Did I hear that correctly he struggled to sell milkshake machines? Anyone see the irony with this he took over McDonald's and put his milkshake machines in there and to this day don't work lmao 😅
Actually McDonalds used powdered milkshakes for a very long time and they always had milkshakes. He tried to convince the McDonald brothers to use it in all the stores, but they said ice cream only, so he used the powder anyway. Now they use soft serve ice cream machines, so they still do not use real ice cream.
The McDonalds brothers actually said Ray Kroc made them millionaires and they were happy about that. Becoming a millionaire in the 60s is the equivalent of over 10 million dollars today. I know plenty of people that would sell their restaurant for 20 million after taxes and never look back.
One of them got obscenely wealthy since he put most of the million dollar post tax payout for selling the McDonald's trademark (they sold the trademark since that's all they had that Kroc wanted) back into McDonald's Corporation stocks. That was right as McDonald's was taking off so his stocks skyrocketed in price as McDonald's got massive... the handshake deal was bullshit & both sides knew it was bullshit when they signed, the brothers just wanted a sop to their ego even if they knew that they were never going to get paid from it (and that 1% royalties on the trademark was an insane ask to begin with.)
Fun Fact. Had the brothers put the $2.7 million dollars into MCD stock when it IPO'd, the stock would be worth over $25 billion today and they would be getting almost $600 million per year in dividends. They would also be the largest shareholders at McDonalds and would pretty much have a large say in what goes on since they'd own about 10% of the company.
Well, technically they didn't have 2.7 million dollars to invest. Call it 2.0 million dollars since they both had to pay taxes on it when Ray bought them out in 1961. Both of the brothers wanted to be millionaires upon conclusion of the deal, and they had calculated their tax liability into the agreement. They were also retired and had turned over managment of the original San Bernardino location and their other locations to senior employees, so who knows what they wanted to do with the money they had just gained. McDonalds went public in 1965 so it would have been a good investment especially since both brothers were intimately knowledgable of the business. What is also funny is that Ray Croc did not gift any shares to his family either, except to Joan, so both families became disconnected to the empire that they started.
People just assume that the brothers could have easily done what ray croc did, but the reality is, they had no motivation to expand and show more people there great idea. He wasn't a shark investor, he didn't have as much money as the brothers at the time. The brothers had the money, the business, they had everything, but they lacked leadership. They didn't envision the future or had the drive to get there.
Fate is fickle. The McDonald’s brothers wouldn’t give Kroc 2% more in gross sales. He gets behind on his mortgage and ends up at the bank. Where he meets a man who tells him he’s in the real estate business not burgers.
That's the movie... in reality Kroc had to take out a second mortgage on his house to buy out the guy that the McDonald's Brothers had already sold the Midwest franchising rights to before they sold them to Kroc as well. The movie straight up ignored how badly the McDonald's Brothers had fucked over Kroc first... causing him to be on the brink of bankruptcy & the movie also glosses over the numerous guys that the McDonald's Brothers had already driven into bankruptcy through failed franchising attempts before Kroc finally figured out how to do it successfully.
@johnjeffreys6440 no... but they did sell the McDonald's trademark to Kroc & had to change the name of their original McDonald's restaurant (Kroc opened a McDonald's across the street from them to drive it out of business.) One of the brothers actually got ridiculously wealthy since he invested most of his million dollar payout right into McDonald's stock when it was still super cheap.
@@nationalsocialism3504 ok. thanks It would have been nice if both brothers did that and then thanked Kroc down the line with a little sarcasm haha Interesting story though No one really knows all the details about who took advantage of who I’m guessing.
@johnjeffreys6440 I was taught at Hamburger University when going through manager training as a teenager over 20 years ago... that basically the handshake deal was agreed to by Kroc to close the deal but he never meant to follow through for a second (and the McDonald's Brothers were painted as kind of naive for believing that he would & arrogant for even asking... but that combination of naivete & arrogance is why they never succeeded in the first place.) Kroc was a great man... warts and all, the McDonald's Brothers were definitely painted in the most glowing way possible in this movie hiding their own warts and shortcomings. Kroc definitely fucked them over the "handshake deal" but it wasn't serious to anyone involved except them & they had previously fucked Kroc over very badly almost driving him into bankruptcy and losing his house.
Ray Kroc became frustrated with the McDonald brothers' {Richard & Maurice} desire to maintain a small number of restaurants. The brothers also consistently told Kroc he could not make changes to things such as the original blueprint. Kroc eventually decided he wanted control of the company entirely, Kroc bought the company in 1961 for $2.7 million, calculated so as to ensure each brother received $1 million after taxes. Speaking to someone about the buyout, Richard McDonald reportedly said that he had no regrets.

