After making a striking directorial debut with her screen adaptation of The Virgin Suicides, Sofia Coppola offers a story of love and friendship blooming under unlikely circumstances in this comedy drama. Bob Harris (Bill Murray) is a well-known American actor whose career has gone into a tailspin; needing work, he takes a very large fee to appear in a commercial for Japanese whiskey to be shot in Tokyo. Feeling no small degree of culture shock in Japan, Bob spends most of his non-working hours at his hotel, where he meets Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) at the bar. Twentysomething Charlotte is married to John (Giovanni Ribisi), a successful photographer who is in Tokyo on an assignment, leaving her to while away her time while he works. Beyond their shared bemusement and confusion with the sights and sounds of contemporary Tokyo, Bob and Charlotte share a similar dissatisfaction with their lives; the spark has gone out of Bob's marriage, and he's become disillusioned with his career. Meanwhile, Charlotte is puzzled with how much John has changed in their two years of marriage, while she's been unable to launch a creative career of her own. Bob and Charlotte become fast friends, and as they explore Tokyo, they begin to wonder if their sudden friendship might be growing into something more.

I just watched this movie alone here in my dorm room in Copenhagen and now I'm torn between all these emotions I'm getting. I think that if you've ever experienced true love in one way or another, this movie will affect you deeply, if you give it the attention it deserves. Also, I like how the Japanese photographer and the director ask for 'tension' in the scenes in the movie as I think the movie is best described as being extremely tense. I hoped they could stay together in the end but now all I can do is contemplate what he whispered in her ear.

I love how natural this movie is. When Bob and Charlotte first meet, it isn't love at first sight. There is no instant and snappy dialogue. Rather, it is a somewhat awkward conversation between two strangers but you can feel the underlying spark of chemistry. So well done.

This film is great when you've traveled abroad by yourself and meet people along the way. It's always enjoyable, and at the same time not because you know you will never see them or interact again.

as Bill said about losing the Oscar -- I'll have this movie, he can keep his Oscar. I mean, seriously, is anybody going back and watching Mystic River right now? Over and Over? No.
Mystic River is a great film, and a great story... but... this is a story that gets inside you and makes you feel their feelings, and it becomes part of you. At least that's how I feel about it. So, totally YES to your comment.

my fight is the fight for all the comic actors slighted over the years. Case can be certainly made for Scar-Jo. Just not what I was saving my bullets for.
When she innocently said she wished she could sleep...I think she realized as she said it out loud, that it sounded a little forward...then when he wished the same thing, she realized he meant it innocently as well...not as a creepy come-on to hit on her. That's when she knew she was safe, and she could let her guard down with him.
What I love about this scene is that the characters don't introduce themselves to one another, nor do they ever. That's the culture of travel that I love so much. You can bump into anyone you meet and, over the course of a few days, experience such intense, intimate conversations that you can't even have with your closest friends and family. And then once these few days are up you say goodbye and never see each other again.
This movie keeps getting better and better every time I get back to it.

+Justin Riley I'm like this , in real life. Because that's the meaning of flirting, this is not a bloody job interview. Nonetheless many women (i say women since i'm a guy) are interested about names, adresses, jobs, the whole fuckin' CV. This kills the magic. It's not that i have something to hide, but what difference does my name make ? And no it's not weird, it's ...the opposite of boring. Many many people unfortunately don't really know how to flirt, pardon me if i sound cocky but that's the situation.

This is exact why I loved this scene realistically I feel like people just start talking in situations like this, they don't really care to introduce themselves

My wife passed last year, but we had the opportunity to go to this very restaurant. I always think of that magical moment with her. It was surreal and fantastic.

Being a 53 y/o in a 30 year marriage, who travels 5-6 times a year internationally, I can say this is the best film ever made.
Traveling alone, especially internationally, is a transcendent experience. I get to be truly alone and with myself, which is impossible at home. After the jet lag wears off, in 2 or 3 days, the experience begins to reveal things to you that never appear at home. Like how you really feel about your life, your family, your job. Home begins to feel like a bubble, another world, another life, another universe. I just don't think this is possible without being on another continent, 10-16 flight hours away from the cognitive nest of my life.
I don't know how anyone could imagine 20 years ago what the last 20 years of travel experience in my life have been like, so I must conclude I'm just as human as everyone else and not special. This makes it better in this way: I'm not alone. Now that I'm 53 and this movie has once again come back to me, it's even more real now. My life just runs on, I have no choice. And I wish I could sleep.

It's nostalgic because its 2004 and neither of them are just sitting their on their phones not talking to anyone.
She was 19 and he was 53 at that time and just pay attention to the chemistry between these two...AMAZING. The acting here is so incredible. One of those movies that show that you don't need special effects to create an awesome film.

