the serious story lines really tug at the heartstrings. When I was younger I always looked at this as pure comedy not fully understanding the relationship between Eunice and her mother. The writers for the show were simply outstanding. Sadly we don’t have many good shows like this any longer. Corrupted Hollywood with its elitist political agenda has ruined entertainment. Hopefully we can get back to well produced entertainment someday.

This one is sad and painful and I'm not sure why the audience was laughing.
As much as I've always studied and loved the brilliant Family series and stand in awe of the character work, I think it was a mistake to take them into dark territory like this. There's often a sad undercurrent to them if you look closely, but the ones that end on a comic note are more satisfying. I wonder why they made that choice towards the end.