@markantony3875 you're 100% wrong. First off they only agreed to be bought out after Kroc made it clear he would tie them up in court for years and bankrupt them in the process at the time Kroc had the money to do it and their lawyer told them settle or go broke so they settled they never wanted to do that. Second Kroc agreed to give them a 1% royalty in perpetuity, but Kroc being the piece of garbage that he was screwed them on this amd it was a handshake deal so nothing could be done. @alegendarywolf3278 They didn't have to bend the truth on this one Ray Kroc was a failure in business until he stole the brothers' ideas and took over their business.
@chuckydall9250 Whatever. The McDonald Brothers had all their other business ventures fail too. They ended up making $25 million 2024 USD from Kroc in the end. Sounds like a nice payday for having only one location to me.
@markantony3875 The difference is Kroc was always a failure. The McDonald brothers created an extremely successful business that Kroc stole from!! So they should be thankful that he gave them a couple of million dollars back after he stole what amounted to billions of dollars from them is that what you're really saying?? You don't seem to understand that this was their business and Ray Kroc started selling franchises of THEIR business without ever telling them or compensating them. If someone stole your safe that had 5 million in it and the cops recovered it for you, but gave you back only a hundred grand and said hey they have the rest of the money just be happy you got 100k back better nothing that would well with you??
Ray Kroc was once asked why he named his restaurant McDonald's instead of naming the company after himself. He responded by asking:"Would you want to eat a Kroc Burger?"
The real innovation of croc was solving the first problem the brothers said they had, the quality control, standarization, thats what ray croc did, he even founded some kind of official education for the franchices.
The Title should be "Two stubborn brothers that always shot down good ideas and was hard to work with push a man to invest in real estate continue to hustle and see the bigger picture while also bag a new wife on the side." Should've just gave Ray that increase share of the profits in the contract
Calling bullshit on this. The McDonald brother's were well compensated. A million dollars for each in 1963 was a lot of money. Ray saw the future of McDonalds.
The story just wants you to see ray in a bad taste. In reality the McDonald’s brothers were grateful cuz without ray they woulda prolly still been one restaurant maybe even out of business. They never wanted to franchise and they had tried and failed
The brothers had no vision and were very difficult to work with. Ray Kroc made McDonald's what it is today. The brothers made a very large sum of money, much more than they ever would have without Ray Kroc.
They had vision but once they achieved a minor but great success they didn't know how to see it all the way through and we're clearly worried about losing control of the monster they created
There was never a handshake deal to begin with. He payed them 1 milion dolars per men. it would be 12 milion today. And don,t forget they had only at the moment the MC logo and nothing more.
Please for the love of God, Dont just concentrate on Kroc is bad, how about reading an interview about the brothers and telling anyone that they did not regret selling the Franchise to Kroc, and if they did not sell the fast food restaurant, it will not be as successful at it is. After the movie this released, did you see anyone in the McDonald family file a lawsuit? No, because they receive 1M according to them, and to the report, 1M at that time is equivalent to 10M at this time.
They should do a sequel. The formative years against the Whopper, other chains, and creation of Happy Meal/Chicken Nugget. They would be interesting movie too.
He grew their business and made them successful in franchising and they refused to up his commission from 1.4% They deserved everything they got. Had they given him a fare share he wouldn't have had to do the real-estate business on the side
No. Wrong, sorry. They were paid in some parts only: For the business idea, the name "MC D" actually, etc. Yet - they were also GIVEN the promise of a profit-sharing of the ( new ) company. But just as an oral "gentlemens'" agreement. And Kroc broke that: The brothers never saw a penny here.
Title is misleading, he not only made them money with his franchising of their store models, but he paid them WHAT THEY ASKED, when he approached them about buying them out. Also they were considering retiring anyway so they took up his offer. If anything the McDonald's brothers kind of screwed Ray by withholding the original San Bernidino location which he assume was part of their agreement when they had promised it to their employees. Yes Ray Kroc did blow up himself over time and his self-proclaimed title of 'The Founder' is misleading as yes, he did found the McDonald's corporation and set up the business models the company uses today, the speedy-system and the original concept was founded by the McDonald's brothers. A later CEO of the company (one he knew Ray Kroc himself) lamented the 'Founder business' was convoluted since 'there was plenty of acclaim to go around'. While a good movie, at times The Founder often portrays Ray in a more negative light than was true. Yes he was a naracisst at times, and a work-aholic, and made some choices in private and business that are frowned upon, but ultimately he was a decent man who wanted his slice of the American dream and he got it, and not only made himself wealthy, but plenty of others who got to enjoy the ride with him. Even the McDonald's brothers got their dream of being millionaires as they vowed to their own parents thanks to Ray pushing the McDonald's brand beyond what Mac and Dick could do on their own, and Dick himself who reported had the biggest animostity of the two brothers with Ray, commented there was no bad blood and he even considered Ray a friend.
the title here is incredibly biased, Ray Kroc made McDonalds what it is today. The original McDonald Brothers were very well taken care of for the ONE extremely successful restaurant. The idea that the original McDonald's brothers were robbed of their dream is the work of decades of mythbuilding. People just don't see the full picture.
Kroc did very well selling milkshake machines. He paid the McDonalds brothers a million plus for their interests. His net worth when he died was under 300 million but that’s close about a billion today.
Kroc did basically strongarm the McDonald brothers out but they did receive a sizeable payment for the time. Kroc of course expanded the business into an empire. The movie also should at least give a nod to White Castle as it was their food service methods of the 1920's that the McDonald brothers modified into the Speedee Service System not their own invention.
Put this in perspective from Australia, in 1971 first Mcdonalds opened in sydney In 1971 a decent house cost $40,000 AUD in 1971 , $1,000,000 USD was equivalent to $1,600,000 AUD IMAGINE being handed the equivalent payout of (40* suburban houses) and NEVER having to work again The original brothers were INNOVATORS who got well compensated # remember 1 hamburger meal cost $0.35 cents US When Ray discovered the first store RAY took a concept and made it a success beyond any imagination
Remember, they wanted to retire. They were done and had no plans to expand. Did not want to continue. It was a sweet deal for them and that's all that matters.@@alexx960
Not entirely. The McDonalds were the creative ones who revolutionized the process - they made it work. Kroc, on his own, would never have done what they did. That said, Kroc was certainly the better businessman. As I understand it, in reality, there was no ill-will between them. Dick claimed in an interview that he didn't feel that Kroc ripped them off. In fact, he was right: Kroc took all the risk. And if it had failed, the brothers would be way ahead.
You are absolutely wrong about the insinuation that Roy Kroc stole the McDonalds brand from the brothers. Dick McDonald mentioned in his final interview before his death (available on Amazon Prime) that he purchased a large portion of shares in the McDonald’s corporation shortly after selling out, and that he made “a lot of money” from this in the years since. Also, this movie is inaccurate about the royalties: Dick and Mack actually gave Kroc a choice - either he gave them $1m both up front, OR he agreed to a perpetual 0.5% royalty deal (half of what they ask for in the movie). It was difficult for Kroc, but he was able to sum up the $2m to buy them out to avoid the royalty deal. Don’t be fooled by the movie - in real life the McDonald brothers benefitted well from Kroc's success. They weren’t fools. The only travesty was that Kroc erased them from the history of McDonald's, claiming himself to be the founder. It was only after his death in the 80s that Dick and Mack were re-recognised as the true founders. PS. For the record, if a handshake deal is witnessed in the presence of attorneys, and a written follow-up made, it is just as legally binding as a signed contract. So assuming the handshake deal was even real, Kroc would not have been able to renege on it. Hence why he had to buy them out to avoid a perpetual royalty deal
The construction of freeways was a major element in this and many fast food stories. I recommend the book Fast Food Nation. It explains the real reason for the brothers and many others' success.

