It floors me every time I click on these episodes and see her with that hairdo and damn outfit. And then she talks and the accent spews out lol. I often keep my playlist of The Family on repeat. I even prepare meals in preparation for back to back episodes, just as if this were a modern day show. Carol, I truly thank YOU for Eunice! 💚
I wanted to jump up & yell "Go Ed, go!!" when he finally put those two wenches in their place. Love these skits so much. I loved them when they were new, & they're even funnier to me now that I've had more life experience.
Eunice only heard "I don't want you with me cause I want to personally interfere with your life and happiness." even if that's not what was meant or said.
These skits are plays, that any playwright would be proud to pen. They are absolutely brilliant in the scripting and acting. So sad no one is doing such complex skits anymore for TV.
Poor Mickey...cannot keep a secret!! 🤣😂 The innocence of it all! And glad Ed stood his ground! Harvey brought out the pain of that role! 😂 Love how he always looks out for Mickey's feelings and well being. Mickey's the only one who admired him!

Interesting he said both he and Carol felt more comfortable hiding behind characters and Eunice is her absolute favorite. Everyone involved said Carol is nothing like Eunice but apparently Ed is Harvey. He didn't care for Roger Bradford either.
I always felt sorry for the Ed character, played so brilliantly by Harvey. He was constantly humiliated and taken for granted by both of those high-strung (a nice way to say it) women, and was always shot down. I think he would have risen to the challenge if he had been given any respect or consideration. He gravitated toward Mickey Hart (another stellar characterization) because he was given respect by his employee. He was probably very effective at the hardware store. The worst insult was when Eunice told her sister Ellen that "Duke Reeves" was the only man she ever loved! And that she ended up "stuck with" Ed!
I just recently learned of The Carol Burnett show. I have never seen a single clip. When I first looked at this my first thought was how can something that goes on for 15 minutes be funny? But I thought I would at least give it a chance. OMG. I feel like I just discovered a gold mine.
Great that Ed found love and friendship with Mickey,bringing Joy into his life considering he had to to deal with his negative wife and mother in-law,and great that he stood up for himself in the end.
Truly the crafting of Mickey and Ed characters was such brilliant stuff. Hearing Korman interviewed about the art of comedy that the masters told him was amazing. It made watching this all the more fun!!
I think Mama, Ed, Philip, and Eunice are tragic characters in their own way. I think Mama had a terrible husband and it caused her to bring up her children in the overbearing manner. Ellen had it good because she was the favorite, but Philip was constantly shut down and, of course, Eunice got it the worst because she was Mama's primary caregiver.
Harvey korman and Tim Conway gave the audiences more than you could imagine in humor and laughter ..I laugh 7 days a week rewatching all these skits....watching Harvey crack up is the epitome of the world of humor...it is so genuine...thank you for all the laughter.....RIP ...
Ed always reminds me of my Dad. He's not anything at all like the character, he just cracks up everytime Korman has anything to say. Tells me Ed is just like his older brother (also named Ed) who passed away many years ago. Thanks for the clip, and thanks to the cast of the Carol Burnett Show.

If a show was all friendly fine and dandy , fair etc. it wouldn't be funny to others and the WThell did he/she just say wouldn't pull the critics in. Quirky how TV needs to work. Plus if Halloween was only one costume, it would get boring quick just like todays copy cat TV. Oops. TV's alright still.
From what I've read, Carol Burnett's upbringing was much like this. These "Family" sketches must have been therapeutic for her, help her get over the pain of the past.

I once saw the day-before-broadcast dress rehearsal with them all ; they couldn’t say their lines for laughing, especially Tim Conway. It amazed me that only 24 hours later they could deliver their lines, word perfect, and straight faced.
These are one of the episodes where things flip, and Ed becomes a heel and you feel bad for Eunice. That is the beauty of the Family...no heroes here, everyone is flawed.
Money in that case could’ve solved a few and couple closer. I hate to admit it but it is money sometimes that buys happiness. It upset me lots when Eunuce counted her lost hopes of getting a better living but to use that emergency money they keot fir the family was unwise even if Micky deserved a dream breather and Ed could benefit from that trip wider by having an assistant with him. Money and a bit of consideration was to solve that issue but they don’t have much. 🤷🏻♀️
A classic episode of Carol,Vicki, Tim and Harvey, the show was always hilarious, they must've have so much fun making them, their imaginations always ran riot!!

