CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) and her husband (Giovanni Ribisi) run into airheaded Hollywood actress Kelly (Anna Faris).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
After making a striking directorial debut with her screen adaptation of The Virgin Suicides, Sofia Coppola offers a story of love and friendship blooming under unlikely circumstances in this comedy drama. Bob Harris (Bill Murray) is a well-known American actor whose career has gone into a tailspin; needing work, he takes a very large fee to appear in a commercial for Japanese whiskey to be shot in Tokyo. Feeling no small degree of culture shock in Japan, Bob spends most of his non-working hours at his hotel, where he meets Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) at the bar. Twentysomething Charlotte is married to John (Giovanni Ribisi), a successful photographer who is in Tokyo on an assignment, leaving her to while away her time while he works. Beyond their shared bemusement and confusion with the sights and sounds of contemporary Tokyo, Bob and Charlotte share a similar dissatisfaction with their lives; the spark has gone out of Bob's marriage, and he's become disillusioned with his career. Meanwhile, Charlotte is puzzled with how much John has changed in their two years of marriage, while she's been unable to launch a creative career of her own. Bob and Charlotte become fast friends, and as they explore Tokyo, they begin to wonder if their sudden friendship might be growing into something more.

Anna Faris nails Cameron Diaz's personality to the point of uncanniness, and Scarlett really nails Sofia's facial expressions and attitude.
Love Charlotte's face/expression the entire time.
I know it's so obvious how much she hates them both.
Hah she doesn't hate them, she just obviously thinks the chick is an airhead/idiot.
I mean like, in the moment. The way she looks at her husband too.
She's an unhappy person who only wants call attention
So kawaii...John is her husband forever
spike jonze, sofia coppola and cameron diaz having a friendly conversation
Spike Jonze dated Cameron Diaz--- LOL, this is so bad. Cameron is also rumored to have bad BO.
YIKES!!!!
She also included Justin Timberlake in a later scene
@@thethirdlife8695 I am trying to find that scene. I laugh when the Timberlake character is going on and on about something that doesn't interest Johannson. He then asks "you know what I mean?" She responds so dryly "...No.."
Lol
I adore Anna Faris but I feel she has so much potential and is soo underrated
Based on Sofia Coppola's disdain for Cameron diaz and valley girl's in general.
+dasadist22 Except Anna is 100x more likable than Cameron.
Movie is called Lost in Translation but is actually Great Translation of Sofia's life?
Because Cameron had an acting career, unlike Sofia "Failed Actress" Coppola.
@@meekmeads I wouldn't call what Cameron does acting. It's something else but not that
@@thsu8 Not anymore, imo.
This shows how talented Anna Faris really is. Will somebody please cast her in something other than "Scary Movie, Part X"...
prog4evr she was also absolutely terrific in Brokeback Mountain.
She is awesome
You got your wish! She's in everything! Friends, Mom, lots of movies!
such a well-acted scene by all three. and i love how Scarlett looks at Anna up and down, but when she looks at her husband, she only needs to look at his face. it tells the story. well done.
not really, that is in my eyes completely unnecessary overacting
@@peloquin5652 Actually it is a scene in which Coppola displays a meeting with Cameron Diaz who was friends with her exhusband Spike Jonze. If you know who gets displayed it is not anymore overacting :D
@@365tage7 I understand where you're coming from ;-) but I actually meant Giovanni Ribisi who also has a history of really bad overavting. maybe it's because I never liked him as an actor but Lost in Translation is a great movie in general, also because of Bill and Scarlet.
Good God. I saw this movie and I was like 22 and I realted so much to Scarlett Johansson's character... now I'm 35 and watching these scenes are realizing that I STILL relate to her character. I'm slightly happy and slightly depressed about that.
Claire B I’m 22 as well, and I definitely relate to the character.
Don't worry, it's going to be okay. Have you been to Japan since?
same here but like 15 and now 29
Hmm.. looks like I came here on a zeitgeist. 29 here and feel the same. Man... life is temporarily pretty.
i am 18 and i completly relate to her character….
LOL this is def about cameron diaz. not that it's bad. cameron has this bubbly persona and anna nailed it.
It’s quite obviously supposed to be seen as bad. haha
was that BO thing a dig? remember Diaz doesn't wear deodorant like a Matthew McConaughey thing.
John says "yeah" 32 times in this scene.
Thanks to Sofia Coppola... Now we all know what a Cameron Diaz/Spike Jonze conversation looks like..
Ugh, I've been in situations like this.
My god, how did you survive?
