  • There is no question that the McDonald's fast-food restaurant chain is the largest in the world, and Richard "Dick" McDonald, along with his brother Maurice, started it all. Enjoy a rare interview with Dick as well as a treasure trove of information, photos, and footage depicting the development of the McDonald's chain and the fast food industry that still dominates our eating habits today.

      No... That's the wrong lesson, the right lesson is protect your IP and give your partners something to fight for, something to lose and do what ever you can so that they can succeed....their success will always be your success...
      Where they failed according to the movie is they force Ray in a corner where he had no choice but to kick them out to grow. They were too strict and didn't care he was breaking even. They care only about quality even at their own expense of not making much profit. In business of you don't scale you retract and the McDonald's stop scaling! That's why they need strangers...

    So glad these guys are getting their due as Founders. The Founder film really left an impact on me and it's good to know that the Brothers are more well recognized for their ingenuity, I'm not taking away the fact that Kroc was a big factor in the massive success globally but he should have given the brothers their credit far more than they got in their lifetime.

      So was Ray Kroc not supposed to?
      Keep in mind that San Bernardino had a loyal McDonald's customer base...should they not have set up shop there? Dick and Mac had decided to start a new company (after they reneged on giving the physical location to Kroc after selling the McDonald's name... something they hadn't even trademarked up until that point), so they were essentially competition. Keep in mind, the brothers did *zero* work in franchising and had stated their goal to retire, so it would have been crazy for Kroc to just give up San Bernardino entirely.

  • @vocals7693
    @vocals7693 2 года назад +141

    The McDonald's brothers had the innovation of how to make a single location work above all others at the time, but lacked vision of how to successfully to turn that innovation into an empire. One thing about them was quality of the food came first. Unfortunately with size, quality suffers (cutting corners) and they knew that. You can bet the original McDonald's food back in the 50's was a thousand times better than the crap McDonald's serves today.

    The white Ford convertible at the filling station with a guy cleaning the windshield is actually not in the USA but in Sweden. It says kr, öre and bensin on the pumps, the car registration B is for STOCKHOLM but I guess it’s a tourist because the sign on the bus says Östersund and that’s about 700 km up north from STOCKHOLM. Ford used to have a big assembly plant for trucks and cars in STOCKHOLM. Every car came individually in a big wooden crate and was assembled in the factory, that created jobs in Sweden and gave Ford lower custom fees and tariffs. The crates was then sold to people to be used as building materials for garages and summer houses.

    • @doddsino
      @doddsino 7 месяцев назад

      How did they make a mistake by working with him? Their only goal by starting McDonald's was that explicit goal to become millionaires by the age they were 50.
      Not only did they not achieve that by their 50th birthday, they weren't even close. Ray Kroc eventually paid their 1.3 million dollars of money that he did not have.
      Had Ray Kroc not come along, McDonald's would have continued to be a single prosperous location in San Bernardino, before some other burger conglomerate (I would wager it to be Hardee's) decided to nationalize and start buying up local burger businesses. And I assure you, they weren't going to get anything close to a million dollars at that time.

    The McDonald’s brothers were stupid to sell their controlling rights to McDonald’s to Ray Kroc. Think it was $2 million and some change, equivalent to around $20M today but they would’ve made that a hundred times over. It wasn't right across the street (that was a little added drama in the movie, which was otherwise pretty accurate). Kroc on the other hand wanted a uniform business that only bought the same materials from the company. He also was insistent on getting the fries right, something that he goes over in explicit detail in his book.
      I guess it's not my place to say if the quality went down since I wasn't alive in San Bernardino in 1961. Exceptional video! We just watched the Founder for the first time and it helped clarify several questions we had. Thank you for putting this together!! 👍🏻👍🏻

    Wow...I know movies like to disregard the truth, but it seems that The Founder was full of grade-A bs. As I write this, there are two other videos on how the brothers were "scammed", but it seems like everyone made out pretty good.

    I mean I get it and tbh I was mad at Roy when I seen the movie to. But if you think about it he wasn’t making nothing out of that contract.. and who was to say that they weren’t dicking him? so he probably felt played. They should’ve did a lot of things differently and watched him more. But I know it’s human nature most of the times that if you feel that someone played you or is playing you, aren’t you gonna play them back and even more efficiently? Should be a lesson learned if anything

      They actually pulled their restaurant out of the deal after they had closed. This meant that Kroc had to purchase another plot of land in San Bernardino for a new McDonald's. It wasn't across the street as the movie shows though.

    I can still hear the New England accent in Dick's voice. Even Southern California couldn't take that away!

    The Brothers were the founders of McDonald's, but without Kroc the company wouldn't be what it is today. And 'The Founder' shows why the Brothers couldn't have handled a business the size it became under Kroc. They hadn't the brutality and toughness this ultra capitalism needs. Everybody can decide if this is the right way, regarding that Kroc got the bigger acknowledgment for his work franchising the idea of others.

      One of Dick’s post McDonalds proposed ventures was a chain of motels across America called “ A Wee Bit of Scotland”.. It never materialized but it speaks to what you just mentioned, GioTio123- Ampopfilms