What IS it about this story? There's nothing much happening. No "saving the world" or country. Just two ordinary people talking, yet it's fascinating. You want to hear more. I love this movie.
You make a good point and I think that's true for My Dinner With Andre in a similar way. No plot, just two people talking, but somehow it's meaningful and gripping.

What hits me, is that this film is so personal and so bare is that it makes you really feel like you are in the shoes of the main characters. If gives you this fleeting feeling of being alone in a strange place with a new friend who becomes your anchor and who temporarily becomes the center of your galaxy even thought you know it is temporary. It is such a strange feeling to try to encapsulate in a film but it succeeds spectacularly. That is why to me, there is no other film that even occupies the same space let alone tops it.

Francis Ford Coppola stumbled across the genesis of a masterpiece when he found The Godfather.
His daughter did the same when she ventured to Tokyo. Except hers came from virtually nothing and was about, seemingly, very little, yet she managed to turn hers into a masterpiece also. With the help of superb casting. Can't imagine any other two nailing those roles like those two.
They're up there with Bogie and Bacall.

This film is in the top 20 ever. Everything about it is so subtle and beautiful, so much to look for if you are a film buff. Just perfect.
I've seen this movie at least 6 times.
I finally only get the true brilliance of the final line in this scene. Bill doesn't want to sleep to just sleep. He wants to sleep to get through his marriage more quickly and get it over with, Damn this movie's too good.
I've seen it at least 10 times, no joke, it's so watchable, less than 2h, and a great companion piece to a late night whisky! Suntory of course

This was such a chill movie.
Trivia time: All the bar scenes were shot overnight as the hotel would only allow them to film after 1am.
Some locations were used without film permits such as the subway scene. To avoid attraction Sophia used a small crew and no artificial lighting.
Absolutely love this film. I can’t quite put my finger on the exact feeling that it gives me. But either way, it’s a good feeling.

First time watching thsi film has me feeling all sorts of things. Finding love too late in life, unfullfillment, wishing you could be older or younger. Or just in a different time. I doubt this film will leave my memory for a while.

I first saw the film when I was 14 or 15, and it definitely made me think about what my life would be like when I was older. The movie had a certain indescribable feeling around it than I haven't seen in others.
I adore their chemistry in this scene. Wish I could be as charismatic as Bill Murray.
When he politely offers her a light for her cigarette and she gently touches his hand. I’m sure true fans of this film picked up on that subtlety and felt the sensuality.
I love how she doesn't go for the whisky he suggests, or for his "kanpai", it gives such an eerie air to the scene... an intimate independence.

lost in translation is in my top 3 favorite movies , i remember being really bored and started looking for movies to watch . Never heard of the movie before and was to watch something else , thank god i didn't . Everything about it totally blew my mind and couldn't stop thinking about it for a few weeks .
The subtle maybe unconscious body language is just genius done here. Charlotte is fumbling around with her cigarettes and Bob notices that and starts to take out his lighter then she notices it slightly and finally takes out one, she knew what that meant.
I just watched this movie for the first time. I really loved all the little bits of comedy, that sort of small playful amusing stuff gets me. By the end I was absolutely balling my eyes out, it’s a very touching film and I’m incredibly found of it. If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s worth the watch

She turned 18 a month after the wrap of the shoot, but yes, during the entire filming she was still only 17.

Keep going, especially Schopenhauer (which is one of my favourites amongst many) is a delight in german, no matter how good accurate translators are there's always something getting "LOST IN TRANSLATION" ;-D

this is such a great scene between the two of them. I love when she glances at him after she tells him that she wishes she could sleep... I pause it here and she looks so lovely for a brief second.

This movie perfectly expressed the subtle loneliness of being alone in foreign countries. I spent a month in Japan and it was a quirky mix of familiar western products, and unfamiliar eastern culture. I met a lot of people and didn't get to know anyone except other foreigners in the hotel bars.
This scene hits close to home. LOL
This is one of my top 3 favorite movies of all time.

I watched this last night for the first time. Such a great film.
Phenomenal movie! Very well made! I lived in Japan for three years some time ago and watching this movie brought back a parade of emotions. The various bumps and collisions with culture shock that Bob (Murray) encounters and the depiction of Japan are spot on with my experience. Another good movie with the same "American guy crash lands in Japan" theme is "Mr. Baseball" with Tom Selleck.

I feel sad that Scarlett Johansson stopping playing roles like this one. This is where her true talent shines.
Right? Actors think that everyone wants to see them in super hero movies, but roles like this have so much more substance and longevity.

An incredibly cathartic film that sweeps you away. Wonderful.
The soundtrack is stellar, as well. 'Sometimes' is like a glowing, warm summer sunset across a neon city.

What many don't know is that Scarlett was 17 when she made this movie. She goes toe-to-toe with Bill Murray for two hours and never does she appear over her head. Yes, I think she's a beautiful women, but the girl has some serious acting chops. More impressive considering this movie is two characters and that's it.
