This was my late mother's all time favorite show. She had a rough time in her life. She was widowed at a young age and she couldn't afford to go out for entertainment so she stayed in and of all the shows on TV this is the one she watched religiously. It was her escape from the world for an hour a week. Of course since she was watching it her five children were also watching it. I was the oldest and fairly young so much of the humor was lost on me until later. Now looking back it's one of my favorites as well and every time I watch this show either in re-runs or on the internet like here I am reminded of those evenings so many years ago sitting around our little black and white TV watching this show together. Thank you Carol Burnett!
I too was brought up by a widowed mother in this era and likewise saw this show bring her temporary escape and joy. We had true treasures back then and as life goes on and the world grows less familar, l remain grateful for these memories.
Beautiful story, thank you for sharing.
nunya biznez Lovely memory of your mother. ❤️
What great story YOU write well. Wow. Me TWO with my mom and CHRISTMAS time WAS special.watch an THESE shows. Time GONE bye.
nunya: Those memories are so wonderful to treasure.
I mean, the acting in this is top notch. These Family sketches have got to be some of the best TV you’ll ever see.
Carol's show was good theater in our homes once a week.🎊👏
Ya, but kinda disconcerting.
@RangerMan-yv7rl It is very dark, under the surface. Carol once said that during rehearsals with Dame Maggie Smith, they read it straight just for the sake of doing it. She said it was basically horrifying. You're right though. It's very dark.
@@PonderousProse ah Maggie Smith! Another great!
@@RangerMan-yv7rl Absolutely! She's always been a favorite of mine.
Not one person ever gave Eunice even a crumb of encouragement, not a second of encouragement.
Yes, that's correct. I guess that's how the writers intended the Eunice character to be treated...
Exactly. These skits are funny and very sadatthe same time.
And that is why she became so angry and bitter. She was expected to sacrifice her life for others. But never got the love and respect she wanted so much.
You realize that this isn’t real, don’t you? It’s make believe.
@tmckenny2994 Good writing, like acting, is about motivation and personal history and is worth analyzing. STFU.
Madeline Kahn was one of a kind. She was taken from this world far too soon. I loved her in 'Young Frankenstein'. This skit was brilliant! Thank you for sharing.
👏🏻
I read Mel Brooks' book about his life and career and he spoke so highly of Madeline Kahn. He got her to play in Blazing Saddles too.
@@believer7280 History of the World part 1 is another comedic masterpiece with Madeline in it.
Madeline was not old when she played Granny?
Madeline Kahn FOREVER. ❤🙌🏻✨️
Carol Burnett + Madeline Kahn = pure comedy gold!
I wholeheartedly agree!
the real movie was Blazing saddles,,with Harvey Korman no less....

I would give anything to be a kid again and watch a family sketch with both my mom and grandmother! They loved and laughed just as hard as I did over Eunice and Mama lol!!!
Jimmy Dickinson nicely said
me too,a great time in history.
You can: watch a sketch that was one of their favorites, and think of the both of them. Keep an open heart and talk to them as if they are sitting next to you. They will know you're thinking of them :)
Carol and Vickie are AWESOME!
Oh yes, my mom and I used to watch these together and just laugh and laugh.
I have no idea, how Vicki Lawrence could recite her lines and not bust out laughing!
She is loaded with talent.
She’s being excellent!
It had to have taken several takes, lol.
The pepperpot playhouse always makes me chuckle.😂
Carol and Vicki are national treasures. This has to be one of the funniest skits they did. "In our circles...in our circles...in our circles."
Madeline Kahn was so amazing. Blazing Saddles comes to mind.

@@ronaldevans9043 That's the main attraction to the Eunice character, for years TV sitcoms were always so nice and polite to each other at home, too often at times, too phony,
I would find it refreshing when they started cursing and yelling more often (more funny and normal that way).
@@bobbyfrancis8957 you got it right. Always too nice and polite. Unless it was "A very special episode". Lol
I love Mama's lines: "What kind of smut is this play?" & "Well, you ain't got 3 friends much less 100!" Haha!
Poor Eunice...can't catch a break.
Poor Eunice cut down at every turn! It's a wonder she didn't become a psychopath and do.her whole family in!🤪😡

Eunice wore that same dress, and those white sandle shoes, 😂!!! 💓
That horrible floral dress in fall colors. I hoped one day to see her in something else but she was like a cartoon character that lived in the same costume or Matlock in the same grey suit.
madeline is seamless in this, her character fits right in with the family. this family is so believable, it's way more than just a skit, you completely buy into the characters and their personalities, brilliantly written by dick clair and jenna mcmahon.

