Fun fact: They BUILT that McDonalds from scratch in the parking lot of the Coweta County Tag Office in Newnan, Ga. Because they were serving food, they had to go through a health inspection. When the movie was done, they tore the entire thing down to the ground again. Got a chance to watch Michael Keaton in the final scene where he looks across the road at the restaurant.

@@TheLazyass111 "When" was the rise of middle management. Everyone bitching about how unskilled workers are clamoring for $15 an hour, when the most unskilled, unnecessary job in any workforce is making six figures.
Well something worth considering, is they were applying manufacturing ideas to hamburger production. Taylorism or "scientific management" as it was called back then, was chasing the idea of how can we make things with the minimum amount of time, and movement. Anything that could be supported by moving equipment around like a production line. Them chalking out and tracing the vague floorplan and doing a dress rehearsal was an expression of this idea; though what Taylor did, was time every movement, with stopwatches and later high speed motion cameras, to track the movement of typical work and figure out where wasted time was. The same ideas were even applied in the home in the so called "step saving kitchen" but what most designers know now as work triangles. So the culture of efficiency definitely has an effect on the production of mcdonalds and the attempt at streamlining the kitchen layout for time efficiency. The idea of self service also wasn't that remarkable, as across the US, the Automat was wildly popular in most cities. A nickel per plate or cup, for good cheap food, at all hours of the day. The big difference with automats, is they often didn't have a kitchen behind the rows of dispensers, but instead had central plants, that produced in massive quantities in an industrial bakery or kitchen. They then trucked out the food to the satellite locations and plated them. There was a lot of ideas around how to take the principles of mass production and adapt them in the machine age, Mcdonald's real innovation was combining assembly line production, taylorism, self service or drive thru service, and the franchising or chain store model.
@@jamesofallthings3684 Well that's the point of the movie. Kroc really messed with the formula and started mass reproducing stores, each worse than the previous one. It went from a food business to a profit business.
I worked at Mcdonald's for 4 years in high school. While the layout and optimization has dramatically changed the core philosophy still remains in the stores to this day. These guys had one of the most revolutionary ideas in the food and service industry. These men were genius.

That's why my goto "restaurant" is a taco truck that caters to construction workers. It's cash only, tax included, no tips. You get your food in under a minute, and it's perfect. The McDonald's has a fifteen minute wait these days. My how things have changed.
The thing I love most about this is at 1:40. They kick the staff odd the court, but are there with refreshments to show staff they are valued. A very minor thing that endears the brothers to you.
Yeah I really liked that too, kinda resonated with me because while McDonald's today is hell to work at, the better one I worked at did allow us free drinks. Management that care even a little is a blessing

This movie was great, but they dramatized the ending heavily. The McDonald’s brother both said they were very happy with their deal. They knew they didn’t have the business expertise to expand like Kroc so they cashed out.
I was thinking if Kroc never took over the restaurant who knows maybe McDonald's might of died just like the millions burger joint at that time

@Tom Fox They always wanted a small operation from the very beginning they really didn't care once Kroc took off. They made 2 million from the deal which today would be 16 million then made even more by buying McDonald's stock. And before you say it the handshake royalties is a myth it never happened.

This whole "discovery" sequence of the entire McDonald's operation is just electric. And you're not gonna get much more talent than Keaton, Lynch, and Offerman.
JC Lynch, like Judy Greer, is such an underrated modern character actor. A la, The Drew Carey Show.

Gotta appreciate how John Lynch can display a wide range of acting abilities. From a absolute psycho creep in Zodiac to a nice and honest man in the Founder.

John Lynch Carroll severely underrated, but there's a reason why he's worked with a lot of the all time greats.

Nick Offerman is great in this but his acting is very one-note. He's the same character in all his roles.
What's interesting about this is it's not the people doing it, it's how the system is operated.
Now this scene gives you a great lesson about your target audience. You see, the new restaurant format was not fit with McDonald's old customers(young adults) that are more into hanging out and waiting for food with friends. hence their inability to understand getting out of their car and ordering. However, it was a great fit for (Kids and families) that valued convenience and fast pick up.
Now they are making same mistake by marketing to young adults again (McCafe) away from their core family audience they made a name (over 50 years) marketing to...