Today I tried to explain to my boyfriend as to why I didn't like a certain girl. And how I don't like him either, when he's laughing at her dumb jokes. He didn't understand until I brought this scene up, and said that Scarlett's me, he's Giovanni, and she is Anna Faris. It clicked immediately. So thank you, Sofia Coppola.
Yeah but Evelyn Waugh had a wife who was also called Evelyn so who is the dummy really??!!
Scarlett came across snobby and boring and the other came across kind and exiting. I think you should want to switch tbh.
@@bertet9928 Oh wow, if you say so! I will do a 180 personality change today, because your opinion is the gospel truth and it matters the world to me~
Men will like me more now, yay
@@bertet9928Nah, one represents the shallow, superficial extrovert most Americans like, and the other is deep and thoughtful. IRL one is destined to be in a thousand relationships, the other one would be an amazing wife to spend a lifetime with.
@@erstwhile6163 Yes his first wife was indeed Evelyn, but not Evelyn Waugh. So you I guess.
This my children, is how relationships and marriages are, 24/7, no matter what you say.
elaborate
I totally agree with you 100%
Giovanni ribisi is severely underrated .
Amazing scene .
Everything that has ever happened is underrated
I even heard a rumor that Coppola´s exhusband had an affair with Diaz which may have led to this
Anna Faris was perfect in that role.
All three, great acting
The look and her face when he says, "not everyone went to Yale." She is crushed. Sad...
But then, why did she marry him?
@@Mario_N64 And their marriage was betrayed as so happy. So maybe she regrets it.
@@decoeric She probably was impressed because he was a big shot photographer. She's not as "deep" as she thinks.
went to yale to study philospophy lol
Hahaha, that has got to be based on ditzy Cameron Diaz. Blind Gossip brought me here to verify. ;)
Same reason I'm here! I've never seen the movie, but there's no way this isn't an Diaz send-up. Faris did a great job lol
I heard the same thing. I kind of enjoyed the film less after finding that out, especially when I heard Ribisi's character was based off her ex-husband. Felt like Sofia Coppola had an axe to grind.
Scarlett was never as good since. She's amazing in this at 18.
18?!! omg how she can look so good at 18
17
the last movie that I've seen with her in it.
One of the few scenes Scarlett is actually wearing pants
and the 'action movie' I think is Charlie's Angels, right?
The real and the artificial woman portrayed by two great actresses.
It seems like there’s more artificial women and men in the world. I avoid them both.
anna farris' character is based on cameron diaz which makes this so much funnier
And Scarlett's is based on Sofia which is embarrassing for the director because how are you going to be condescending about someone who earned their success vs. someone who was handed it based on who their parents are.
Remember loving this movie when I was a teenager and it had just come out. But watching it now, I have such a different perspective especially knowing the backstory with regard to Cameron Diaz. Cameron was lighthearted but worked for her career, it wasn't delivered to her on a platter because of who her father was. If your options in life are to either be joyful or to be smug and condescending...I know what I'm picking.
Also, there is so much judgement about him liking someone who is fun. Meanwhile she's so young and she's chasing attention from an old alcoholic? Weird.
It's not that she's FUN; it's that she's FAKE.
This is a pretty good point!
Well, you’re judging her for chasing the old alcoholic. You’re no different.
also the way that sofia coppola portrays japanese citizens is kinda... bad... and the movie never clarifies if that image is the character's perception or the director's perception
@@felipperama3433 You mustn't have been to Japan. I've lived there - the portrayal is very accurate.
I love this scene. One of my favorites. It’s very telling.
any supporting character you wanna follow when they leave the screen is a well written and acted role
how many times can you say yeah in one conversation?
32 apparently
Lol
come on.cameron diaz just have this bubbly personality..in this period of time she's dating jared leto..coppola took it personally..
1:51
This movie predicted the plot of Pixar's Soul 17 years before it came out
Woah, great observation
It was one of coolest enjoyable movies in my forties. I was watching in London in private cinema with only 5-6 people - relaxed and comfortable. I felt so happy to have seen this movie in early 2004, and soon after I was preparing for my trip to San Francisco and visiting the redwoods of Northern California on a 4 week trip. It changed my life and ever since that time I have committed myself to return to the redwoods and build a retreat and my last home in this planet 🌎- although delayed by this false pandemic, it will happen soon and can fulfil my service and life purpose.
Thanks lost in translation!!!
