Carol embodies the craziness that is Eunice! From her walk, to her wild facial expressions, like at 10:07! It floors me every time I click on these episodes and see her with that hairdo and damn outfit. And then she talks and the accent spews out lol. I often keep my playlist of The Family on repeat. I even prepare meals in preparation for back to back episodes, just as if this were a modern day show. Carol, I truly thank YOU for Eunice! 💚

I always felt sorry for the Ed character, played so brilliantly by Harvey. He was constantly humiliated and taken for granted by both of those high-strung (a nice way to say it) women, and was always shot down. I think he would have risen to the challenge if he had been given any respect or consideration. He gravitated toward Mickey Hart (another stellar characterization) because he was given respect by his employee. He was probably very effective at the hardware store. The worst insult was when Eunice told her sister Ellen that "Duke Reeves" was the only man she ever loved! And that she ended up "stuck with" Ed!

I think Mama, Ed, Philip, and Eunice are tragic characters in their own way. I think Mama had a terrible husband and it caused her to bring up her children in the overbearing manner. Ellen had it good because she was the favorite, but Philip was constantly shut down and, of course, Eunice got it the worst because she was Mama's primary caregiver.

If a show was all friendly fine and dandy , fair etc. it wouldn't be funny to others and the WThell did he/she just say wouldn't pull the critics in. Quirky how TV needs to work. Plus if Halloween was only one costume, it would get boring quick just like todays copy cat TV. Oops. TV's alright still.

It upset me lots when Eunuce counted her lost hopes of getting a better living but to use that emergency money they keot fir the family was unwise even if Micky deserved a dream breather and Ed could benefit from that trip wider by having an assistant with him. Money and a bit of consideration was to solve that issue but they don’t have much. 🤷🏻‍♀️

....I apologize, Mr. Korman. I know you are not with us anymore, but I had to write this; I was younger, when I saw this skit (Spring, 1976?) and, I thought the 'Ed' character was rude, simple minded, and just...horny, wanting to see Go-Go girls so badly, that he walks out on his wife & Mother In Law..... (CONT.)
...BUT, now as an Adult, with some of Life's 'knocks' (not to mention a NPD Mother who belittles and consistently demeans my accomplishments...at 51), Mr. Korman's acting here is just....GENIUS. His mannerisms toward the end, with his voice & body language; remember, he's mixing DRAMA with COMEDY, and it shows that he KNOWS what 'Ed' is going through, and, is DESERVING of his outburst.
We are ALL aware of Mr. Korman's 4th wall crack-ups, and falling victim to Tim Conway's comedic jabs to the point where it was almost unprofessional, but here, he almost becomes BEAUTIFUL when he stands up for himself; his breathing, the dramatic cracks in his voice at 14:52, and his take off into the night....and THAT, shows talent, pacing, and grace.
THIS (along with Carol & Vicki's acting talents) will NEVER be seen again, within COMEDY, so.....I'm sorry, Harv....forgive?! ; )

these are so good, beautifully written and acted. brilliant in it's own unique genre. this one was even darker than most, eunice always wanting to leave ed but would have no way of making ends meet, too set in her ways to do something about her situation, ed just trying to get from one day to the next, hardware his whole life... written in that tragic american middle class struggle.

The bygone days...I feel so fortunate that I was able to grow up in the 70s compared to the madness of our world today. TV was wondrous back then especially with today's reality shows passing for entertainment. This was laugh out loud funny for us gathered around the gigantic console television set. We accepted it for what it was, a comedy show featuring skits. Now the comment section is filled with a bunch of wretches actually bragging that they had a dysfunctional family, grow up! If it triggers you, then move on!
