    One of the themes of this movie is "dignity." I think Dr. Shirley was impressed with Tony's aversion to shinning shoes, for anyone.

    • @jaystrickland4151
      @jaystrickland4151 10 месяцев назад

      Dr. Shirley knew that if a white man was shining shoes of a black man in the deep south they would lynch him. He was testing him to see his reaction make sure he had personal rules of conduct and the willingness to act on them. Such as protecting Dr. Shirley and his crew if there is a problem. Ie it wasn't just a pay check.

      yea he mirrored his own sense of pride and disdain at suffering indignities that he inevitably had as a black man during the time. someone who can say no is someone you want to deal with. someone who cant is a slave and of no use to anyone.

      @@titolovely8237 Its not like its some form of "indignity". If the man needs to have shiny shoes for a concert, he needs his shoes shined. Mahershala does an amazing job here, the air of dignity and elegance he carries with ease is amazing. You can tell he has a lot of respect for himself, but isn't arrogant, he understands he's dealing with a man who while not as educated, has just as much respect for himself. The way he moves is very deliberate, reminds me of his role in Moonlight, his demeanor just completely embodies the character. Viggo is obviously amazing as usual too.

      Even with the greatest treasures at display, I wouldnt want to live like the king of the age over living like I do already.
      So doc probably lived better than king george.
      But I get what you meant!

    I am a very critic person towards movies and dont finish a lot of em, but Ive watched this movie 5 times since it came out, and it makes me laugh so much. Tony is amazing, but off course the bond they create is very special too .Some movies have that X factor and for me this is one of those movies.

Something post pandemic Hollywood is somewhat lacking in. I enjoy cinema like this that has resonance and has something human to say. I’m not all into big budget spectacle alone!

    Here is Quotes from film:
    1. Dr. Don Shirley: "So if I'm not black enough and if I'm not white enough, then tell me, Tony, what am I?"
    2. Tony Lip: "The world's full of lonely people afraid to make the first move."
    3. Dr. Don Shirley: "Genius is not enough. It takes courage to change people's hearts."
    4. Tony Lip: "You know, my father used to say, whatever you do, do it 100%. When you work, work. When you laugh, laugh. When you eat, eat like it's your last meal."
    This is just for you :)