From a historical perspective this movie got a lot things right. Though they dramatized the war between the McDonald brothers and Ray Croc by the end of the movie.
What was the reality of the war, did Ray Croc crush them immediately?
100% You have to add drama in movies though. Otherwise its a MBA Case study. Those can be very dry...

@National Socialism yeah in interviews one of them admitted to using the couple million they made to immediately purchase stock in the rising company. His words were "we made a lot of money." Probably their biggest loss was being erased from the history of the company, but they became multi millionaires.

This movie was incredible. Michael Keaton was absolutely BRILLIANT in this. He was amazing to watch on screen.
I use to work at Hallmark, we went through all of this years ago to improve countless processes in the card plants. LEAN is cool.

Wonderful use of that music from Napoleon Dynamite!😀 Brilliants scene. To take a topic as mundane as opening and operating a fast food joint and turn out an excellent movie.....well, kudos to everyone involved from the actors to all the hundreds of people involved in putting together a film. This was an excellent movie.
Penguin Cafe Orchestra has been around much longer than Napoleon Dynamite.
The tune is called “Music for a New Found Harmonium.” There is a great trad-Irish band called Four Men and a Dog and they have a great rendition of this tune.
This and his role in the Other Guys reignited Michael Keaton's career. He played Ray Kroc masterfully. But this scene was one of the best in the movie. The storytelling aspect was fun to watch.
Not to mention Birdman and Spotlight in between those films.
I loved Michael Keaton in this movie. And I absolutely hated Ray Kroc for what he did to the McDonald brothers. ❤🤬
Keaton never needed re-ignition, Hollywood just does not make many movies call for such actors these days.
@@madgang201still should've won the oscar for best actor instead of eddie redmayne. my dad never got over that and to see keaton put his speech in his pocket that night broke my heart. my dad HATED eddie redmayne and you don't want to know what he thought of "the danish girl" as the things he said would destroy snowflakes.

Its amazing how the principals that they discussed here and in this movie ARE how In-N-Out runs today. Most Mc Donalds are a far stretch from this..In-N-Outs are a well oiled machine, they have also kept their menus simple to help facilitate efficiencies.
Guess you don’t know how expansion works and how it affects “principals”
As a restaurant owner myself I can verify that the biggest thing to slow down production is an overly complicated menu, and customers that want customized items.

It's amazing, not only did they redesign the kitchen to have a perfect flow but they also made use of the mob mentality of humans to reprogram them from drive thru to window orders

I've seen this movie before I started working in manufacturing and someone said today we are gonna learn LEAN and this shot back to my mind in an instant.
Just the way the brothers tell their story - including the tennis court layout - is worth the price of this movie!

I did a large Media Installation for a Client that tasked us with moving a large number of customers through it per hour. While planning it, I saw this movie. Guess who requested a two day Trial run on site, Drew the whole Floor Plan on the ground and Had a bunch of standins Walk through the whole process?
Yep, I did. Client thought I was crazy but the whole Thing ran Like a Clockwork in the end.

@@Elcore We Set Up a Coffee and cake Buffet and made sure that everybody at Our clients company knew of this. Lots of employees showed Up to Help as standins for nothing but all the cake they could eat and a Chance to Take Part in our project.

Props to John Carrol Lynch s acting. He went from an an absolute creep in Zodiaz(2007) to an honest good hearted business man in The Founder. Very underappreciated actor
He was also good on The Walking Dead.
This really shows the two brothers how they were, as a perfect Duo
Mac, sweetheart with a Business mind and a great communicator and Dick the reserved but cheeky mad genius who perfects the operation
What a cast you have here. 3 great veteran actors. Keaton, Offerman, Lynch. I mean how can you go wrong?

I used to work in the industry and for a very long time have been most jaded and very hurt by my experiences while working for the Arches.
This clip of film helps me to understand the struggles of the founders were my struggles.
It takes every one working on the team to make the dream - work.
All while we humans are truly trying to trust the ritual and routine that it IS actually making a difference to a necessary cause.
Everyone has to eat. It's a basic thing.
To help people get fed is a bit like teaching a baby or small child to eat and thrive without an umbilical or breast.
I had soo many frustrated feelings while working in the food industry. I never felt acknowledged or respected.
This film clip speaks to me. I feel my efforts were worth it and made a difference to REAL people who really just want a touch of comfort by means of a warm or fresh meal.

