This was my late mother's all time favorite show. She had a rough time in her life. She was widowed at a young age and she couldn't afford to go out for entertainment so she stayed in and of all the shows on TV this is the one she watched religiously. It was her escape from the world for an hour a week. Of course since she was watching it her five children were also watching it. I was the oldest and fairly young so much of the humor was lost on me until later. Now looking back it's one of my favorites as well and every time I watch this show either in re-runs or on the internet like here I am reminded of those evenings so many years ago sitting around our little black and white TV watching this show together. Thank you Carol Burnett!

I would give anything to be a kid again and watch a family sketch with both my mom and grandmother! They loved and laughed just as hard as I did over Eunice and Mama lol!!!

Carol and Vicki are amazing. They nailed their performances, and Harry was incredible! Loved Mama's family, I have it on DVD and still enjoy watching it in 2023.😂

Always loved Carol Burnett and then when I was 27 I saw Madeline Kahn and loved her too. Never knew they'd done anything together so this is a treat - two of America's great comedic talents working in perfect balance, neither one upstaging the other, both delivering first-rate comedy and acting, each enhancing the other's performance. Dang I feel lucky!
I remember when the Carol Burnett show was on the air, back then I didn’t appreciate it like I do now… This was in a time when people laughed and wasn’t offended over every little thing like today. It’s sad how society is so tense we need to start laughing again after all it is the best medicine…

I remember an old episode of SNL when she was The Bride of Frankenstein and when she woke up from her altered state she sang "I Feel Pretty" from West Side Story. I remember my Grandma laughed at that one. I was younger so I asked what was funny, because I was still laughing at the earlier material, she explained why it was said, which made it funnier. Realised our family was in good shape.

madeline is seamless in this, her character fits right in with the family. this family is so believable, it's way more than just a skit, you completely buy into the characters and their personalities, brilliantly written by dick clair and jenna mcmahon.
At 15:25, Eunice mentions she got an honorable mention for a - clay ashtray? In the "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" TV program there's an episode of a boys summer camp; almost all the boys were making clay ashtrays, only one of them had any artistic value. Did the teacher feel sorry for Eunice, and this episode is saying Eunice has no art experience at all, that's why Thelma said "So What"?

I love this one so much. In 1981 I tried out my directing chops in college by bringing this particular sketch to the stage. Except on the TV I had "Family Feud" instead of "Bowlin' for Dollars" because that's actually what was on! It was open for one lunch time matinee performance, fond memories.
OMGosh, I’d totally forgotten about Eunice on the Gong Show. I remember seeing it originally, not sure what year it was, mid 70s perhaps, it was later in the series because The Family” sketch had been on for awhile, and we knew all the characters really well. Eunice on The Gong Show was when worlds collide. I really remember so well wondering how the sketch was going to end. Another humiliation of Eunice? Eunice again being the butt of the joke? Or maybe Eunice having, until now, an undiscovered Barbra Streisand vocal quality that finally found its way out? When Eunice started singing horribly a horrible song, completely convinced she DID have a Babs thing going on, gets instantly gonged, and the camera simply closed in on her face, which was a study in total devastation, and didn’t change while the camera either irised out completely, or the spotlight dimmed out, I just remember being so sad for her, and thinking how brave Carol and her crew were to end the scene like that, no gag, no joke, just a very human moment.
My little brother and I loved watching This show with our oldest Sister Susie. She didn't know how wonderful this show was. We practically begged to watch The Carol Burnett show when she had her Television. She never let us watch. But when we got our own Television we laughed and laughed at Carol Burnette's show, Mama and Eunice. She would walk into the room asking what are we watching cause there was nothing on television that day. We said, "The Carol Burnette show." She hurries into the living room to watch it. My brother and I looked at each other thinking that she never wanted to watch the show when she was the only one with a television acting snotty with us. A couple of times all three of us watched the show together. There was laughter all the time as we watched. After that we got along with her some-what because of the Carol Burnette show, we all had something that we had in common we all had some kind of a friendship. Those were the days.

When Eunice started singing horribly a horrible song, completely convinced she DID have a Babs thing going on, gets instantly gonged, and the camera simply closed in on her face, which was a study in total devastation, and didn’t change while the camera either irised out completely, or the spotlight dimmed out, I just remember being so sad for her, and thinking how brave Carol and her crew were to end the scene like that, no gag, no joke, just a very human moment.
That look on Eunice's face at the end spoke volumes.

My little brother and I loved watching This show with our oldest Sister Susie. She didn't know how wonderful this show was. We practically begged to watch The Carol Burnett show when she had her Television. She never let us watch. But when we got our own Television we laughed and laughed at Carol Burnette's show, Mama and Eunice. She would walk into the room asking what are we watching cause there was nothing on television that day. We said, "The Carol Burnette show." She hurries into the living room to watch it. My brother and I looked at each other thinking that she never wanted to watch the show when she was the only one with a television acting snotty with us. A couple of times all three of us watched the show together. There was laughter all the time as we watched. After that we got along with her some-what because of the Carol Burnette show, we all had something that we had in common we all had some kind of a friendship. Those were the days.
