CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) asks Bob (Bill Murray) for advice on life and marriage and he is brutally honest.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
After making a striking directorial debut with her screen adaptation of The Virgin Suicides, Sofia Coppola offers a story of love and friendship blooming under unlikely circumstances in this comedy drama. Bob Harris (Bill Murray) is a well-known American actor whose career has gone into a tailspin; needing work, he takes a very large fee to appear in a commercial for Japanese whiskey to be shot in Tokyo. Feeling no small degree of culture shock in Japan, Bob spends most of his non-working hours at his hotel, where he meets Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) at the bar. Twentysomething Charlotte is married to John (Giovanni Ribisi), a successful photographer who is in Tokyo on an assignment, leaving her to while away her time while he works. Beyond their shared bemusement and confusion with the sights and sounds of contemporary Tokyo, Bob and Charlotte share a similar dissatisfaction with their lives; the spark has gone out of Bob's marriage, and he's become disillusioned with his career. Meanwhile, Charlotte is puzzled with how much John has changed in their two years of marriage, while she's been unable to launch a creative career of her own. Bob and Charlotte become fast friends, and as they explore Tokyo, they begin to wonder if their sudden friendship might be growing into something more.

it's kinda weird hearing the regular clip after hearing it from eden cause of the heavy filter, which makes it sound so much more romantic
it really sounds like a 50s movie after EDEN's filter
ya for me it sounded like phone call :) but i love how he used this clip
I think EDEN re did this entirely.
Edit: Not sure
He didn't use the audio from the movie at all. There are many times when it is obvious. For one, there's one second where she breathes in and in Eden's she breathes out, also adding a "but".
Ryan Parker ok well you know what I'm trying to say
This movie was so real, any typical romantic comedy type movie would have had them ditch their marriages at the end to be together, but this movie was much deeper than that. It wasn't looking to a fairy-tale ending, it was looking to tell a story of two people being lost in the world and in their minds, and only finding some peace by finding each other.
I sometimes think they wanted to tell the marriage will not be perfect, it will hurt you sometimes. But you will go on.
Christian plus there was an age difference of like 30 years between them
Tells a lot too that there's very little fanfic written of the two, meaning the makers of this movie did a fairly good job with the message
Like simple and clean. I know I never find that intimate relationship.
It is similar to Welcome to the Rileys
"The more you know who you are and what you want the less you let things upset you." Great Great quote.
This is my favorite film with Scarlett Johansson because I feels she's the most human in this.
Yes. Finally someone who tells it the way it is.
she looks so beautiful, natural and lovely.
@MyFieryEnd Under The Skin? Her best performance, deserved an Oscar Nomination
I only just found out she was 17 at filming. Madness.
More impressive is that she was only 17 during shooting. Seems far more mature for the role she played.
The part where he touches her foot is the greatest part in this movie. Amazing that something so small like that can be so beautiful.
In GREAT material, a touch on a hand (or a foot) can be more powerful than a kiss in lesser material. X Files fans went nuts everytime Mulder even TOUCHED Scully. Lol! It's lovely and tinged with sexual tension. (And we don't even SEE the foot touch in this clip........awwww).
Genevieve Haley yeah, it was when my man did it, when he touched my injured foot.. and guess what? He still didn't love me more than his ex gf.
+miss x show I'm sure that you know your man better than i do ;-D, but hey if he loves more his ex he would be with her instead of you ;-)
Where is that? I didn't see it
Timing is everything. Somehow he waited the exact amount of time necessary to yank your heart.
When you realize that Scarlett Johansson was just 17 years old when she filmed this, it's truly remarkable how mature and talented she is. She definitely deserved at least an Oscar nom for this one
It really bothers me to this day because she wasn't acknowledge that much for this film. It all seemed like Murray's stellar performance totally eclipsed hers, but she was also phenomenal here.
Usually you have a 26 years old actress playing 17 but here you have the opposite, a 17 year old playing 26 and doing so brilliantly.
I’ve watched this a hundred times just to hear a man that sounds like my father say “I’m not worried about you.”
I felt that
Thank You for that comment
😭😭😭
thats...sad. hope you are ok
Gah I love that you wrote this. I never noticed he said it before because I guess it didn't mean anything to me. Now it does and it hit me like a ton of bricks.