I'm kind of surprised of all the comment here defending Ray Kroc. I'm not a huge fan because I heard about the true story decades ago and made up my own mind. The part of the movie that struck home with me (and struck home "live" back in the day), is Ray's brilliant yet harmful push for ultra-automation and preservative-laden food substitution. The McDonald's brothers insisted on the highest quality food... "clean[er]" food, if you will. It's true that Kroc purposefully pushed the envelope with dishonesty in his dealings with the brothers, and this was especially true with the food itself. Had McDonald's remained committed to the brothers' original concept of the restaurant, perhaps the entire industry wouldn't have "injured" our world as badly as they actually have.
The McDonalds brothers SOLD their interest for a couple of million each (like worth 10 mil today) they did just fine and they never wanted to be a part of a large franchising operation anyways…the movie is factually incorrect on so many levels it’s ridiculous…Ray NEVER STOPPED SELLING MIXERS…he wanted to grow the McDonalds franchise to sell more mixers (initially) …truth is the McDonald brothers wanted to retire and very much liked the idea of selling to Ray …Ray even offered to give them part of the reality division but they declined because of tax reasons…there only parting request was that the McDonalds name not be changed (yes Ray wasn’t the advocate for keeping the name, all he cared about was the logistics behind the company) they took a very generous buy out and priced to where they wouldn’t sacrifice what they wanted in taxes…😊most of what’s depicted is very exaggerated at best or a complete Hollywood fabrication
But it said in the movie at the end that Ray didn't give them the 1.2 million each. He screwed them over and they went out of business because Ray put a McDonald's across the street
Kroc going to the franchisee and complaining about the quality of the experience is exactly what is wrong with going franchise. One restaurant can be super perfect and then the one a few blocks down the road will absolutely suck. That one experience can make someone swear off the entire franchise all together. Kudos to him for at least trying to keep it the same experience across the board. As big as McDonalds is now that is an impossible feat.
In real life they were happy with the deal. A million dollars back then is a lot of money. The movie makes the situation more adversarial because that's more entertaining and I'm glad they did. A lot of films that are truer to life are incredibly bland.
Ray Kroc was obsessed with becoming rich. So much so that he found every loophole to make that happen because he wanted it all! I am certain that greedy businessmen all over the world will see him as a hero and a smart businessman. The interesting part is that the businessmen that I know of... don't have any friends. Even their own families don't have much to do with them. Everything with them is all show. The reality is that they are hollow inside. Successful business may make you rich financially, but it leaves your morally bankrupt if your obsession is greed! I prefer being with people who give back and appreciate, not because they need to, but because they want to! Someone like Taylor Swift as opposed to Donald Trump.
Ray Kroc invested himself totally in the business including mortgaging his own home but every time he asked for help the McDonald's brothers said no. They deserved exactly what they got.
Too many simps here drinking the kool aid and the clickbait. A deal is a deal and jt was a great deal. He took a risk, it’s about risk vs reward. If Mcdonalds failed none of you would be commenting like this. If Mcdonalds ended up failing should he be reimbursed by the brothers? No