After watching this movie I went to P. Terry’s Burger Stand on South Lamar Blvd, ordered from their walk up window and had the same experience as eating at the first McDonald’s. Another reason I love Austin, Texas and hamburgers!
This system is still in place to this day. It was one of Kroc’s absolutes: High quality, low waste. And over the years it’s been optimized.
Shame the employees aren’t as fast as the system has been designed for it to be.
They probably would be if the pay was better tho

Funny how motivation skyrockets downward providing Attitude and Bad companionship. I worked at McDonald’s for five years, saw good people leave and lazy people come and go. Everyday someone left.
But I’m still grateful for the experience I had and for the friendships I created.
These brothers turned science into mcdonalds. There's a reason why even with negative talk about the company. It's still the biggest real estate mogul in the world

The amazing thing is that lean principles were revolutionary to most people.

The issue is that despite the industrial revolution, the restaurant was the domain of the privileged who kept it expensive and pretentious, along with the controlling chef who chased accolades and premium prices. For 99% of people, they simply could not afford to eat out unless it was a special occasion or only light snacks from street stalls. Say what you want about fast food, but in the 1950s food was expensive and majority were malnourished. 50% of average worker's paycheck went on food and that was just basic food at home, compared to 10% in 1990.
Ironically, this is more how In-n-Out does it today.
Sony had to teach people how to use the original Walkman. People didn't get it.

There are still a lot of old school burger joints in California that have the walk up window.
Just goes to show that restaurants of any kind don't need extravagant openings. They just need to be in the right location.

I love the lean aspects of this show. You see it in The Bear as well. I got so excited when I saw it and shared with others, but they didn’t share my passion for Lean Thinking.

It's a shame that it feels weird how these employees are probably doing this voluntarily and not getting paid, to train and practice for a business that's not even open yet. They're doing this out of sheer loyalty. That would feel extremely rare in the modern era.

Im a Brit and this is great it makes me think that the first assembly line for Motor Cars the Ford Motor Company with the Model T has just been applyed to Burgers. The genius is thinking outside the box outside normal food delivery and seeing the efficiency and cost saving and extra sales . Original ideas always amaze when after it seems so obvious to you but someone found that obvious first and went worldwide (Obviously)😅
I was surprised that a movie about the history of McDonald's was so good.
Just think, if they hadn't served that one kid his bag of burgers, we may never know the insurmountable health problems and landfills, not to mention the iconic "Mac and Me". What a hero!
These guys spent hours working on this speedy-system to deliver food but they totally overlooked painting parking spots in the lot. 🤦♂

John Carroll Lynch has fast become one of my favorite actors - he's convincing in everything he does.
This is my favorite part of the film.
This is why it would be extremely difficult for me to be a ruthless businessman. once I realized where the money was, I would have cut the two brothers in some how.....oh, I'd have the lionshare but they would have portions that ensured they were well compensated.
He did cut them in, they walked away wealthy. The movie changed it up for dramatic effect.

It would a little wonky , but if the business shut down and they were still getting payed , I honestly don’t think it would be that hard to convince. If I was still getting payed to not have to work with real customers. That’s ez money in my mind

Honestly I haven't eaten a Mcdonald in almost twenty years, I prefer trying diferent places, never understood people than only wants to eat in a single place when there is so much variety to choose from.
People like comfort. They can go to the same place and get the same thing that they enjoy. I love variety, but don't have to have it. I can eat somewhere new daily, or eat the same meal day after day for years and not get tired of it.
The trouble with variety is the unpredictability. If you have the time, patience and willingness to be disappointed, then variety can be great. If you have a tight scheduled routine and just need to have reliability, then variety can be awful. When is McDonald's busiest? Before work, during the standard lunch time, and right after work. People have jobs, families and lives to get to, and just don't have the time to risk on variety.