"No, yes, it gets easier."
I just love this one, inspirational in a strange way.
"No" because life always holds challenges and miseries
"Yes" because you will get through them somehow and what troubles you right now will seem insignificant as time goes by.
Duality I might just psychoactively but. In all seriousness the duality of it is nice we’re so separate yet connected ebb an flows
Maybe i'm reading too much into the visual language of this scene but i feel like the different ways both "Bob" and "Charlotte" rest their heads on their arms say a lot about their characters. Bob is self-assured and relaxed and thus can rest his head directly on his hand. Charlotte on the other hand is lost and scared and thusly needs a soft pillow between her head and hand for comfort.
Either way, this movie is a masterpiece, in my opinion.
+Krock Love these observations. I feel the same tension shifts in myself.
I think it's also worth noting where they position themselves here... Charlotte is directing her whole attention and body language towards Bob while he is laying with his body faced upward, self assured, not inclining towards the person he's talking to.
+Krock Far from a masterpiece. An ageing man who cannot find someone his own age? WHo relies on getting with someone much younger to feel in control? Yeah what a masterpiece
+Coco Pops he can't find someone his age? He actually sleeps with a singer who is much closer to his age in the movie.
Aside from that, sure, a big age gap can be a bit weird but as long as it's two adults it's not illegal. Also, Bob and Charlotte don't get really close physically aside from one small goodbye kiss. The closeness is much more on the emotional side.
Oh please. Two adults? she is mentally developing and her mind is far from the age that he is! His mind is so different. I can understand a fatherly or grandfatherly man doing this and trying to help her in a daughter way but love? It is far from that! And history psychology science and reality show us that. There are big motives behind these sort of actions. Hollywood is awful

"I'm not worried about you." Bob saying this to Charlotte, specifically using these words, shows how deep their connection is despite only knowing each other for a few days. Really lovely film. Still Sofia's best, imo.
I still love this film. It shows not every male/female relationship has to be sexual. The platonic relationship these two have is the best I've seen in any movie to date.
Absolutely ♥️ it was so refreshing to see a movie about emotional connection that didn’t cross the line. Sofia winning the Oscar for this was so well deserved. It’s such a beautifully written script. The actors both nailed it.
It almost feels as though they were just being their true selves, as if it were an honest unscripted conversation and they were speaking from their own genuine experiences. It feels so sincere for both of them.
I don't think so. Scarlett has implied in an interview with Howard Stern that she didn't really connect with Bill Murray off script. Just good acting is all 👍
So tell me this is who you are