@@nationalsocialism3504 ok. thanks
It would have been nice if both brothers did that and then thanked Kroc down the line with a little sarcasm haha
Interesting story though
No one really knows all the details about who took advantage of who I’m guessing.
Even though Ray Kroc was scummy with the brothers, he made the franchise worldwide successful

Second Kroc agreed to give them a 1% royalty in perpetuity, but Kroc being the piece of garbage that he was screwed them on this amd it was a handshake deal so nothing could be done.

A good business man doing good business. I don't see the problem.
the title here is incredibly biased, Ray Kroc made McDonalds what it is today.

The handshake deal story is highly disputed by some of the McDonalds family.
Dick McDonald? I am so sorry that caught me off guard😂😂😂😂
Put this in perspective from Australia, in 1971 first Mcdonalds opened in sydney
In 1971 a decent house cost $40,000 AUD
in 1971 , $1,000,000 USD was equivalent to $1,600,000 AUD
IMAGINE being handed the equivalent payout of (40* suburban houses) and NEVER having to work again
The original brothers were INNOVATORS who got well compensated

He built the business almost completely.
"The refrigeration cost of storing ice cream is eating his profit margin"
That explains it.
The crazy part is a key to what he wanted involved taking their real name and then turn around and prevent them from using it.
To be fair Ray did pretty much all of the work, while the mcdonalds brothers were properly compensated for their founding work.

He screwed them over and they went out of business because Ray put a McDonald's across the street
batman paid them 2.7 million in 1961 which is about 28.5 million today

Kroc going to the franchisee and complaining about the quality of the experience is exactly what is wrong with going franchise. One restaurant can be super perfect and then the one a few blocks down the road will absolutely suck. That one experience can make someone swear off the entire franchise all together. Kudos to him for at least trying to keep it the same experience across the board. As big as McDonalds is now that is an impossible feat.