We must be around the same age because I've followed Carol the same way through out my life
Always loved Carol Burnett and then when I was 27 I saw Madeline Kahn and loved her too. Never knew they'd done anything together so this is a treat - two of America's great comedic talents working in perfect balance, neither one upstaging the other, both delivering first-rate comedy and acting, each enhancing the other's performance. Dang I feel lucky!

Same here.
So sorry, Sis!
Madeline kahn, what a true classic genius !!! 👍😂😂😂 And with Carol burnett, is there anything better? 👏♥️♥️😂
Carol Burnett is brilliant as Eunice
At 15:25, Eunice mentions she got an honorable mention for a - clay ashtray? In the "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" TV program there's an episode of a boys summer camp; almost all the boys were making clay ashtrays, only one of them had any artistic value. Did the teacher feel sorry for Eunice, and this episode is saying Eunice has no art experience at all, that's why Thelma said "So What"?
@@bobbyfrancis8957 No matter what Eunice did, Thelma would denigrate it. Like she mocked Eunice's choice of a husband and then mocked her twice as hard when the marriage failed.
When I said only one of the boys had any artistic value, I meant one of the boys in that episode actually made a human statue. But Eunice has no talent, like all the rest ( maybe her ashtray was neater than the others)?
I went to Madeline Kahn s house in Atlanta in the 80s. She was such a cute little lady with loads of talent.
My favorite was when Eunice was on the Gong Show singing Feelings!!🤣🤣
Hello Mary how are you doing... I saw your comment and I decide to stop by and say hi....
Chose the worst possible song
OMGosh, I’d totally forgotten about Eunice on the Gong Show. I remember seeing it originally, not sure what year it was, mid 70s perhaps, it was later in the series because The Family” sketch had been on for awhile, and we knew all the characters really well.
Eunice on The Gong Show was when worlds collide. I really remember so well wondering how the sketch was going to end. Another humiliation of Eunice? Eunice again being the butt of the joke? Or maybe Eunice having, until now, an undiscovered Barbra Streisand vocal quality that finally found its way out? When Eunice started singing horribly a horrible song, completely convinced she DID have a Babs thing going on, gets instantly gonged, and the camera simply closed in on her face, which was a study in total devastation, and didn’t change while the camera either irised out completely, or the spotlight dimmed out, I just remember being so sad for her, and thinking how brave Carol and her crew were to end the scene like that, no gag, no joke, just a very human moment.
Eunice. Eunice. So identifiable. Dreams always just out of reach. And that crazy mother always in her head.
I never knew Madeline Khan was on this show. Her charisma is great. Beautiful and an awesome actress.
Carol Burnett. May we never lose her
Thanks to her show, we never will.
“Failure’s not so bad. Hell, you still got us.”
I remember my Grandma laughed at that one. I was younger so I asked what was funny, because I was still laughing at the earlier material, she explained why it was said, which made it funnier. Realised our family was in good shape.

The way Carol acts awkward as if gawky like burlesque sometimes is classic. M the classless family in posh resto so loud till they were thrown out! Lol. The dumbo secretary with Harvey Korman.
“What do you know about direction anyway Miss Cat Woman on Mars?”
RIP Madeline Kahn and Harvey Korman, former costars of "Blazing Saddles". Two very talented comedians.
I recall in the Carol Burnett Show, Harvey was all slicked up looking very hansem playing a Sea Captain. Carol played a dame all over Harvey's character. He picked her up n dropped her into the sea! Lolol 😂

My little brother and I loved watching This show with our oldest Sister Susie. She didn't know how wonderful this show was. We practically begged to watch The Carol Burnett show when she had her Television. She never let us watch. But when we got our own Television we laughed and laughed at Carol Burnette's show, Mama and Eunice. She would walk into the room asking what are we watching cause there was nothing on television that day. We said, "The Carol Burnette show." She hurries into the living room to watch it. My brother and I looked at each other thinking that she never wanted to watch the show when she was the only one with a television acting snotty with us. A couple of times all three of us watched the show together. There was laughter all the time as we watched. After that we got along with her some-what because of the Carol Burnette show, we all had something that we had in common we all had some kind of a friendship. Those were the days.