I'm in the same situation that Charlotte has(minus the husband) and I met a guy from NY who had a business trip in HK. We were just sitting in his hotel room with great harbour view, talking about relationships and life. He has a successful life like
Bob and also an incomplete marriage. It feels so weird to experience the exact moment like in the movie. And I do miss him
+cx michelle It's hard to find real soulmates. You can always find love, sex, fun in an relationship but really good conversations with somebody who really really "understands", that's very rare. There are people you're talking for 15' and even if it's interesting you feel tired afterwards. And with some you can talk for hours and you hope it never ends and it's like food for the soul. I have experienced it with only one woman, later we were a couple. The relationship unfortunately doesn't exist anymore but i miss her very much, no other can compete her. I don't even miss her so much as a woman, i miss her as a person and the special bound we had.
Never had a relationship. Bit like Charlotte but with no partner. I feel for Bob as he is strained by his marriage and how the atmosphere in social indirectly rules shrugs at it as people pass, even got that problem too which in a simple and clean way just wants connection. We are scard too talk to others becouse it's the reaction that will come with it, as you think but pretend that your ok with things. Mistakes or not, at least having connection was what I was doing. Mistakes I can say is that the reaction of the mistake people say I did or say. I can address myself and think on it, but others it tightly holds it and makes connection the opposite. There are people in my life I have around on facebook, instagram. My actual life? My friend I go see but not the pandemic since. Parasocial relations as anyone. People I think of, I do but dont know what they think, less or more. In my room with the ps2 playing crash Twinsanity, its nice and something to relax too, wish it was with someone I care about. I think when my mind gose round, to make things better I channel things and I ended up here to ease a connection circomstance that something subtle and nice can make sense even though it hurts or confused but your on that ship that eases enough to say it's going to be ok. I wish someone that cares about me as I care about them would reach out, to see that person, I know that's not real but hope for something. Hope for anything to get me by. I mean hollow Bastion castle from kingdom hearts were built by love with eventual trial and errors, its perfection and imperfection growing. I just wish for a childs eyes that love was the expectation it really was or can be. I mean simple and clean, what's wrong with that?
Hopefully you will meet another wonderful man you can build a life with...given 8 years have passed, maybe you have already
"...But then they learn how to walk, and they learn how to talk, and then, you want to be with them, and then they turn out to be the most delightful people you will ever meet in your life."
I love that. How true. You're scared at first, but then, you find that out all by yourself.
A young lost soul looking for reassurance in an older soul
I was about 16 when I saw this movie, had me in tears... In my 30s & still hold a special place for Scarlett & Bill for this movie.
Saw this movie when I was 19 & loved everything about. Watched it every single night. The best movie ever, it's innocence &real life wrapped into one. Story of my life: )
I love this movie so much. It's very real and relatable. It's movies like this that remind me that we all have basic fears and that that's ok.
I remember hearing that Bill Murray said that was the best scene he's ever been in...
Bill Murray is such an incredible actor.
“We used to have a lot of fun...it gets a whole lot more complicated when you have kids. Your life...as you know it... is gone...never to return.” 20 years of marriage, and I can tell you this is true. Everything becomes more important than the two of you. Before you know it, your just life partners. The romance, excitement and happiness is gone... replaced by responsibility and fatigue. It’s inevitable...😞
I'm sorry about that, I hope your partner can understand that and maybe feeling the same way could see you care.
0:20 I love scene like this. What he said is basically the key to life. She brushes it off. That’s life right there a serious of passing moments in which you don’t really know what’s important.
I always wonder if it is loneliness that binds these two to one another.
Or is it a genuine human connection?
Do you think it even matters?
Just turned 30 last August and all of my frustrations and insecurities and confusion seem to have come to a head. I literally don’t know what to do with myself let alone my life. I don’t have a wife or kids, life feels simultaneously free and constricting at the same time. I happened to come across this movie on a plane ride and it couldn’t have been more timely.
That moment I realized they fight in the jungle book....
'The more you know who you are and what you want, the less you let things upset you'.
Personally, that's the most comforting wisdom about life and getting old, so I'm trying to live by it, and also give the same advice to others. Know thyself, this the key to happiness.
Fatima Yamaha - What's A Girl To Do
goddamn you saved me
Ooo, I know that song from hearing Dixon play it at Time Warp. Definitely did not realize this was even in it!
does it get easier?
@callum jess Yes! :-)
I just watched this movie the other night it blew my mind... not only is the film exceptionally made, but every scene is real life if that makes sense the beauty the pain the struggle the amazement, the joy, the terrible things all in one stew...
EDEN - rock and roll
Sorry, but its rock+roll
It annoys me when people say rock and roll...
Apology accepted
Lund - Chemistry
Life (with her) - Vctre
I think this was beautifully used in EDEN’s song. When I listen to the “I’m not worried about you” the words sound dim, but it’s presented lightly. It’s probably just me but I register it as something similar to ‘Your well being doesn’t worry me’. Idk, I always heard those words when I was younger. Everything I was, was mine alone, my burdens, my heart, my whole being. I was left alone to become a functioning human by myself. Bc of that I always wanted someone to share it all with, these feelings for me complement Rock + Roll so well. I love how our own unique experiences can easily add another layer to something like this.
We need more films like this.
This scene hits me like a train everytime.
one of my favorite scenes from the movie....aw darn it, they cut this clip short...when he puts his hand on her foot after she says "John thinks I'm so snotty", Bill says "you're not always"...then they fall asleep. beautiful
been listening to eden for ages but im today years old when i found out it was from a film
Beautiful scene from a great movie. Just wonderful.
2:42 so so so true! Enjoy being with your children and love them!!
Was watching that scene 20 years ago through Charlotte's eye, watching again 20 years, mariage and kids later. That is, through Bob's eye now. Every words he says rings true to me. Still love that movie, and that scene in particular.
No matter what age/stage you are in life, the Big Questions remain unanswered. The brilliance of this movie is that this point is driven home, but with humor & humanity. A modern classic.
Beautiful scene from a beautiful film. Two characters sharing simple but intimate truths.
I’m gonna quote what he says about parenting. I love this scene, and the film around it ❤️
This scene changed my life.
Thanks Bill and Scarlett.
I love this film so much and I always find myself coming back to it whenever I feel like I'm at a fork in the road. I really try to take to heart what Bob says about how, "the more you know who you are and what you want, the less you let things upset you."
I'm two years away from turning 30 and while I do feel like I'm in a good place at the moment, I still find myself worrying that I don't really know who I am or what I want out of life. I definitely relate a lot to Scarlett's character when she says, "I just don't know what I'm supposed to be".
This scene means different things every few years you watch it
I bet Murray was channeling personal experience when talking about marriage here. "That's hard." Indeed.
0:22 my all time favourite quote
Filmed on location: put on good headphones and turn the volume up real loud. You'll hear night Tokyo in the backdrop and it's perfect for the scene.
Their voice is so calming..
The next clip of her exploring Kyoto: Seeing the world differently after experiencing his perspective. What is happening during this sequence? It's not quite enlightenment, but... it's brushing against it.
Love this movie and this scene and the quote the more you know who you are and what you want the less you let things up set you
Must be 10 years ago i watched this movie.. i seen it a few times since, but this scene has always stuck in my memory, and its what brought me here today
i love this movie and especially this scene because i feel like its taking me away, taking me away to japan. like im on vacation.

Mitchell Murray who cares about oscars. It makes me almost like a film more. It means they didn’t set out to win an Oscar, they set out to make a good movie.

EDEN ;))
I can't believe I know every word in this scene, but this is my first time watching it! Thx Eden.
"Your life as you know it is gone, never to return." Those words were a stab in the heart when I watched this scene as a new mom, just a few months into parenthood. I was in denial for a while that my old life was gone once my child came into the picture. But it was. And I loved that old life. And I still mourn it. But the cold hard truth of this scene was also what I needed to hear at that time. And I realized that this feeling could be turned into art and that made me feel better.
This is my all time favorite movie.
great scene, great film, great actors.
I adore how this comment section is flooded with EDEN lyrics