Right on brother
this scene is always funny, because I heard....that the ditzy actress is supposed to represent Cameron Diaz., which is believable. And is there anything more annoying than a boyfriend/spouse doing that 'pretend thing' when you run into someone like that!!!!
literally 90% of every art undergrads conversation with other artists: "DO YOU WANNA MEET UP LATER AT-- OH SORRY HAD TO CANCEL, DO YOU WANNA MEET LATER AT -- OH SORRY HAD TO CANCEL"

Anna Faris is a national treasure
How come there isn't a single comment about the fact that it's Phoebe's brother Frank here with Monica & Chandler's surrogate Erica ;)
Fukawaka! 👍
This happens in real life. Scarlet is Sofia Coppola, Giovanni Ribisi is Spike Jonze and Anna Faris is Cameron Diaz.
Unpopular opinion but I'd be on "Cameron's" side. We're all a bit flaky sometimes and present to people how we would like them to perceive us but at least she was being friendly and affable. The dismissive, disdainful women who are surveying everyone from their kingdom of "cool and deep" are as deluded as they are unpleasant to be around, and for women like the ultra-priveleged Sofia Coppola, it's as much a constructed character as the one she's mocking Diaz for here.
Lol, sounds like projection... She wasn't at all dismissive and disdainful, and she stated a fact.
Idk, Cameron Diaz has a history of not being nice.
@@essies4294 Are you a psychologist? It’s obvious she’s being disdainful and patronising about the actress here, who everybody knows represents Cameron Diaz.
@@106andie Never heard that. Comes across as nice.
@@essies4294 She may as well have said "Evelyn Waugh? Evelyn Waugh was an author." Yeah, a fact. Facts are just swell, aren't they.
I think this is the moment that either gets you on Coppola's side or sets an insufferable tone that lasts the runtime.
Maybe this is a conversation between sofia coppola, spike jonze and michelle williams...
I still think its Michele Williams because they started dating after Jonze and Coppola split up. Cameron Diaz and Jonze romance is pure speculation and I think Sofia denies the scene being about Cameron Diaz and Jonze because its not actually Diaz... its actually Williams.
*****
Sorry. I think its Michele Williams.
"character looks nothing like Michelle Williams" (true. It looks like Ana Faris doing 'standard blond' to me, but maybe its Cameron Diaz for you)
"Sophia Coppola publicly comments on the resemblance between Diaz and this character" (prove it).
The only interview explicit quoting Diaz was this one in which she neither denies nor affirm anything:
www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2013/09/12/sofia-coppola-discusses-lost-in-translation-on-its-10th-anniversary.html
Quoting Coppola:
"I could probably name eight people that she was based on, just that bubbly, extroverted blonde that you see on talk shows."
One of this eight could be Michelle Williams and also Bill Cosby (Which I doubt).
There is absolutely no point in discussing this because its mere speculation. The movie just doesn't sustain any of these version we discussed and its a piece of fiction.
We have different opinions. No need to be aggressive.
Gyancarlo Francischeto Well, judging by the mannerisms of that actress, there is definitly some resemblance to Cameron Diaz in my opinion.
I really like Giovanni Ribisi, such a great actor, to the extreme he´s a douche bag in this movie, lol
he is one of the more underrated actors for sure
RL R he was awesome in Saving Private Ryan
I love Anna faris
"...promoting that action movie I did YAAAH!!!!"
Sofia's looks of disdain at Cameron.
If she had said she was registered under George Sands, she would have gained Sofia's respect.
Good one!
I quite like Anna Faris. Her acting range is very limited but I think she's fun to watch. The contrast between her and Scarlett is really jarring and funny here.
Fun drinking game:
Take a shot everytime John says 'yeah', you'll probably die tho he says yeah like a hundred times
"Yeah yeah oh oh yeah yeah oh"
Anna Faris being Anna Faris.
Evelyn Waugh was a man who married a woman named Evelyn Gardner so she became...Mrs Evelyn Waugh.
They were known as He-Evelyn and She-Evelyn.
She-velyn.
Anna Faris rocks.
After a second reading of the scene, I totally agree with your point
She has no idea what Fukuoka is, but she says it's amazing. I love this part. Sofia's "fu" to Americans, maybe?
Not the whole America. Just Cameron Diaz.
I think Evelyn Waugh would be a witty pseudonym for a woman, even though the character wasn't portrayed as if she'd be remotely aware of why that is.
Giovanni Ribisi is another actor who can play range of characters, the medic in Saving Private Ryan, a washed up drunk alcoholic in The Rum Diaries.
Why did she marry him in the first place if she thinks low of him?
Exactly.
I learned about Evelyn Waugh from this scene. IMDB says in the goofs that he called her Anna in this scene but I can't tell, maybe it was edited out?
cause she nails it!!!
I learnt more reading the comments. But I will agree with one thing...it's true, not everyone went to Yale so don't be condescending just cause some bimbo acts like some bimbo to your husband. Don't they teach that in Yale.
Well yeah, he told her to lighten up.