Carol said many times that she received so much mail bout "The Family" sketch. It really touched people and 4 some it hit 2 close 2 home. That alone is a testament 2 the talents of Vicki, Carol, Harvey and Tim. Today's "talent" cant hold a candle 2 this crew. Glad i can relax, watch this, laugh and enjoy real talent.

I know you are not with us anymore, but I had to write this; I was younger, when I saw this skit (Spring, 1976?) and, I thought the 'Ed' character was rude, simple minded, and just...horny, wanting to see Go-Go girls so badly, that he walks out on his wife & Mother In Law..... (CONT.) ...BUT, now as an Adult, with some of Life's 'knocks' (not to mention a NPD Mother who belittles and consistently demeans my accomplishments...at 51), Mr. Korman's acting here is just....GENIUS. His mannerisms toward the end, with his voice & body language; remember, he's mixing DRAMA with COMEDY, and it shows that he KNOWS what 'Ed' is going through, and, is DESERVING of his outburst. We are ALL aware of Mr. Korman's 4th wall crack-ups, and falling victim to Tim Conway's comedic jabs to the point where it was almost unprofessional, but here, he almost becomes BEAUTIFUL when he stands up for himself; his breathing, the dramatic cracks in his voice at 14:52, and his take off into the night....and THAT, shows talent, pacing, and grace. THIS (along with Carol & Vicki's acting talents) will NEVER be seen again, within COMEDY, so.....I'm sorry, Harv....forgive?! ; )
these are so good, beautifully written and acted. brilliant in it's own unique genre. this one was even darker than most, eunice always wanting to leave ed but would have no way of making ends meet, too set in her ways to do something about her situation, ed just trying to get from one day to the next, hardware his whole life... written in that tragic american middle class struggle.
The bygone days...I feel so fortunate that I was able to grow up in the 70s compared to the madness of our world today. TV was wondrous back then especially with today's reality shows passing for entertainment. This was laugh out loud funny for us gathered around the gigantic console television set. We accepted it for what it was, a comedy show featuring skits. Now the comment section is filled with a bunch of wretches actually bragging that they had a dysfunctional family, grow up! If it triggers you, then move on!

His mannerisms toward the end, with his voice & body language; remember, he's mixing DRAMA with COMEDY, and it shows that he KNOWS what 'Ed' is going through, and, is DESERVING of his outburst.
We are ALL aware of Mr. Korman's 4th wall crack-ups, and falling victim to Tim Conway's comedic jabs to the point where it was almost unprofessional, but here, he almost becomes BEAUTIFUL when he stands up for himself; his breathing, the dramatic cracks in his voice at 14:52, and his take off into the night....and THAT, shows talent, pacing, and grace.
THIS (along with Carol & Vicki's acting talents) will NEVER be seen again, within COMEDY, so.....I'm sorry, Harv....forgive?! ; )
Seriously, Mother Harper and Eunice became characters unto themselves. Vicky and Carol just paused for a few ticks. 😁
these are so good, beautifully written and acted. brilliant in it's own unique genre. this one was even darker than most, eunice always wanting to leave ed but would have no way of making ends meet, too set in her ways to do something about her situation, ed just trying to get from one day to the next, hardware his whole life... written in that tragic american middle class struggle.
And yet, it's still funny.

The bygone days...I feel so fortunate that I was able to grow up in the 70s compared to the madness of our world today. TV was wondrous back then especially with today's reality shows passing for entertainment. This was laugh out loud funny for us gathered around the gigantic console television set. We accepted it for what it was, a comedy show featuring skits. Now the comment section is filled with a bunch of wretches actually bragging that they had a dysfunctional family, grow up! If it triggers you, then move on!