What are you doing here?
John: uh well- you know I’m just here
Awesome movie and love the soundtrack!
Is anyone mildly amused by the fact that Charlotte's husband went on to play the creepy dad in the movie Ted?.......xD
Anna was so beautiful and natural here. Why oh why did she ever mess with her face with injections?
So this is where she changed into the Black Widow !
lol Scarlett's acting is so over the top
Really? I thought the exact opposite. Understated but nailing the sentiment with her face
Scarlett and Giovanni met Britney :P
I love Anna Faris!
Black Widow is not pleased.
@pushelildaisies She reacts to show her isolation amongst all of these shallow people. Johansson's subtle acting was perfect.
she makes me feel very sick
I wish Anna Faris was the main character instead of ScaJo.
yeah the perspective of the film is flawed and dumb in a lot of ways.
The most unrealistic part of this brilliant movie was believing he somehow got Charlotte to marry him...
Well, in real life Sofia did marry Spike. So...
Well, in real life Sofia did marry Spike. So...
I think the most unrealistic part is believing she was a philosophy major at Yale
Why is Scarlet character giving her the stink eye?
Because her character is insecure, judgmental and miserable.
He totally had affair with her
Lizzy Tan I didn’t get that at all. Wow. Talk about jumping to conclusions. His behavior doesn’t even line up with him having had an affair with her.
@@FreshSpecimens it’s not far-fetched. I wondered the same thing
I obviously hate his character in this but why is Ribisi not in more stuff? He's an amazing actor and just...obnoxiously attractive. Hell
Scarlett's character is disdainful of her husband patronizing and engaging in conversation with Farris's character in this scene as she doesn't like her much.
Poor Scarlett
hey those two were pretty important guests in friends. nice~
0:58 is what you came for 😂
0:42 hellooo!!!
Giovanni Ribisi Played Charlotte's husband John.
my souls purpose is to be deeply alone forever until it kills me
Now I know what Evelyn Waugh and Marilyn Manson have in common.
I'm here promoting that action movie I did! (Kick to balls)!!!
It's funny like in this case, John and the girl would be considered the ''normal people'' and Johansson would be considered the antissocial introvert who should change. Yeah, how about that?
Kelly such pretty
I watched this film in theater and I have no memory of this scene. I had not known that Anna Faris was in this. And even in her short appearance in this film, her dialogues were some of the most wonderfully awkward ones.
Great movie
Oh those legs..
Poor Charlotte!! It's sort of weird because she has been married for two years and if you went by the actress age at the time of shooting that means she got married at 16
No, but Scarlett Johansson was only 18 years old in real life at the time this was filmed. If it was real and she had two years of marriage under her belt, she would have been 16 years old at the time she was married. That's if we're going off of her actual age.
She played 22-23 year old college graduate in Lost in Translation
Tina Privitera And we would be going off of her real age because...???
This scene is tendentious. Coppola makes the husband and the actress characters extremely (and therefore, unlikely) shallow and stupid, so charlotte (who, as everyone knows, is her alter-ego character) would look less conceited herself. It's a "I'm so deep, and no one understands me" kind of thing. Annoying.
Agreed, she comes across as feeling ignored while she acts sulky and makes no effort to take part in the conversation.
I agree. Not only that but this really illustrates how childish and insecure Coppola is.
You nailed it. Thank you!!
No. I justcthink most wives would react like that, in this situation, kind of trying to belittle a perceived rival.
@@valeria-militiamessalina5672 If most women would belittle someone who has done nothing wrong because of their own insecurities, that is very unfortunate. I’m not sure if you are right or wrong but I hope that isn’t true.
No place for Scary Movie in this film. But it happened.
I would leave Charlotte for Kelly PERIOD
There are only two kinds of blonde American women in this world...
This blondie girl is Avril Lavigne
No
+Enrique Paredes Nope, the ditzy blonde is based on Cameron Diaz and role played by Anna Faris - who nailed it!
love
The ditzy one kinda looks like Britney Spears-ish
She looks las if she's pregnant at 2:00
this scene just made me dislike charlotte even more. nothing's more annoying than when someone looks down on others. the way she looks her up and down is so catty. she's just making an ass of herself, even if that actress is sort of irritation
phantomwaltz You're right. I have been in the same place as Charlotte when I was around 23. I was with this guy and we didn't have much in common. I was lost like her, I couldn't figure out who I was and I relate to this scene very much cause It happened multiple times when I was with my ex. I acted catty like Charlotte and couldn't stand my boyfriend and his female friends. Now it has been 5 years and I understand I didn't feel loved by him and that's why I was insufferable :)
Agreed.
